DayZ Standalone is a game that's very divisive among the gaming community. After 5 years in early access, the game had a full in 2019 to a mixed reception. Many people thought it wasn't worth the purchase at the time, but what about in 2021? That's what I'm out to discover.
At the time of recording, I had DayZ for about two weeks and had put 29.5 hours into it. So I'm in no way a DayZ expert.

I have over 5000 hours in DayZSA and I came here to say that I stumbled into this, and it's the very best review of DayZ and frankly, of any game I've ever seen reviewed. So thorough, and you covered everything someone should know, even the smallest details and all the most important aspects. You really nailed this dude. Good job.

I actually get this comment a lot. Whether or not to buy DayZ doesn't have a one-size-fits-all answer if you can't tell from the steam reviews, so I tried giving as much info as I could about the game so that you could make a decision on your own. I don't know what type of games every specific person likes so it's up to them to see if what this video showcase is right for them. If you want a clear yes or no then sure go for it. If you hate it refund it to steam within 2 hours.
@@Popmandoop Well if you get it a lot, why make the video in the first place asking a question, KNOWING you won't answer it. The reason people watched it is to hear your opinion, otherwise they'd just watch vids/read up and make a decision which is what you're saying they should do anyway, so yeah it was a waste of ~12 mins. That's a big cop out, regardless of the good content otherwise, and this goes for all content creators
@@Exile4L Yah I feel like the issue with this video was just lack of experience. It was only my fourth video and I had a long way to go with script writing since I was really new to it. I did give my opinion on the game though. I said that I think it's a good game, but overall isn't worth it unless it's on sale or at a lower price. Do you think I should've made that point clearer? Genuinely curious since I'm always looking to improve!

He gave a rundown of pretty much whats goin on with the game and if that didnt peak your interest in it enough to buy it then, well, you answered the question. He is helping you answer the question yourself, unless of course you need someone to tell you exactly what to buy or not buy.
I've seen people buy this game and instantly regret it and hate the game because they're conditioned to being pampered by triple A titles like Call of Duty that holds your hand through everything. Dayz is harsh, unfair, difficult and unforgiving. The best way I can describe Dayz is when you first listen to an album and it sounds like crap, then the more you listen the better it gets. Thats how Dayz is, the more you play the better it gets until it becomes a full addiction and you can't get enough. Next thing you know its 4am and you've been playing for 16 hours straight, haven't eaten and your girlfriend is ready to leave you because you ignore her since you're playing dayz all day.

If you're new you should really be trying to play on servers with just a few Mods. The more mods you find on a server the less interaction (other than safe zones) you're going to find. People will be sitting in their base more often than not. Cars are part of the base game so you don't need mods for them unless a server has added more cars. I started on a very heavily modded server and it really skewed my perspective of the game to the point that I stopped playing. Once I found a group of servers that were more focused on improving quality of life instead of adding MoRe GuNs AnD aRmOrS I actually had a lot of fun. Servers with markers, traders and safe zones really kill the DayZ vibe unless you're looking for a Call of DayZ game. If that's what you're looking for, there are a lot of games that do it better because that's not really what DayZ was intended for.
Remember; dying is part of the game. You WILL die. You WILL die a LOT until you figure things out, but that's part of the fun. Just look at each death as a new adventure. Don't be scared to lose your gear. There is a LOT more gear out there.
Also, Talk. Talk to everyone you meet. Even if 9 out of 10 don't talk back (which honestly it'll be more like 2 out of 10) you will have a very bad time with the game if you try to be the solo lonewolf all the time (especially in the beginning). DayZ is all about the interactions. You could either spend those 2 hours running through the woods quietly alone, or with a couple of random guys you just met in town. Which sounds more fun?

I added MoreGuns to my server and completely removed cars. They’re beyond buggy with desync. Beyond that i added MVS for military flavor and that’s about it. I’m with you, too many mods make it a boring server where everyone sits in a base.
My trader is mostly a sell location, you can’t buy 90% of what players would expect to buy. They have to actually PLAY DAYZ to find items of value and use, building tools, etc.

One great thing about this game for me is the social interaction, even as someone with social anxiety, it brings me to talk to people because it’s crucial to in this game.
My tip for DayZ newbies: Play with a friend. It's MUCH easier to get a pleasant starting experience, when you don't face the harshness of the zombie apocalypse all on your own. Also it's less boring to roam endless woods or loot isolated villages, when you have somebody to talk to. Playing with a friend can make playing DayZ worthwhile, even when you do nothing but chop wood and further process it to then build something with for hours and hours. Back in the days of ARMA II DayZ, I have spent whole weekends (and on some occasions even whole weeks) this way, bunkered up with my buddy at his place, only leaving the game for short snack or toilet breaks or to sleep. And I don't regret it. DayZ can be frustrating and depressing, especially when playing alone as a newbie, but it can be the most exiting, entertaining and exeptional experience you will ever have playing a computer game as well.

This game has been around way to long to not be optimized at this point. I Can't even bring myself to pay the discount price of $29.99. I was very hopeful that they would turn it around, but it feels like the devs are being lazy or just don't care about their fan base.

I love how the movement is in this game. In other games when you turn your character just rotates in place oddly, but you can see at 5:50 the guy standing in the door turns his body at his hips and neck like you normally would do. Nice realistic detail imo

I've had some unforgettable stories on DayZ (specifically the console version) it's definitely one of my favorites.
This one time I was stalking this armed group and they were in the process of recruiting some guy. They were talking in front of the shed I was hiding in and so I decided to take the shot. I shot the first dude in the head with a pistol close range and ran out from the shed and dodged a few bullets, then I turned around and shot another guy 4 times in the chest. So far I had two out of four people dead, the recruit and another armed guy. I zig zag pushed the guy with the gun because I was out of bullets, so I pulled my sledgehammer out. Turns out the gunshots attracted a horde of zombies, so at that point I had serious blood loss because I had been hit several times by the zombies. I ran out and juked the zombies so I could retreat back into the shed and close the doors. When I ran in to close the doors a zombie had ran through and I fucking shit myself because I didn't want to die because of a zombie. He scraped me but I killed it with my sledgehammer. One of the dudes' bodies was clipping thru the door so I looted him, but then the fucken recruit ran through naked and punched me to death. Keep in mind I was extremely low but I was sooo pissed.
I started Dayz since the Arma 2 mod, and bought the game when I was in college. I like to play the lone wolf bandit villian which fits quite well with the game mood. Stalking other players for hours, and following them to their secret stash or base, discovering their intentions is your thing... then this is the game. After 5 years of hiatus (and from your video still not much improvement besides the mods), yea.... I think I'll jump right back in. Lol

I have paid a total of £22 on dayz and that includes Livonia DLC, the game is only as good as the player that is using it, owned it for 7 years but only really started playing it in the last 6 months, since release the game has changed so much its had a complete engine rebuild/replacement as for player inter actions get off the coast as soon as possible and head for the hot spots, Dayzexpansion mod is awesome, as are the maps made by the modding comunity, Namalslk, deer isle, Esseker, chernarusplus, rostow and valning to name a few, Dayz is not CoD so dont expect it to be.
A man whole dayz got like 2 years there is alot of interaction you just need to know your server hot spot and if you play game you will know all the glitches if you have friend you would laugh for hours

You do a good job. Keep it up. You come across genuine and easy to listen to. I'm new to this game and you explained it really well without bias. I can pick this game up for £25 (GBP) about $35. With lockdown kicking my ass, I'm going to go for it. Though I'm not going to be playing every day... Or maybe even every week for hours on end. I'm no pro at games, probably below average, so I think it'll be short lived. Especially if I do well and then meet someone for the first time whp has loads of exp, they'll kill me instantly and I can see that getting frustrating. Thanks for the info, it's helped.

Should I play on vanilla servers or modded?
Vanilla:
Vanilla servers have more player interaction and it is harder to survive but more rewarding. You will die a lot more and will not get nearly as much combat. Finding your friends is way harder in vanilla.
Modded:
Most of the modded servers are only KOS and PvP. If you are more in to that, go ahead and play modded servers. Modded servers also have more clothing, guns and more stuff in general and many of them have more players. Surviving is pretty easy since you have proper clothes, food and water when spawning and you can just run to the closest military area and get guns and then head to a trader and get rest of your stuff. Modded is not easy when compared to other games but is way easier than vanilla.

You don't need the 3rd party launcher anymore to play on modded servers.
In a nutshell when you play this game you need to create your own experience. Your decisions when encountering other players can be deadly or a great adventure might develop.
Rule #1: Don't trust anyone
Rule #2: Everyone is friendly until they find a weapon
Rule #3: Never put your guards down, be always aware of your surrounding
Those 3 are great rules for real life too lol

I think DayZ is one of the best survival games out there. And I think Livonia is a pretty fun map so i don't mind the 15 euros, because of the modding community there are a lot of modded maps that are free like Deer Isle, Rostow and Namalsk if people don't want to pay money
Its so shit, legit spent 20 mins looking at shitty graphics, then the game somehow made FUCKING PUTTING A PAIR OF PANTS ON IMPOSSIBLE then my idiot character used it as a weapon, then after spending 20 running around not finding a SINGLE GUN OR AXE i ran from a zombie and then i had some weird shit where my screen went black when i stood up, idk how to reset or something so i spent a while trying to die to hopefully fix that issue, then the server shut dow. Good lord

I agree you should wait for a sale. As it stands, I wouldn't pay more than $20 for this game in 2021, and I have something like 1,600 hours in it.

I've been playing DayZ since it released back in 2012 I have 8000k hours It's amazing in my opinion I've been playing xbox one to avoid hackers, mods.

Been playing on and off since the mod. I loved it in the beginning, but hackers made me lose interest. Fast forward a few years, still hackers more content very buggy. Fast forward 3 more years to present, i fell in love all over again. This game is always getting better.
A lot of people say that the devs are being lazy and before that might have been true but now the game has only 8 people working on it and I believe that includes social media moderators so for 8 people working on it it’s pretty decent and they come outs with updates on a decent time frame with good size updates every 2 or 3 months
True, it has been a lot better recently as far as I've been told. I think everyone's main issues were closer to launch, but i'm not a 100% on that since I wasn't there.

Vanilla dayz is fine, the only thing mods really add are a better base building format, most of the guns are just reskins and the only mod that really adds vehicles that are worth is the DayZ Expansion mod
I totally agree now that I've played it more, normal dayz is totally fun and enjoyable. It is just made easy for new players with mods like traders, choosing spawns, and waypoints.
Is it worth for solo experience? And price is kinda high to buy now.
btw only like 5-10 people is working on the whole game so don't expect many updates.

Rust is definitely a much better communal experience. You can find people everywhere you look, whereas dayz is very lonely 90% of the time, but Rust requires more dedication since you can be killed even while offline. In DayZ you can't after a few seconds.

I like Your review but I disagree with the "mods and vanilla" part
You see, I spend over 4000 hours in this game and I learned the mechanics by experience. I was waiting for stamina depletion for a long time, cause from realism perspective running with a 100 kg backpack should be different than running naked, and on most modded servers it is NOT!
I am a big fan of this game, best experience I ever played even though I cannot forgive devs for not programming Improvised Bow back into the game.
I met a lot of people, two of them I invited to my house.
I killed even more and I still remember my first kill from Aprill 2014 !
I like harsh game, first person only, easy to kill and easy to be killed, no infinite stamina and for gods sake no currency in post apocaliptic scenarios !

Congrats on the 5000 hours playtime! I totally agree with what you said about the harshness of the game. When I made this review I hadn't had the game long, but as I continued to play the modded server were for sure not as appealing. I'll have to make an updated video next year!
Dayz is something you can play on arma 3, if you have Arma 3(or 2 I guess) is it still worth getting the standalone, or would it be a better experience on arma 3?

Oh yah, I've certainly played my fair share of rust as well. DayZ is a bit weird because its a lot more quiet than rust.
If you play on consule they just did a new update were they deleted a lot of lobbies to make the game more pvp, so they deleted tons of lobbies

Hmmm depends. If you're unsure I would just go with the base game since you can always add dlc later, but with that being said the Livonia map is actually really fun, and better than Chernarus imo.

• Spawn killing. (Same as freshie killer)
• dupers ( People dupe a lot)
• Campers ( There is no rules against camping ) 'Make sure you scout the area first
• On old console FPS drop when ever you us KA or M4 [ KA=AK ] ( if you have new gen consoles you don't have any trouble )
• Only good server you will have good gameplay

You could probably set up a solo server or just play on low pop / PVE only servers if you want to avoid PVP.
Dayz is one of my favourite games. Still the best survival game.

DayZ doesn’t hold your hand. So many people crying about this game just like they do with FromSoftware games. Either persist and learn the game, or go play something that’ll baby you.
Mods are by no means a must have in DayZ. I play official 99.9% of the time and its where the game
shines the most, minus the cheaters ofc. Mods should be used very lightly but when you have mods for unlimited stamina and in game maps with markers and bunch of gay clothes, that’s not DayZ anymore.

It can be fun. But realistically the developers do less than get out of bed every day. The haven't fixed the stability of this game since they released the alpha.

I kind of want day z but I already have rust and don’t want a game that’s too similar so are they different enough to the point where it’s worth the purchase
I think they are pretty different from eachother. Dayz is much more focused on survival than multi-player and base building like rust. My only issue is that I personally think that its overpriced for what it is. I think I would wait for a sale if you want to pick up DayZ, especially if you're unsure.

I like to play vanilla, i spent like 10k hours in dayz mod and 2k hours in dayz sa, playing vanilla ;p
Yah, Vanilla is definitely is also a super fun experience, especially since I've played DayZ more. Just keep in mind this video was supposed to be from a "newcomer" perspective, and I think mods make the game a lot more palatable up front. Once they're hooked they can realize and appreciate how difficult vanilla is.

I'm 50/50 about this game. But honestly.. It's boring. I like playing it by myself. Fighting zombies, searching buildings, and fighting off wildlife is okay. But, again, the game is boring. I get to a military camp and a few zombies beat me up, cause me to loose a lot of blood so my toon passes out and I stayed on top of a pile of sand boxes while I was passed out. Next thing, someone revives me just to shoot me, revives me again and shoots me again... And aside from them being the "Hey, I'm a loser that only plays this game so I'm so bored I only troll other players now with duped items.." I can't totally blame them because overall.. This game is boring.
Ok so as a player with 1000+ hours on pc and another 1000+ on my ps4 this game is really fun when you first start. When I play the game now I play servers with almost no mods the way this game works folks are the endless things that can happen but I will tell you that at first this game is so fun and you can get with a group and just wreck servers but the thing as a guy who has almost mastered the PVP and I am not trying to gloat and say I am just that good like no I mean it the hours I spent practicing and just grinding the fuck out the game I mean I have a 1000 meter shot out of the side of a fucking helicopter while the guy was running full sprint..... yeah I was a fucking no life at this game and I admit that full-heartedly I have wiped full squads of 8 guys by myself I've been labeled a hacker in a number of servers to many to count and yet I still played the game why I am I saying all of this shit well I will tell you why even after all the shit I have done in this game there is still new things that happen in this game to this day after playing for 3 years i still find myself getting after a few months and just enjoying the survival of this game i take a break from this game and come back ever so often and just fall in love with the game all over again i have met players in this game that i have known for 3 years now and i am great friends with them know this game is full of endless outcomes and the devs may miss treat the game but the modding community still supports it more than ever before......
That's DayZ for yah. You either hate it with all your heart, or love it with all your heart haha.

Who on earth would want to play this game on consoles...
A lot of people surprisingly. Apparently it really helps weed out the hackers that usually populate the official servers. Still gonna stay pc though haha
@@Popmandoop I do believe that consoles have less hackers, but I have heard plenty of complaint even on that end. I still wouldn't play any shooter game on consoles. These days consoles should be dead already, slowing down the progress for the rest of us.
