  • Crazy story told by Art Rupp about seeing lightning generated by the beta activity of radioactive Strontium-90 in a hot cell. This was from the Fission Product Pilot Plant at ORNL.
From oral history collected by Oak Ridge Public Library: cdm16107.contentdm.oclc.org/d...

    good lawd.
Iz 2 spicy even for this radiophile.
And keep in mind that would barely be about 10 NANOgrams worth!

I wonder how fast you'd get a lethal dose, from that intensity of beta radiation?

well it would be emitting over 2 quadrillion beta particles per second, and at a dose rate of 755 mrem/hr per mCi at 30cm away, a 60KCi source would be blasting you with 45 million REM/hr at the same distance. So a fatal 500 REM dose in less than one twentieth of a second, but only to the top 1cm of your skin!
