I watched a doc. About English nat. Ballet rehearsal for swan lake with choreographer screaming and yelling, it was awful to witness how he humiliated dancer. This fellow is so decent and gets everything from dancer and no screaming! Brilliant!
Out of this world! Fabulous and utterly fantastic what these dancers are giving to us, the public. The lifetime dedication of each individual comes together, concentrated in this one fabulous ballet. It's unreal how good these dancers are. I'm totally beguiled.

How did I miss this?! I have felt since I was a little kid that Pictures would make a great ballet. Would have loved the full orchestra (Ravel version), but this is great. Hope it comes back to the NYCB stage soon.

Modern choreography is so messy looking, I'm not a fan.
Is it just me or did this choreography not look good or interesting at all?
Costumes can make or break a ballet. These costumes break this ballet. NYCB dancers not the best. Training too insular and Balanchine out of date. No wonder Ratmansky, with his impeccable Russian training, awes them.
Then why are ballet companies all over the world trying desperately to manage Balanchine ballets? Even when many don't manage well...
It often seems to me its usually fan boys/girls of companies that struggle with Balanchine's choreography that feel the need to declare how horrible his work and company are...

and NO Balanchine done unrecognizably is NOT good.
Jayjen35 -- I am not sure why the Russians are staging Balanchine so often. Maybe because Balanchine was one of them. His training was at the Vaganova Academy, still the best ballet academy in the world, and he started his career at the Mariinsky. Maybe because his choreography had been off limits to them during its heyday.
The Russians dance Balanchine beautifully -- the best I've ever seen actually. They are the best dancers in the world and their training and technique so incredible that they can adapt to any style and tempo of ballet without difficulty. Those who can dance Pierre Lacotte's petit allegro well -- and the Russians are the best I've seen -- can handle Balanchine in a breeze.
If Balanchine had been alive when the USSR collapsed and Russian ballet opened up to the West, I am sure Balanchine would have loved to have choreographed pieces on members of his own alma mater, with the types of bodies that he sought out throughout his career.
Balanchine was known for blending the music and dance into one. That, of course, is still the main attraction of his ballets (Square Dance being a great example); however, I think his ballets are dated and some of his choreography quite boring by today's standards. You don't have to agree with me, of course.
JNK Perhaps you have seen performances that neither I nor most others (other than great Mariinski fans of course) have seen. Those that I've seen were horribly danced. Steps were simplified, or simply dropped all together, the tempo used were hoplessly slow or had a tendency to "wander", which is no wonder as some of their leading dancers refused to even learn the parts the correct way to begin with. The phrase was I believe, "We are not doing Balanchine's Balanchine, we are doing the Mariinski's Balanchine."

It is understandable that you and others appriciate the "re-tooling" of Balanchine's work as you have no appreciation of it to begin with, but those of us, and yes there are quite a few, that love and have great respect for his work and his company want to see the work done with due respect and at least a modicum of professionalism.
But as you say, not everyone will see things in this way.
Jayjen35 -- That is not even worthy of a response.
And I will say that it takes and has always taken more than a body to dance Balanchine's ballets. And I doubt very seriously that he would have taken Russian dancers "as/is" since how he taught his dancers, the technique and asthetic that he wanted he likely would have taught them as he did pretty much every other group of dancers he worked with.
And Balanchine never let a beautiful dancer go because their bodily ratio was off by a few inches. In fact he often hired dancers specifically to partner people who weren't "perfect".
I don’t understand why the dancers say ratmansky moves brilliantly. Am I missing something? I see nothing special in it. He looks like any other guy.
