Why I bought a 2018 Dodge Durango (2018 Durango Review)

- The Dodge Durango is a unicorn in America. It's the only mainstream three-row crossover that can tow more than 5,000 pounds. In fact, if you want to tow with a three row vehicle, the Dodge tows more than most three-row body-on-frame SUVs in America. Thanks to a 5.7L V8, rear wheel drive and wide tires the Durango is also a surprising amount of fun to drive. Is it the best three-row vehicle in America? No, but it was the right vehicle for me.

this guy is at the top of my reviewer list - very complete and concise along with honest opinions on a particular competitors - a really welcome trait
he doesnt copy what other reviwers say. He say what he feels and not what wants to be heard
MrZzyzxx you said it man! I do like this fella too, always on point and thorough.
most informative and organized
Pro tip - equalize the volume on your intro jingle and the rest of the video. The intro is regularly significantly louder than the rest of your content.
I say this in love.
Listen to this man. He speaks the truth.
True, I adjusted my volume during the intro and then I couldn't even hear him at all when he started talking.
I'm clearly an elderly woman.
What’s odd is the intro is very quiet in the video we sent to YT but once uploaded they fiddle with the volume
Just keep it the same volume as video that you initially did, was actually disappointed that you quited it down for the naysayers.
Congratulations on the new Durango Alex. Bought one a few months back based on your review, and couldn't be happier. Glad to see you've chosen the 8cyl as well. Nothing else like this in the market.
I bought a new Durango and really enjoy it. I’ve never had to take it to dealer. Just change oil, rotate tires and gas it up.
High marks for FCA quality. The Durango handles more like a spots sedan. I’ve owned 14 Ford SUV and now I prefer Dodge.
Great styling , large cargo capacity and rear wheel drive. Good review.
I love the Durango’s too, and they are very reliable. I FCA quality still isn’t the best and I would stay away from certain FCA products.
Had mine for about 6 months now and love it. No issues as of yet. Im planning on getting a few things done though like window tint, cold air intake and adding the performance hood.
Thanks for sharing this with us Alex, cant wait until you get your stinger.
D Tay oh yeah. He said he was gonna probably get that
This guy’s life and philosophy on cars is absolute goals.
My durango RT is about a month old and I love it! I was always driving Ford Explorers for the last 18 years and this SUV has definitely impressed me! Plus I love the hood scoop!
Great review. I purchased a 2019 GT a couple of weeks ago and thus far I'm very happy with it. I'm cheap so I didn't get the RT version which I initially second guessed. However, the V6 is surprisingly peppy. Otherwise it's been the perfect vehicle. I have a wife, a son and two large dogs (one of them is a huge Newfoundland) and needed an SUV that could comfortably accommodate everyone for a somewhat lengthy drive up to the lake on summer weekends. My previous vehicle was a Jeep Grand Cherokee and while it was an excellent SUV, it just wasn't quite big enough for a long drive with all five of us packed in.
Aside from roominess, very impressed with the handling and performance of the vehicle. The rear wheel drive definitely contributes to the vehicle feeling more responsive and was in my opinion superior to the other vehicles I took out for a test drive (Traverse, Explorer). For anyone that wants an SUV on the larger side but doesn't want to pay the exorbitant price of a Tahoe, I'd recommend taking a long look at the Durango.
You've just given me more reasons to stay in love with my Durango. Thanks for the review.
This is my first time watching a review on your channel and I must say I am very impressed. You gave me all the information I needed about this vehicle, thanks Alex!
Just found your content a few days ago and You seem to be a well-spoken individual. You know what you talk about and you present the information as well as your opinion well. Thanks for putting together such succinct (at the same time in-depth) reviews, Alex. Cheers from Canada.
I had a 2009 Traverse, nice car but consistently in the shop traded for a 2013 Durango. I now have over 150000 miles on it with no issues and I love it!
Nice, Alex. Good choice. Congrats.
Alex great choice, beautiful vehicle. I have a 2013 and have been very happy with mine. Congrats, and thank you for all your great content.
I have a 2015 sxt awd and love it. Nothing compares.
Alex, I subscribed to your channel because of this. I have a 2016 Citadel v6 myself and I can’t stop smiling every time I drive it. 40k miles and I’ve only needed to do 3 oil changes. This truck is solid and the most badass looking/sounding/driving of all the SUV.
Utility at its finest. Buy what you need is exactly what I wanted to hear. Great review once again and congratulations to your new Durango.
I just bought mine yesterday. It is absolutely fantastic in and out. Perfect for our family of five.
Well so far so good. It's been almost 2 months with no issues. It is hands down the most enjoyable SUV to drive that we have owned. The drivetrain and handling is wonderful even with the base V6 that we opted for. Hopefully the long term reliability is there too. It will be hard to be much worse than the 2014 Pathfinder that preceded it. Something broke on that car every other week.
I have a 2016 Citadel v6. Loooovvveee this car. I have a grin every time I drive it. 40k miles and I’ve only needed oil change. My car sends me email on how it’s doing. It gets boring because it just tells me that everything is ok. Except for that one time the tire pressure got a little low. I want the SRT but it only comes in 6 passenger. I need 7 seats for my family of 7.
Amazing Review. The best I have seen. It definitely helped as I'm considering to purchase the RT trim. Thank you!
Congrats!
Now let’s see a long long long term review of the 9-7x Aero!
Alex, I've watched all your Durango reviews and it's no surprise you bought it. Your enthusiasm during the driving experience was obvious. In this age of watered down, fwd based, turbocharged lifted crossovers, the Durango is a breath of fresh air.
Based on the Mercedes GL with an x frame, the Durango is a solid feeling and driving vehicle with the option for a traditional V8 and RWD. Sure, the other watered down fwd crossovers sell better (explorer, Highlander, etc), but the Durango has a feel and ride that none of those other appliances can touch or replicate.
Great choice! This is the most underrated vehicle that FCA makes BY FAR. If it had a Jeep badge, it's sale would increase 3x.
Manpreet Singh which is probably why they’re debuting the new Jeep Wagoneer 🤑
The Grand Cherokee?
I don't think the Durango is based on the Mercedes GL. It, and most all Chrsyler/Dodge offerings (minus the new Pacifica Minivan and Ram trucks) are based on an old Mercedes E-Class platform from 2 or 3 generations ago (circa early 2000s).
alliejr mobile.nytimes.com/2011/09/04/automobiles/dodge-durango-benefits-of-a-benz-beneath-the-skin.html
alliejr clearly states Mercedes GL in the article. It's not just a jacked up charger/e class. The grand Cherokee is based on the shorter ML.
I owned a 2000 Dodge Durango for 15 years, it was a wonderful vehicle and I miss it to this day. We had the transmission rebuilt at 130k miles. Other than that and the standard replacement of break pads, rotors and 1 hub replacement, it never gave us any major issues. The 4.7l motor ran like a champ the entire time we owned it. It was an amazing vehicle for my family.
I have a 15' Durango RT with the 5.7 and have about 37K miles on it. So far... so good. I bought it to tow my boat and I didn't want to buy a giant SUV. So exactly as Alex says. The towing is excellent and it really is a good value when you compare it to the competition. Cheers - from Miami.
I’m happy for you Alex. I’ve always felt the Durango to be an underdog (with Mercedes DNA) and so you pointed out intelligent reasons why this model is right for you. We had a previous generation Durango for 10 years and although it was a different architecture, it served us well. We replaced it with a 2013 8 Spd. 5.7L Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 which for us once again has been great with just regular maintenance, great UConnect system, AWD transfer case and cylinder deactivation that recently help us achieve a round trip mpg from our city (Edmonton) through the Rocky Mountains with 2 kayaks in the box and luggage/gear in 2nd that was 26.5 (10.7 L/100 km).
Congrats on this sweet new ride Alex! It's badass . Also I loved the video as usual, very informative and to the point.
Congratulations on building your own home! Enjoyed the video. ~ from Texas
Congrats on the new ride! Very nice!
Always admired the Durango. Very good vehicle review.
Congratulations man!!! 🎉🎈🎆🎉🎉🎉🎈🎈
Alex is now part of the Brotherhood of Muscle!!
Great review Alex. You definitely nailed what you needed. I own a '16 Highlander by the way, but you did a great job selling this!
I purchased the same exact model for my wife and we don’t tow. I just liked the looks, the presence on the road and how smooth it actually drives. Drove the vehicle from NJ to IL and it did well on gas, especially at speeds of 90 mph. 2 years owning it and not one issue.
So far I love my Citadel,
thanks Alex!
Great review - as always. Please keep us updated on your (hopefully long term) experience. Cheers!
Well said and well done... Just got mine last week, and love it. The space is awesome!! I had to get more space for my 3 babies. And everyone is happy even the wife. Lol thanks for you help
Congratulations to you and yours, Alex! Thanks for sharing, wishing you many happy, safe, and trouble-free adventures. But about that Stinger ...
I used to have a 2014 Durango and I really miss it! Good choice
Congrats on almost getting 200k subs!
It's nice to see a car reviewer being objective on what he says. You take all things into consideration in your reviews, it may work for some it may not work for others instead of trying to make like everyone has to agree with your opinions.
And you brought that idea to your own personal choice, even the Durango being an aging offering it doesn't mean it's that bad at all.
(Alex, upload more to The Mountain Garden pls)

Contrast this glowing review of the 2018 Durango with the hammering he gave the recent Sequoia "dinosaur", primarily because the Sequoia has gone much too long without a complete redesign. We love our 2014 Sequoia, in large part because it tows really well even though the infotainment system doesn't whip out a decent espresso. czcams.com/video/HshirImZxi0/video.html
Thumbs up! Great review as always. Might be my next rig. Had one in 2011 and loved it.
I love my Citadel. Great choice. Love your reviews. Keep 'em coming!
Excellent review as always. Congrats and enjoy your new Durango.
Excellent and interesting as usual, Alex. I think your review highlights a couple of points. First, there is no such thing as the "best" vehicle in any particular category. Individual needs and priorities make all the difference. Second, choosing a vehicle almost always means prioritizing specific features and being willing to accept some less desirable aspects of that choice. Kudos for your objectivity in analyzing yours.
With all the reviews you do, I never expected you to buy an FCA vehicle. Good luck on reliability.
great review! always love your reviews
Alex ordered exactly the one he wanted...We always buy slightly used from CarMax....Good for you Alex!!
Congratulations Alex,..Me and my son rent a Durango last long labor Day week end thru the Canadian rockies...we fell in love with these suv….awesome performer suv...thanks for the review...
Alex the type of guy to give us some of the best automotive reviews on this side of the milky way
Congrats Alex, using trailers vs pickups is the way to go.Clearing off some land a friends utility trailer was a huge help.
Leaving NH heading for Arizona in a 2017 SXT V6 and our Cougar 21RBS RV Trailer. Waiting for us in SURPRISE! A 2018 Showroom R/T RWD In-Violet Exterior, Black Interior with Duel Exhaust V8 HEMI - Thanks for showing us what we’ll be getting for Christmas..
Congrats Alex!! With your excellent review, I did the same leaving my Nissan Pathfinder which was great to the R/T trimmed Durango! Love it and many thanks!!
Awesome review, you did a wonderful job
An excellent review with actual useful information!
I’m really impressed with the 3.6/ZF 8 speed combo. My last car search I test drove several and while the 3.6/8 speed isn’t the most tech savvy or torquey combination it seems always to deliver smooth power across the power band, with impressive stats. I regularly get 31 on the freeway with my 300 and the thing is over 4000lbs.
Best automobile reviewer on CZcams hands down
Outstanding review Alex
Good luck with the vehicle, hope you have many years of trouble free use. It seems to match your needs perfectly!
Hey Alex. Congratulations on the purchase. Don’t worry about the reliability. My Dodge van served me well until it was totaled at 180K miles due to a suicidal deer.
Congrats on building your own house. We did that too. Literally. We dug the foundation and septic ourselves (with a rented back hoe) and everything from there on up was done by me and my wife. Bricks, framing, electric, plumbing, roofing, paint, the whole works. Also a three car detached garage and a small barn and a couple outbuildings. We did it all with a gnarly old 1965 GMC 3/4 ton long bed step side pickup (yep, step side long bed). We always laugh when someone tells us they "built their own house," only to find out that they had everything done by contractors. Oh, but they worked hard picking out the paint colors!
Bought a 2020 Dodge Dakota GT AWD last weekend. The v6 is great! Also got the tow package. At 1230 miles, the fuel economy was 25mpg on I-5. From Lancaster to San Francisco. In a couple of days I will go down Skyline drive to Hwy 9. Down through Felton to Santa Cruz. Will head down hwy 1to hwy 46. Back over to the I-5 and back to Lancaster.
So far the travel has been very comfortable. So much so, that I may drive it more than planed. I bought it to complement my wife's 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L Cummins. And my 2016 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd 3.0L Ecodiesel. The power is fine. I drove over hwy 152 Pacheco Pass with a very strong head wind. Speed Control was at 65mph, and the speed was 65mph all the way past Casa de Fruita.
Que buen review!! Alex es excelente haciendo esto.
can't wait to see the Wheels. .beautiful Durango
Congrats on the new vehicle!
Awesome review, nice ride! 👍
I’ve been in one of these Durangos. I loved it. The interior was pretty nice considering it was from 2011.
Boy that was a very in depth review......thank you.
Don Motz who thinks the chevorlet treverse is ugly and piece of sh**
Hey Dodge, Hire this guy to do reviews on all of your cars. He should have his own show. Great review dude!
Durango sales were way down in February so I am sure you got a great deal. That is the most important thing.
Love the video, I've been looking at a Durango or Explorer for my next family hauler. Thank you
Congrats Alex
Alex loves his 4 way lumbar!!!
Congrats on the Durango.
Although I'll never tow anything. But I DO need three rows so......
Wishing you many happy trips & worry free returns.
@T L
Ha! I had a Toyota Sienna which I loved. It served me faithfully 336k miles then we purchased a 2009 Lexus RX350. Not a bad vehicle by any means just need something bigger other than a van. Looking at a Lexus LX570 or Toyota Sequoia.
I own a 2017 Durango GT Blacktop edition. I absolutely love it. I have no complaints. I highly recommend test driving it before you buy another midsize SUV or crossover.
Alex, you should review the more practical V6 Durango for once! Always raving about the V8s :D
That's because most people that have owned trucks and used them know that the V8 is by far the better choice of engine. They can live a long life without breaking down because the labor for the engine is spread out over more cylinders and that is also nice for towing, you can get much better performance. The V6 has to work much harder to do the same job, so they might get better millage with an empty truck but once you start to pull a bunch of weight, that V6 is a dog and is going to have problems much sooner than the V8 will. I had a Chevy van with a 305 V8 that lasted me 23 years and 273000 miles without breaking down, not once was I on the side of the road for anything, not even a flat tire, although that was mostly luck, the V8 is made for trucks, the V6 turbo seems like a good idea and can be for some, but for a real working truck, the V8 is the way to go.
It was a great video. Really enjoyed it
Congratulations Alex. I hope that you like it as much as I like my 2012.
I just purchased two of the Durango and I love it
Congrats on the purchase! I bought a 2012 Citadel a few years back in a v6, 7 passenger configuration with every amenity minus the towing. I mainly chose the Durango for its looks, handling and family hauling capabilities. I also have a 13 Chrysler 300c with a HEMI that is my daily driver.
My wife and I cannot justify upgrading our Rango but when we do, it will be for an 8 cylinder with Captains in the middle instead of the bench that we currently have in ours. I enjoy this vehicle that much (I'm also on my 2nd 300). However, I do wish the 3rd row were mechanically foldable as well as the arm rest utilizing the same soft touch as the 2nd row does (they can borrow from the GLS/MLS wagon from Mercedes). Further, it would be great to have heated/cooled cup holders in the front (they can borrow from Chrysler as in my 300c). Finally, a pano sunroom (they can borrow from the Chrysler 300 & Jeep Grand). FCA could easily implement these amenities into their Durango.
The 3rd Gen Durango is a great crossover. It was engineered during the Chrysler/Mercedes era. The Grand Cherokee is a Mercedes ML wagon & the Durango is the GLS wagon. It offers comfort, style and versatility. I've used it several times now for massive grocery + department clothes shopping + Christmas tree on the room in addition to putting the 2nd & 3rd row down for transporting the purchase of a new hot water heater & building material for a new deck. Love my Durango.
Congrats, Alex!
Nice review, grats on the purchase.
Great job Alex!
Intro has some serious bass to it if you have headphones on... Reminds me somewhat of that THX audio intro they used to show in movies. Use to scare the crap outta me lol...
But congrats on the new ride, and excellent review as always Alex!
I think Alex is the best car reviewer on CZcams.
I cross shopped between a Highlander, Pilot, Durango and the Sorento, In the end. i went with the Sorento due to compact size, amazing refinement, and great dealer incentives. The highlander and Pilot was way more expensive (little dealer incentives as well) than the Sorento so they were out. It was between the Durango and the Sorento (both good incentives from the dealers). I love Durango so much but could not get it since it was so long that it would not fit in my single garage! In the end, it was your review of the Sorento that convinced me to get the Sorento.
Nice truck, loved the color. Had 2001 Durango Slt two tone Burgundy/Pearl for a long time 250k miles on it and strong as ever. Wish Dodge had kept the 4x4 instead of Awd. Really miss that V8, Rwd. Best truck ever. This one looks amazing!! Happy for you, enjoy it.
Thumbs up Alex; I rate your presentation as a solid "A". The only thing keeping it from an "A+" is an omission that's fairly important for many; off road capability. The availability of the tried and true Selec-Trac II 2-speed transfer case together with the Brake Limited Differential feature makes this quite a capable off roader. All the while maintaining everything you want in a street-going AWD system; open differentials for fuel economy and AWD automatically on-demand when conditions are bad. Get rid of the silly lower front air dam for better approach angle, taller all terrain tires, and maybe the Rocky Road lift kit, and you're going where many Jeeps go.
Also a convenient feature is the cap-less gas filling port. What a brilliant invention that was!
Congrats on your purchase. Funny though; your earlier Durango review is what steered me into getting a black 2018 Citadel optioned almost identically to yours. I bought mine last October and I'm VERY VERY pleased with it. Keep the sunny side up my friend.
One last comment. The R/T may very well rate a "B" in ride comfort, but the Citadel is an "A" imo.
It's still a nice vehicle. Love the V8 option. I think at least FCA could give it a pano sunroof and maybe sliding / flip/fold 2nd row seats to keep it contemporary. And the upcoming redesigned Explorer will join it as a RWD based crossover, interesting matchup
Congratulations, Alex, and thanks for sharing! Let us know when the new wheel/tire combo has been installed.
He nailed it, the Durango is the only 7 seater that can tow, gets good mpg unloaded, and doeant cost a fortune (depending on options. We tow our 31ft ultralight trailer with the v6 engine and never had any issue.
YAY ALEX REVIEWING OUR CAR
Gonna tell dad. gonna be funny seeing dads reactions in his criticisms
He can’t Handle them lol
I was very impressed with this Durango. I rented a Citadel and got about 26 MPG on a roadtrip from PA to Detroit and back, going about 70. Very quiet and even with those huge 20" wheels the ride was still very comfortable. The only things I didn't like were the cheap interior, poor visibility and the Alpine stereo was WAY too much bass.
I always thought a Crossover was meant to be kinda in between a car and an SUV whereas an SUV was meant to be between a crossover and a truck. I didn’t think crossovers were meant to share elements with trucks
Own a 2015 Citadel and oh man. I love this vehicle. Also own a 2013 300C and I will never own anything that’s not Mopar made. Incredible interiors for the money and the performance just won’t get better. Love my HEMIs
Very nice! I would take the R/T forr sure.
Considering buying a used 2018 Durango. Your review is great. We have a 2017 Pacifica so the controls etc. in the Durango seem familiar. We are keeping the Pacifica which we really like. Again really liked your review. RoyA
Congrats! Very nice !
Very nice worth looking into for my next purchase.
Nice.
Top of the line.
Congrats!
Congrats on this new Durango, Alex! Very nice review with the RT model as well.
Excellent video.
