The Mining Landscapes of County Wicklow by Drone

  • In 1853, eminent Victorian geologist, Warington W. Smyth, noted that 'the county of Wicklow has long enjoyed a celebrity due no less to its mines and minerals than to the natural beauties which adorn its landscapes'. This is no less true today, for County Wicklow, the Garden of Ireland, is also this island's foremost historic mining county. Shot in ultra HD video, this short film depicts aerial views of Wicklow's stunning wealth of surviving mining heritage features. It showcases the Glendasan, Glendalough and Glenmalure lead mines in the beautiful Wicklow Mountains, and the copper and pyrite mines in the picturesque Vale of Avoca.
    Music track featured in this film: 'Elegy' by Lisa Gerrard and Patrick Cassidy.

    What a different perspective on the mining legacy in Wicklow, beautiful filming and what a choice of music. I was hoping you would go for a shot from above one of the chimneys and loved the shot through the bridge. Lovely stuff :-)

    Absolutely thrilling Martin. You make me want to go to these places you love. Beauty of the wild and industry contrasted together. An interesting place. A class video. ATB Mark.

      +Wye Explorer Thanks, Mark. We feel that the extant remains of our mining industry enhance the beauty of the Wicklow landscape no end, from the truly amazing colours of the Avoca valley's soil and rock, to the abandoned buildings, which, for well over a century, have withstood the most severe weather in some of the remotest valleys in the Wicklow mountains. No visit to the 'Garden of Ireland' would be complete without seeing the remains of Ireland's most important mining region.

      martin critchley Hi Martin....the area sounds like a place to be fully immersed in for sure. My brother Paul bivvied in the Wicklow Mountains last year and he recommends it. We'll return...I get that feeling. You did it justice here. ATB Mark.

    totally amazing piece of work done on this. I love the area , i have been goin there for years from been a child there , but i have never got to see the mines at all , ive only been up to the ruins of cottage in off the road over the little bridge, i have taken many photos there , i was there last week, i really would love to find these mines .

    • @EtherealLightPhotography
      @EtherealLightPhotography  Před 8 lety +1

      +davypeugeot Thanks. I assume that you are referring to the building just across the river past the mines in Glendasan. This building was a forge for the mine. For more details see Journal 12 of the the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland (2012), obtainable from mparkes@museum.ie

      sorry i only seen this now Martin. Yes that is the building , i taught it was just a cottage ruin , there was a new walk way bridge put up not too long ago after the storms and water flow damaged the other one. Do i just email and purchase the journal ? thank you

    Any wildlife at all round these parts ? i understood there was some plan to clean up the whole area as there was raised levels of arsenic and other heavy metals in the area..certainly the Avoca river.
