Sophie told howl to find her in the future, that’s why at the beginning of the movie, howl said to sophie “there you are sweetheart. i was looking everywhere for you”
And he's wearing the ring and it sparkles, because he was using it to find her.
That's so romantic
This is one of my favorite movies and I didn’t notice/know about this! 💜💜Thank you for sharing!!
*sobs*
i've watched the movie 3 times now, this is my fourth, and THIS NEVER OCCURRED TO ME UNTIL NOW you are so perceptive i applaud. your comment just gave me a whole new perspective in their romance that's so sweet
58:14 according to the book, one of the reasons howl has his castle move around is literally tax evasion lmao
Sophie has this complex about how she looks, believing she is not beautiful. I feel when she is the most self-conscious the spell on her becomes stronger, feeding off of this negative energy and when she gains confidence and doesn't care about it so much she regains some of her original form. I've always felt that Howl's breakdown after dying his hair the wrong colour was something he did on purpose to get Sophie to realize that beauty isn't everything.
That's actually really interesting thank you
Howl has no idea what it would be like without beauty. Genuinely.
Sophie simply felt bad about being plain, which is perfectly understandable and not a “complex”, especially in this superficial world.
I think your assessment is just more condescending than anything.
Typical of what I see happen irl all the time.
It’s always the privileged people who lecture those without.
No thing is “everything”, but let’s be honest..appearances do color just about everything in life, to one degree or another, your whole identity is unfortunately filtered through how flesh appears.
Both overtly and covertly.
People should be far more compassionate and reasonable towards those who got the short end of the stick where beauty is concerned.
Sophie shouldn’t have to be blamed or punished for reacting normally to something that is undesirable.
Honestly, Howls breakdown over his hair is a weird little leftover from his character in the book, which is very different than the movie. It doesn't really fit with his personality in the movie and thus seems a bit weird and out of the blue. I can totally recommend the book btw. It's just as amazing as the movie but in a completely different way.
Hell, with a voice like Christian "Batman" Bayle around, who doesn't feel the same way?
in addition, in the book Howl actually tried to remove Sophie's spell (without her knowing) but Sophie was keeping the spell alive herself, unknowingly, because she had low self-esteem and believed being a grandma suited her better
I think she gets old again when her self esteem is low, but as it raises and she’s more confident in herself she gets younger
Not exactly self esteem but when she feels loved or cherished. That's pretty clear in the book but hard to understand in the movie.
In the book they make it clear that Sophie is a witch, and anything she says she's able to manifest into existence. So whenever she says that being an old lady far suited her, she just kept cursing herself into staying old. She becomes young in moments she _feels_ young
Omg what?! I never figured she was a witch. Maybe I should read the book
@@GoCrazyBaby3 You definitely should. Be warned though, Calcifer and Howl are not as likable in the book, you have to warm up to them gradually.
the story about Christian Bale goes as, he saw Spirited Away and loved it so much i wanted to be in a Studio Ghibli movie. So a few years later when they were casting for english voices, Christian put his name in and said he would voice any character they wanted him to do, he just wanted to be part of one of their movies. He ended up with the title character.
This entire movie is actually about insecurity. Sophie always thought she was ugly even though she wasn't. At the end of the movie, Sophie tells Howl to find her. That's why Howl had a reputation for going after pretty women bc he was looking for her. That's why in the beginning of the film when he first meets her he says "Oh I finally found you. I've been looking for you everywhere." The beautiful lady Howl was looking for was Sophie but bc she was so insecure at the beginning of the film she couldn't see that she was beautiful. I also think she started to break her curse when she started feeling confident. So it's kinda like she looks how she feels on the inside. And even someone as beautiful as Howl struggled with his own insecurities.
There is so much to this film. You have to watch it a few times to understand all of it. There are so many hints and call backs to moments in the film that make sense when you watch it again, also there is a lot of things up for interpretation which makes it so fun to talk to others about it in Miyazaki/Ghibli fan groups and spaces. Thats the magic of it. This is definitely one of his more over the top films when it comes to story and backgrounds and music. But I've watched this film for close to 20 years now, and it is a huge thing in my life, so I have my own ideas and way of understanding the story.
in the book, you learn that Sophie has magic too, but because she's the oldest and was always expected to be the responsible, mature one who did whatever the family wanted, she never really cultivated it. her power still manifests itself so that whatever she thinks/feels/believes becomes real in some way. for example, when she makes the hats for the shop, she absentmindedly talks to the hats and imagines the type of person who'll buy it (e.g. a pretty woman buys it, she catches the eye of a handsome guy she's had her eye on, they get married, etc.) and it comes true. the witch's spell lasts as long as Sophie continues to see herself in a negative light, which is why her "oldness" changes depending on her mood. in the book, howl recognizes this and has been trying to break her spell the whole time (even by telling her she's beautiful outright in the meadow scene) but Sophie's magic is just as strong or stronger than his.
My favorite part of the book was when Sophie told her walking stick to beat up someone and it did. I should reread it
You HAVE to watch “nausicaä of the valley of the wind” next. Its one of Gibli’s earliest movies and (in my opinion) one of their best. Highly recommend
I have seen this movie so many times and it hit different during pandemic lockdowns, especially with the part about not being able to go out without a mask on :P
So early, it's technically not ghibli yet, just made by all the founding members.
Yes!!!
The look of the "castle" being off putting is kinda funny, because especially for central and eastern Europeans aged 25-30 and older, it's a pretty familiar design, known from folklore as the "witch's hut on a chicken's leg" usually belonging to the Baba Yaga character. You could see it in the second Witcher season, which draws from it's Polish source material.
fun fact about Christian Bale in this movie! in the scene where he's the demon bird and he's got the growly voice like "you're too laaaate" -- we can assume this is his first use of the gravelly "batman voice", since Batman Begins didn't come out until a year later.
There are many mysteries in this movie. The contract between Calcifer and Howl, the true meaning of the curse cast by the witch of the wasteland and even though Sophie is unaware , she can use her magic. To be honest, I think this movie is difficult even for Japanese people .
It's because the movie is based off a three book series the movie is barely a third of the whole story so ofc there are gaps
I just realized recently that the reason why she made the castle collapse was so that they wouldn’t be seen and attacked
Everything about this movie is beautiful. I watch it whenever I feel down and need comfort.
I just love that Christian Bale is the voice of Howl
Making sense of soft worldbuilding is a battle you will never win lol
Yeah soft world building doesn’t bother me at all, but some people really get hung up on it! I just enjoy the ride lol
@@toastoast Exactly. I would rather have soft worldbuilding rather then hard worldbuilding that has tons of holes in it.
A lot of the more fantastical ghibli movies are made by Hayao Miyazaki. His movies tend to have strong themes about struggles that anyone may face, self confidence, self acceptance, perseverance, etc. He also frequently has themes of environmentalism, anti-war, and strong female characters that aren't defined by their love interest but also aren't opposed to love either. The plot and story of the movies is often so fantastical it can be confusing to follow, but I personally find that allows the viewer to really empathize and feel the emotions of the character. This can be further emphasized by the use of the animation to exaggerate the feeling of certain emotions like crying, things like tears may not be realistic, but often look like how it feels to cry instead of how someone else looks when they're crying.
this is one of my favourite movies in the entire universe. my dad got it for me for christmas as a kid, and i've been a tad obsessed ever since. i always wanted to be howl (he's a disaster, but he's a very pretty and cool disaster), and i can't watch this movie without crying - ESPECIALLY at the "i don't care if you're a monster" line.
That's the firdt Ghibli movie I saw on cinema
Ghibli and Miyazaki movies in general tend not to get bogged down with detail and exposition, there's other details and wordlbuilding there it's just not talked about or focused on if the characters have no reason to talk about it. I think the best way to enjoy miyazaki films is to just focus on the characters and themes and accept there's gonna be some weird unexplained stuff, but I think it's an interesting story telling technique because once you're used to it you can focus on the characters and themes more and you realize explaining every single thing isn't actually always necessary to make a compelling story.
Going back to the old Ghibli Disney Dubs is so weird when I realise how many huge actors were used to voice people... From Shia Labeouf to Christian Bale and Patrick Stewart
One of my favorite things about the movie vs the book is that in the book Howl is just some guy from Wales in our world in like the 80s. He’s even got an electric guitar lol.
hello. I am a Japanese. I think you guys like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Porco Rosso. That way, I think it will be easier to understand Hayao Miyazaki's philosophy. I heard that the full version is not on the market overseas, but please watch the uncut version as much as possible.
“Mama I’m a criminal” has me crying
I think the reason it's so hard to tell who is fighting who is because that's done on purpose to show how war itself is evil, and not one side in particular
I think maybe also that that is why both Calcifer and Howl were harmed by their link. Maybe there's the idea that a curse is often mutual?
I think it's wholesome how there is always a helpful comment section explaining movies to Americans
This was based on the books by Diana Wynne Jones. Howl's moving castle is the first in the trilogy. It's actually a great series!
I live the books read them.
wait its a trilogy?
@Parvonik yep! I didn't know it even had a sequel for a long time😅
@Parvonik the 2nd is Castle in the Air and the 3rd is House of Many Ways
18:24 Sophie looks young because that's how Howl always sees her, not just when he sleeps, he sees her young throughout the movie
where did you get this information though...
The best thing about studio ghibli (and japanese entertainment in general) is that they dont feel the need to explain everything. His name is howl, hes got a moving castle. Accept it and enjoy the movie hahaha
"Don't be alarmed, I'm being followed" has the same energy as "Stay calm, you've been poisoned."
The fact they're both Christian Bale lines killed me 😭
It's funny because in the book Howl is from our world. He's a college dropout from Wales and no one knows he's a wizard who spends most of his time in another world. He lives in his sister's garage and everyone thinks he's a bum and he kind of is. He's the type of bum who carries around a guitar even though he can't play it just so that he can look cooler for the girls 🤣 he also makes video games based on the fantasy worlds he travels to? And he can bring people to his world with him? The book is also confusing.
This is the one that got me hardcore into Ghibli this movie is my childhood😭 I cant wait!
If you guys like the magical aspects of the movie then you guys might like Kiki Delivery Service and The Secret World of Arrietty by Studio Ghibli :)
im so excited! this is one of my favourite movies and i have turnip head tattood on my arm lol, hope you guys continue with the ghibli stuff
I have him tattooed on my arm too! 🥰 turnip head is a special dude
"Ughh....why is that there?" 30:39 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So the best I can understand it, Sophie's curse is tied to her low self-esteem. So when she is either asleep, or not thinking about it, or confident, she looks young. It is also tied to how low her self-esteem is. When she really puts herself down in the guardian, she looks 90, but if she's having fun but still thinking about it, she looks younger like 50 or 70 but not young. And then at the end her self-esteem issues are gone so she looks her normal age again. It is also explained in the book that Sophie has magic her special magic is that she can nullify magic
Everybody's fave movie!!Never gets old...keep digging Studio Ghibili movies...😍😍😍
"Warning:Leviathan class creatures are in the area, are you sure what you are doing is worth it?"
I hope yall also hit some of the Ghibli's that other people don't usually react to! Almost all deserve some love
I really love your reactions and hope to see more Ghibli movie reactions in the future

It's really funny how people are left so confused after watching Ghibli movies
I’ve been so obsessed with the soundtrack and the movie itself for the longest time
This is why I prefer English dub in Ghibli Animation because Famous people do the voice acting.
This story always makes me cry... The music, the picture... So beautiful! I've read the book, it's quite different, but it has its surprises and connects our world to this world (those who have read it, you know what I mean). You should read the book for more "action" story, but this movie is a romantic interpretation that deserves the attention and love it gets.
I know Crispin Freeman mainly from The Slayers so I recognized his voice
what i think is that the curse on sophie is a curse to maker her look the way she feels about herself. At the very beginning we see sophie acting like an old lady, making hats and wearing non-stylish clothes; everyone around her also kept saying she acts like an old lady. So i think the curse makes her look like an old lady since thats how she feels about herself, but as soon as she fell in love with howl, and everytime she feels passionate and youthful she reverts back to a young lady, cuz the curse reflects how she feels. Now that she is love she feels young again, she finally feels youthful and looks that way
My favorite of the Ghibli movies is "Laputa: castle in the sky" I would love if you could check it out!
Seeing everyone's faces just not understanding the movie is hilarious. 🤣
I love how confused they were throught this xD Fun reaction guys
I sometimes forget the movie changed the ending entirely from the book. In the book, if I remember, they go fight the witch of the waste in her weird castle. Turnip head is still the son I think, but he's also possessed amd evil for a bit or something. It was a loaded series of events, so I don't blame them for changing it for the film. Still an amazing book.
I heard the author still loves the movie despite the changes.
Turnip is a magicians golem created by wizard sulliman to help him when the witch kidnaps him! And sulliman is a different character in the book. He's just the royal appointed wizard. The old lady that taught howl is Mrs. Pentstemmon, and she's not evil either. The king is also not evil, and there's no war going on (though there's talk that one might start soon between Ingary and a neighboring country) the only real evil character in the book is the witch. I adore the book.
Congratulations, BTW, on getting Mike Wazowski. It's a great feeling when you can't place a character or voice, and then you suddenly get it. :)
This is my favorite studio Ghibli move ❤️ But yes, it's really confusing. Hehe. I didn't understand it until a few viewings.
hi guys you must watch Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, is my fav fav fav movie from studio ghibli and i think you gonna freak out
Since the witch of the waste seemed to have wanted Howl's heart for a while, it's possible that when she saw him with Sophie at the beginning of the movie she got jealous and cursed her because of that
I agree that all the studio Gibli films iv'e seen are like in the 60 to 70's range except for Grave of the Fireflies. That movie is close to perfect in my eyes, I would have never seen any of these films if you guys hadn't watched them, Thanks
Well it IS based on a book, but it is in no way a children's book.
The book makes a lot more sense, there is a lot they had to cut.
This is a movie you gotta watch multiple times to really understand its meaning (or how you interpret its meaning)
It’s a story about a deeply insecure young Sophie who doesn’t love herself and has no real reason to live (she’s just going through the motions of society). She gets cursed to be old because it’ll make other men not be interest in her (physically) but this makes go and find a reason to live life
If by any chance you continue to explore Ghibli films I recommend Naussica/Porco Rosso and When Marin was there, those movies are easy to follow and are to me some of the best in Ghibli being my absolute favorite Naussica
I hope you guys have Ponyo and The Cat Returns on your list
I know this is from 8 months ago lol but READ THE BOOKS EVERYBODY they're so cute & funny & give a lot more context to the stuff in the movie, although the movie is pretty different from the first book it gives it a whole new perspective
35:04: The movie doesn't explain it very well, but the reason Sophie's mother tried to play the spy bug in her house in that Madame Suliman took her new husband hostage and made her do that in exchange for letting him go again. Thats why she says "take me to my husband" when she gets into the car.
Sophie was turning old because its how she feels on the inside. That she is not beautiful but in actuality she is
Yes, and she became young again when she finally had more confidence
I think everytime Sophie doesn't feel insecure she turns back into herself
This movie is Ghibli's greatest hit after Spirited Away and is based on a book by Diane Wynne Jones that loved the movie
Studio ghibli loved being it's own thing. Never uses the same paper cut out characters like in modern anime, that's why Hiyao miyazaki despise anime
darn, i thought it was already posted xD
SAME i was trying so hard to find it and i thought it was deleted XD
If you haven't seen them ,I'd recomend watching "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind",
"The castle of cagliostro"
These are Hayao's early works. you won't be disappointed.
Alice in Wonderland was my favorite as so I know I would’ve adored this and Spirited Away as a child 💜
Keep going guys, love these
5:12 Literally 😂
Howl's Moving Castle is actually based on a Children's novel by Dianne Wayne Jhones. It is a actually a trilogy and the sequel is castle ins the sky and then house of many ways. Miyazaki adapted his own versions of this: Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in th Sky not strictly following the book. I actually like both the visuals here may be better but the novel was in my humble opinion far more solid making sense wise. (also indeed the 1st to have a magic school concept the school was an imperial military wizardry academy) I would actually suggest reading it. Howl is far more one dynamic.
PLEASEE consider D.Gray Man is you like Full Metal Alchemist 🥺🙏🏻 PLEASE. Even if you don't react, please watch it. It is a hidden underrated GEM masterpiece.
This was my first anime movie
Sophie gets younger/breaks the spell when she forgets herself, gets carried away and stops feeling bad about herself. When she's reminded of it, she regresses.
Also, why do yall want live action versions of these incredible works of art? What would a live action adaptation do that isn't already done better here??? Why do you want to see beautiful hand drawn animation replaced by shitty CGI?
thank you for watching one of the og anime in History
I dont think sophie's curse is resolved cuz u see her hair stays white in the end, but she will stay young cuz she is always confidence from now on.
Great reaction!
50:27 funny you'd say that becouse there is a book and a sequel!
Sophie She can be younger because she is in love with Hall so the conclusion is simple The power of love can remove any curse
本当に何度観ても泣ける
Was Adam talking about animal crossing for the turnips 😂
In anime the question isn’t why, it’s why not
the voice acting comes through much better in the japanese version but im still glad you watched this!
Please react to studio Ghibli 's
1, 風の谷のナウシカ Nausicaa of the valley of the wind . ( Original Japanese audio 👍️ )
2 天空の城 ラピュタ Castle in the Sky .( Original Japanese audio🙏 )
Love turns us younger. Same happen to sophie
When I watched Howl's, I liked it but I've never completely understood it aside from the things that get resolved in the end.
To me Spirited Away is the better story.
Howl always saw her as she is..
I love the book significantly more than the movie. Honestly, the only thing that saves the movie for me is that I saw it first, lol. The movie is good, but the story each medium tells is vastly different from the other, and I prefer the message and purpose behind the book's story.
There's so many things that are really cool in the book too! Sophie herself is a witch, though it takes quite a while for her to figure that out, and the way her magic constantly goes awry without her intention is always so funny (like the impressive weed killer that she creates and her alterations to Howl's suits, lmao). The big bad is the Witch of the Waste, WAY more intimidating and powerful than what is seen here. We actually get MAGIC in the book, hugely awesome and impressive battles between Howl and the witch! Howl is a bitchy diva, but still we see his heart of gold (undercharging poor people, taking in both Michael and Sophie, risking his life to go to his teacher's funeral, etc.), and we see his intelligence, cleverness, and bravery (outsmarting the witch during the Porthaven battle, going toe-to-toe with the witch multiples times to protect his family and also Sophie. There's a connection to the our world, a revelation that is shocking and yet so cool! Howl and Sophie have much better chemistry, each of them dry and snarky and biting, yet still good to one another; when they reveal their love at the end of the book, it feels earned, and it feels so natural, like of course these two people are meant to be together forever. Sophie isn't nerfed in the book like she is in the movie (my biggest overall complaint): the book looks at issues like self-confidence, self-esteem, learning, struggling, and finding one's own strength, rather than primarily being a teary-eyed love interest. The curse that's after him is insanely clever, the way it comes at him from his greatest weakness, and the way each step plays out, each time forcing his own hand with each movement it makes to get closer to him.
lol. I started rambling, and now I want to go and reread the book. It's one of my top 5 favorite novels, no contest. I strongly encourage anyone who likes reading to go and read this one.
Additional note: the two sequels, "Castle in the Air" and "House of Many Ways," though not quite as good as the first, are both well worth reading, especially the final one. Howl and Sophie appear again in both of them, though not as the main characters.
my favorite movie ever..
Yeah so in the book Howl is from our dimension, and the black spot hellscape he goes to in the movie? Yeah, that's Wales in the book, because Howl is Welsh.
From ghibli, please react to Ponyo
Man I really want you guys to react to Vision of Escaflowne anime series! But I don't know or where to send you though... it's one of the best animes ever~
hope you watch and react to the movie Ghibli Ponyo director Miyazaki hayao is very passionate about Ponyo hope you see it as soon as possible thanks
Ponyo next please!!!
❤❤❤
Howls moving castle is a book.
IM NOT WEARING HOCKEY PADS
Amazing
19:19 *Well, you can always be thinner... look better.*
So, the whole time Sophie was gone, how did her family react?
