Great video! Thank you for sharing! My daughter was diagnosed at 6 with a high glucose level of 1,500 and her brain was starting to swelled up. She’s here by the mercy of God almighty! She’s 18 now I still cry till this day when I talk about it. When doctor told me in the ER she was diabetic I literally collapsed I felt like my breath was taken away. Like you there was nobody in my family with type 1. My daughter was hospitalized for a whole week literally fighting for her life. My story was similar to yours. My daughter was peeing a lot we took her to her pedetrician never a blood test was taken. They told us it was just a cold! They send us home with antibiotics but as days went by she wurst losing much more weight. And the minute she started throwing up non stop and her eyes sunked I just knew something was not right. I thank the Lord for his love and grace for us! Hadn’t not been for his mercy my daughter wouldn’t be here right now! Once again thank you for sharing gator story! I just shared mines with you ❤ God bless ❤🙏

This is going to be a long one and I know your video is 2 years old but I just felt compelled to share our story. So happy to see your daughter is thriving
My daughter was just diagnosed with Type 1 at 20 months old. December 25, 2022 was the day. I took her to a local children's hospital 5 days prior, Dec 20th. I felt like she was very winded after playing, getting the hiccups every time she drank. It was very unusual for her to be breathing like that. We get to the ER, I explain the symptoms. Of course she wasn't as active in the ER waiting room so her breathing was much closer to normal. They swabbed her for RSV, flu, and covid and then we waited hours in the waiting room. They finally pull us into a room and then I get the lab results from the swab, which say she's positive for covid, though she had zero symptoms of a respiratory infection. The ER doc and nurses said I probably just caught her being sick with covid right at the beginning of the infection. They release us and the next day, she started to show signs of an upper respiratory (sneezing, runny nose, tired, no fever but still panting with zero play and breathing heavy after play). My husband kept saying he didn't like her breathing and I agreed but she was sick so we just treated her as if she was sick. She was still playing, eating, and drinking for the next few days, except doing a little less eating and playing. She continued to drink constantly. The other symptom to note, that I didn't think to mention is that for the prior few weeks, she had been urinating through her diaper. every. night. Even with overnight diapers and booster pads. Christmas Eve arrives (Saturday) and she's much more lethargic, not interested in eating anything, still drinking lots. I call our pediatrician on call and they say as long as she's drinking, she should be ok. If she doesn't seem to wake up or has more sleepy periods than alert, we should take her back to the ER. She was easy to wake, would sit up and watch TV for awhile and then fall back asleep. Still panting as well. My husband decides to sleep with her in the recliner. She ends up vomiting overnight and it looked like coffee grounds so I knew that was dried blood and she was definitely sicker than we originally presumed. Back to the ER she goes, same hospital. It's very early on Christmas Day. She has a wheeze to her breathing at this point, which I ended up finding out was Kussmaul breathing because she was in diabetic ketoacidosis (her blood sugar was 317 in the ER) and that she was very sick. Scariest time of my mom life. We ended up being admitted and stayed a few days so that I could learn all about managing her Type 1 diabetes. Come to find out, sometimes it's a viral infection that triggers T1D. All 4 of us (mom, dad, and twin bro) were sick at the beginning of December with what we thought was a cold. My husband and I tested ourselves for covid at that time and we were negative. But that is right around the time the very wet diapers overnight started. I didn't correlate that symptom with the water drinking and then the panting and breathing. I still get disappointed with the ER of the children's hospital on the December 20th visit because I feel like they determined she had covid and that was it. There was no breathing treatment, didn't pull blood. And I wish I would have pushed on the staff a little bit harder. Her endocrinology team is fantastic (same hospital system). She started to get more alert and a little more like herself about 12 hours after she started receiving insulin. They wanted to bring her out of dka slowly because they wanted to ensure she didn't end up with swelling on her brain.
It's all new and I still get super anxious but I am thankful for families that get on YT and TikTok to discuss how they live and manage this diagnosis. Now I'm looking up more info on insulin pumps because that is going to be her next step. She was prescribed a Dexcom G6 upon discharge and we've been using that. I too get very choked up talking about it. I think the hospital experience was traumatic for my daughter but she may not remember that. It will always be traumatic for me, until the day that I die. Thank you for sharing!

Hi, my name is Jeff Chandler, I am a type 1 diabetic. I understand what your daughter had gone through. I'm 49 years old and I was missed diagnosed at the ER in Panama City Florida. Than God for mother's like you, I was 16 years old, and I was at a church youth retreat, second day of the retreat, I started getting sick throwing up and going to the bathroom constantly, my Youth leader, had me stay at the hotel room, next day morning I wasn't really coherent, so the youth group leader took me to the hospital ER, I had gone into DKA, the er doctor ruled me as having the flu. My mother was called, she got there about a hour and half later. I was to the point where I was going comatose, my mother insisted on the doctor doing a blood sugar test, my sugar was 1389. I technically was dead, my Dad was stationed at Ft. Rucker Alabama, she was told to search for a pediatric endocrinologist, my mom was my advocate, she found a pediatric endocrinologist that had just got stationed at Ft. Rucker. He agreed to take my care, he ordered things to happen while I was there in Panama City Florida ER. They insisted on me being transported to Ft Rucker. When I left the ER my blood Sugar was 896. I have been through alot in my life with my diabetes. But I want your daughter to know, life is full of wonders, and challenges. But she is going to do good in her life, she got a Mom and Dad that care about her and love her. God Bless you for posting your daughter's story. Thank you for everything you are doing to speak about type 1 diabetes. God Bless you and, tell your daughter that I am pulling for her. God Bless you guys. - Jeff Chandler.

The ordeal that you had to go through is totally unacceptable. Those "doctors" who saw her that day at the hospital and disregarded your opinion as a mum should be held accountable for their incompetence. There was enough info given that they should've known it wasnt just a chest infection, but the fact that they didn't listen to you and at least take a blood test to be sure, is the cherry on top for me. I'm so glad it all ended up okay for you all ❤

My son was diagnosed a year ago and now he is about to go on the tandem T-slim x2 pump next month and I’m trying to find as much as I can on the pump and for kids but there is not much available. Thank you for telling and showing your daughters diabetes journey. It is very helpful and only another T1D parent can understand the feelings but I do. Sending you and your family hugs and I wish Emma a very happy and healthy life 💞

I cried hearing your story. Fortunately we caught my daughters on time. My daughters symptoms was excruciating stomach pain. Other than that, no other symptoms. Surprisingly the day I took her in the hospital l, they was able to diagnose her the same day. I’m so happy that she’s fine now. Once I told my family and friends what is wrong with my daughter, I truly hated when they make the assumption of me giving my daughter loads of candy and that’s why she has diabetes. I do understand that they’re not really educated on type 1 because it’s not common here but having to explain just gets so tiring

It was hard at first and it still is but it will get a lot better throughout the months. Just know even when diabetes sucks and it is so hard just don't give up. You need to be strong for your child. Also know that you and your child are going to get through this and it will be okay.

My 8 yr old got diagnosed 3 months ago. It came out of nowhere. I have 2 older children with nothing. We got our dexcom 1 week in, and our insulin pump t-slim with control IQ 1 month in. We got it sooner than later bc I have a very big mouth. Also similar to you I was an lpn for 15yrs plus. Don't work anymore. I'm the type of person who has always controlled things. Well not with this Diagnosis. Gabriel my son is in honeymoon phase right now. So I realized that he does better with zero basal rate running for school, and no carbs for breakfast and lunch on school days. It just makes it easier. That way he gets to play gym class without double arrows down. Bc the insulin running at school would drop him low, and the carbs at school makes all kinds of variables happen. He spikes. He drops. With no carbs, no problem. He was dropping and having to leave class to go have a snack at the nurses office. Bc of covid, couldn't eat in classroom. He had an A1C of 12.5 in ICU in hospital in Jan, 2022. At follow-up appt he was a 9.1. Last week March 31 he was a 7. So I pray he keeps going down. Good luck to you all. Pray for us.

Sounds alot like my daughters story. She was diagnosed March 1st 2022. But from the beginning of January she became extremely sick. The doctors kept saying she had an ear infection and then a cold. My gut said otherwise. We took her so many times to get her checked out and they miss diagnosed her each time. I called my mom "she works as a nurse/paramedic " and I was like mom she just yelled from.the bathroom and she had actually blood in her urine. She's lethargic and she lost a lot of weight and her sides were killing her by the simplest movements. My mom said she is sepsis take her to Peyton manning children's ER now. So we rush to the hospital it's about an hour away. We get there and they admit her and run all these test. The next day we left with the answer her kidneys were extremely injured and she had a kidney infection. 2 days later her kidney specialist calls and tells my husband her hemoglobin does not look right and she was very worried that her sickness is very serious and that we needed to bring her to the children's hospital that moment. So we did and I remember walking up to the window and all these nurses come they were waiting on daughter they were ready. And she is most definitely type 1 diabetic and she could've died from 3 whole months of mistreating!!

We have family members that are diabetic. My daughter was 6 when she was diagnosed. She wasn't feeling well she was thirsty all the time and having accidents at night. We decided to check her sugar and she was so high. I called an on call dr. and said I think my daughter is diabetic her sugar is hi. She said to take her to the ER. She is 10 now and will be getting her first pump soon. I know how you feel about the Dr. My OB falsely diagnosed me with gestational diabetes and my sugars were never hi. I had to have stress tests done for the baby because I was supposedly high risk. There were a few days that movement was low and heartbeat wasn't that great. For being "high risk" he did not give me any ultrasounds in the 3rd trimester. I was induced because my contractions were causing babies heartrate to drop. Our baby almost died. The cord was wrapped twice around his neck when he was born. Know one knew because there was no ultrasound done since we found out the gender. I should have had a c-section. Everyone was expecting the complications to be because of gestational diabetes. He was born a normal healthy baby with no signs of a gestational pregnancy. He was in respiratory distress because of the cord strangling him. He spent a week in the NICU. Some doctors get tunnel vision and it is at your expense. Glad your girl is doing ok and happy.

I don’t really look at nutrition facts but after my mom reached 600 high blood sugar we started looking. It was definitely scary. Educators from dietician and diabetic came into our rooms too checking all the time. So, we learned how to control the high blood sugar from that experience. We got discharged after 1 week. But then we went back into hospital because she got low at 50. The reason being they had given her insulin that day we went home. It was still in her system and they told us to start taking the medications when she was to have dinner that night. It’s funny how I translate for my mom and they didn’t tell me that. They told my mom…didn’t call me to let me know what happened. Pharmacist from the store called me and asked “did you guys get admitted In the hospital again?” I said yes. they had received mom’s medications and dose is different than what they had given me before. They said they were sorry she had to go back to hospital. Because we all were reading the paper stating take medications asap. She was hollering from the meds she didn’t know what was happening to her. 😭
but I pray your daughter your family stay blessed.

Something similar actually happen to me. I had the same symptoms of your daughter. I’m in my teens now. I was 7 when this happen. One morning I woke up and I had to use the bathroom really bad and I used the bathroom. And eat some cereal. Just a couple of bites and I didn’t want no more. My grandparents woke up and said if I wanted to go to the store with them. I did. My grandmother and I were walking around and I had to use the bathroom again and was super thirsty. I got water and used the bathroom. I used the bathroom at least 3 times while we were shopping. The next day I had school. I went to school and I looked very pale and my eyes where sunken in. I felt sick. And told my mother I didn’t want to go to school. But she said if you don’t feel good then I’ll pick you up. I felt better but the teachers were concerned about how I was acting. They brought me to the nurse. No temp no runny nose. My friends invited me to play soccer with them. I didn’t want to. I sat there at the wall just sitting there. I fell asleep from being tired. And I had used the bathroom 3 times already. And I asked to go for the 4 and my teacher refused to allow me to go for suspicious of goofing around. Talking to other children. And I just felt the same. Then a week pasted and my grandmother said to my mom that I need to go to the doctors. She took me there and I ended up in the Emergency Room. If my mother didn’t take me to the doctors the next week I would have been dead. It’s just so scary to think about this kind of stuff.

Emma’s pre-diagnosis symptoms were very much like my granddaughter’s at 27 months old; acting odd, laying on the floor, double soaking her diaper, craving milk, sunken eyes and grey complexion, etc. Traumatic and overwhelming doesn’t even describe the feelings!! Eleven years later, granddaughter is now 13. She uses a Dexcom and an Omni Pod pump. Many people have no idea how challenging T1d can be. May Emma have only minor issues in the coming years.
