    Thanks for stopping by for our mechanics & theme board game review of Rococo Deluxe Edition. We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

    Thanks for the great review! That’s a good point about the heteronormative aspect to the goals, I’m sorry to say that never occurred to me. But that’s exactly why I’m so happy to see you both sharing your voices :)

      Thank you for bringing this world to life in a way that brings such joy to our table! We really appreciate you taking the time to comment about the goal that I mentioned in the game, that truly means a lot to us (and I'm sure others watching 😊). Thanks Ian 🥰

      I don't think it occurs to a lot us Ian. As a straight white man, it's not like I go around feeling lucky because there are so many examples in popular culture of people similar to me or, as in this particular situation, game mechanics that mimic my lifestyle, I just have no appreciation for it whatsoever because it's just been a given all my life. So much so, that I'm not even aware of the benefits or the comfort this provides. It is only when you see, for example, the joy on a black child's face at finally having a black superhero go mainstream such as Black Panther, or read the type of comment Amy made about feeling sad at lack of inclusion that I realize that inclusion is not automatic for so many people and I consider how lonely this could make somebody feel. While I consider myself pretty well informed and aware of issues such as this, I don't think I would have ever considered it in the board game arena if it had not been for this video. So I agree with you, it is great that Amy and Maggie are sharing their voices and I hope they inspire more people to do so.

      The heteronormative aspects are an issue. The game takes place in France hundreds of years ago with a bunch of religious Christians who are trying to marry for nobility and offspring, not sex and love like the modern day. Absurd to complain about a history theme like this. No one plays a game about this time period and expects it to look like the modern day

    😂
    Talking about thematic integration, one bit that I really like is the musicians in each hall giving you the tie breaker. Every time a person that wears one of your dresses comes into the hall, the music accompanies them for a great entrance, you can also imagine the change of tune for one of your competitors. It's such a fun theme.

    I really enjoy the way you tackle board games and your reviews videos are from the best in my opinion. You have a way to explain the game through the theme that makes it more approachable and understandable and when you treat the mechanics of the game its a perfect way to understand if someone will enjoy the game or not, according to what a person searches in a game experience. Really enjoy your content, keep it up girls and always have fun!

    I have been putting off watching your review because I knew I would want it! Maggie's comments on solo give me pause, though, because that is part of my justification for such a steep price tag. I think the production quality is there, but that's all for naught if it isn't getting played enough. And I have no idea how I would store such a massive box. Your comments on the expansion and player count were really helpful. I definitely want the game, but may seek out the older edition without the expansion. Since we don't like tension, the 2P sounds like it would be perfect for us. Wonderful review, as always!

    Your point on variability is important to me and I look for reviewers to cover this in any game I look up. I would have thought the expansion modules significantly improve the variability, no? I've wanted to play this game for years, but I only wanted the new version. When it came up for sale I jumped on it, but before I pick it up I'm checking reviews for things I might have missed.

    Thank you so much for your review! I was awash in your excitement, I keep going back and forth on picking this game up, I have a large collection and I was worried this overlapped too much with Pret-a-Porter, but seeing this as a step up from 'gateway' means that it might just earn a place on my shelf. Also, I really appreciate your assessment of diversity in the game's artwork and mechanics, I too would like to see less heteronormativity in games, especially a game themed around *FASHION* no less! Keep up the great work, you're an inspiration!

I'm glad the diversity/heteronormativity conversation resonated, I always say these things a little timidly but it does impact on my play experience (and others' by the lovely comments being left) so I really do appreciate the support. We don't own Pret-a-Porter but this one definitely seems much more gateway, and linear in what you need to get done as there are not too many options. I knew you two would enjoy this! Can confirm that 3 players is absolutely wonderful - also such a great point that the most variety is going to come from adding more players rather than expansions. We found the expansions ranging from meh (fancy dresses) to eugh (jewelry box). We absolutely loved this game, except the price was so steep. Maz keeps saying he wants to sell it, but then we play it and it earns another few months of shelf life. Great review legends! ~N

    Such an exquisite looking game. From the first moment I saw this reprint (IAN O'TOOLE) I was sold. Theme wise, I was not sure, but after seeing some play throughs it seems so inviting to play. So when Mercado de Lisboa launched their campaign i grasped the chance to add this one to the collection. So, I am still waiting for this one, but maybe april could be the month to drool over this. I think the solo can be hit or miss depending on the hand she draws. As you shuffle her large deck between every round, you may end up where she doesn't make many dresses in your game, or doesn't place in every room...ect. You might be able to cull her deck of cards to make the odds of her making a dress more likely removing some that simple block you cards ( like hiring or getting resources. ) But I have had games that the cards that came up in her hand wrecked me and others where she didn't really get in my way. It's okay and fun to solo, but not the best for strategic purposes as her actions are random and sometimes makes no sense for area control. Maybe play with her placing in evrey room first before using the card to dictate placement. ( highest to lowest )

    Another excellent video! I have the original and the deluxe because I couldn’t pass up the chance to get the Ian O’Toole artwork and fancy components. Still debating whether to part with the original. Silly story - first time I played this game, I played it like a deck builder instead of selecting my cards... I think it was the evening of day 2 or 3 of a convention, so my brain must have already been fried. I haven’t tried it solo yet, but it sounds like it might not be enough of a challenge relative to the game set-up time. Thank you for bringing light to the heteronormative aspect of the game, and I love your authenticity. I’m a big fan of this game and was fortunately able to pick up a second hand copy of the original edition from Egertspiele. I genuinely don’t understand Eagle-Gryphon pricing so many out of such a great game and was pretty annoyed when the KS ran that they didn’t offer a more affordable option. The production of the new edition is amazing, but for the game experience it offers (and the replay issues you rightly mention) I just don’t think it justifies the huge price tag.

    Another awesome review! I love Rococo Deluxe but have only managed to play it solo several times in my attempt to learn it. With the pandemic, I haven’t had the chance to get this to the table with others. The large table presence was too intimidating for my partner, who will play some of the more lightweight games with me. I cannot wait to play this with others. But I do feel the same way about the Jewelry expansion. Very much feels like an add on vs integrated. Thank you so much for mentioning the diversity and heteronormative comments. It is so important to put those out there for the designers to hear. As for solo difficulty, I might try just adding +1 or 2 prestige points when “Madam” gets them, for a scaling difficulty. Not sure it is a balanced approached but might work. Again, I just love watching you two and am always excited when I see a new video notification! Fantastic review as always. What would you say for those who already own the previous version? I have to say I looked at the changes and didn't think the expense was justified for what is a relatively light Euro, even though I love Ian O'Toole's art. I went ahead and got a previous copy on the second hand market for around 1/4 of the price! Your comments about the solo mode and the expansion make me think they don't add enough to make it worth upgrading?

      Hm interestingly if we owned the original it might not get as much table time for us... the deluxification is part of the 'theatre' for us and really draws us in. So I think if you value those things the art and components are worth it but no I wouldn't say the expansion and solo mode justify the big box (in our humble opinions 😊). Another wonderful review of a game I'd love to play, but I can't see this one coming to my collection. The theme is great, the game play sounds awesome, but space considerations in our 2BR apartment mean it will have to live elsewhere. Table presence may be phenomenal, but it can't justify that shelf or closet presence. I'd have to lose 2-3 games just to make room for it. Sigh. Now as for the "better half" discussion, Cathy is my better 2/3 and if I'm honest that's probably rounding down a fair amount. :-)

And if you're not catering to groups of new players frequently (at higher player counts) it might not get enough play to warrant it... sooooo maybe just find a friend with it or play it at a con when we are all back to normal! • @zzees
      @zzees Před 3 lety

      @@ThinkerThemer I enjoy just having to overcome the events that take place at the beginning of the each round- kind of working together with other players. You could also disrupt other players if you scheme accordingly, muhahaha. I like that you have a way to mitigate your die rolls, which is a huge part of gameplay. Secret goals! You have to pay attention to what other players are doing, and not let them go heavy into one thing or they'll outscore you at the end of the game. There's a bit of player interaction without it being too harsh, but it's there and you will use it to your advantage or their disadvantage. There's a lot of options and gameplay is fairly elegant. I have to agree that the theme is on the thin side, however I adore the art style in all it's beigeness - or is it taupe. Skip the expansion at lower player counts, however I find it enjoyable at a full player count. For game that's about 12 years old at this point, it has aged fairly well and in its' day I would consider it innovative.
      Another game a little bit more current, and somewhat similar, would be Black Angel. Black Angel is its disconnected garish overcooked spiritual successor, it's more of a space theme, which doesn't resonate with me unfortunately. I still prefer Troyes, but I still enjoy Black Angel - even though it doesn't seem like it. I want to love it but I just don't.
      At the end of the day Troyes just works for us. It has just enough player interaction without it being too mean. For games that are to mean I end up getting the what for, which generally isn't very pleasant.

    Thank you for the video!

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  Před 3 lety +2

      Generally no! Which is strange because she is very musical. Maybe it's for the same reason she can't listen to music while working - it is too distracting for her. Actually sometimes if we've been playing and had music on the tv she just zones out completely [BABE IT'S YOUR TURN!] We did do it with Betrayal Legacy... we played scary music and it actually made me terrified so I can definitely see the worth of adding music! What is your favourite game / music combo?

    • @Projected1
      @Projected1 Před 3 lety

      @@ThinkerThemer Hehe, she might just be so deep into the theme that she is planning 4 moves ahead based only on what would the character do and you broke that streak she was on...inside her head lol. Anyways, my wife and I love playing music while playing board games. Usually, I create thematic playlists on Spotify and listen play those. Other times, we just like playing some chill background music. It's kind of funny because the other day we randomly heard a song on the car radio that we had previously heard while playing a game and we both just laughed and said that we wanted to play that game again. It's almost like we have been conditioned to relate certain songs to playing. Now, to answer your question, I think my favorite music playlist/game combo atm is Tidal Blades and the playlist I made for it. It fits so well! It has its cute relaxing moments, its epic encounters, scary songs for when we go to fight monsters, etc. Actually, excuse me while I go set it up to ;)

    Excellent review. You both has such a great conversational style that has me so eager to play the game by the end of the review. Oh, and I don’t think you have to be a gay man to be pulled in by this theme lol. As for the Herero normative issue, I personally feel this game gets a pass because of its historical theme but your comment did get me thinking about how many board games actually buck this trend and I could not think of any. Now, I’m new to the hobby so there might be a whole swath of games that I am unfamiliar with but somehow I doubt it. It really would be nice to see companies and designers improve on this situation. On the bright side, I think the quality of your videos and the impression you seem to have made on the industry in such a short period of time may lead to raised awareness and gradual change.

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  Před 3 lety +1

      Hahaha! No sorry I didn't mean it to sound like you needed to be a gay man to enjoy the theme hahaha.. just that, I think our assessment of how exciting the theme is was probably somewhat biased by the fact we only played with different groups of gay men LOL. Re: the objective issue for male/female pairings... I do think that even historical games should try to be more diverse in their representations (even if being gay in those times was not as "out" as now). But you are right that it's fairly common oversight in gaming. When we were younger we just got used to it (visibility was much lower than today) so we tend to overlook it mostly but there is still a part of me that makes me sad. It's a big part of why we started the channel, for visibility. So it means a lot to hear your lovely feedback and to have your support. Thanks for watching and taking the time to write this. 😊

    • @Edward1140
      @Edward1140 Před 3 lety

      @@ThinkerThemer oh I certainly didn’t take you seriously about the gay man comment. I thought it was funny. As for diversity in historical games, I think I should clarify. The reason I thought this game should get a pass is that it was not just an historical game but a game about parading the characters in public at the kings ball. Not the ideal time and place for demonstrating progressive views of any kind lol. Not that it would have mattered if the designers had adopted your idea. It’s about time some of them did. That being said, at least with board games as opposed to some other forms of entertainment, the character bios are vague enough that we can all develop backstories for them on our own. Although that is probably way too thematic for you haha. Thanks again for the great videos.
