Lately I have been getting TONS of questions on the Hyper Neo Geo 64 hardware! Should I buy one? What are the best games? Is the arcade hardware worth it? Well...that's not an easy retro gaming related question to answer! Then I realized...I never revisited by years ago early channel videos on the Samurai Shodown 64 / Samurai Spirits 64 games...so lets do that!
Patreon Thanks : Seth Peterson, Tim Hugall, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson,
RayceARoni, Tyler Ohlew, Kuranghi, Jason Hixon, Sam Matthews, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Bob Maladroit, Steve Randall, shotgunl, Andrew Bunch, K-2, Eric Walklet, J Z, Ivan Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane, David Rhodus, tobemorecrazy, Mark and
Mike Puelinckx, Shad Uttam, Dan L and James Mann!
The Hyper Neo Geo 64 has seven total games; Fatal Fury Wild Ambition, Samurai Shodown 64 (also known as Samurai Spirits), Samurai Shodown 64: Warriors Rage (also known as Samurai Spirits 64 2), Buriki One, Beast Busters: Second Nightmare, Round Trip RV and Offbeat Racer. So we get arcade fighting games from SNK, arcade racing games from SNK and one arcade lightgun game from SNK! But...we've revisited everything outside of the Samurai Shodown games!
Plus all seven of these games qualify for both obscure video game and rare video game status...so we have to revisit a classic like Samurai Spirits 64

I think one of the reasons this pair of games feel 'heavier' is because, outside of them being intentionally slower paced, they also only update the display every other frame (so effectively giving 30fps, even if a few elements update on the 'between' frames)
This may in part have been to reduce the effect of the interlace screenmodes being used, much as why I think Buriki and Fatal Fury run the floor in pixel doubled mode, it makes shearing problems less obvious as the fields stay in sync. The CPU remains idle for a lot of every other frame too, which again makes me think it was intentional.
There's no doubt SNK were still trying to work out how to get the best results out of the hardware and were no doubt running into many problems they didn't see coming when it was designed.
Here is a fun little bit of weirdness for you; if you seat the cart just RIGHT...in the wrong way, you can get the game to run at 15 FPS and it will stutter like crazy. Its rare but its a fitment issue and the first time I found it I was very confused. Not sure if its an access to ROM speed issue or if a certain signal is slowed down...but its odd
I preferred the first 63 Samurai Shodown games.
Samurai Shodown 69 is where the series really took off
@@VideoGameEsoterica Samurai Shodown 420 took things higher tho
🤣
The first arcade game that I ever played was Samurai Shodown in a little arcade at the back of a local movie theater. The series has had a special place in my heart since then and I've played pretty much all of the games and own them on various platforms including MVS. I remember seeing a preview article for Samurai Shodown 64 in an issue of Tips & Tricks magazine just before it came out. I was super hyped for it but I never came across an arcade cabinet for it or any other Neo Geo 64 games. Last year I was able to get a hold of a brand new motherboard and luckily found someone who was willing to sell me both the Samurai Shodown 64 games and Fatal Fury Wild Ambition. I think they're very fun and I've enjoyed playing them. I hope that emulation keeps improving so that more people can experience them instead of the awful PSX ports / sequels (Wild Ambition port and Warriors Rage *sequel(?)).
The fact SNK released two games both called Warriors Rage and they are different games will never NOT confuse me.
Impressive you found a 64 cart. Not easy these days!
Keep Hyper Neo Geo 64 alive. I enjoyed your video. Thanks! 😁👌
Glad you enjoyed it :)
I *should* check out Samurai Shodown 64 and Warriors Rage on MAME since they were the two games I was truly interested in on the Hyper Neo Geo 64. The only game I got to play on the hardware in the 90s was Roads Edge, which was fun but not a huge stand-out racer. I know were I can play Beast Busters and its sequel these days if I get a chance, but I don't know about the fighting games on the system...so I need to just give them a try on MAME. Samurai Shodown games, including 64 here, may be slow, but I really love the series, and I from what you've said here, I believe one of the reasons you like this one is the reason I like the games in the series: the sense of impact-weight and movement-weight to the combat. It's something that many fighting games fail to capture, yet "weight" is one of the things that truly give meaning to the combat and make it feel satisfying. It's something Samurai Shodown does well (and, though it's combat is not as refined as Capcom and SNK's efforts at the same time, Midway/Williams really got sense-of-impact right coming out of the game with the first Mortal Kombat as well as MK2 [MK3/UMK3/Trilogy kind of loss some of that]...MK1 may not have as good of a fighting engine as some of its peers, but, whew, did it feel satisfying to play...). I definitely need to try this one out (and get caught up on the Sega arcade racer series and other videos); I think I'd quite enjoy it. Also, do you have any guess on why most of the Neo Geo Hyper 64 games never got home ports? I played the PSX version of Wild Ambition at a friend's house back when he picked it up, but I didn't have any context at the time to compare it to the arcade version.
Hey Shotgunl I haven't seen you pop up in a minute. Got you out of hiding with Sam Sho 64 eh? Hope all is well! And yes...def try them in MAME. You can get close to the full experience
I really enjoyed Samurai Shodown 64 in the arcades VGE. I still like it and think it was a fun game to play for it's time being offered to the public bro. Thank you for stopping by the Neo-Geo thread and sharing this with us bro. 8^)
Anthony...
Always happy to do it
Ah, the Hyper NeoGeo 64,it was mythical hardware for me. I never saw it anywhere, only read about some vague specs as a kid, and it was dissapointing to learn eventually that it wasn't as powerful as I had imagined. But still as a kid I wanted to know what it could do so badly :P.
Sure it "ain't no Model 3" :P , but I'm so glad we know so much more about it now and have working hardware and emulation to play with :) .
It’s fun for what it is and it’s my fav oddball system
I remember seeing screenshot of this game in Game Masters magazine eons ago and thought the game was cancelled.
Nope, just barely distributed outside of Japan
I mean to be fair when this game came out Soul Edge was already out for nearly two years, and it's a far better game.
They feel mechanically different enough where I never compare them. Mostly based on speed
Thank goodness SNK never released a console version of the Hyper Neo Geo 64. Imagine how nightmarish it would be for parents buying a game for their kid’s N64 because it has 64 in the title, only to realize the game’s meant for a completely different console!
Hahaha I think you’d discover quickly the slight size difference in cart size (in all reality a home Hyper console would have had to have been CD based)
I remember this game. I never got to play it though. It looks brilliant. Hopefully the core comes to the MiSTer at some stage in the future
That I don’t expect to happen. Hyper is beyond complex in the amount of silicon it uses so fitting that in an FPGA…oof
@@VideoGameEsoterica It might need the next gen of Intel FPGAs to make it happen. Hopefully it does though to preserve this classic!
I mean the FPGAs exist that could fit it now…but NOBODY is gonna want to pay for them. We need 5-10 years for the costs to come down
Great looking game for those us old enough to remember the landscape at that time. Is there any word on if and when the MAME developers will focus on fixing the remaining issues?
They are actively fixing issues now. I’ve sent them some new captures to help
I've never actually played the 3D Sam Sho games. Definitely would like to get to them some day!
Don’t wait. They are not getting any cheaper. Sadly probably already worth more than I’d recommend anyone pay
It's a shame this game never got a PS1 port like its (inferior) sequel or Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition did. I love the game's presentation and stages, I believe it was the first 3D fighter to feature multi-tiered arenas, 2 years before Dead or Alive 2. The overall feel of the game is so dark, mysterious and sinister. The bosses are all pretty creepy, even for the series standards. A really cool game that came out at the wrong time when it was already in Tekken 3 and Virtua Fighter 3's shadows.
Yes it’s sad the only way to play this is still on Hyper Neo Geo
I've always wanted to check out the Hyper Neo 64. Friend of mine has almost the whole collection, if they used conventional Jamma I'd ask to borrow it.
All the fighting games use JAMMA?
@@VideoGameEsoterica I heard they use a different type of edge that gives harnesses fits. Fatal Fury Wild Ambition was sick, and I'd love to get a copy of it.
All the fighting games will work off one setup
Neo Geo Hyper 64 Graphics still impressme. Very smooth with no Jaggies.
it def had a look and a vibe and I personally love it
The most recent shodown even has 64 models as DLC. I think for Genjuro, Shiki and Nakoruru.
I did not see that. How’d I miss that?
They didn't really talk about it. They're just kind of there.
I’ll have to look for them
The Hyper 64 has some seriously good titles despite it's small library. I wish the hardware would see some more love! Maybe someday we'll see a multicart...? I can dream!
Haha that is def a dream. But you never know
I've always liked the feel of Samurai Showdown games and it seems to move to 3d pretty well although I like the classic 2d look the best
It def transitioned well but yes the 2D games will always age better
Should you go out and buy it? Yeah!
will you be able to buy it?
Prob not because its a real hard game to find! LOL
Took me a long ass time to find it for my collection but I got it in the end!
My personal fave on the System though is Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition.
64 becomes harder and harder to find year after year but you want FF:WA? Take your pick!
@@VideoGameEsoterica I have the full set of fighters.
FF:WA was semi difficult to find but SS64 took me nearly 2 years to track down!
The 2nd SS64 seems to be pretty common to find though.
Yes the second game is way earlier to find. Racing games? Round Trip RV is kinda hard and Offbeat Racer is stupid rare. Beast Busters? Hardest of them all
@@VideoGameEsoterica I have never seen Beast Busters for sale over here.
If I had the chance I woukd defo grab it though!
I have seen ONE in the last two years sell
I like big polygons and I cannot lie...😅
Shame these Hyper Neo Geo titles never got ported back in the day. I guess snk were thinking about making their own console, but still could have been a big market for them
Yes by the time the hyper failed there was no real reason to port them sadly
This definitely could've been a PS1 port. A missed opportunity in my opinion.
The smart system would have been N64 as the Hyper and the N64 share the same CPU
What Serously you get hate just covering rare hardware? I just don't understand some people lol
haha some people hate the Hyper
@@VideoGameEsoterica welcome to the internet my friend haha lol 🤣 🤣 🤣
It is now Full in Mame this Game, or still not Finished?
You can play start to finish. Audio isnt finished but you can get the experience
There are only 7 videogames
on The HYPER NEOGEO arcade
Should have been way more but sadly seven is what we got
@@VideoGameEsoterica Way back in 1998 I liked that TEKKEN FIGHTING Style that SNK tried as a experiment
Tekken was always my least fav. It’s still great but I was playing way more Virtua Fighter and Dead or Alive
@@VideoGameEsoterica Greetings from México
not my favourite ss but i like it nonetheless
Thats fair. Def not for everyone
Noice!
A fun time for sure
Hyper Neo Geo 64 is the last frontier. I wonder why no one has touched it. We can’t let it get lost to history. We have to have a better way to play the games other than shitty MAME. I don’t think it has been updated in years. Someone get the hardware before it gets too scarce, so it can be implemented on MiSTer.
It’s being updated now. Already has been and more fixes are on the way. MAME dev has some of my footage to help (hence these new videos. I already had the boards out)
Also remember…even if the emulation isn’t perfect people spend a lot of time working on it and we should be happy they do :)
When it come out First in Japan, People don't like it, because it wasn't better than the 2D Games on the Neo Geo!
It's very the same as the Street Fighter EX, that Japanese don't like to see, Street Fighter or Samurai Showdown Work in 3D Space!
And what do they now??
Nobody use 2D Sprites anymore!
It was very above it's time or People accept 3D Games more?
What Funny, because Indie Dev. do very worse 2D Sprites even worse than Nes Times and have still Success!!!
Very strange in all...
When you ask me! 😒🤔
It was just so DIFFERENT fans disliked it out of the gate
@@VideoGameEsoterica 1 Step ahead is innovation, 2 steps ahead is a martyr. Too much change too fast and people will reject it out of sheer difference.
Please slow down and talk clearer I can't understand what you're saying.
No way speed is perfect. You can slow the playback speed to 0.75?
It’s just how I speak. 38 years and going
So you've got the same problem with fighter games v JRPG games eh?
Lol not sure what you mean? (Let’s not forget I always forget what I said in videos lol)
Was meaning the people around you who want to play JRPGs over Fighting Games.
Hahaha ahh now I get it 🤣
