  • The Hyper Neo Geo 64 was supposed to be the AES and MVS replcament! A technological marvel! Yet, the hardware failed miserabely when it was introduced in late 90's. Many #fightinggames fans were hoping the new system would mean new amazing games to revitalize the #FGC

    My country, and more specifically my hometown, was lucky enough to get one unit on the local arcade back in 2000-2001. Funnily, it had the Samsho games and Wild Ambition, the latter being, in a ysit of faith, the last game before said arcade shut down a few years later.
    While having fond memories with the games, let's face it: it sadly didn't live up to the hype. A shame the hardware choices with the arcade resulted in its demise and its potential wasted.
    Sad to see it fail.

    • @cabbusses
      @cabbusses Před 3 lety +1

      How would that have worked? Nakoruru's character appeal is grounded in sword combat and animal friends, and while those were big in 2D platformers, 3D game tech shifted the styles so sword combat had dedicated games and animal friends were difficult to implement even in DK64.
      Plus, Nakoruru had a visual novel spinoff. They were probably not going to try anything more ambitious or budget-heavy.

    I am a Neo Geo AES/MVS/CDZ collector who has been an SNK fan since the days of Guerilla War. Having said that, I have never even seen a Hyper Neo Geo 64 in my life. I remember EGM/GamePro covering the hardware before it launched. After doing quite a bit of research, I am finding some very peculiar takes on the hardware that do not make sense.
    The one that really gets me is when people say, "The hardware is weak." The Hyper Neo Geo 64 had the exact same processor as the N64 at a higher clockrate. It also had double the amount of RAM, which is also clocked higher than the N64. The carts are said to be so massive that they dwarf the AES/MVS ones. From what I see, it runs circles around the PSX, making it a solid performer for a 5th generation machine. The build is insane and not very practical for home application, like with the AES. The other thing one should consider with the Hyper Neo Geo 64 is...what it lacked in power could have been boosted considerably through its massive carts. There is no reason to think SNK could not slap a second or even third N64 processor inside a game that needs it. Don't forget, this is the company that sold carts at $200 to $250 a pop in 1990.

      This system would have been good in 95. for them to have pseudo 3d game it would have needed to be in 93-94 to have garnered influence. Consider if the dream cast was launched with the game cube and xbox in 2001. That's what happened to hyper neo geo. Nintendo would not give them an opportunity to put out the arcade version in 95 to build recognition and then release a home version in 97 as a mature audience system to the n64s youthful marketing target.

    Samurai Shodown 64 (the first one) is probably SNK's version of Super Streetfighter II (non turbo), the slow, completely unfun version that promptly got fixed in the next upgrade. I used to have a HNG64, and I can't figure out which was a bigger waste of potential between HNG64 and CPS3. Neither got to mature because of low sales, but both were very interesting custom architectures before arcade games just became PCs. But Sam Sho 64 is literally unplayable, I could not detect a single ounce of fun to be had in playing it. I still want to play Buriki One someday, is it emulateable?

    About Road's Edge: There was one at the Kingdome in Seattle before it got torn down, which is the only place I ever saw a HNG64 on location. It was quite fun gameplay wise and I thought the framerate and fluidity was really nice at the time. I think the comparison to Scud Race is unfair. There were ALWAYS top of the line very expensive driving games with cutting edge graphics in the arcades (almost always by Sega) and the much cheaper, less deluxe driving games that focused on gameplay and fun rather than graphics. Even sega made some of these cheaper games. So back in the day you would be WOWED by Scudrace and Daytona 2, but you would be more than happy to also play Cruis'n, Hydrothunder and Wangan titles that were never the best graphically when they came out. Road's edge wasn't trying to impress anyone graphically, it's from a long line of fun but not cutting edge arcade racing games. =)
