This is a very spiritual song, it is about walking on the road to death and to not be afraid. Its almost like singing to a friend who recently passed, comforting him and singing him on his way. They literally sing âWho will sing me into my death-sleep?â Norse culture has songs for everything, this is about singing someone over the bridge of Gjallar and into the realm of the goddess of death called Hel (not to be confused with the christian hell). Its a very emotional and beautiful song. edit: some spelling.
Well said. This song is an Anthem for all of us , it was ancient the moment it was sung.
âbeth roars pinned your commentâ shows up with a heart and dissappears again because I was in the middle of fixing a spelling error. Sorry about that, and thank you beth! :)
Thank you for this. I love this song and always wanted to know the meaning
Karin Heinkel The last sentences of the song; âI shall follow you over the bridge of Gjallar with my song.
You will be freed from the bonds that bind you!
You are free from the bonds that bound you!â
The words sung by Einar after the song are from the HavamĂĄl, a beautiful verse about how the good memory of someone never really dies.
Edit: thank you for noticing so I could correct it Ivan :)
@@hfliffnerekenroth5236 This is amazing! Thank you for the information. I have decided to look into the practices of the old Nordic culture. My family is from the southern part of Scandinavia. I want to learn and also be respectful of my ancestral's lifestyle.
Finally some Wardruna. Einar is also a former drummer for the black metal band Gorgoroth
Saw him and the enslaved guitarist back in February ish in Islington. Beautiful show, incredible singer and musician. Gf in tears (makes her homesick for denmark). Was funny seeing most of enslaved on stage. Funnier given id seen enslaved a few months before. Einar seemed like a genuinely decent fella which is always nice. Took time to explain bits a pieces before each song, say thanks and so on. Was cool that he clearly attached great importance to the audience understanding the historyic detail of what was referenced in each song.
matthew godding Awesome
I had no idea he was in Gorgoroth, and I call myself a fan!
Bob Fossil Gaahl also was apart of Wardruna
@@joenathan4628 Einar had the name Kvitrafn in Gorgototh(2000-2004)
Here are the lyrics, and the english translation:

So glad someone posted this! Thanks! :)
Not entirely correct there though.
@@Wardaddy4477 what's incorrect?
@@TrueSonOfWalhall Some of the transelations here. This is written in nynorsk and some of these words doesnt translate well into english.
When I walk on the path of death, should be: when I walk on the road to Hel. (Hel is the place everyone who didn't die in battle went after death.)
Early in the days end, should be: early, or in the end of the days. (Meaning, early or late in life.)
When you stand by the gate of death, should be: when you stand by the gate of Hel. Cause, death didn't always mean you went to Hel.
"It sounds like the norwegian landscape" on aurora's voice.. i like that analogy.. seems accurate to me
Einar has a powerful voice. He wrote some music for the TV series Vikings, has a solo career and performs A LOT. He is one of my favorite vocalist and seems like a nice guy.
Wardruna are AMAZING and you should listen to more of them when you are wanting a relaxing journey.
Aurora IS one of the best vocalist ever. Her vocal is ethereal. Her emotional connection to whatever she sings is very visible and I think that is what makes her stand out more than others.
Good video!
Hey! Check out my reaction to Einar here: czcams.com/video/uc8ceijaTz4/video.html
And he will also create the soundtrack of the new AC game đ€
Iâve fallen down a Nordic rabbit hole that started by looking for some relaxing Celtic music. Itâs been 2 weeks and I havenât listened to anything else and I have no clue what they are saying. That says ALOT about this traditional type of music itâs like itâs feeding my soul.
Amber C I think in some way the sound is embedded in our genes from being passed down through generations. Like instinct. We donât have to learn it. We just know
@@Raijin-RyuX24 i really think it has to be. all of my family are musicians, but somehow my musical interest and talent for sound went a different direction. I sang different than everyone else, made my own instruments by imagination - it was my Gramma that noticed and said i was a throwback, even in my looks. it is only now, that i am finding singers and musicians that have been doing what i was doing (and i was being called the weirdo) - just happened that i wasn't in "my country"
At this point i think Beth is reacting to my playlist
One of the most prominent virtues of Wardruna, is it's basically shamanic. There is such a chant, or cadence, although melodic, that it is very meditative. Putting the listener in a trance like state. Thank you for this reaction! Amazing!
when she sings i can imagine i see through the eyes of a raven that flies through the mountains above fjords. Also the voice matching great. her voice is like the wide of the landscape their peacfullnes and the silentnes. While his voice describes the roughness of the culture and the life in such harsh but wonderful and mystic lands.
I went from France to London just to see of their performance, that's one of my favourite band... i was crying during the show, i couldn't hold my emotions because it was way too beautiful ... i will definitly see them again soon
I get goosebumps every time I listen to this.
Awesome that you've done a reaction.

This reaction made me a big surprise! I love Wardruna so much and this song makes me have goosebumps every single time I hear it.. thank you Beth â€ïž
Finally!!! Wardruna is one of my favorite bands and it was great seeing you react to them. perhaps you would react to "Wardruna - Rotlaust tre fell (Live in Moscow)". Or the "FMF 2015: International TV Series Gala: Vikings suite, Trevor Morris" where Einar preformed. (as well as the amazing cellist Tina Guo)

i have said it since i found this song. this is for at my burial. gives me chills from front to back. i love wardruna.
Please react to Einar Selvik's "Voluspa"! Would love to know what exactly he is doing.

Ugh I love voluspa!!
SO much love for Wardruna! And this song is my ultimate favorite for a lot of reasons. Additionally, when my daughter was between 6m and 1y old (she's 2.5 now), we would help her sleep by playing this song and walking in time with the main beat in a dark room. Worked *every* time. She really loves drums. Thanks for this react! So awesome! :)
So you are raising a future viking lol
I am pretty sure she will have a beard when she will be 10
So happy you finally reviewed this one. Wardruna makes some of the most compelling music Iâve ever heard.
Wardruna is my all time favorite band. I live in the US, traveled to Toronto 2018 to see them. I will see them again this October at the Red Rocks Amphitheater that is outdoors. There music, goes deep, beyond the ears to the very being of who you are. I cannot stop listening to them. So glad you appreciate this music.
This performance is filmed at Bergenhus Fortress in Bergen, Norway. A great location for this kind of music since the fortress was build in the early 1200's.
Was there. Was great. đ
Wonderful.....thank you! I listening to Wardruna for 2 years now, and they are never boring!
I'm so glad you reacted to this, one of my favorite performances with Aurora. She's truly incredible.
Pleasantly surprised to finally see Wardruna be given a spot :)
Amazing! He performed this song with EivĂžr PĂĄlsdĂłttir as well
It Happened Quiet by Aurora! She has two live performances I know of and they're both amazing!
UPVOTE ME PLEASE, I've been asking for this for months lol.
The one at Nidarosdomen!
man, this music just stirs something in the soul. it's so beautiful, i can't listen without getting chills.

Great video! I love the technical breakdown, of this deeply moving and spiritual song. I hope you do more like this! Subscribed!
Love the review Beth, explained very well and it brings me into the "zone",so to speak. Beautiful expression when you mentioned "A Hug Of Sound"..It's a magical feeling when this is present at a live performance. Keep up the good work !
I have been waiting for this so badly!
This is one of those songs where I have no idea what they are saying but I still love it, first time I heard it I had goosebumps.
đ
I was attending this very concert when they performed this version of Helvegen...And I can tell you it was such an amazing experience! :D I can recommend a cover version of this song as well, from Kalandra! It is
pretty interesting and I instantly fell in love with it!
Limitedtimestruggle I second that recommendation! In fact I heard the Kalandra cover first and it sent me on the journey to discover this.
Anita Ferguson That is just awesome :D Happy you like it!
MORE AURORAAAAA đ„°đ
this never falls to give me massive tingles from head to toe, it awakens something ancestral in my soul
Thank you for reviewing this in detail. Respect and good wishes.
I love Wardruna, and Aurora as well, I think togheter they sound amazing! greetings from Argentina, your videos are very enjoyableâ€
I am back five years to the anniversary of when you reacted to this. I appreciate it more now after watching another reactor react to today. I think I just wasn't ready last year. I wanted to hear more of Aurora and I was hearing more of the guy instead. Ha ha. Now I really appreciate his voice. There's something very soothing about it.
To me, this song is like something I've always known, I feel like listening to a past life music, it moves me so much! Thanks for your reaction!
Great video - thanks for all your hard work
Seeing wardruna live was probably the best experience I've had with live music. In all honesty it felt less like a festival when I saw them more like a spiritual experience.
As a swedish viking and fully belives in asatru. I saw wardruna 2016 in gothenburg! and i can just say that the gods we're present and i was in tears
I really like this type of musical genre, in particular I move to another time and experience viquinga.I love it !!!!
"It sounds like the Norwegian landscape."
Love this.
Thank you Beth. Your reaction makes many of us proud. This song is an Anthem for those of us into the old ways, it was ancient the moment it was sung. Indeed a true bardic masterpiece. Thank you again.
Yay I was waiting for this one))
Finally! Iâm so glad I just spotted youâve reacted to this, I recommended it when I saw you react to Heilung Live
This song is SO amazing. I canât listen to rain without humming it. It IS rain. And auroraâs voice, god. Thank you for making these videos about it, the way you explain things is really cool :)
Iâve seen Wardruna in the UK 3 times now. Best live band Iâve ever seen, hands down.
Awesome that you reacted to this đ This was from Wardruna concert in their (and Aurora) hometown, Bergen. My daughter and I was on this concert, and we had goosebumps all the time. This song was the last one, and it is about singing for someone who have died. Taking farewell.
the horn is a late iron age lure, originally a bronze age instrument that was used in Scandinavia up until the mid to late medieval age
Never clicked on a video so fast! Love you and Wardruna
It is a delight to listen to someone so informative.
I love this song. Had not heard this rendition. I like living in a time where I can experience amazing bands with such ease.
Makes me smile at the way this music reaches you!
Its the fact that this music takes you back to an ancient place that you feel deep down inside of your soul. Im so happy you've found them. I have tickets to see them in October I can't wait
You'll have to go to the scene in Vikings that this song was played during, they were getting ready to find Athelstan. Such a haunting song.
That is simply beautiful.
This whole song... there are no words to describe the haunting beauty of what they created.
I loved Helvegen before Aurora joined them, but her voice really harmonises, it's so beautiful.
Loved your reaction =)
Oh Iâm so happy you know about them now!! I love them.
This react got you a new sub! I love your insights!
More Wardruna please!
Hypnotic and all-encompassing!! ...and fun trivia on accent origins!
Great video about one of my favorite songs and styles of music!
I'am so pleased that our campaign to get this song played succeed! đ
Thank you Beth! đđ
You should call your site, Beth Overreacts. There is SOOO much going through your head so fast you struggle to get it out fast enough. Thanks, I really enjoy you.
Love the unique sound of this sort of music, and this group in particular. Itâs raw, organic, archaic, though not quite primal, and very much of the earth while maintaining this slight flavour of a world beyond. Itâs what I listen to when I run, workout, or even when I wish to sleep. @BethRoars, she, unlike other reviewers, really digs into the meat and potatoes of the music, not just the vocals, which makes for a much more thoroughly analytical examination than most. I donât know very much about singing being a humble bagpiper that sings only in the shower or when having consumed copious amounts of alcohol in pubs but I do know analysis and I love that element of the channel. Wonderful work from both the artists and the reviewer.
rarely i like vocal coach reactions, cause all they do they pause music and talk boring stuff no one cares, but you enjoy this, few comments and just embrace music... loved it
Yes i was just going to say that and she really informs us rather than doing weird faces like all of the vocal coaches on CZcams.
The rythm(asymetrical 3-bar) come from a dancing tratition called pols in Norway. As a fot note, the 3-bar showed up in scandinavia during the end of the medival peroid. People likely had just as mush fun with 2-bar before.
Iâm going to be travelling to Finland to see Wardruna play at Savonlinna castle, this will be the second time Iâve seen them. Iâm so excited
II played this for my adult daughter and she did not really get it. I asked her to listen again but imagine lying in bed and the down beat of the drum is her heartbeat while the voices are coming through an open window. When the drum stopped, she gasped and then smiled, she got it.
The theory about accents being related to the weather was very cool, subscribed!
I adore the original video. The two most interesting things I learned while watching this are 1. how the harmonies are being sung and, 2. how each instrument, including the voices, is finding its own layer. Now I know part of the reason I find the performance so piercing and moving to experience. Thank you!
What a time to be alive of Norse bands popping up left and right and existing bands finally getting the attention they deserve. Makes me really happy because I canât get enough of it
I love this song!!
I was there :) the consert was Awesome... the filming does not give it the respect it deserves... i was almost in tears :)
If you ever have a chance to hear them live it's absolutely amazing and dare I say better than recordings!
Thank you for your reaction on this breathtaking song! You underlined some things about the feel you get from some specific vocals: very interesting and revealing!
This makes me so happy!
I think this sounds so bittersweet. There is so much emotion. People have mentioned that the song evokes spiritual feelings. I think it sounds like the people are mourning.
Another MORE AURORA comment!!! You said you also like her, so why not react to her even more? :)
I was about to suggest this hahahaha

Great video!
Could you please react some RosalĂa? Anything from her experimental (and conceptual) album "El Mal Querer" (Malamente, Bagdad, Di Mi Nombre...), or her more traditional take to Flamenco classics (Aunque Es de Noche is amazing). I would love to see your reaction to one of the few mainstream artists I follow, especially this Spanish woman we're so proud of.
I realy Love this reaction!!!! More Aurora Please!!!!
I never listened to this type of music ,then my world turned upside down 19month ago when i lost my beautifull little girl 12yrs old ,since then this music from wardruna gives me a way to get lost in my mind .
Havent watched one of your videos in a while but when this one popped up and it said Aurora and Wardruna I nearly broke my keyboard clicking on it. I am an Aurora freak and I actually discovered her from her first video singing with this band at the Traena Music Festival so this comes full circle for me. Shes kind of moved beyond this dark Nordic folky stuff with her latest albums but Im a sucker for her no matter where she goes artistically. And Wardruna is excellent as well. I would highly suggest Daichin Tana and her band HAYA if you like this.
By the way, this is a pretty rare experience as Aurora rarely sings in her native language. She says she finds it too personal and informal.
You nailed this thanks!
Very educational, thank you! This music take me to another time.
I'm not familiar with the band but I love Aurora !! She sings with such emotion.
Listen to Wardruna Helvegen when they playing it by their self, it's awesome!
They have it on Spotify đ
