    that "tin" blob, could have a little silver in it. with that high of a potential in your cell, it could have complexed the Ag as AgCl2 and deposited it on the stainless cathode. stainless is a poor cathode candidate for HCl electrolytes as well, as you surely saw by its corrosion. i would try it again with lower voltage (MUCH lower voltage) and a graphite cathode. you dont want hydrogen bubbling off the cathode

    • @chorosso5259
      @chorosso5259 Před 6 lety +3

      actually, a lot of people got their money from ads (im saying it in past tense because of the adpocolypse) and disabling ad block does give them more money through ads (although supposedly now you have to watch through the ad? im not too sure on that part) i got a lot of this information from two videos (and some claims by other youtubers)
      1.) (before adpocolypse) alan becker's video on how youtubers make money
      2.) (after adpocolypse) CGP grey's video on how ads work and such

    • @johnpossum556
      @johnpossum556 Před 6 lety +5

      Sadly there is a whopping load of BS about how Yters make their money. Especially here on YT but some by other websites. It seems here on YT any one can say just about anything about any one and as long as it's not a copyright violation or hate speech it will remain. The truth is they make about $2 per 1000 views of their vids. But they generally make much more on their patreon accounts.
      If I were Cody I would set up affiliate accounts with places like Amazon and any other I could. This way it doesn't cost any one anything more but it supports them if you chose to. I've supported a few YTers this way... like buying wire strippers from their store. I like this option because every one wins.
      Plus most of us make purchases nearly every day if not weekly. (Amazon's stock just hit its 52 week high not long ago meanwhile Walmart's just dropped. )
      I just realized Cody should get a sponsor. Maybe a chemical company or a geology company or something. Apparently that is where the real money is but it is easy to sell out, too. He should have a list of his own rules before approaching them.

    • @chorosso5259
      @chorosso5259 Před 6 lety +4

      but $2 per 1000 views is still a lot (and a bit too much really, i think you might not be taking into consideration how yt splits the revenue with its creators) 1000000 is $2000. and i know a minority of channels get 1000000 views per video, but for the channels that are big enough, its a well paying job

    • @chorosso5259
      @chorosso5259 Před 6 lety +8

    On the topic of recovering metals, you could grow some copper crystals.
    There are very few sources on youtube for growing copper but it appears the lower your curent the more crystal-like the crystal will be.
    (if you grow it really slowly you get pure copper in a real crystal structure)
    I would do it myself but I haven't got any rooms in which I could keep a jar of acid for the required time :/

    Hang on, how are you so sure that the leftover curly bits of solder don't contain a significant amount of silver?
    Also, if you want high silver recovery rates, get all the offcuts from commercial refrigeration guys that are too short for them to solder with. Some of them are up to 50% silver. Also contains phosphorus - thus the name "SilPhos".

    • @johnpossum556
      @johnpossum556 Před 6 lety +10

      an alloy is a homogenous mixture meaning the curls would have the same 1-5% silver the rest of the SS had.

      You dont throw away stubs of silver solder, when you can just stick em together again. Also silfos (tm), doesnt actually contain silver for reasons i cant comprehend either.

      Not true, the harmful gasses released by solder is from the flux not the lead, and lead free solder actually needs more flux to properly wet the metal, therefore the leaded solder is better for the lungs. The reason for the push away from leaded solder was electronics going into landfills polluting the environment with excess lead in the soil

      At that voltage ALL of the metals in the solder will readily electrolyze(is that a word?) and deposit on the electrode. The only effective difference will be the speed at which they do it. Much of the missing silver is either in the tin, or as is suspected the manufacturer skimped on it to begin with. I suspect it is in the tin.

      Thomas Stewart distilled water could still have oxygen in it, gasses dissolve in water readily. But oxidation state actually means how many electrons the copper has lost, oxidation confusingly doesn't necessarily involve oxygen.

    • @Ant100mc
      @Ant100mc Před 6 lety +3

      its actually a regional thing, most americans would say sodder, others would say solder, it just depends on where you live, and who pronounces it like that

    • @Mostlyharmless1985
      @Mostlyharmless1985 Před 6 lety +8

      because there isn't an e at the end of solder to make the o sound long. The position of the tongue when pronouncing "ld" means the ah of the o blends to make it sound like sod.
      Also, that's the correct pronounciation of solder.

    • @willh1234
      @willh1234 Před 6 lety +11

      So English gets it from French (soudur/soudure), and in French there is no "L." So originally in English, it was pronounced without the L. A couple hundred years ago, when spelling was getting formalized more and more, it was decided to add an L, to reflect how the original word was spelled in Latin (solidus/solidare).
      It was still pronounced "Saw - dur" for a long time, but eventually in England, people accidentally started pronouncing the word how it was spelled, rather than how it was supposed to be pronounced. This didn't happen in America for whatever reason.
