How often does a brass band soloist stand on stage and seem to be told not to enjoy themselves?! This guys loving it! even has time to turn round and smiles at the bones to say this is my solo now!!!!
Saw him yesterday at the famous KKL in Lucerne during the World Band Festival. So young still and so relaxed. So much joy. He and the whole band were simply amazing. Standing ovations that almost would not end. Great!
He stopped by my high school's symphonic band while he was stateside to do a casual performance and talk about his experiences. Incredible musician and equally as comedic.
Bit of an enigma is Paul and I can't quite decide. Is he just a show off, full of his own self confidence, or a really talented musician who gives it 100% and really loves what he does, either way, he has a real talent and a flair for the soprano cornet. It's just that every video I've seen him in, he comes across as as mad as a box of frogs..!
i remember playing sop for st helens youth and paul playing playing my part as well as solo cornet part. Great guy also on tour with us! loves his music
@drakeeandy Thanks for your reply. I'm a big fan of BDB and worried about the wholesale changes in personnel that have occurred in the ranks of BDB recently. Is there anything you can tell me about this?
pilchard96 - its not that long ago when Paul moved from the front row to the sop chair and was "supported" by nthe Belgian player Bert van Thienen. It seemed that Paul was not going to make it. Maybe it was a case of too little confidence to too much. Nick Childs always knew what he was doing but Paul did get off to a slow start.
Former St Helens Youth Brass Band member here. Paul was amazing then, and he's amazing now! And he's an ace teacher, too! :)

It's called confidence. He definitely has earned it though. Superb playing.
my music teacher at school
Awesome playing Paul. You are a legend in your own right. As a sop player myself if I could even play half as good as you I'd be happy.
Excellent Sop playing by Chucke`s
@turnitback but the upside to that is they show what is possible. I have never seen them live but really do want to.
outstanding and sheer mastery. (how could 7 ignoramuses downthumb something almost spiritual)
Ridiculously clever this guy.
hey Paul! you're famous man! I shall feature you in that Miles track! Featuring Paul Duffy and Ray Russell

I don't know how he manages to play with half the band and audience clapping on 1 & 3 ! c'mon backbeat!
Saw them today. thought he was beautiful. Didn't stare at all...
Wow!...nope, got nothing else to say.😁
soprano cornet?
Yep
Does this guy like himself or what?
hahahaaaa , when you can play and improvise like that , then yes, you can love yourself...................soooooooooo jealous.
Slightly out of jazz style
