    Excellent advice! Did the Vigo to Porto train ride. Scenic & arrived in only a few hours. Spent two days in Porto then took the fast CP train to Lisbon. Good train & inexpensive. Flew from Lisbon to Seville on Ryan Air. Smooth trip & inexpensive also. Tony’s advice is clear & very helpful. Thank Tony!!!!!

    Nice run-through. You can cut down long bus trips by including Extremadura to a trip, seeing Cáceres‎ and Mérida, which are quite worth while destinations. Cáceres‎ is a wonderful medieval hill town and Mérida is like mini Rome, full of ancient sights. Once you're done with Mérida, you can take a bus to the Portuguese town of Evora, which offers quite a lot as well. After that you have tons of options to hop over to Lisboa.

    Hola Tony and Cecilia, we just returned from Madrid and followed your recommendations for hotel (Amor de Dios was great!), tapas tour (couldn’t squeeze in El Rey Anciano though😢), and your recommended museums (we added local tour guide for Prado/Reina Sofia/Palacio Real which we highly recommend). Your suggestions were all awesome and we thank you!!

    Best border crossing from Portugal to Spain must be the ferry from Caminha to A Pasaxe across the river Minho - just hope it doesn't get stuck on a mudbank!

    Very informative video! Thank you Tony! We are planning a bus trip from Seville to Lisbon in April. On some travel forums on the internet, there are reports of luggage theft when stored under the bus storage compartment. If that is true, how often is this a problem and is it specific to a bus company?

    • @ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal

      Hi Patri, we always play it safe and, with a few local exceptions, go for the big names: Avis, Budget, Centauro, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt.

  • @lisaprofitt262
    @lisaprofitt262 Před měsícem

    Tony, please recommend a rental car company that allows their rentals to go from Spain to Portugal? Enterprise and Hertz do not. Perhaps it’s because we will be driving with a ‘special permit’ applied for through CAA in Canada, on our Canadian drivers licences? ✌☀🇨🇦 I was also told we couldn’t drive from Bilbao to Porto and turn our rental in there. Ideally, we’d like to be flying to Lyon from Porto. (Then Hamburg from Lyon.)

    • @ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal
      @ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal  Před měsícem

      Hi, very few car rental companies will allow that, and the price you will have to pay will be absurd (basically, you need to pay for the cost of sending the car back to the original point from one country to another). That's why it's hard to find a company that does it. We wouldn't have one to recommend.

      That’s a shame, I travelled on that in 2019. Had a really good nights Travel. Met a crowd of American students in the bar and myself and my wife talked to them for several hours together with other passengers from Belgium and other countries. A great way to meet people before you go to bed. And the food, although basic was good. Other countries are bringing back their sleeper trains. Let’s hope Spain and Portugal follow this trend.

    Tony can you recommend a car rental company? We want to pick-up a car in Granada and eventually drop it off in Lisbon. All the rental companies I have looked at all want to charge a return fee back to Granada. I hope you can help.

    • @ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal

      Hi, we usually check at Booking www.booking.com/cars/index.html?aid=359492 and go for the big players (Avis, Budget, Centauro, Europcar, Hertz or Sixt). All companies will charge you as they have to repatriate the car from another country.

    01:18 This is actually not true. A high speed line from Évora to Elvas is being built right now and will start operating in the begining of 2025, so you could say there will be high spped conexions between Portugal and Spain in the near future, maybe an Alfa Pendular or Alvia conexion between Lisbon and Badajoz (who knows)...

    • @ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal
      @ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal  Před 4 měsíci

      At the time stamp you mention we state: "if you watch our video on the size of the high-speed network in Spain, you will realise that the current network only comes a little bit closer to Portugal in the north of the country". We stand by that statement, which reflects the current situation of the high-speed network in Spain. There is absolutely no budget or timeframe for a high-speed line to the Portuguese border you mention in the short or mid term. Developments to the other side of the border, interesting as they might be, are completely irrelevant to the point you are criticizing.
      Chances are there will be a high-speed train link between Porto and Galicia before the end of the decade. The chances of that happening between Madrid and Lisbon are next to ZERO.

    • @diogorodrigues747
      @diogorodrigues747 Před 4 měsíci

      @@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal I'll say it again: the high speed rail between Évora and Elvas is well under construction and will open in the next year, and I can prove this because I recently went to see the construction of that line and some parts of it are already near finishing. Also it's almost certain that, after being open, it will be used as a passenger train connexion - even Renfe has stated some weeks ago that is interested in a connexion between Évora and Madrid in 2025/26.
      If you have any doubts about what I'm saying, just Google it. Period.
