The more I think about it, its clear that Cromwell was England's Napoleon, (France, as always, was behind the curve), even down to the way the Protectorate set up... a rising military general.
The reason why Cromwell rejected the Crown was the same as the main reason why the rump parliament offered it to him... because The powers of a King were known and limited, (In England, this is true, but not in France).
England had always had a limited Monarchy, where as France embraced despotism... England rejected it.
Ever since 927, England has at her core, been a Commonwealth... that is to say...
England was established for the purpose of protecting the common well-being of Englishmen, from that of foreign powers.
"A commonwealth is a traditional English term for a political community founded for the common good"...
Theis is what England is... not a republic, like that of early Rome... not a pure monarchy, like that of what became of France... but instead, Sir John Fortescue, says it best with... "dominium politicum et regale"...
as opposed to "dominium regale", which was what France was before 1789.
Roughly translated, it means "limited monarchy" or "a Royal Commonwealth"... which is what England is...
"a Monarchy founded for the common good of Englishmen"...
which as it happens, is by far better than being genocided by the Danes.
God Bless Æthelstan... King of all the English... Founder of a United Ængla-land... a Kingdom of and for, the English...
    The KINGDOM of ENGLAND .927-
Though she may be but a subkingdom of the bigger U.K... she still exists, and one day her sovereignty well be restored.
Long live the KINGDOM of ENGLAND .927-, long live the King and God Save the English!
