This feels so relevant with the news of Kentaro Miura's passing from a health issue thats extremely tied to stress. The man gave us Berserk, a work of art and incredible emotion, and killed himself doing it. Or rather, the horrific conditions and pressures of the industry did. I would have gladly never had Berserk, or HxH, or any of these works if it meant that the creators wouldnt have their health destroyed. It isnt worth it.

So I think I connected to the first half of this video in a way I haven't with anything in a while. Lemme explain.
I'm a severe hypochondriac, which is to say that I suffer from health anxiety. In most media this is usually portrayed as a fairly comedic character trait, "haha Karl thinks he's sick when he isn't," but in reality it's anything but. Imagine waking up each day being in perfect health and yet being convinced to such an extent that feel that it is indisputable that you have a terminal illness and have anywhere between a few weeks to a few months before you are going to die, and that there is nothing you can do about it. It's often hard for me to get people to take my condition seriously, and it takes a while before people are able to understand just how debilitating, deeply embarrassing, and utterly terrifying it is. When I go through an episode, the duration of which may last anywhere from a few days to over a year, my inevitable death becomes literally the only thing I can consistently think of. It's always at the forefront of my mind, ever present, day and night, at work, at school, or at home. "I'm going to die. Soon." Even when I know logically that I am not dying yet, that I have a diagnosed mental condition that I am paying a significant amount of my limited money to treat, it's never something I can dismiss entirely.
And really, even if I were to beat my condition and dismiss my compulsive thoughts and kick my hypochondria to the curb, it wouldn't change anything. I might live for a week, a month, a year, century, for a millennia, and yet I am still going to die one day. It's something I am going to have to deal with in time.
And I feel like the first half of this video really touched on that with me, because really how the fuck do you live with that? Death terrifies me in a way that nothing else does and I have never had an honest, intimate discussion about it with anyone, and I've never fully had it under control. When I go through an episode of my condition it normally just disables me. I usually can't go to work, I can't play games or read books or watches movies or shows. I usually just lie down and think, in terror, of the inevitability of my death and the horror and uncertainty I feel in regards to what comes after, or if anything at all even comes after. There are few things I would love more than anything else than to have a relief from this ever present, lingering terror that I have had to live with for what has felt like entire years of my life, but I have made some progress, half-steps though they might be. I've had to accept that life is something I need to live in the present, that I can't become so stuck in the unknown of the future that I have no control over. That I have actually existed, that I am real, a conscious entity in this utterly absurd and seemingly meaningless universe, and that though I will one day no longer exist, that I have existed, that at the moment, I do exist, and that no disease or sickness or completely unpredictable end will be able to take that from me. I live in the now, not the then, and not the later, and I can't keep living with the fear of oblivion hanging over me.
To a certain extent I know that I'm being idealistic in this regard. That these may just be comfort words I use to make myself less terrified of death and dying, but it doesn't matter. It's taken a lot of therapy for me to be as functional as I am these days, and I'm still not that functional. I still have days where my nihilistic depression takes over and leaves me bedridden, where I call in sick to work or to friendly obligations because I just can't manage to overcome my condition that day. But I always try to improve it. I try to better myself, and to not let my condition beat me. Nothing I can do will matter in the future, and long after I am gone anything I have accomplished will have faded to the cosmic entropy. That's not nihilism so much as it's just fact. I cannot make a lasting mark. I will leave behind no evidence that I ever existed. But in the moment, I do exist, and nothing can take that from me. I would love to live forever, or at least for a time so long that I cannot comprehend it, but barring that, I want to live as best as I can. I want to be the best version of me that I can be, or at least the version of me that I can be most comfortable with. That's not too much to ask for, I hope.
I recognize that this is probably not the main thing you wanted to be taken away from this video and that everything I just said has basically nothing to do with Cyberpunk's simultaneous critique of corporate capitalist culture in spite of the fact that it was actively made in the very conditions that it so openly seems to critique. Even so, this is the part of the video that hit me most. It was almost shocking just how hard your introduction applied to the specific events of my life that I am dealing with at this very moment. I'm going through a really rough time in my life right now and the first half of the video, and your take and presentation on it, struck me to the core in a way that I haven't been in a very long time, it almost felt disarming. I don't get emotional that often, and I've gotten used to feeling a resounding hollowness about most things, but I almost cried during parts of this video, a good sort of crying I mean, and I feel like I need to take the time to acknowledge my gratitude about that.
Thanks for the video Ruby. I think I needed to see something like this.
It's nice to know that you aren't the only one fighting these thoughts, from time to time.

Missed this comment in the fray, but thank you for posting it. It was definitely one of the things I wanted to be taken away cause it was one of my big takeaways from the game itself, which is why part of that lingering realization about the game's hypocrisy upset me so much. Not going to lie though, that section was honestly kind of scary for me to put together just cause the feelings I talk about there feel so raw and personal to me that in a way that I can't help but be kind of embarrassed by to such an extent that I've felt kind of ambivalent on this video since it was posted, but reading this earnestly help me feel more comfortable with and proud of it. Thanks for watching ^^

Glovo has forced crunch on their "independent contractors", also known as "desperate people who need every penny that they can earn", and has disregarded every single labor law in my country.

I saw something a while back that kind of fucked me up but this is like the core of cyber punk. Cyberpunk was always anticorporate it was never about losing your soul or your sense of self to prosthetics or cybernetics or anything like that, it was about making sure you don’t become reliant and slaves to the corporations that Own and create the cybernetics. Cyberpunk was always anti-corporate, but when it became somewhat main stream they had to dumb it down because that was too much for main stream capitalism.

ironically when I played this quest I used corpo dialogue to initially bargain with Forrest, before changing my mind and killing him (because for real, he deserves it), but then all later dialogue reacted as if I’d spared him, to the point where I got an opportunity to kill him again later, and I was honestly just left wondering whether what happened was a bug or CDPR literally just did not think it was possible for someone to change their mind after making a decision

The fact a channel like yours can exist is unbelievable to me. Your analysis of things have impacted me more than the thing you analyse and each video I start somewhat interested and hooked by the great editing techniques and end deeply depressed at how pointless everything is and how critical thought is a mind numbing activity that means nothing to the wider world and just leaves me wanting to kill myself and leaves me reeling from there is no point in life nothing will change. I want to die. Great stuff love the content

This section caught me so off guard in a game I otherwise despised. I grew to think all of the things you've been saying here so much that I ended up not being able to complete it and donated my copy to a friend so that he wouldn't give cdpr any more money. This game did actually accidentally ended up being a radicalizing experience for me

I absolutely adore this game. I think a lot of it is for some of the reasons you stated. It is a corporate mess parading itself with all its flaws on display that constantly brushes up with greatness. The ideas here are interesting yet come off as oddly hollow with even the slightest knowledge on how the game came to be. For me this game is a lot like Fallout New Vegas. A legitimate mess that is nearly unplayable on release and without mods, yet presents enough in it to offer lots.
There's too much here for this game to be a completely reprehensible. There's soul in it that screams to be let loose yet is held in.
Excellent video. I'm looking forward to more.

      @metronicmagician1816 Před 3 měsíci

Speaking with 2 extra years down the line from when this whole video was made it’s really interesting seeing that soul in this game grow and heal. Even if we cut out modding which has been a huge aspect of this game’s post launch existence the game has been worked on, recrafted, and been give the chance to fix itself. Hell we’ve even gotten an entire rework of the game along with a massive expansion on content with the DLC. It actually feels like the devs were given the ability to make the game they wanted. Shame that only happened after it came out well too early for its own good, and spoiled a lot of player’s pallet for the game. Still the fact this game was given the chance to grow and fix itself is sadly incredibly rare in the industry. Normally if the game flops hard on launch it doesn’t get the time to fix itself. Really only 3 games I know of have done this. Fallout 76, No Man’s Sky, and Cyberpunk 2077.
That all said it’s nice seeing a game that has this much soul, even when bogged down by the horrendous launch and awful crunch culture, actually get to fully shine.

I’ve been trying other games to fill the void but honestly nothing could fill in the hole the story left in me. I’m loving persona 5 it’s a blast and it’s dripping with style but cyberpunk’s story just was a punch in the gut and honestly I’ll never forget it.

I was watching your pathological videos, and had to doodle random things out, in a way I haven't done in a looong time. In this one, at 15:12 I had to pause and write on a new layer on the doodle page about the internet being an archive that in the future people can look through like random pages of books. u know wuts super weird is i saw the Nezha: Reborn movie on netflix and imo that movie genuinely has a better cyberpunk story to me than cyberpunk 2077
the most frustrating thing to me was that with all the lore around cyberpunk 2077, barely any of it mattered as most of it was just used as window dressing, after everything Night City throws at u, after seeing the living conditions of the lower class in Night City, after literally being lectured on how predatory arasaka is by Johnny Silverhand himself and seeing it time and time and time again in side missions where the one pulling the strings is either Arasaka, Militech or one of the gangs being paid off by another major corp, at the end of all that, V's dream is still to be the fucking ash ketchoom of Night City and im like, "V, you have 6 MONTHS LEFT. YOU. CANNOT. WIN. THERE IS NO WINNING AND THERE IS NO POINT TO WINNING. (i mean seriously tho? the prize for being number 1 is u get a drink named after u at a bar and you have half an idea how many people want to stab u in the back...or the front, yay what a fun life amiright? all your new friends only like u for ur capabilities and material possessions and not your personality) YOU WOULD BE UTILIZING YOUR TIME BETTER IF YOU ORGANIZED THE PEOPLE TO RISE UP IN SOLIDARITY! WAKE THE FUCK UP SAMUARI, YOU GOT A CITY TO UNITE!!"
