Magneto blocking Charles' powers by putting his helmet on Charles' head was a brilliant move! Magneto wasn't just protecting himself, he was also cutting off telepathic communication between Xavier and the X-Men.
I know it's a cliffhanger, but the I feel like the last scene went to credits too abruptly. I think it needed another 10-20 seconds to breathe before cutting.
“Alright, we’re establishing a mutant homeland. Again. Any questions?” “What about mutants with non mutant family members?” “What happens when people start having kids and some of them are born without an X-gene?” “Are you setting up a foster care system for mutant children?” “What’s the school curriculum like?”

I feel like Charles might have been able to reason with Magneto if instead of talking about understanding and a better way and all that, he just pointed out the logical flaws in his plans. Sure Magnus, go ahead and destroy the Earth and we will all move to an asteroid. What happens when you run out of food and other resources?
"You see this Magnus?"
"That's a Chipmunk Charles."
"Yes his name is Chipy. Now what have Chipmunks like Chipy ever done to mutants Magnus?"
"Nothing Charles. He's a Chipmunk."
"Exactly! And he's going to die a horrible death of cancer from the solar winds because you shut down the Earth's magnetic field. Like 99.999% of mutants who aren't fitting on your little asteroid."

X-men 97 took a good series and actually made it great! Which is a rarity nowadays. The camera directions, the music during action scenes, the emotional depth, relationships (Storm & Jean), and the story in general are all better than the previous series.
Wolverine actually uses his claws on people. Wolverine unleashed!

@@cristianadpr8779 It's just this question, if you are splitting into teams, why do you put Wolverine on the team fighting Magneto? Best case scenario he spends the whole fight stuck to a wall.
@brettwood1351 in the comic Xavier explains why he takes every member of the team that hoes up there. If I remember correctly I think Wolverine was selected because it was a stealth mission; he's literally a government trained agent/assassin.
@@brettwood1351 it's the same reason that they sent the child groomed by Sinister to fight him. It's because if they did what was 100% logical, the show would break down.
There is also the ever-present threat that Wolverine and Magneto have a gentleman's agreement when they fight. Magneto promises not to rip out the metal in his skin and Wolvie promises not to make Erik into Swiss Cheese by evading him. HOWEVER, there was a breach in the terms and now there's war!

In the classic series, Master Mould stated that "Mutants ARE human."
I feel like this show has forgotten that.
My guess is we come back around to it.
I truly don't even think Magneto's plan to let the Earth die is even something he would want if he wasn't so overcome with grief and rage over Genosha and Bastion. Destroying the Earth would kill humans and mutants. He cannot realistically find and save every mutant on the planet in less than 12 hours and I doubt he even has enough resources to sustain a huge population on Asteroid M. He hasn't even thought of his own children in this move. He would kill billions, including mutants. I think if he won and everyone on earth really died, Magneto would eventually regret it. I just cannot see this version of Magneto ever truly being fine with killing the rest of his race while he only chose maybe a hundreds to survive, especially if his own children were killed as a result of his actions.
Like I keep saying, what did the plants and animals do to mutants Magneto?
Magneto isn't thinking straight or thinking at all honestly. And I can't blame him after everything he's been through.

"Shut up" is gonna go as one of the best moments in any X-Men story ever.

Total underestimation of the death toll, for sure. Airplanes alone would have the numbers in the 100,000s, which would already most likely be more than Genosha. (And that’s if they don’t crash into anything!)
I hope they do return to the lesson of “Mutants are Human.” Whatever ‘other’ that is for you, it’s the core message of the X-Men, to me. And it’s usually the case that the more specific a narrative gets, the more universal it becomes. You can tell any story you want with that viewpoint.
900,000 is still thousands technically...
Rogue was in her original first costume (with Remy's signature trench coat before she draped it on Charles, like a coat rack). Her Age of Apocalypse later suit has two white stipes down her chest and torso, and her matching hooded cloak (Was confused for a second, because her green and yellow suit with the cape is what I think of her AoA suit at first thought).
I guess I just want Age of Apocalypse too much lol
I loved coat rack Charles 😂
Considering how a terminator movie was happening world wide honestly the EMP is a necessary evil. The only straight up bad thing Magneto is doing is not dealing with the source of the murder cyborgs and refusing to stay and help out the mutants still on earth.
Also considering how the Doom made a cameo I’m pretty sure Earth magnetic field is probably fine cause you know he is able to fix it and will use it to fuel his ego and plans.
The thing is, he did way more than an EMP. Storm outright states she can feel the Earth's Magnetic Field dying. You know what else dies if that dies? Everything, because all the solar radiation is now hitting the planet. Most mutants can't survive that. So if he hadn't already, Magneto was about to top Bastion's mutant kill count by a hefty margin.
You do realize how many people would die from an event like that, right? Planes? Down. Hospitals? Now morgues. Traffic? Accidents everywhere. Not to mention the devastating permanent damage if the world's magnetic field never restarts. Life is only possible on Earth because we're shielded from cosmic rays by the magnetic field. That wasn't a necessary evil, it was callous expediency.

The show continues to be compelling, though I get the feeling that although the show stated the world was ending several times, some people weren’t quite getting that Magneto was basically going to kill off the planet except for his asteroid haven.
After the episode finished, I did stop to wonder that Magneto wasn’t going after Bastion.
Very curious where the techno organic people end up after this.

I thought this was another banger of an episode. I love the sense of escalation in this show, the stakes, drama and surprises keep mounting. The action scenes continue to be awesome, The Jean and Sinister fight was especially cool because I've never seen him engage in a battle like that. Also, Storm and Jean's moments were bloody beautiful! And man, seeing Magento actually do that moment from the comics to Wolverine was badass.
I've been hearing a fair few people talking about the 1000s dead being too low, I wonder if the writers made a deliberate choice here. The simple fact is 1000s dead is something people can come to terms with and grasp the horror of. Millions of dead is overwhelming, hitting people in that same numbness that Bastian was talking about - being too much to fully process. So they go with 1000s for the gut punch even if it is inaccurate.
I think they wanted to create an end of the world scenario reminiscent of the comics that inspired this season and at the same time preserve the symbolic impact of Genosha. I don't think they were able to do it satisfactorily.
1000's (Which is 999,999 technically) would be the best initial estimate. You probably can't say millions yet because you just have no idea, but thousands is a safe guess.

Five hour video essay please! Wouldn't Magneto be dead after being stabbed by Wolverine like that? He doesn't have regeneration powers, does he?
A lot more people should be dead with airplanes falling out of the sky and starting fires everywhere not to mention all the power plants that can't just be safely shut down when even their backup generators would be fried. Maybe that's what the Avengers and other superhumans are all busy doing?
You never miss with the hair and makeup!!! 😍💛💙
I really did appreciate the scene of Scott by Logan's bedside telling him 'Don't you dare break her heart, do what you do best; heal'.
It acknowledges that even though he doesn't like whatever he has with Jean, he validates how important Logan is to her.
This echoes Jean comforting him episodes earlier when Madelyne dies and also a moment in the comics where Jean as Phoenix (even after discovering their psychic affair) reassembles Emma's shattered diamond form telling her 'Wake up, Scott needs you.'
Wolverine "Been in a lot of wars, bub. The brave always die first." Didn't they teach you in any of those wars to kill first and make snarky comments later?
He couldn't kill magneto, because they still need him alive for Xavier to do his Mentok the mind taker thingy.
Google search results range between 300,000 and 1M people in the air at any given time. Until the EMP.

Seeing X-Men suit up in their classic costumes was something I didn't know I needed.
Been waiting on your take, hun. You and Rob.
So to be honest, I was dubious after hearing a lot of the pre-release hype. But, over all the the series have been pretty awesome. When mentioning all of the things that would shut down when Magneto E.M.P. ed the whole planet one thing that seems to have been overlooked is flying craft. How many airplanes, helicopters and other similar craft were in the air, not only that but think about any undersea craft that would just sink to the bottom, run out of air and everyone on board just die...
This is a great video I loved it :)
It's been great having this show, introducing the X-Men to my friends, being something I can look forward to every week, keeping me thinking about where it's going, I hope Marvel means it when they say that the wait for season 2 won't be too long because I need this show in my life
Magneto was right. But Magneto being right may not age well. Cable's scene of the Prime Sentinel future had Polaris being forced to use her magnetic powers on the Earth🌎. Magneto's refusal to reverse the EMP may be helping Bastion more than mutantkind.

@@brettwood1351 If so says the Master of Magnetism.
One thing that people notice, but don't give enough credit for is they've done *deep breath* X-Cutioners Song, Magnus as Headmaster, Inferno, E for Xtinction, Hellfire Gala, Genosha, Throneworld, Extinction Agenda, Fatal Attractions AND laid groundwork for Onslaught in EIGHT episodes and have tied it together....what?
Man this X-men version of the show has me going OMG in practically every ep, epically this one my gosh.
The need to adhere to the _Fatal Attractions_ plot with Wolverine does really question the tactical genius of Cyclops - there's 2 missions, one of which involves lots of robots that need to be neutralised, by for example getting sliced up, the other dealing with the master of magnetism, so where do you send the mutant with a metal skeleton and really sharp knives on his hands?
Hard to blame Magneto when millions of his people, on his their land, were mascaraed unprovoked. As much as I would like to believe that I might be able to rise above revenge, I'm pretty certain I would have done the same.
Don't forget that for Magneto, this was the second time he witnessed a holocaust. Being captured, depowered, and stripped nearly naked didn't make him feel any more sympathy either.
He groomed a young woman into becoming a terrorist. Plus he’s ironically making it hard for mutants and humans to coexist.
I can't help but think Rogue is kind of externalizing/projecting right now. Gambit was only in Genosha because he was feeling really insecure (and not without reason) about Rogue and Magneto getting closer. Not to say that it's her fault--he chose to go, Trask is the one who built the Sentinels. But "we all make our choices" is a line of reasoning that mitigates dressing down Xavier.
i've been meaning to watch this, havent had the time sadly, i am going to binge watch it this weekend,
I take umbrage with Storm being completely opposed to the neutralizer.
This also ties into my issue with mutants as an oppressed group; they're genuinely dangerous.
The parallel doesn't work for the real world; transfolk don't have the ability to level a building on their own, and if they did, they'd probably need to be regulated, because who can trust a society of people who can kill effortlessly?
It's ironic that the bad guys use guns, because you can take a gun away from a bad guy, but what do you do when that gun is part of his body?
Mutants as an oppressed minority is hard to swallow when many of them, especially with the ever increasing power creep, have abilities that allow them to subjugate non-mutants or make them unalive easily.
But I think the power creep is the biggest issue: Mutants have been getting more and more powerful as writers ask "If they can do X, couldn't they also do Y? But then wouldn't that mean we need someone who can do EVEN MORE to be a proper foe?"
We go from "Oh noes! A wooden gun! My greatest weakness!" to "I can basically mess up the whole planet when I'm pissed."
Can't wait for the Chekov's Gun of the Apocalypse mention in the first episode to pay off. You know who Bastion a techno organic mutant has a lot in common with, perhaps an older techno organic mutant. If Apocalypse were to be behind Bastion, more than likely in that he is to succeed to a point of wiping out weaker mutants and start the war of homo-superior vs homo-sapien, then Mr. Sinister who has had enough dealings with Apocalypse than to let him win might heal turn into a team up.
Am i th eonly one who feels like this whole show seems like a flashback as it hits 30 yrs of plot points at break neck pace?
Man, X-Men ‘97’s been hitting the 10/10s every week. Fingers crossed the season finale sticks its landing.
Apparently there are more than 1.3M people in the sky in airplanes at any given time. So magneto definitely killed millions
Every week my partner and I are like "well dang... that was an episode" and we sit for a moment thinking about it.
All of the old costumes are out. Rogue, Jean, and Cyclops are back to their originals--even Sunspot is back in his original New Mutants/X-Men costume. I also like how they showed that Storm's "new" costume was her original one. I know the point was to get to the "Magneto rips out Wolverine's adamantium," but Wolverine should have been on the "get Bastian" team, and Cyclops should have been there to go after Sinister. Storm was the best one to counter Magneto. I wish we would have gotten a Rahne/Moira cameo when they went to Muir Island.
I've been hoping for an wolverine vs hulk live action.... I envisioned Logans costume to be the one he wore in this episode, and we got to see the hulk too!!! yeah WOVERINE VS HULK!!! throw in a wendigo and alpha flight....
Good point - There is truth to the Logan vs Magneto rivalry not being as profound in the series, but, most will understand the gravity of the rivalry from other iterations and IF we accept the reference of Jean being the Phoenix, Storm being showcased as omega, and the quote "...black leather" then the statement of their feud hitting its zenith fits. IMO
This has been So much fun and...Amazing. problems aside, it's been masterfully constructed.
There was a biker uni diss? I love it!
I am a 58 yr old silver age reader (brag) of the old Clairmont/Byrne stories, the original cartoon( Pryde ) & the 1st series. While I admit the nostalgia IS strong with these new episodes, but it is just good reworking of a classic stories. The animation is really good. I am onboard and hopeful. I am anticipating an Avengers crossover, at some point, but I would want the Earth's Mightiest Hero's squad, (whoops!!! i would prefer the "Squaddies" even) I mean team, as opposed to the timeline accurate "United We Stand" crew. Peace S. keep reading.
I wonder if Sunspots turn would've hit a bit more if he'd had a chance to go to Genosha after being forced back in the closet by his mother. He'd be able to go to a place where he can be out as a mutant, and then it would've all been taken away. But either way, a great episode!
So Cyclops put Wolverine, the guy with metals bones, on the team that went after Magneto, the guy who controls metal, on purpose right?
He could have put Logan on the team going after the killer robots, but his wife is on that team, so nah, Magneto gets a freebie.
lol this is why Xavier didn't leave him the school.
I couldn't estimate the number of deaths from Magneto's EMP strike, but...as this is technically a fully-stocked MU (as of '97), it wouldn't be as high as one might expect (sooo many heroes, villains and other super-beings working overtime; as what typically happens during these types of crises, even many of the villains might be chipping in)
Hey Sacha! I love your and Amanda's view on the series and the comics in general. This last episode was , a little set back. I just think I was too crowded with plot points, and when I see this, I allways think that in the payoff, some of them are going to let unresolved. Plus, I get it, if they don't excite de fans, they won't be a next season, so they have to speed up and put it all in. But don't get me wrong, I loved it.
Long time watcher and fan. I am SO FRICKIN’ GLAD you’re covering this series as I've been enjoying it immensely. I'm old enough to have grown up with the original dark Phoenix saga comic run. But really enjoyed this original show and this updated version has been a joy to watch all in all. He's recaps have been a great way of increasing the joy of it all! Keep doing what you're doing and bringing a great and playful critical eye to all of this art and culture!!
Also love your double host stream with Amanda 🎉
The death tolls get kinda wild on some of these things.
For starters, the Genosha Massacre: In the comics, the total mutant population in Genosha was supposed to be 16 million, with the statement that it had over half the TOTAL mutant population. So we're looking at a total global number of 32 million at max, maybe 24 million on the low end. So that's the number of people Bastion was in the process of killing/capturing with the new Prime Sentinels.
But then the damage from the EMPs also feels like it gets exaggerated to a degree. The first one every one mentions: planes. Just because a plane has lost power does not mean it just drops out of the sky like a rock. It's not easy and it's not pretty but it is possible to get a plane on the ground with moderate safety from a glide. So it is wrong to just declare EVERY person who was in the air as dead.
Hospitals as well would not be the total write offs so many are assuming. Yes there would be SOME casualties, but hospitals do have non-electronic methods for a lot of procedures. Hospitals get black outs, especially during conflicts and natural disasters when a lot of people get hurt. Plenty of doctors and nurses have trained for this kind of situation (or at least something close to it).
I've heard some people talk like every person in a CAR is a goner and that one's just super silly. Yes, every car was gonna die, but they wouldn't EXPLODE. If anything, the two critical things that would KEEP working would be steering and brakes, since they are largely mechanical in process. There'd be some accidents, but it wouldn't be a total blood bath.
As well, pacemakers were another item a lot of people brought up. While not a GREAT scenario, people don't just immediately drop dead if their pacemaker breaks. There's certainly an increased RISK, but it isn't a death sentence.
But considering Magneto was saying "thousands" in reference to the Genosha Massacre, I'm almost wondering if the show is also downplaying the totals to "thousands" just because saying "millions", even if accurate, would break most people's brains on the terms of scale. Like, when looking at a world of 7 BILLION people, small percentage values still add up millions real quick. But a person imagining a million names of the dead becomes this scope of destruction that overwhelms. So wonder if they're just using "thousands" to keep the audience frame of mind closer to "natural disaster" and not "extinction event".
Its fair to consider that in the comics Genosha was completely wiped out. Here the attack was fairly minimized in comparison thanks to Magneto and Gambit's efforts. And its a lot younger in its life as a mutant nation in comparison so its population likely isnt in the millions of it's comics counterpart. And I realize this is a bit weird to say, I think it's a good thing narratively that there were survivors who lived to be traumatized by the event. Unlike the original comic storyline, There are thousands of people who were there and experienced it. Instead of being an amputation that wasn't personally experienced by the rest of the mutant population, Its now a burn whose scar can actively felt and remembered by those who were there. It leaves threads open for the survivor's experience during and after to be explored once again.
I feel like the show will ultimately downplay the death toll of Magneto's EMP at least compared to IRL. Mostly because this is a world of superpowers, superheroes, magic, and advanced tech. This is still a world with Iron Man, Dr.Doom, Dr.Strsnge, and the Fantastic Four. So their presence likely mitigates a lot of casualties from becoming fatalities. I dont think they'll shy away from the larger consequences of this though. AvX is the most popular theory for a storyline to be adapted but I think they're likely also putting seeds for adaptations of Civil War, Messiah Complex/God Loves Man Kills. Something of a Superhuman/Mutant registration act might be enough to push Cyclops further towards becoming a revolutionary and I dont think Reverend's Strykers cameo in Ep.8 was just an easter egg.
@@plushiepenguin While it's likely not as large as the full 16 million, I do think that attack easily killed 50-75% of the Genoshan people.
But the numbers were also to give a sort of baseline global consideration. Sometimes, people think mutants are just, like, 10k total. Having their global numbers in the tens of millions is important.
But you are correct that having even SOME survivors is going to have a much more lasting impact on the community and the story.
I don't know if I really want an AvX story, at least yet. We don't even KNOW these Avengers, really, and it would become either the X-men getting muscled into a smaller portion of their own show or the conflict to be very broadly one sided in the justification department.
If it's just the X-men having to deal with the Avengers gunning for them, then all that's doing is making the Avengers the bad guys.
@@hartthorn I meant AvX is often being brought up in current discussions but I think it's more likely to be like Civil War than that. Former showrunner and writer Beau DeMayo has been likening the Genoshan genocide to the effects of traumatic events like 911 with the rest of the current season dealing with the immediate fallout. Post-genosha, I could see this world's climate bubbling towards a Superhuman registration act much like the war on terror did towards the Patriot act. Especially after one superhuman crippled the globe in one night.
I don't think it'd be as immediate as next season though. Season 2 feels like it'd be an attempt at healing with maybe adapting more of the Morrison run (Plz let Emma join the X-Men). And then I think they could delve into the radicalization of the young from both ends of the spectrum. Maybe adapting the Omega gang storyline from the Morrison run for the mutant side. And then cover Reverend Stryker and the Purifiers for the human side. X97 has been ballsy enough that I think they'd take cues from God Loves Man Kills. That Rev.Stryker cameo in Ep.8 def leans that way. And that's probs while building the political climate for Civil War in the background.
Revolutionary Cyclops is likely happening eventually though. Doubt it'd be the same but this Cykes is already becoming disillusioned with Xavier's dream. I'd wager he'd step down from leader or even leave the team this finale.
I love this series! Back in the day I was reading X-men during the fatal attraction series. I have issue #25 autographed!
only one question... why did they use the 70's uniforms since in the animated series were not canonical... and even weirder cable got his early 00's costume (mostly because it would be much easier to animate) but still the all new x-men uniforms kinda bugged me...
also note because I forgot to mention that, rogue usually took the place of colossus on the animated series so I did not find that shocking that she went with him (and will remain to take care of him much like colossus did).
This has been so good. The entire season was gold. Tho, I'm super nervous for the finale. I need them to stick the landing.
I'm a touch sad Rogue sided with Magneto, but it makes sense due to the plot. I was thinking it would be Cyclops instead since they have been showing him furthering from Charles the whole season and thought that would be neat.
But still so so good!
All I can think of when I saw Bastion in this episode was Assimilate.
I don't know if anyone told you this but you are awesome luv ya
The meta Morph joke went under most people's radar.
This episode had a LOT happen. I'm not used to having a cartoon have so many things going on for the brain to digest. I like the direction the show is going in... like you, I'm wondering whether they stick the landing on the finale. Here's hoping!
I like to imagine the blender was telling Bastion it couldn't stand anymore being used to tear bananas into pieces.
The last 5 minutes of this episode went so hard. 😂😂
I feel like they are setting up a Phoenix moment but it will be for Jean and Storm to put their powers together and destroy the base. Morph will get the last shot at Sinister somehow.
I don’t think Magneto was talking to Wolverine, but to Charles when crossing a new line by ripping out the adamantium from Wolverine, one of Charles’ X-Men. The big feud, the central one, has always been between Professor X and Magneto. It does look like they’re inching toward Onslaught which will be a completion of that test Charles’ began to fail when using his power to hijack Magneto’s mind. Definitely on the edge of my seat in anticipation for the season finale 😬
The seeds for Onslaught arrival has been planted. Too bad there only one episode left and we have to wait a year for season 2.
uhhh Deadpool & Wolverine come out this year in July
@@TheHeston83 That movie is unlikely to be a continuation of this story
Im loving it was a little late to the party but I am enjoying also Deadpool & Wolverine opens in July more X-Men
This was a heavy episode. But, Magneto telling Charles to shut up had me laughing hard. The way the music went silent, had me thinking Magneto was going to drop some serious knowledge. Instead, he forcefully says shut up. The episode needed that bit of levity to help break up the weightiness of it all.
Critical equipment is shielded from EMPs.
I had problem with the rivalry line, too. I mean, I could see if that was Gambit but I don’t recall any rivalry with Wolverine. 🤷🏾♂️ Still dope episode and the 80’s kid in me was smiling because of the old school costumes.
Hospitals have generators, even in 1997, in case power is lost. I doubt that many people died immediately, if at all.
I had a theory that for this adaptation the reason that Cable didn't try harder to time travel to fix the Genosha event and that he's so easily manipulated by Sinister near the end of this episode was because it's not Cable, it's Stryfe. We'll see if that theory pans out or not (I actually hope it doesn't, since then they'd have to explain Stryfe and with Beau DeMayo out for potential season 3 I don't expect it'll be handled as competently as it could've been with him as showrunner).
Frankly, I'll be glad if this season sticks the landing with the finale since the only real complaint I had about it beyond the quick pacing as a result of ten episodes instead of at least thirteen is the anachronism of adapting 2000s+-era stuff to a show whose entire conceit is "what if the original series continued through 1997" when that material didn't even exist to be adapted yet. Even when the original series adapted Phalanx Covenant it was probably at best six months of production from the end of that storyline to when it first aired unless they produced it in conjunction with the comics writing teams, and even adapting slightly older but still relatively contemporary storyline aspects like the Acolytes gave hit-or-miss results that clearly felt more rushed than other stories.
It's good. Crazy good. Insanely good! The writing is amazing. The dialogue is fantastic. God I wish in all this insanity they could have worked the New Mutants into this.
Only reason I thought Logan might get his metal ripped out was because someone on a website I visit suggested it might happen.
Here's something trippy. As much as loved super-heroes, I grew up poor so what little money I did have would got towards video-games. But I did manage to learn about the Onslaught event as it was happening and even read the final issue. He then appeared as a boss in Marvel vs Capcom. For years and years after I thought he was pretty cool and assumed people liked him. Wasn't until around 2014 when I actually started following comics as they came out that I learned him and his entire era weren't very well liked. Then I think they brought his armor back and put the Red Skull's head on it which sounds really freaking stupid.
So what's kinda interesting is seeing people on other videos commenting that Onslaught may be coming like they are fans when I've been lead their just aren't many.
I feel like the one team in the older outfits taking on Magneto on Asteroid M was, to me at least, a slight nod to Pryde of The X-Men.
