Not all the claims put on the Dogon have been verified. Did they really get their astronomical knowledge from space aliens?? Where are the Dogon telescopes? There are too many questions that need to be cleared up before we start teaching about the Dogon.

The 2 French explorers reported in 1932 that the Doggone knew that Sirius was actually a binary star system, the much smaller Sirius B is invisible to the naked eye and had only been observed through telescope some 30 years previous. To those skeptics that attribute the Doggones knowledge to a traveling westerner informing them of Sirius B in the 30 some years b4 Rene G.s encounter, consider - only a handfull of ppl on earth were aware of the European discovery of Sir B, no account of contact with the Doggone exists b4 Rene G's, Are we to believe that between 1900 and 1032, someone w that knowledge traveled to that secluded part of Mali, informed the Doggone and left no record of it? And just as implausible, the Doggone only then incorporated Sirius B into their ceremony and belief system? No, it's inconceivable.

      Ok, so I'll explain.
20,000 years ago there was an expansion of two groups people out of the Nubian Cultural Complex in Southern-Central Sudan & Northern South Sudan.
One group is sometimes called the Anu speaking peoples and they primarily expanded north-eastward, corresponding with the Afro-Asiatic speakers.
And, the other group doesn't have an official name, as far as I know, but they correspond to what Dr. Robert Blench proposes as the Niger-Saharan speakers. Which contains two of the three major African language families proposed by Dr. Joseph Greenberg to have originated in the Sudan.
Note: The Afro-Asiatic speakers (Anu) & the Niger-Saharan speakers (Niger-Congo & Nilo-saharan) came out of the same Cultural Complex. So, there will be similarities and it explains the greater cultural unity among African cultures that we observe in my field of Anthropology.
      But wait, there's more.
A band of Anu speakers also moved westward along the Mediterranean coast all the way down into Senegal. This band of people were PART of the ancestors of the Wolof-Serer, Soninke-Mande, Dogon, Mauri, and Tuareg. Just to name a few.
Note: I said PART of their ancestors because the Anu speakers recombined with the Niger-Saharan speakers and other peoples that were already in West Africa to form various Kingdoms and Empires through out history.
The Amazigh/Berbers, are the Tuareg that remained above the Sahara after desertification. Linguistically, the Tuareg have the greater antiquity, resemble other West Africans, and reside primarily in Mali. While the Amazigh in Morocco have seen and incorporated influxes of immigrants from Europe, such as the Romans after the Punic Wars and the Visigoths after 410 AD.
The similarities in symbology are the results of both a common origin and/or the subsequent 17,000 years of history and cultural exchange before the Sahara dried.

I have a question. If these are the beliefs of the Dogon, then does that mean that pre-Islamic Mande speaking peoples held the same beliefs (as the Dogon claim ancestry from them)? This means that this scientific belief systems were more prevalent than once thought. Thus Africa before foreign influence was a treasure trove of science

@@hasankidar4646 It was both the Abrahamic religion and climate change. Pre-Islamic Africans were incredibly smart. They were more in tune with their surroundings; their brains and sensory organs were most likely highly advanced because their spiritual beliefs were not formed from a 'set of rules' but rather, via their relationship with their environment. Many of the gods they worshipped were in line with the weather patterns and the nature around them. Then the Abrahamics arrived with their 'set of rules'. This new belief system from the Abrahamics 'dumbed' down Africans because they could no longer 'think' for themselves, or monitor the energy within their surroundings to survive. Even in countries like Northern Nigeria who are mostly Muslims, you will find that the mass population has the highest illiteracy rates when compared to the southern Nigerians who, as a whole, are more educated and successful. The southern Nigerians repelled Islam for 700 years until Christianity arrived. Most chose Christianity over Islam because the former was less invasive to their traditional beliefs. Nonetheless, they still remain smarter.

Awesome. I learned about the Dogon last year whilst cycling through Kenya.
An interesting thing I learned about them, the Dogon, IN RELATION to an ancient tribe in Namibia's Twyfelfontein - the rock art techniques there, possess a strikingly similar rock engraving techniques to the Dogin, both dating 5000-6000 years old (supposedly).
By far the most interesting was these two tribes' depictions of their respective shamans. In Namibia, the shaman was depicted as half lion, half man engraved - and the Dogon used engravings very similar, only half man, half DOLPHIN.
I dont want to jump the gun here, but the Dogon knew sooo much about scientific exploration of the human mind and body, that they explanded their knowledge into other beings, and took a very fine interest to Dolphins.
