Always love when the pen and paper come out. Means we're about to learn some serious Theory. Really appreciate how simple you make it all seem.
I just came across your channel and I have to say: NOW I understand the things I was doing when I played the guitar back when I was 16 (52 years ago). :)
So brilliant! Ricky, it is like you pull back the curtains and show the internals that make music work and reveal why the guitar is built the way it is. Thank you for providing such ancient wisdom is an accessible form!
Thanks Ricky! Super helpful!
Splendid!
Rick thank you for your guidance. You have showed me true guitar enlightenment. The free pdfs help so much and allow me to keep what i watched in my head. No other teacher does this. You are awesome. Thank you
Brilliant information thanks for posting
Love these lessons. Just bought your book.
Excellent video. I learned some stuff!
Thank you Ricky.
Great 👍 lesson 👌!!!
Hello Ricky, Michael from Dovestone earlier today. The DroneGUy. Good to see you.
Hiya Michael! my email is support@rickysguitar.com if you want to get in touch. Good to meet you too!
im confused about flatting the 3rd in the minor key. how do you flat a C or an F when they dont have flats? I realize you are at a point where there is a half step between the 2nd and 3rd chord but arent C and F already a half step from B and E? Thanks
You're mixing note names and intervals. The tricky thing to get your head around is superimposing layers of information. Sometimes, it's easy to think they mean the same thing because they're manifesting the same thing.
If you had C as the b3 the underlying minor key would be A minor. The alphabet letter has no tonality fixed to it. None of the alphabet letters are repeated.
So A minor is:
A B C D E F G A
R 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 R
Another example in D minor:
D E F# G A B C# D
R 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 R
Notice the intervals (numbers) don't change. The note names (alphabet) change to fit the scale formula/structure, (which is fixed).
Thank you
The flat 3, flat 6 and flat 7 in the minor key was also a bit confusing at first. Until I put the Am key next to A Major Key. Then it was actually clear to see why they are noted as flats. If you have the Major Key and you flatten the 3rd, 6th and 7th you will get the minor key with the same Root Note. Eureka!!!
Am Bdim C Dm Em F G
b3. b6. b7
A. Bm. C#m D. E. F#m G#dim
I think you should’ve put this onto paper lol.
I am enjoying these theory videos, thank you!
I have already done that in a video on my channel. Glad you enjoyed the lessons
@@rickysguitar I must’ve missed it. Thanks mate, I will have a look for it now 👍🏻
Excellent lesson. I love the paper and pen lessons. However, I am still confused about the minor keys.
Thanks for another great lesson. Your book recently arrived and it’s quite helpful. FYI, it’s Yin Yang, not Ying Yang😊
Bulldog minor Theory, I can never un-see this now :)
Eyup Brett! That's the point lol! I just installed it in your head so you didn't have to forget to remember it!
Great lesson but I’m missing something. If you flatten the third as in both examples you get Am, B dim, C flat. But C flat is B. And, same with the Dm example: Dm, E dim, F flat…again F flat equals E? Thanks Ricky. Love your lessons.
Eyup Don! The structure of the "bulldogs teeth" follows the minor scale formula (w h w w h w w)
R 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
A B C D E F G
D E F G A Bb C
I think you might be flattening an extra interval.
If you're in my Facebook group I can answer better with an image.
Thanks Ricky.
I am lost too.
Can I ask what yamaha pacifica model that is and also what year many thanks they look great guitars

Very useful to know. I still get confused with flats is a B flat A sharp
This was not me James it was a spammer
@@rickysguitar oh ok I’ve recently watched another video explaining sharps and flats and they look the same thing 😂
The American Songbook uses the minor keys and minors.
Hey, thanks for the lesson. I have a question about using this with '7th' chords. If I play a chord progression like 1 6 2 5 in Em, should I make that 5th chord a dominate chord?
Only if you want to modulate to the harmonic minor. BUT, if it sounds good to YOU. Do it!!
Hmmm
Was going ok but what’s bamboozled me is on the A minor page we have the wonky bulldogs teeth, but then on the F minor the Bulldogs teeth have now got an extra full step tooth between the fangs… lost me ??
Ok. So maybe this is still a step too far. Do you know how scales are constructed? If not this video might be the one! czcams.com/video/Xft7J6hiQvg/video.html
@@rickysguitar Please be ensured i really like your lessons etc that’s why i’m sticking with it it’s just frustrating when you so want to understand but can’t ( yet ) been playing acoustic for two years so have understanding of basic chord shapes etc and understand the 1 ; 4; 5 etc also can play a few tunes etc, obviously want to go further.. Appreciate your responses and your patience Ricky..
NOODLES…
@@rickysguitar I think some of the problem might actually be dialect… lol.. A handsome Northern lad trying to explain to a West Ham Cockney boy ain’t never gonna be easy is it…
I didn't realise you were West Ham...What are you guys doing selling Rice to Arsenal!! Obviously confused!!
@@rickysguitar very very sad day if and when he goes he’s a luvly chap too.. Yep! my first game was 1967.X
