  • Performed at Rockwood Music Hall, December 22, 2012. Have you ever noticed how many of the best Christmas songs have a little tinge of sadness? This is especially true for those written during WWII. This song was written in 1943 and appeared in the movie Meet Me in St. Louis in 1944, sung by Judy Garland. The original lyric was "Have yourself a merry little Christmas / It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past". The writer was asked to make it somewhat cheerier, but the minor chords remained, and when Judy Garland performed it at the Hollywood Canteen, she brought the soldiers to tears. I always think of servicemen that didn't come home when I hear this song, but it's still one of my favorites. Thank you to Amanda for such a lovely version.
