📄 Need for Speed: Underground 2 is a cross-platform racing video game and the eighth installment in the Need for Speed series, the direct sequel to Need for Speed: Underground. It was developed and published by Electronic Arts in 2004, for Microsoft Windows, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS and mobile phones. Like its predecessor, it was also commercially successful, selling around 11 million copies worldwide and breaking sales records in the United Kingdom.

The PS2 & XBOX ports of NFSUG2 are equally impressive.
All versions are pretty impressive for their respective hardware.
JAVA is extremely impressive especially for a 2004 mobile game, GBA is another one that impresses me a lot considering that 3D games are rare on the console as it wasn't made for that, the Nintendo DS version is very nice for the hardware (I take a chance on to say that it is even prettier than the NFS that came later for the console ) and the PSP version is very close to the PS2/GC/Xbox version.
The PS2, GC and Xbox version is not much to talk about, they are very similar, the Xbox version is definitely the best, the Game Cube one seems to me to have textures with lower quality than the PS2 (which is strange considering it was a more powerful console ).

the Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2, but it used much smaller discs that couldn't hold as much, so the textures were downscaled to fit
Java version is just a modification for Fast and Furious. It was necessary to show the BREW version.

PS2 version here runs on PCSX2 emulator with GPU rendering, thus graphics are wrong because color filter is broken there. To get the graphics right you need to run NFSU2 in Software mode rendering.
There're some things that divide PS2 version from the others (obviously because absolutely different hardware from Gamecube, Xbox and PC):
1. Traillights are different, and they come from rear lights of the cars which is not the case with other versions;
2. A LOT better and stronger fog effect, which is also used to give a realistic picture of heavy rain;
3. Static blur is presented in the cutscenes for making a camera focus effect (motion blur is there in all versions);
4. I believe that smoke effects are different and they're better in PS2 version, though I'm not quite sure here.
All in all I feel the picture in PS2 version being more believable than in other versions, because low resolution hides inperfections of low polygonal objects and lowres textures on them pretty well, and effects are smartly used to make the graphics more realistic. I guess the PS2 version is the definitive one here. Black Box did a good job porting the game to the other platforms though (at least they treated them better than Rockstar did with their GTA 3D Trilogy which looked catastrophically terrible on PC compared to PS2 cuz lack of shaders).

the "PSP version" you're showing actually came out as a "prequel" to Underground 1 rather than Underground 2, so it shouldn't really be in this video... as it has nothing to do with underground 2

The GameCube is how I played it back in the day, great times. I eventually played the PS2 and PC versions, and immediately noticed that the GCN version was missing a few things - Probably due to hardware limitations and/or time limits with porting the code.
The air traffic and whilst there was still rainfall, the raindrops on the screen effect were omitted. The brightness of street lights and headlights are considerably duller, as well as missing the violet tinge on the edges of the lens flare effect. Also, the overall contrast between lit and shadowed parts of the environment is noticeably less pronounced.
Still, it's the version I initially played (and played the heck out of), so I can't really fault it... Even though I just did!

It's crazy how Underground 1 was so impressive on GameCube, with Underground 2 it's a toss up compared to PS2 and nowhere near the Xbox.
Why are you downgrading PSP version? When i playwd this on my phone with emulator, there's wasn't any pixels

DS - 1/10 (Bad port)
PSP - 8/10 (The game is great but they should add free roam (along with the PSP version of Most Wanted and Undercover))

uh it's obvious. you didn't had any comparable quality/ graphic at the time that could run on a pc at a reasonable price.
A pc back than had roughly the same price as today if you wanted an high end pc.
around that time the only other games that got close to the graphics of NFSU2 where maybe Doom 3 or Farcry (1).
if you think about it, it was even more impressive back then to see a new game and it's changes compared to today standards where you do not see that much changing from one shooter to an other. today everyone as a kind of idea how to get a pretty look to the game without much limitation.
But in 2004 if a game had for example some decent reflections it was very likely not many dev's had done it before or had to figure it out with such good optimisation for weak PCs.... And optimisation is here a key word as well.
the dev's back in that time had higher boundaries than now if it was due to hard drive, RAM, GPU or bandwidth limitation between these parts.
i mean NFSU 2 had what? 1.5GB at max. 2GB of hard drive storage with that many textures and cutscenes for 20 hours of gameplay.
you are lucky today if you can exceed 10 - 15 hours of mainstorry gameplay in a 30-50 GB game in an ok optimized game.
i mean if you are interested to see what some dev's has accomplished with an incredible work watch "How did Resident Evil 2 manage to fit on a single Nintendo 64 Cart ?" form "Modern Vintage Gamer".

Believe it or not, this version really is from the classic Xbox, if you research it, it was much superior, having a better CPU than the PS2.
