AUDI RECYCLING PROCESS - What Happens to Audi Cars at the End of their Life?

  • Audi, along with 15 partners from the recycling, research, and supplier sectors, is working on the "MaterialLoop" project to reuse post-consumer materials from end-of-life vehicles in the production of new cars. The aim is to avoid downcycling and achieve a highly efficient circular economy concept. In October 2022, 100 vehicles were dismantled and the targeted disassembly of individual components enabled the retention of high-quality secondary materials for recycling. Audi wants to increase the share of recyclates in the Audi fleet and is also involved in recycling used automotive glass, plastics, and aluminum.

Lots of reasons an OEM scraps cars, to prevent liability. No VIN, Pre-production units (parts are owned by the suppliers, and may not be perfect - in need of fine-tuning, color/appearance), bought-back lemons (yes, every OEM has those...), defects on production lines, engineering mules, test units, etc.

BMW produces 250k cars a year and scraps 125k. Cheap german rental cars like BMW and Audi usually last for 5 years, only the best survivors get sold to the public. Basically no one buys a new car in germany.

The priority should be on repair and reuse. If these two are impossible then only recycle will be the final option. Destroying good cars and parts in the name of saving environment is just absurd!!! If they repair and reuse old cars and parts then they will sell less new ones. It is dirty business too.

    • @megaemintm

It depends on labour in the specific country. If it is economically not phsible, then the car is scrapped. One scrap car in a country is not in another. I know that France sends lots of cars to Poland to be repaired and used rather than scrapping them. Also lots of parts go to African countries.

It's amazing the amount of people that don't understand that OEMs dismantle, crush, and recycle their prototype vehicles and get UPSET. Prototypes are liability with (likely) non-compliant parts and that aren't certified for road use. Be glad these vehicles are getting recycled and not just rotting away in a holding yard.

It seems to me that it is not environmentally friendly to dispose of relatively new cars, the Audis in this video looked usable, but they were disposed of after spending additional energy. And then they will produce the same cars, spending a lot of energy and producing no less emissions. It would be more logical to dispose of really old and unusable cars

I believe that the newer vehicles are pre-production test vehicles and parts cannot be used from them as they have not been approved for normal road traffic use, or they are damaged. It is a liability issue where it is easier for VAG (as with most car manufacturers) to destroy test vehicles and their components so none end up on an unsuspecting persons vehicle then they have a lawsuit for unsafe parts.

Hi, so I don't know if you're from the U.S. maybe you already know but I'll just tell you anyway:
Audis just like BMWs and Mercedes have a different customer base here than they have in the U.S. A lot of older people 50+ buy them, which means they usally have a dry place to stand in, are not driven hard on the autobahn (only exeption being company cars which usally are midsize stationwagons here like the A4, 3 series or c-class they get driven by all kinds of people). But engines and transmissions can fail on these like on any other car or when you trade then in at an Audi, Mercedes or BMW dealership they usally get crapped if they're older than 6 years because they can't get their specific warranty for the cars (like the Audi Gebrauchtwagen Plus[=used car plus] I don't know the name of BMWs and Mercedes used car warrantys but I think Mercedes are called Junge Sterne [=young stars] max. 4 years old and 50.000km/~31.000miles) and if they have more than 80.000km/~50.000miles, they are just not worth keeping in stock for the dealerships. The market for older used premium cars is usally seached out by younger people between 18-28 years but they don't wanna spend more than around 20.000€/~21.300$.
Other possabilities why these cars are getting scrapped might be water damage (we had a big flood catastrophy(?) in some regions of Germany in 2021 or some people here also explained that these cars could have been test cars.
