Welcome back to Xross Platform, a spinoff of Remake or Rebreak where we look at different games of the same name released in the same generation! This time we're looking at the forgotten Banjo Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge for the Game Boy Advance, as well as its even more forgotten mobile phone ports. Which version will receive Xross Platform M.V.P.? For once, Exo isn't a hipster about it, though he still refers to himself in the 3rd person.

"Was it so hard to have music and sound effects playing at the same time?"
Yeah, actually. That era of phones had single-channel polyphonic midi output, so it could only play one sound at a time.
Great review though! Good job hunting down the java version of those games!!
Japanese phone games, however....should've been for other systems as well.
Some games didn't use midi so it actually could play sound and music at the same time
@@surfacner5989 Also, asking too much about them can get you blocked on Twitter, too. (or was it the control difficulty?)
@@wingedpikpik1787 uhhh what XD
@@surfacner5989 if you grew up with java phone games i suggest you play diamond rush. its one of the best old java games
GB games are developed in machine language, its a code made specifically for the GB's CPU. Its very hard to program, but very efficient. Cell phone games were made using Java's SDK, in order to be compatible with many models and brands. Not only Java is garbage for games, but the code is not made to take advantage of any specific hardware. The music is mode using the internal phone's MIDI generator. It can sound different on other models, some phones can't even play any sound because of it. I grew up playing many old Java cellphone games, you can't expect much from them, but there are some gems, like Gameloft's Lost game for old Nokia phones.
^^^ exactly this
Ragging on the game for being awful is fair enough, most java moible games of this kind are awful. Making comparisons to the Gameboy, with games specifically made for a consistent and unchanging hardware, is not fair in the slightest. In reality, this is very likely the best they could have done given the limitations.
Even recreating Super Mario Land 2 for this kinda Java, with its resolution and basic color scheme and basic gameplay and all, likely still would encounter major issues being translated to this java.
Zenny TH Java is only good for Minecraft
@@VictorGreinvolfe48 he's talking about old java dummy. Minecraft runs on java 7+ and now usually runs on java 11
And what on earth do people expect from those games? Playstation quality?
java is just ass in general. They only teach it at universities because it's easy to use and still used in the industrie a lot
review aside, managing to cut 40 pounds is no easy feat.
that's really impressive!
@Zachary Erickson if possible try keto, I was 240 and since I didn't want to get to 250 I did keto for a month and got down to 217, it worked well but it will make you feel like crap for a day or 2 at the start.
WHAT IS THIS?!?!? A SHORT EPG REVIEW?!!? You thought it was impossible, but you thought wrong.
When 30 minutes is considered short, you know you're on a EPG video.
quote on quote
Thing is, he used to do 20-35 minute reviews when he was starting out, and every now and again lately he's done 30~ minute reviews (Megaman review from 2 years ago). It's a nice change of pace :P
@@ChiruKobra Haha, definitely.
short lmao
Only Exo could talk about "Grunty's Revenge" for half an hour. This dude's a madman and I respect that
by that standard, Banjo-Tooie should have been 4 hours long
I get a little spark of dopamine every time I see a new Xross Platform or RoR!! Thank you EPG for feeding us early Xmas Presents!
Already knowing the ending does not ruin the impact of the story.
It's more of a set up to inspire you to get to her... She HAS to be destroyed, if not then there will be no Tooie. It's more about the adventure itself not the destination.
Why did you capitalize HAS dweeb

Well, at least *I* don't need it. Because the timestamps in the description work.
I saw the title and went straight to my App Store, I’m an idiot
been waiting for your return!
Really glad you're doing better. For a while it seemed like you weren't doing too well, but even from the way you're talking now I can see a difference.
Working your brain and body with two big lifestyle changes are hard enough, yet you're still pumping out videos. Super thankful for this one; great content as always. Merry Christmas!
Amazing progress, Exo. It’s great to see all the stuff you’re doing efficiently and I’m proud of you. Good luck on college and keep up the amazing content!
Merry Christmas, Micheal. Thanks for the great video, Exo
You’re going for a Bachelor’s in Game Design? That’s awesome EPG! I’m sure you’ll do great things in the industry, knowing your videos here on YT.
I don't really watch u that much but the start was just super nice to see u getting on so well. Keep it up my man
Always glad to see more EPG vids on my feed
Wait I have an EXO-THEORY!
Exo hates Into the Spider-Verse's visuals
Reasons:
DITHERS EVERYWHERE! THERE ARE DOTS ON THE VIEW SCREEN!
XD
SEND A PIZZA ROLL TO THIS WEB ZONE IF YOU KNOW WHY DITHERING'S A MEME
You sound and look much happier and healthier. Good to see ya grow bud. Glad you're doing well. As always the video was stellar.
Been a while since we got a short review like this. But it's still awesome!
1:07 Wow , I didn't even know you were looking like after last review, kind of jarring really
Wow, I'm glad you liked Season of Flame so much! That was one of my first GBA games, and while I've replayed it (for the first time in years) around a year ago and liked it, I was worried my admiration of it was only due to nostalgia. I'm happy to hear that I was wrong!
NEW EPG VIDEO!!! Dude I just started watching you videos and your content is so fucking good!
You're honestly one of the most underrated CZcamsrs
"if GameBoy games can have music and sound while also running at 60fps, why can't the Java game fare better"
simple, because its Java, Java sucks for videogames
I played a lot of these old Java cellphone games growing up. I don't remember a single time one of those games even reached 30 FPS. Mostly are 20 or even 15 FPS.
Minecraft?
It's a really old version of Java tho
No way gba is 60fps lmao 15 max
@@HistoryandReviews 59.727500569606 frames per second to be exact, so yeah, basically 60 fps
Welcome back
I love the old intro video. Great presentation here, exogamer
Cool review, and cool cat to!
you have no idea how excited i am to see spyro covered!!
Hey! I've actually done a 100% speedrun of the mobile version (The first one actually) and I just wanted to clear up a couple things from this video:
-2nd Grunty fight is possible, I'm unsure why it didn't seem to work for you but for me I just spam left and right to get the pink enemies off
-At 27:20 in the video there are items that seem "unreachable" however, the game can't show you from perspective but there's actually a box behind the boxes on the right with the note on top that allows you to jump up there
Overall, the version of this game is pretty eh- not amazing. It's more of a meme to me than anything but I wanted to clear up that a 100% completion of the game is possible! :)
Unkinderpine0 thank you for keeping java games alive, man. I used to make my indie games in java. I just think it's really cool that people out this much effort into people who developed for this platform :)
@@auralunaprettycure haha no problem. Haven't played it in a while tho, I've thought about taking wr record back from the only other person to run 100% of the game. Plus I'd still have it had the emulator not crashed during my run xD
Wow I knew about the box but i was never able to beat the second box when I was a child
It’s funny. I was just thinking of you yesterday wondering what the next review was.
a new video!!!
I LOVE YOUR CAT OMG what a talkative babey :D
7:13
Banjo has entered the downward spiral
This was before the trainwreck that was N&B. But yes, it was the beginning of the end for Banjo-Kazooie at this point. The final nail in the coffin was N&B
He got transferred to the Green Simpsons universe.
+maskofthedragon Aw man. I missed an obvious Nine Inch Nails joke.
I literally was just saying to myself, "Hmm it feels like EPG might upload a review soon" and he delivered!
Yes another ksross platform episode!
congrats on the losing weight!!!
Yeah!!
Eh? He wasn’t fat before
Anakin Skywalker Some people just feel as if they’ve gotta lose a couple o’ pounds. He wasn’t FAT, per se, more chubby.
You don't necessarily have to look like a sumo fighter to be considered fat. 40 pounds is a big difference on how a person looks and how they feel comfortable with themselves
I actually really enjoyed the unlockable moves in banjo tooie, it felt like opening new possibilities every time I found a new move, and seeing things I couldn't do yet gave me motivation to find the moves I needed
Well, glad to see you back, despite being a little "controversial", last time, but hey, still love you! ^^
Merry Christmas Exo!!!
Another solid revoo, Exio! Yeah, it may have been a few months since your last video, but that's okay, it was absolutely worth the wait! Yeah, I have heard about you starting a new development into game design on your community page, which is awesome as that's my long dream of being a video game developer (which you may have recalled I told you about it in one of your Thousand Year Door livestreams around February 2016 (which were to celebrate you having 10,000 subscribers at the time) in the chatstreams)!! I hope it goes really well for you, and I'll be sure to check your brand newly developed game(s) if possible!! :D I also hope you'll enjoy my game(s) too (whenever I can start my career into video game designing, of course)!
Finally one of my childhood games reviewed, the version I used was the GBA.
Merry early Christmas EPG
Great to have you back, EPG! I remember wanting to play this game when I had a GBA but never getting around to it for some reason. This review convinced me that I wasn't missing much.
Might I suggest, at some point, doing a Yooka--Laylee defense? So many people dislike that game, but I saw you praise it in your Banjo-Tooie ROR. I would love to see you do a video review/defense of that game.
Love your channel, but I wish it was only focued in this kind of contents, without longplays or random stuff like that.
You are really good in reviewing games in your own unique way!
Loved your Klonoa videos btw, can't wait for the GBA Spyro ones!
A 30 minute only Exo video? Never thought I'd see the day.
27:21 There's a Platform behind the Music Note on the right that allows you to get to that Platform. And Speedruns can 100% (no idea why). But still, it's really bad design.
Yay missed your content
This game would’ve been generally way better if it had more worlds, a menu map function and was fundamentally designed from an isometric perspective, much alike to the Spyro GBA games.
The boy is back!!!!
I've been so curious about this
Was rewatching the ROR and Xross Platform videos posted before this, and I'm glad to see this posted before Christmas
Hope you Have a Happy Holidays Michael!
1:08
I laughed more than I should have.
Now that you've played the Banjo trilogy.
Do you think it would be good to come back in the form of a "Mega Remake"?
The 3 games together as if it were a great open world, obviously following the original story but with small twists.
Y E S !
Never thought I'd see someone reference Steins;Gate in a Banjo-Kazooie video. And the fact it's Exo talking about it makes it all the better.
I was just playing this game when this came out
I really wish that we get Rare Replay on the Switch. And a new Banjo game by some fresh talent who can do the originals justice.
Late I know, but congratulations on your weight loss. You look good.
Remake or Rebreak: Battle For Bikini Bottom Original vs Rehydrated?
Score is too obvious
Just wait till he does resident Evil remakes and cross platforms all around
The Eighth Gen version of RE4 is the worst version because it's basically the GC version, except they cleaned up the textures. However, what they didnt do, was update the textures. The shitty textures that the blurriness in the Sixth gen version of the game was covering up.
7:20 Man I still need to rewatch the 4K remaster of Steins;Gate. That show was incredible. Even for a show based on a visual novel.
"I lost forty pounds"
Nah, you just lost a c in thicc
Now he has to lose the other C and then replace it with an N.
@@rotundmonibuv5103 Nah, he just has to replace all those letters with f, i and t
He's back.
22:22 Digital Eclipse?
That's cool!
You look great dude, congrats on the weight loss!
Consistent schedules? Who needs those?
Nice from,Gabe!
YEAH A VIDEO AFTER 3 MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Omg that cat is precious!
19:37 it was also in the GBC version, though it was called Crankey's Fishing.
1:16 Oh my god. I love them.
Interesting thing about this game, it was originally going to have 6 to 7 worlds not including the Hub. They were taken out due to, "Storage Limitations." There's a playable beta build of this game out on the internet which I assume was from late 2002 or early 2003 because it looks a lot closer to the final's graphics then the e3 2001 version which you can watch a some footage somewhere on CZcams. The biggest difference in the released beta from what I can assume is from late 2002 from the final is that Freezing Furnace was originally split into 2 levels called Freezing Fjord which was going to be the 4th world and Fiery Furnace which was going to be the 6th world. It's kind of a shame that it didn't make it to the final because those 2 sections of Freezing Furnace were going to be much more bigger and interesting. Fiery Furnace was going to have this huge machine to go inside to explore. Also there was also going to be flight in the game but was cut out due to the depth perception being confusing. On top of that, earlier in development when it was going to be a GBC game called BK Grunty's Curse, there was the 7th level called Mohendra Banjo. It was going to be the 6th level in order between Spiller's Harbor and Fiery Furnace. Luckly a group of people are remaking Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Revenge into the Banjo-Kazooie engine using Banjo's Backpack with some things from the beta that didn't quite make it to the final called BKGR Redone. Also a BK decomp is on the way so once the decomp is finished, people should hopefully be able to make some quality of life improvements to the Banjo-Kazooie engine on N64 like note and jinjo saving as well as making it more accurate to BKGR with the gameplay like the egg aim. They're also going to rework the story to make a little more sence.
Same thing in java, but worse, and from what I noticed, the weak hardware of cell phones and the size of the games being at most 4MB, is the reason for the scenarios to have less details and worse framerate, running 10 fps.
Want a decent RPG about time travel? Give "Radiant Historia" a shot. Also comes in remastered format for the 3DS.
Your kitten is adorable!
I do hope you return to series to review Nuts and Bolts some day.
I think I may have mentioned retroachievements at some point (namely in how I experienced the GBA Klonoas), but I figured it would be especially fitting here, considering I was the one who developed this game's cheevo set over there. My second full set ever, preceeded by Spyro 3 GBA and succeeded by Rocket Robot on Wheels.
hey fun fact
in the final realm of the fishing minigame you can tell witch you need to catch and what you dont need to catch by the movement
the ones you need to catch move fast and constatly slow down and speed up while the ones you dont need to catch go slowly without changing speed
That fishing mini game where they’re underwater has a clear way to tell which is a fish and which is a crab. The crabs slowly and continuously move while the fish move in bursts.
The game wasn’t too bad all things considered
I actually am glad you spoke about spyro 2: season of flame 🙂 I really enjoy that game *having beaten it along with season of ice and attack of the rhynocs, season of flame to me is easily the best spyro game on the gba, and it is the closest to matching the original trilogy* I do honestly feel that season of flame *or even all 3 gba games for that matter* are either panned, underlooked or even overlooked, maybe unappreciated even, 🙂 well played to you exo *And also, the kitty!!!!!! It looks adorable 😆😆😂🤣*
I like your videos! Could you please make some about the NSMB series (NSMBDS in particular)?
Remake or Rebrake: Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom
Don’t you mean cross platform
When rehydrated comes out maybe
I love that cat already.
I do hope you review Nurs and Bolts one day. Every review I’ve seen seems too focused on “we waited 8 years for Banjo-Threeie only to get this” rather than judging the game by its own merits
22:30 agreed it’s kind of like Spyro 3 but on a smaller screen
you have a cute kitty! I say this while wearing a headset with cat ears bolted to it.
You should do an ROR on Ratchet & Clank PS2 vs PS4
RetroGamer128 PS2 wins.
KellsKats Yeah its really no contest, R&C PS2 is a landmark in videogame storytelling melding with gameplay
Weighty Mhmm! The new one is like a child’s game. Not that children’s games can’t work... but it’s as if they made it for 4 year olds.
@@KellsKats For sure. The OG just has so much more charm, and every single last bit of it is sucked away in the remake. I hope they don't do the same thing to the sequel to be honest, since that's my favorite.
Rebreak.
congratulations
You now need to do a Xross Platform of all the versions of Rayman 2.
Good luck.
Longer than sonic unleashed
In speaking of GBA Iso platformers, another I really liked was the Tron 2.0 game on there. 2 campaigns to play through, mini games of the different vehicles from the first movie (Light cycle, Recognizer, the tank. Some of these even having basic 3D modeling) I admit a few parts have a little jank, but overall, still an overlooked as hell game.
That’s a cute siamese cat.
My grandma has a siamese cat
1:07 so is this a way of showing you will release a full version of your dithering song from the Sonic Unleashed on PS2 gag.
Dang, hope your schooling goes well!
The optional second Grunty boss with the slimes that attach to you can be beaten on Mobile. You just have to buy the ability to shake them off from Bozzeye.
Also for the high ledge in Spiller's Harbor, there is a hidden platform to the complete up-right, hidden behind where one of the notes are.
What a lovely kitten.
I got ideas for reviews you could do next after you're done with the Spyro ROR's
- 2D Metroid/Prime trilogy ROR(except Prime 3 obviously)
- Mario Galaxy 1/2
- Star Fox games
- Paper Mario games
- Sly 2 - 4
- Halo CE - Halo 3/4
Well done on the weight loss mate
this video has a cat int it.....instant 10,000 views XD
I have an idea for a series port or poop which is a series where you review a port of a game and see if it's good or bad
Give it to EPG to be the one to compliment Other M on something!
Exo does a disturbingly good Ripto impression
15:00 in defense of the split up pad I doubt the N64 processor would be able to handle Banjo and Kazooie being split up at any time and keeping track of their constantly changing positions. And adding it to the 360 version would've broken the difficulty and stage design
