  • It's time for moar Korben. Today, we look at one of the most beloved entries in the series, Kirby Super Star for the Super Nintendo and Kirby Super Star Ultra on the Nintendo DS. It's time to test out my new DS capture device. I'm still kind of working out the kinks, but I think it looks pretty good.

    Remake or Rebreak Scores:
    1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as the original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc. A virtually worthless remake/port overall.
    2- Re-Meh: Not as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still very playable. Additionally, a Re-Meh may not address the original's salient issues or fail to add anything meaningful.
    3- Remake: As good or even slightly better than the original, but not necessarily worth playing if you already own that version. Typically adds some new content or fixes salient issues with the original.
    4- Replace: A remake/port that changes, fixes, and adds so much that it renders the original virtually obsolete. A Replace not only faithfully recreates the original, but fixes most (if not all) of the original's issues and adds a sizable amount of new content.

    Correction. I participate in the Kirby community more than probably anyone. I am even member of the WiKirby team.
    And I can confidently say that pretty much everyone likes Ultra better. It is probably one of the only remakes that people like better than the original. Ultra was the origin of a lot of fan-favorite characters such as Galacta Knight, Masked Dedede, Bandana Dee, and Marx-Soul.

      *High fives* The trick to using Mirror in Kirby Super Star Ultra's True Arena is to keep on guard most of the time. Due to Mirror's shield, it helps by getting rid of the small damage most True Arena boss hits give on a regular guard. Mirror's shield can also come in handy by reflecting projectiles, which can beat Mid-bosses in seconds, and make Galacta Knight's fight considerably easier by causing him to hit himself.

      *_"If someone disagrees with me it's probably just nostalgia. There's no denying the correctness of my opinion."_*
      Get out of here with that garbage. I played Ultra first, and I've played Ultra far more, but I prefer the original.
      The presentation in Super Star is all around superior, with much higher audio quality, the sprites being far more expressive (though not as well animated), the cutscenes not being low quality FMVs, and there being a lot of animated background elements bringing the environments to life which aren't present in the remake. It's just more appealing to look at and listen to overall.
      Also, Capsule J, Bounder, and the original design for Wham Bam Rock are superior to their replacements.
      And then there's a whole bunch of minor gameplay tweaks that altogether make things easier in Ultra. To a fault, I would say.
      Just to give one example, if a boss or miniboss slams the ground to make stars pop out, the stars do not hurt you in Ultra, but they do in Super Star. There are tons of little changes like this affecting every aspect of the game. It's significant enough that Marx Soul is easier than Marx in Super Star if you ask me, which is just stupid.
      The new content Ultra brings to the table is alright, but only Revenge of the King had any effort put into it at all, and even that sub-game is somewhat lazy, consisting almost entirely of rehashed content.
      When I look at what they could have done with Ultra (I've heard they considered adding new abilities but decided against it to be more faithful to the original, and they could have brought to life the interesting sounding Kagero Mansion sub-game planned to be in the original but cut due to limited time and resources), and instead they give me content like a mode where I replay every level with no changes outside of the last boss other than that I'm playing as Meta Knight, it's more than a little disappointing, I gotta say.
      Hell, I'd almost prefer Meta Knightmare Ultra wasn't included at all, but that's probably mostly because I just don't like using Sword in Super Star.
      Also, Kirby Super Star Ultra didn't just come out. It's a decade old, my dude. I'm sure there are tons of people that grew up with the remake (you were about 8 when it released, for instance) and/or played the remake well before they ever played the original, if they've ever even played the original at all.
      Nostalgia is totally liable to be a reason for preferring one version to the other for *BOTH* versions of the game, *NOT* just the original.

  • @ahbeef
    @ahbeef Před 7 lety +231

    Kirby Super Star Ultra is my absolute favorite game of all time. In my opinion, it improves upon the original in every single aspect and comes just about as close to flawless as it gets for a 2D platformer. I really don't get the arguments for the original being better, but I guess that's all just subjective. Anyway, I'm glad you see what I see in this game. It truly is a masterpiece.

    • @Thenumber1yoshi
      @Thenumber1yoshi Před 7 lety +6

      Yeah and being able to take it on the go is a plus as well. I mean the reason I got it was to have a portable version of one of the best classic Kirby games after waiting for a port of it preferably one on a Nintendo handheld not only did I get a portable Superstar but I got so much more bang for my buck due to the improvements on the original and all the new game modes, it gives me a ton of playtime on the rare occasions I end up going on a long trip to visit someone or to an appointment I mean all I have to do is replay Spring Breeze all the way up to at least Meta Knightmare Ultra if I don't feel like getting frustrated with any of the boss rush modes and even more time if I do want to play them. So it can keep me busy for a while on a trip. I do want this version on VC if only to beat the boss rush modes (especially helper to hero) more easily with Nintendo's restore points features.

      @Eltrotraw Před 7 lety +10

      ahbeef
      The only reasons I'd prefer the original over Ultra as far as I know:
      - Plasma damage is toned down because it's not as easy to charge to full
      - Bosses have more invincibility frames after being hit, feels like at least double the original, which really becomes notable after repeated Arena runs
      - Kirby bounces after dropping a fair distance down, which doesn't sound like much but it really breaks the flow if you bounce upon landing instead of breaking into a run
      - Several other abilities were altered, though these are minor nuances like wing moving slower in the air or parasol float giving you incredible horizontal speed.
      Essentially, it's the people who've been very used to the game's mechanics that don't like Ultra. As someone who can relate - I'm not a fan of the aforementioned bounce when I try quickly clearing great cave offensive - I can see where they're coming from, but understand that Ultra blows it out of the water in terms of content.

      Honestly if I didn't use restore points I'd have never beaten any of the boss rush modes in some Kirby games, I mean I beat helper to hero maybe two times, and the only reason I beat the arena in Triple deluxe is because it's less challenging than the true arena, it took me until I unlocked the arena during around Ultra's release all the way until the Wii U era before I unlocked the true arena and it took me a ton of tries to beat the true arena one time legitimately, only other boss rush I've beaten legitimately that even has a relationship to the Kirby series and on it's highest difficulty is the boss rush in Smash Bros. Brawl as Sonic, and that's only because I was really damn persistent, I honestly don't know if I could pull that off again. I only ever beat Nightmare in Dreamland's boss rush when I bought the Wii U Virtual Console version and only because I could use restore points and any other Kirby game's boss rush modes on 3DS or Wii U Virtual Console were pretty much the same case I only beat it because of Nintendo's restore point feature they added to their Virtual Console games.

      @Thenumber1yoshi Před 7 lety +1

      Actually I do use stone, it's actually Galactica Knight (or however his name is spelled) that's my main problem in the true arena, he's hard to hit and moves too fast for me to attack and then become invulnerable again, like when he shoots his rotating beam attack from his sword when he places himself in the center of the stage I can never attack him then without hurting myself as well, and when hsummons his own minions they always love to stand on top of me so that no matter how long I wait I'll have no choice but to change back into my normal stone Kirby form and take damage not to mention if Galactica Knight decides to come back while they're still there they get in the way, it's really hard to hit Galactica Knight with stone or Hammer as his pattern moves too fast for me to keep up with him making me have no clue what he's doing next and doesn't let me attack since Hammer isn't invulnerable and he moves too fast for me to attack him with Stone without taking damage, even if I do manage to beat him he leaves me with hardly any health to afford to make even the smallest mistake with Marx Soul who you fight immediately after him, and the fact you only get food that restore only small portions of your health in-between each battle meaning there's no maximum tomatoes to fully recover means he doesn't leave me with enough health to beat Marx Soul at the end of the True Arena since I'm either out of the limited health items due to other bosses damaging me or the fact that the few I have left don't give me enough health to take on Marx Soul without even the smallest mistake where I take damage completely screws me over and I end up losing to him at the end of the True Arena due to Galactica Knight doing a number on me in the battle right before Marx Soul.

People didn't know what game I was playing, but they loved to watch. The CG cutscene improvement, the new modes, music, and etc was so beautiful. I'm so happy that you put this game on the REPLACE rank.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved Revenge of Meta Knight, it's one of my favorite Kirby levels of all time. Especially with how well the stakes are implemented. Personally though the SNES version does hold a special place to me. But that's not to say the DS version isn't worthy of praise either. I prefer both equally tbh. So I can't really choose. Also Happy New Year Exo!

    Planet Robobot's True Arena was something else. Was fine with Archer (Archer's cover by pushing down is OP) until the Dedede clones camping on you, but then after okay again... until the Halberd part. Good lord... not only can you die easily in a normal way, but if you don't beat it fast enough, it'll kill you. And don't get me started on the core's final moments... had to use UFO Kirby amiibo at the end but seeing that Congratulations screen was so satisfying.

    I have to disagree with you on best Arena power to be honest. That, to me, is Plasma. Guard, spin pad, fire, win. Marx for example, can be beaten in less than a minute with that tactic and it really has no real weaknesses.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber Před 6 lety +3

      It's really a back-and-forth. Plasma is overall better but its DPS isn't as good as Hammer due to the charge time. Hammer is the go-to for speedruns due to the overall higher DPS, but it doesn't have the perfect guard or DPH of Plasma. Plasma is faster against Marx because you have so few opportunities to attack Marx to begin with.

    Omg Exoparadigmgamer you are a fantaboulous CZcams.com content maker of videos. You are the bright light of my life. Every single newest upload I race to the personal computer to boot it up only to go on CZcams.com only to hit subscriptions only to then see it and click on it and I then watch taking notes throughout. I love the moment in this video where you had fade ins, it was very snappy. I noticed that the order used for Super Star Ultra for the Nintendo DS system in 2008 is different from the old DS system border. What inspired the change of borders? The part where you said you like the meta knight game spoke out to my ears since I agreed 100%. Ultra is truly a complete replace as I remember buying it as a child human opening the box with great difficulty since DS boxes were very difficult to open, to which my nostrils were exphabulated have the smell come surging through them. I was grinning ear to ear to pop it from the game box into the DS game system by Nintendo, pressing down on it to make the cartridge go in fully to which I played like up to the moment where the face buttons broke off the DS game system. We had to use money to purchase a new one. I was thrilled but I had to begin from the start. That was until I did it anyway. Than I met exoparadigmgamer who showed me the light when he said Sonic Advance 2(DC) was better than the Decent Sonic Advance(DC) where he proved Somecallmejohnny wrong and form the Second of that minute of that hour of that day of that week of that month of that year of that decade of that century of that millennium I had proclaimed eixoparidugamgamur to be my favorite CZcams.com content creator. I really don't get why some people prefer the original over the remake. I mean, I can under why someone would prefer Mario 64 to the DS remake because they have differences that can make you prefer either version. But here, literally all the content from the original is still here unchanged. It even adds new modes. Sure you may not like them but that still doesn't take away the fact that there's only improvements not downgrades. The only reason I can see someone preferring the original is nostalgia.

    Revenge of Meta Knight, if you can count the entire thing as a soundtrack, is my favorite video game soundtrack of all time, semi-debatively. It is also a contributing helper in why I love it way too much and play it pretty much every time I re-open either version.
    Oh, since you clicked "read more", fun fact: Supposedly that ending for Revenge of Meta Knight was based off of "the ending" to Lupin the Third. It's an anime and therefore I've hardly seen anything of it, but I checked and it seems to be not the true ending to it, but the ending used in episodes ending at a cliffhanger.

    Glad to see you finally tackle this game. _Super Star_ was the third _Kirby_ I played, and the one that cemented my love for the series as a whole.
    Anyway, something that I noticed while playing _Ultra_ is that some of the abilities have actually been buffed or nerfed. For example, Plasma has a longer charge time in the remake, while Hammer has actually been buffed. (Compare the Hammer Flip abilities in the original and remake, and tell me if it doesn't feel easier to connect in _Ultra_.)
    Fantastic episode, and I look forward to your review of _Super Mario 64_.

      Well, that's not really a hard one, the DS version have more contents, the cinematics of the PS1 version and a better translation

      Hum... yeah there was? Final Fantasy Chronicles, a compilation of Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger, released on the PS1 in 2001 in the US, or simply Chrono Trigger, released in 1999 only in Japan on PS1.

      YA KNOW, CHRONO TRIGGER FOR THE DS IS SIMILAR TO KIRBY SUPER STAR ULTRA BY THE FACT THAT THE MUSIC IN THE DS VERSIONS SOUNDS/IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE MUSIC FROM THE SNES VERSIONS, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME SOUNDS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT.

    I've recently been binge watching your ROR series. I really enjoy it and it's quite unique. One thing I'd throw in for this particular comparison in favor of the original SNES version is how easy it is to drop in and drop out with the 2nd player. Just thought i'd throw my thoughts in. Keep up the great work.

    I haven't gotten around to playing the re-ports of Super Star, but that's my first time hearing about the color downgrade. That really sucks that they couldn't get a perfect emulation, apparently. Does anyone know if the version on Kirby's Dream Collection (which came out at the very end of the Wii's lifespan) the exact same as the Wii Virtual Console's, or did they manage to fix the issue? How about the WiiU Virtual Console version?
    I agree that Ultra seems to improve upon the original in almost every single way (it even makes a nice attempt to satisfy purists by including the original sprite cutscenes as unlockable extras). Still, I wouldn't wanna dump the original completely, if only for nostalgic value. Not just the better SNES sound quality, but the original sprites, backgrounds, and the little things like those season hearts being four separate treasures is all stuff I grew up with. That said, I was relieved to see that Nintendo still eventually gave it a VC release in spite of the remake existing (moreso since it's an SNES game that uses battery back-up, which I think are the absolute most in need of modern-day re-releases). Ironically, Ultra now seems a bit outdated as it requires tracking down a copy for a last-generation system and no (official) digital release to speak of. Kinda makes me wish that Ultra would get a Virtual Console release on the WiiU, but fortunately for now, 3DS is backwards compatible with the DS (though that might get cut off with the release of the Switch).
    As an aside, I really liked Dreamland 3, and feel it's way too overshadowed by Super Star. True, the abilities are static, but I really loved the way you could mix and match with the animal friends, who both returned from Dreamland 2 and got expanded upon with three extra allies (I really wish those guys would make a comeback). 100% completion also made for some interesting puzzles, the artstyle was nicely unique, and hot damn, did I love that credit roll at the end and its heavenly soundtrack. I understand if the majority thought Super Star was an overall better game, but I just wish a bit more attention would be given to this worthy swan song to one of the best game systems of all time.

      Oh I have a greater appreciation for Dreamland 3 well personally I like all the games in the Dark Matter Saga/Trilogy as it's called, I mean it's pretty much the only time in the Kirby series where the same threat came back consistently for the final boss, I mean the Dark Matter threat spanned three games from Dreamland 2 to Kirby 64, to me that really made me feel like it was somewhat of an overarching story, I wouldn't mind the Kirby series doing that with another villain bringing it back for a couple consistent games as it's threat continues to grow stronger, it doesn't have to necessarily be Dark Matter again but I wouldn't want it being in every game just what they did, having the threat get bigger each game culminating in a fight against what was essentially it's "soul" form (because let's be honest that's what 02 actually was) in the final game it appears in and then ending it there.

    Glad the button layout thing at 10:19 was addressed, always thought that was just a me issue. Seriously ended up making a custom joycon button mapping for the Original on Switch’s online service.
