  • This podcast is all about whether the clay bar...is dead. A bold statement -- and a worthy debate. What say you?
    Yvan and Nick discuss our "clay towel," which is actually called the Perforated Synthetic Decontamination Towel. What is it, why do we use it -- and what's the best way to store it? Can it replace a clay bar entirely??? What are your preferred methods for decontaminating paint?
    You can find the decontamination towel here: bit.ly/FineGradeClayTowel

    Both!! I just used the Towel today on my grandmas Buick and it turned out amazing. The last 80 degree day had to get a wash/decon/protect for her. She lives in the city and only has a car port. The fall out and contamination was really heavy and she never drives any more. The weird thing is after Iron remover/towel it made the paint bead and sheet again on one side. So it had to be coated at the dealer bc I've never protected it.

      After washing just pre spray the panel with Rinseless, then use Rinseless Wash in a bucket (diluted 256:1), with towel in there, and use the Rinseless Wash as your "clay lube" so take the towel out of the bucket and no pressure, folded towel, on the wet panel. when done go ahead and dry with something like Ceramic Gloss as a drying aid. Im not a big fan of traditional clay bars today as they are abrasive and they hang on to everything. Whilst rubber polymer clay towels and mitts dont seem to make the paint as smooth as a bar, the marring from most clays are a pita. What are your thoughts of kaopolite sf powder to make a liquid clay like the diamondite spray clay from 2006? i have 2kg of kaopolite sf powder in my garage to make a liquid clay. It may still be abrasive and marr so maybe not the way to go. I prefer removing the iron before i use a towel. Pure personal choice. In the future we need a coating that repels fallout like two magnets repelling each other so we dont get any but thats something probably decades away or never possible. Its easily removable with chemicals anyway

    • @diydetailofficial
      @diydetailofficial  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The koapolite powder you have is quite abrasive. Iron removers actually do not remove the iron particles , but the rust stains. Most coatings are actually resistant to fall out, but the metal particles from brakes actually melt the clear coat slightly.

    The only claybars I ever liked are Japanese patented gray variety. I used synthetic an was like ohhh these bars are terrible at removing grit on paint. I don’t believe if a claybar is dropped on the ground it’s no longer usable as other people make this out to be always the case. The claybar has to be sitting on that surface for a while a the weight of the bar embeds the debris. The user of the claybar has to be quick an never work on a dirty shop floor. That’s also key to keeping the shop floor regularly clean. A clay bar can scratch the paint which is true on soft painted surfaces it’s best to test a small area to not go swiping the surfaces especially an unfamiliar vehicle.

      Yyan / Nick, Can we buy this Devon towel in New Zealand? The CarCare Co in Australia do not service orders from New Zealand.

    Yet to watch the video but clay bars have never made sense to me. They say you can clay 4 or 5 cars with a clay bar. So, you are going to drag all the debris and crap of the 3 or 4 previous cars over the current car and that's supposed to help the paintwork? Clay towels have always been superior. And now to watch the video...

    The word Clay towel is very misleading. If this towel does not have any clay or chemicals to remove embedded particles, i find it hard to believe that anything is being removed because of the waffle structure. I wish another reputable car detailer would comment on its use. Sorry to be so pessimistic.

      Synthetic “clay” towels have been available for over 15 years. The term “clay towel “ is the industry accepted terminology for a Perforated Synthetic Decontamination Towel. Read the other comments of this video, many thousands of people are very satisfied with it.

      I thought the same thing until I tried synthetic clay but it actually works and they aren't the first company to sell it... Personally, I enjoy clay bars just because I've been using them for so long. Try it for yourself, it's not like they are asking you to spend 100k, it's cheap .
