A timely message for me. My husband and I have been trying to buy an acreage for years and it just hasn’t happened yet. It’s hard having the vision, desiring it so deeply for your family (we have four little kids) and just sitting in the wait. An acreage is coming available this Fall, we have talked with the owners, and we are so hopeful that we will be able to afford it and that they will choose us to sell it to! Trying to trust God and be content with where He has us in this season living in town.

      Praying for you!
Just want to give you hope. Hubby and I, plus 3 boys over time, have lived in a RV for 12 years.
We kept dreaming of a homestead but we traveled for his work and the land we stayed on between jobs technically doesn’t belong to anyone and if his mother dies we loose legal access, plus it’s not a safe neighborhood anymore.
Well, in 2020 hubby lost his career due to the shutdown. We had to rely on a food bank, with only our allergy foods to survive (thankfully none of us are anaphylactic). We were without an income for 10 months until the only job offer came was in the type of work he did the decade before we married, which doe not pay well for low level employees. We managed to get the first paycheck the week we were going to be spending our last penny. I had prayed that we would go to church if hubby could get a job (he high was a challenge due to hubby not being a believer, so we started with listening to sermons from the church I wanted to attend).
The company still didn’t pay enough for us to buy groceries but all the bills were covered. Almost immediately my husband was getting signs from God that he was supposed to learn the business while working there and was supposed to open his own equipment rental store in our county, which hadn’t had one since his old bosses retired after he quit. He had customers from our area recognizing him and begging him to open one, plus he saw the greed and abuse the other company was causing. Families weren’t able to finish projects due to the high costs and extra lies the owners were doing to steal their money.
During this time, through hearing the sermons while we waited at the food bank and my new commitment to letting God lead, including being convicted to wear a head covering as a symbol of that commitment, hubby started to not only believe in God but that God cares about us and our prayers. He started to realize that God wanted him to open an rental store and prayed for a specific sign to know when to quit his job and take the leap of faith. He had no clue how it was going to happen due to our financial situation but he went ahead and spent the tiny savings we had and registered the company name under and LLC. (We had no clue this timing would be so important in the future.)
About 10 months after he got the job he prayed for any sign that Jesus was real. Within a minute the sign we had been praying for all year for him to quit and open the rental store showed up. A couple hours later my husband committed himself to Jesus and asked Holy Spirit to come into his heart. As soon as he said that prayer he saw what he believes was a star dying. It did a specific bright flash pattern. He ran in and grabbed our son and telescope to verify it wasn’t a plane. They both saw the light go out. Then immediately after that a lightning bug landed in my son’s hand and did what appeared to be the same flash pattern as the star before going out and flying off. This was a Sunday evening. The next morning was a holiday, so he didn’t have work. I told him that he needed to quit the next day, because that was what he prayed for. The next day he went in but didn’t quit, instead tried to figure out how to get a business loan (though we had tried for credit cards and loans over the year with zero ability due to the lack of income). When he went in on Wednesday he had the only blackout in episode of his life, like God took over his body and he packed all his tools and didn’t realize what he was doing until the owner ran in front of his car to stop him. When he was asked what he was doing, he looked around confused and said, “I guess I’m quitting.” He started driving home before pulling over crying (only the 3rd time ever in 20 years together) because he knew we needed to trust God but was afraid because we only had $10 on the bank.
His boss ended up calling and finally offering the pay we had been asking for to cover all expenses and hubby bravely said, “No.” that night we got a call with an gift for 2 months of rent to start the shop and 2 loans were approved. We had the money to start and had the shop opened in a month.
The following year was my year of faith to have my VBA2C, since I needed all the scar tissue covering my abdomen, closing off half my uterus, and a rotated tailbone all healed (they cause my second birth to be 4 days, with 12 hours of pushing and him stuck at the exit point for 9 hours resulting in another c-section that the anesthesia didn’t work, which caused even more scar tissue adhesions). Hubby caught the baby 5 minutes from home in the backseat of our truck without me ever having to push and no pain during the actual birth.
Shortly after that miracle we both had a feeling we were going to be moving but had no clue how because we were still paying off debt and the only money saved was for business winter bills. We kept looking at houses and chugging away at debt. Hubby kept putting away money for winter because there are usually 2 months with almost no rentals. He kept having this feeling about this one house, with horrible pictures, 30 acres, and a budget double what we could afford if our current debts were gone. I kept having a feeling the house would come during winter, though I had no clue how but kept having faith and praying. We tried talking to several banks and mortgage companies and most refused to work with us due to the LLC being our only income or would offer less than the cheapest shack in our county, no land.
I was listening to a homeschool podcast that always has specific homeschool sponsors; however, land.com was sponsoring one day and it caught my attention. Hubby and I hadn’t heard of it. I looked it up and typed in our county. The house that hubby had been obsessed with was the top on the list at half price and decent pictures. He called to verify and the website was the only one to have updated the new listing and we were the second yo want to view it in a year. We contacted ChurchHill Mortgage through Dave Ramsey and they were immediately willing to work with us (the LLC timing was key with this). The property just felt like home, despite the house being set in 1973 still and a major fixer upper (hubby just replaced subfloors this weekend). We had just enough in the business winter fund to have a down payment and we’re making the last of our debt payments while in the process of the loan. We got the property at half price and basically the house for free and the deal was done in 28 days for us to move in Christmas Day. It’s in good enough shape to live in while repairing it and has every single thing we had ever dreamed or prayed for (lake, hidden creek we found exploring the woods, stained glass window, barn, wells, screened in porch, library, wood fireplace with petrified wood and crystals, place to store my canning, fenced in yard, wildflower fields, etc.).
So, all that to say that you never know what parts of your past will lead to the miracle of your future. Just keep faith, ask for a specific sign and for guidance with the right helpers, and use the Bible during your time of waiting.

I always feel inspired by your videos.
We began watching videos of off grid with Doug and Stacy in 2017.
That fed the dream to build a homestead, and so it began.
We were blessed with 5 acres in a rural area.
    The house was totally dilapidated.
We chose to purchase a tiny home shell.
    It has been a journey.
Praise be to God that alot of progress has been made.
I do get stuck on what we haven't accomplished and fail to see how far we have come.
We have chickens, pigs, and a large area to someday raise sheep for meat...if the Lord wills...and diary goats.
Praise be to God that we are in this season and continue to strive to move forward and delight in the beauty of every season.

I love that you mentioned God always meets your needs even if it's not what you think. My husband and I purchased our first home in 2022 (age 24 &25). Of course we wanted beautiful granite counters and pristine stainless steel fixtures and luxury flooring, and tall ceilings. What we got was a 1980s Ugly home that check all our boxes 😂 we wanted a 3 bed, 2 bath and at least something covered for a car. We got the bonus of a 2 car garage and a front and back yard and the seller was a sweet 74 year old man that paid his personal handy man to make all the repairs we requested despite listing the house "SOLD AS IS". I think once he saw 2 kids were buying it, he wanted to help. And it ended up being 20k less that our budget so maintaince is SUPER affordable. Over the 2 years we've lived here, we've painted doors, trim, cabinets, added pictures to the walls and decor and burn candles, and plan to replace the floors soon. That ugly little house I was bitter about buying is now HOME and our friends often tell us how cozy and cute it is. ❤

The estate sale things is so true!
My dad keeps going to them for my husband and I. He will randomly call or text to see if we are interested in what he found for our new homestead (we have previously lived in a RV for 12 years, so we didn’t even have furniture).
The elderly couple behind my parents had to leave behind most of their belongings and their children gave us a huge amount for free so they could get the house emptied over the weekend and put up for sale (they needed the house sold so the kids could buy their own homestead here in Texas and move away from California, plus the kids said the house belongings were making everyone sadder about the memories with their dad and they didn’t intend to come back to the area). My parents also bought their golf cart to help them with expenses, despite them trying to give it away.
We were blessed with a propane grill, glass herb tables, glass patio table with umbrella, metal outdoor chairs, a large metal shelving unit, an antique lamp, old history books, and my parents gifted us their old golf cart.
We had family gift us with their old couches and a 1983 king sized bed frame with storage headboard because they wanted a more modern design. Our house is from 1973 and we are leaning into that.

A small trailer, 2 church parsonage and in our 3rd own home. All that to say that I have had to learn how to make very different places "home." It has been fun and all but one without the use of Pinterest...but I did have a few magazines. Being content with what God provided was a great lesson. Our first apartment was furnished from my in-laws basement and my grandparents upstairs. I still have furniture that was given to us through the years and I love making it into a comfortable home setting.

We just recently bought a manufactured home as well, and it is such a blessing! We would never have been able to afford a house this size (1790!) and it's on an acre of land. It does have neighbors closer than we would like, but that's what trees and bushes are for.
I, too, would love a cottage or New England style home, but I feel so blessed with this one, and my siblings commented on how homey it feels. I've decorated as cottagecore before it had a label.
I wish I could have an open pantry like yours, but my toddlers would have a hey day! Maybe you could do a house tour or living room/kitchen tour.

It's an online auction website, every state has their own and its a great option for finding old beautiful things (depending on where you live, some deals are better than other places). There's a bit of a learning curve to it, but if you set limits on how high your willing to go on something ahead of time it works and saves you a lot of money.

My brother-in-law owns farm land that borders 2 edges of the property, and has given us permission to pick rocks (which there is an abundance of) and I've been using those to edge the flower beds. I just started the video and already have to comment to say, I love the Louisa May Alcott quote! This is the second quote of hers that I’ve seen today and I find them to be so encouraging and inspirational.
We have been blessed to have a large covered patio off the back of our house and back door. Today as I was moving plants out for hardening off, I had one of those moments where I was looking at the mess and started wondering if I could move the space up on the list to clean, organize and simply make more useable and enjoyable. I had decided that other things needed to take priority. However, I’m going to present some ideas to my husband and see what he would like to tackle this weekend.
Great video Kelli, you are a joy and a blessing. Have a lovely weekend.

@@homewithkelli So, it turns out that although we didn’t tackle the patio, we did make huge progress in the garden shed! It also was down the list. I told my hubby what had gone thru my mind and how ultimately I had thought that the shed needed to be cleaned out etc so all the garden related stuff on the patio had a space to go into the shed. In the end he thought he could at least get the shelving up. Well, the shelving going up meant taking out a lot of stuff and shifting things to new ‘piles’ etc. In the end we made some amazing progress in the shed but nothing on the patio. When that day becomes available I’ll have space to move around and to put stuff away! So, your video did inspire progress to put a dent in the ugly in productive space called a shed and I’m excited to have a chance to turn my attention to that patio soon!

We live in a little 1950’s house in a low income neighborhood and I’ve definitely had comparison issues before. I’ve been embarrassed to invite other moms with kids over in the past due to that. But God has also showed me the blessings of living here and learning to love and care for what we have right now. It’s actually fun being creative and resourceful. Right now I’m remodeling a used vanity that we got for only $60. One of its size would be well over $300 new so even though it’s tedious to fix it up, I’m thankful for the opportunity. I’m incredibly grateful to be home with my children and be a homemaker as well.

Amen, it really is fun to be creative and gives you an eye to see beauty in things others wouldn't! So amazing that you got the vanity for only $60, I bet it's going to be gorgeous and what an heirloom to have, so special!

This video was such an encouragement to me! My husband and I are getting ready to sell our 3,200sf home to live in a single wide trailer so we can be 100% debt free and be more kingdom minded. Most people we know think we’ve lost our minds. Hearing you talk about knowing what your definition of success is and that it’s completely different from the world’s definition really helped me. I’ve been struggling with feeling the need to over explain why we’re doing what we’re doing bc I have a fear of people judging me. What I need to remember is that our definition of success is different than theirs. Therefore I don’t need to explain and I don’t need their approval. We will make our new home a loving, Christ centered place and that’s all that matters. ❤

Also I loved that you uncovered the brick path because i remember doing that on our old farm as a child and i felt like i had discovered the secret garden!🤭

Love the inspiration and creation especially the wood stick trellis! I built a garden table using two old wooden sawhorses as end legs and screwed boards to the top to create a counter space and boards under across the bottom sawhorses supports to create a shelf to hold pots. I also found an old small white porcelain sink and cut it into the counter top, ran a hose up through the “faucet holes” and secured it with a spray hose attachment (like in your kitchen). Now I have water when I turn on the hose spigot. I put a bucket under the drain hole to catch the water and use it to water the garden. Lastly I found an old single kitchen cabinet and screwed it to the top and the side of the house (don’t they my husband…lol) and store my garden supplies, gloves, plant food etc. Having that gives me the motivation to garden. We also rent and have done all of this including raised garden beds. In one sense no one “owns” anything. We either pay rent, mortgage or taxes. We are stewards not owners. When we die we don’t take it with us. Beautifying your surroundings benefits everyone. God Bless you Kelli and you words of wisdom!!

I wouldn't trade our "poor" first years of marriage. Forced me into things I never would have thought to try; canning, gardening, sewing, etc. because I was focused on saving money. I either had to make it or go wothout. Now I do it for saving money sake AND because I enjoy it.

My husband & I actually get along much better, & are happier, when we are flat broke. i think it is because we have to work together as a team in order to accomplish things, instead of just solving our 'problems' with $$$$. When he has taken jobs that make a significant higher wage, we fight like cats & dogs for the first year. When there is NO $, neither person ever gets what they want. But it seems like when there is more $, one person 'wants' more than they need & it is never the same 'want' as the other. & I am like you; being poor taught me to be resourceful & industrious. If I wanted it, I had to make it. Now it is just a habit.

Very timely and thoughtful message, thank you so much for putting it out there. My husband and I have been renting the same little apartment since we got married 3 years ago. We now have a 2 year old son with another baby on the way. Our goal from the beginning was to buy a house but it just hasn’t panned out. With each passing year it feels more impossible and this little apartment (for which at one point I was so grateful) is feeling more and more cramped as our family grows. We all sleep in the same bed. I have reduced my hours at work so as to be home most of the time with our toddler but with the pressure of getting a house we have been talking about me going back to work again full time. It’s rough and I’m feeling down about it, especially with it feeling like everyone else in our community can somehow magically afford to own a home AND live off of just the husband’s income. Please pray for us.
