Youth Referees Say Angry Parents Make Their Jobs Undesirable

- These referees want to make sure that their game is still fun. Charlie Tygard is a youth basketball coach and says he wishes some parents would realize that teaching kids the fundamentals of the game is more important than winning. Unfortunately, he says he’s been confronted by angry moms and dads over calls he’s made on the court. Donovan Smith is a student athlete and a referee who has also faced off with competitive parents. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.
Parents need to chill out and enjoy the process of seeing their kids grow as players and human beings. Cheers to that guy and his assistant!
🎉👏🎊🏀
Well said 👍
Parents act like monsters when their kids don't win and then they act confused when their kids don't wanna try anything new.
Well to be fair the referees I had in football turn their back during a fight the kid was grabbing the kids helmet and bashing in the ground we all yelled at the referee to notify him and he turned around and shrugged it off another one during lacrosse allowed highschooler to compete with middle schoolers. We had many calls ignored and jeopardizing the safety of our team. We even had to report one ref a few times because it was getting out of hand.
@@chinookh4713 They’re obviously talking about parents mad about their kids losing and going overboard
Parents need to stop pushing kids to win all the time. Parents would lose it if they dealt with that at work.
This is the stupidest advice I’ve heard this year congrats 🎉
@@cadds8055 don't forget your entire life, that's pretty stupid too.
@@xst298 lol
It’s good to push kids to win, but parents should teach kids that losing is ok and it’s part of learning process
@@cadds8055 hypocrite alert
Soccer ref of 5 years here. From personal insults to death threats in KIDS games, I've had to eject more parents than I can even count. And sometimes I feel it's worse than the talk I get in more higher level ADULT games...
Wow crazy
Yeah, as a football player myself it gets very emotional, way more than any other sport. I still try and respect the referees as much as I can, and thank them after the game
My younger sister had a soccer tournament a couple of years ago that was called off in the semifinals cause a brawl started between refs and parents over a bad call... This was a game between 9 year olds.
@@joshuacervone3639 🤣🤣🤣 pathetic. Sports don’t even matter in the grand scheme of things
Angry parents at sports games ruin the fun for everyone.
And yet they wonder why their kid don’t want to play sport anymore or quit the team all the sudden 😑😒
@@C.V.20 right I would be so embarrassed
I worked as a soccer referee when I was about 12-14 years old. Parents were RUTHLESS. I was only refereering rec (not competitive or travel soccer) and would still yell horrible things at me. One game, I had to kick a parent off the field bc he threatened to beat me up in the parking lot after the game. I was 13 at the time. People need to chill.
Wow man I hope your doing great !
Growing up, my dad was one of those “parents” 😬 beyond embarrassing. It’s literally just a game.
I wish some of these parents would see how you felt about it. There comes a time in every child's life when they realize their parents aren't perfect and I bet there's a lot of kids who figure this out when they see grown adults behaving the way they do over a stupid game.
Same here expect he would would blame everything on me. Often times he even tells my coach to sub me, and other players on my team make fun of me for this.
@@Mihariy Good grief. Good thing you recognize it's not about making your own child feel bad or anyone else. It's the last thing you'd probably ever do to another because of how it feels.
😆
Parents who get mad to referees all the time is just useless.
Parents that failed as youth athletes, forcing their dreams onto their kids.
Imagine threatening a person over a cheap $15 trophy
Nah a ref at my school got death threats for ignoring a fight he literally turned around and shrugged it off. Another Ref ruined an entire game and it the same guy every year he legit a soccer ref and we complained about him using the wrong rules.
@@chinookh4713 Okay none of that means you threaten the ref tho like that’s unrelated.
This referee isn't doing anything wrong. I respect this guy,
Parents trying to live through their children make their own failures so obvious 😂😂😂
My friend went to see her six-year-old son play, and witnessed the opponent team parents and coach aggressively confronting the referee during the game. Unbelievable.
I was a umpire from 2008-2011 for Youth league in West Palm Beach along with Kid-pitch and oh boy did I have my fair share of run-ins on and off the field with parents. I was a juvenile doing it as a gig after high school. It was so bad in 2010 that our field had to erect a no tolerance policy for outrageous behavior. I wasn't the only one getting battered, it was all 9 of us. Late 2011 I was going off to college anyways but the second to last game a guy followed me into the parking lot at night when the game was done and that was it for me. Didn't even finish the last playoff game. This was over a decade ago though and its seemingly a tiny bit better but there is so much work to do. Got to think of the kids and the parent's pride gets in the way.
Same all it took for me was one weekend of umpiring a tournament at a famous sports complex in Delaware lol parents made it absolutely brutal!! No respect at all.
Thanks for being a ref man!! Sorry that happens, when I was younger in Canada 🇨🇦 I always thanked the refs at every game! But that was back in the early 90’s. It’s not easy but I knew all the refs and they knew us because we treated them kindly! Seems more like modern thing!
I umpired in a youth league when i was 14 and i ended up getting a bat thrown at me by a parent because i called his kid out. He ended up being arrested and charged with assault.
What’s an umpire? Sorry I’m a footy fan so I don’t know
@@seanynwa6975 No worries, its like a referee for Baseball in a crude way. They call pitch by pitch and plays around the plate. They more or less officiate the game.
I get that parents want to always support their child but sometimes it’s best to leave it to the ref, they always know the best.
Tbh most parents don't seem to care if their child is having fun or not, all they care about is if their child brings home a trophy so they can boost their egos by having a kid that's good at sports.
Or they'll cheat their kids way into college. There's a lot of lousy parenting going on.
i grew up playing organized sports all throughout my life from childhood to teens years to even still now in my 20s and i remember how annoying some of the parents would be in the stands when i was a kid and yes refs make mistakes but thats just part of the game they're human it's bound to happen just let kids play and stop trying to interfere trust me it makes the game less fun for the kids which is the whole point of being there to have fun
Our soccer coach always told us not to worry about winning as much she said it better if we play as a team that is important God bless her
I used to umpire when I was 12-14 years old. I liked it for the most part; but the parents sucked. The girls were 8-10 years old and were still learning the fundamentals. I was trying my best to "widen" the strike zone, especially because most of the pitches weren't in the strike zone, and the parents would yell at me for not calling strikes. I would get yelled at by the coaches too.
Parents cannot expect there children to win all the time. Just enjoy them growing and improving.
My view on the issue is, if a parent really cares about their kid, they won't embarrass them in front of everyone and instead just let them play and learn.
My dad used to call me out during soccer games and people would make fun of me for that
Imagine that. Parents trying to live out their failed dreams thru their children. Get a life. Move on!
I also referee for a youth basketball league and sometimes the coaches and parents can be a terrible but lucky I haven’t ejected someone or called the police yet but hopefully that won’t happen
Can they fine the parents or something? Hitting them in the pocket book may get their attention.
Why isn't there a zero tolerance for anyone who disrupts the game and automatic ejection from the arena? It's not complicated. They need to stop appeasing bad behavior.
To a fellow bball offical keep it up, same here ive had to warn coaches luckly they've been chill lol
As a parent myself i use to get very very angry. The older ref has a punchable face, so i may have bitten. But i worked through anger management and now. Its better for the children to have fun and teach positive behaviour
Thank goodness I had sense enough not to have kids ‼️
@@SUGAR_XYLER oh, yes you have so much sense to be persuaded by CZcams videos. Congrats, failure.
Calm down tough guy.
That’s so sad. I played in my cities basketball league all through elementary school to high school. I loved my referees! We always joked around and said hi to each other. They really deserve a lot of respect.
Refs need more respect in sports they make mistakes it’s ok just respect them 💯
Thank you someone said it. Don't bully others as adult or you'll continue a horrible cycle.
Because these parents see their kids as cash money for the future. That's why. And don't care about their kids happiness. Imagine what it's like behind closed doors.
👍
1000%
Parents nowadays SUCK
This is the times parents should be cheering instead of being angry.Let the kids enjoy.
Soccer is the worse sport for parents vs refs. I refereed one season and I would never do it again.
It's so bad, there's radio ads begging parents to act like they got some damn sense 🤦🏾♀️. Adults can absolutely do better
When I played on my school’s basketball team the refs were never yelled at by parents. Normally just by coaches. Still pretty rough though. My coach was very polite and understanding to the new refs but the ones who have been doing it for a long time? He did not hold back.
As a young soccer referee this is very true. I have been called many names in games as young as third grade soccer games by parents
Parents always gotta ruin everything in youth sports. Just let the kids have fun.
Great job
And you see, this is what their children see so they mimic their behavior when they have kids on their own and so on and on. Its an endless cycle
Some of these angry parents should be forced to do community service.....as referees!
We need more refs like this honestly.
Karen's and Kevin's gone wild!
Parents…what do they know about what their kids want?
Huge shortage right now. I have assignors emailing me left and right for games.
When parents act much less mature then their children smh
This also has happened in hockey.
I had this ref one time that started a fight in the crowd and they had to kick everyone out
not just basketball, other sports too
Parents act like if their child is going to be drafted into the NFL or NBA calm down no one is going to be drafted today!
Well this situation it's not all that new🤔
Don't you see my kids need to get an Olympic Medal?? These trophy shelves ain't gonna fill themselves...
That kid with the orange hoodie must be tough to defend.
Imagine being around pageant moms 🥴
Ngl its always the parents, sometimes they can ruin the fun for anything.
I bet it can be really annoying.
Imagine being so insecure that u need a little league trophy to feel good about urself
Well, the generation of participation trophies is grown up.
@@Marky-Mark1337 do you know how dumb what you said just was? Ban badly behaved parents from games.
Winning and losing is important on every level… it’s a competition smh
I’m just completely baffled as to why they don’t hire security or a police detail for these type of situations
Lol I'd be the angry dad yelling at the refs
'Merca, am I right? Good job
He looks like my grandfather
Any confrontation with a referee should be an automatic ban from all games.
Why can't you throw the parents out for misbehaving like you would a player?
And the sad part is 99% of those kids will never be an athlete
LMAOOO $30 PER GAME, and they're complaining
I used to officiate a few 100 matches a year. I just stopped doing youth matches..i only take adult/high school/NIOSA college
All those lousy parents trying to live vicariously through their kids…
I have been reffing for over 5 years. I’ve had to end games early because of angry parents and coaches. Nearly fought a few of them along the way. They need to chill. Their team/kid probably sucks anyways
I agree but when I played biddy basketball I was literally getting punched. And they didn't call anything, I find that there r an equal amount of bad refs.
When your a player only one half of the gym hates you when your a referee the whole gym hates you lol
My mom is nice but if I do one thing wrong my dad would kill me
Fax my dad tells my coach to take me out of games, tells me that that I’m useless to the team and that no one in the team thinks I’m good, after that everyone makes fun of me for my dad
@@Mihariy ikr
have the parents volunteer to become a ref and let see what happens
Tell all this to hockey parents from atom and higher. they scream at the players and refs and most of the time we cant hear the parents unless were on the bench
My brother plays Basketball and my parents just say GUARD HIM GET ON HIM and other stuff but they never like be rude and stuff they tell the other team good job and they good try next time
pretty soon there wont be no referee if parents keep driving them all away..
You know you how the power as ref to remove those people
As a former soccer referee myself I have been yelled at by angry parents
I remember a coach gotten in my face and I just simply like brushed him off like go back to your bench I would’ve kicked him out especially with the words he exchange to me but I was a sideline referee at that game haha
I worked with the sports league in the video, WNSL, as both a baseball umpire and a clock operator for basketball. Parents can be absolutely ruthless with the officials, not to mention the majority of us were in high school. Good luck to the new generation of officials for little league, it gives you skin thick.
Sounds like the parents need to be playing on a kiddie sports team to learn stuff
Don't worry about us as parents just be fair to the kids
Got to put in the years to get to the pros
I hate parents nowadays. Always thinking they're better than everyone else.
Its basically a game it's part of life you'll either get a call or you'll not.... that's why it's better to not to look for a foul....m being a ref is not easy
Bad parents also make Teaching also makes teaching undesirable.
When parents try to live vicariously through their kids..
When the parents act like that just disqualify the child and tell the parents it's because of their behavior!
Hope that young man Makes it to be an NBA Ref. if its in his dreams.
I shot a man at a 2nd grade basketball tournament. No messing around when we strive to be champions.
When Karens and Darrens have nothing better to do at home so they go antagonize referees because they football team didn't make the playoffs 😂🤣
parents need to chill out he is helping like chill ,
When they get in to middle school and high school it counts then lol but elementary school ehh they make to many mistakes
Its still just a game in middle school and high School.
@@mph5896 ugh no in high school its no game If you wanna get to state and play with the best of best you gotta win! And plus when you get to state thats when college teams do the recruiting/looking for new players to sign
@@mph5896 nah in high school if a ref is unfair it’s way more serious especially if a trip to state is on the line
Parents don't cry when your kids can't do sports anymore.
It’s just a game
The parent want the trophy more than the kid. The kid doesn't care. Its the parent who wants it because they never got it as a child and their parents cared so damn bad
KARENS always ruining stuff
But the biggest lesson in athletics and life is winning and losing! Not just participation certificates!
Ok parents how about you go out there and ref...
Geeezz!😣😞😒😒😩😫
Well parents think it's a blood sport not a game. I see titles like this and I think, remember Sill in the Soprano's "blow that whistle one more time and I'ma stick it in your..." They get a little far into a simple kids game. "Kids" being the key word here, not parents.
Man I used to love reffing and the parents just made it suck
Not surprised, everyone has become so entitled now a days
