Youth Referees Say Angry Parents Make Their Jobs Undesirable

  • These referees want to make sure that their game is still fun. Charlie Tygard is a youth basketball coach and says he wishes some parents would realize that teaching kids the fundamentals of the game is more important than winning. Unfortunately, he says he’s been confronted by angry moms and dads over calls he’s made on the court. Donovan Smith is a student athlete and a referee who has also faced off with competitive parents. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

Well to be fair the referees I had in football turn their back during a fight the kid was grabbing the kids helmet and bashing in the ground we all yelled at the referee to notify him and he turned around and shrugged it off another one during lacrosse allowed highschooler to compete with middle schoolers. We had many calls ignored and jeopardizing the safety of our team. We even had to report one ref a few times because it was getting out of hand.

I was a umpire from 2008-2011 for Youth league in West Palm Beach along with Kid-pitch and oh boy did I have my fair share of run-ins on and off the field with parents. I was a juvenile doing it as a gig after high school. It was so bad in 2010 that our field had to erect a no tolerance policy for outrageous behavior. I wasn't the only one getting battered, it was all 9 of us. Late 2011 I was going off to college anyways but the second to last game a guy followed me into the parking lot at night when the game was done and that was it for me. Didn't even finish the last playoff game. This was over a decade ago though and its seemingly a tiny bit better but there is so much work to do. Got to think of the kids and the parent's pride gets in the way.

The parent want the trophy more than the kid. The kid doesn't care. Its the parent who wants it because they never got it as a child and their parents cared so damn bad

Well parents think it's a blood sport not a game. I see titles like this and I think, remember Sill in the Soprano's "blow that whistle one more time and I'ma stick it in your..." They get a little far into a simple kids game. "Kids" being the key word here, not parents.
