    Gentlemen: first of all I applaud your efforts at attempting to make it a quantitative test. The only problem becomes when both machines are not equal in their parameters, such as weight and horse power. ALTHOUGH: you could make this a lot more interesting and obtain useful information as well as answers to your question. Find out the power to weight ratio of each machine. Then use a test weight in the performance range of the lower ratio machine. Then increase the weight of the test weight until it's the same test weight to power/weight ratio of the bigger machine. Now your comparing apples to apples and will get a meaningful answer as to which machine provides better engineering performance.

    It's painfully obvious that the operator was purposely skewing the results in favor of the Kubota. And the Kubota is a bigger machine! I don't even like CAT, but if you are going to make videos, make a fair comparison.

    I have a question, Why are you not comparing the same weight class? I bet you also believe the world is flat.
    You should have a cat 305.5 Not a 305 in this video.

  • @wfodickinson
    @wfodickinson Před 8 lety +7

    Not a fan of either but it doesn't seem like a fair comparison considering that cat also offers a 305.5, just sayin. It's like comparing a KX121 to a 305.

    Is it possible the new Kubota was purchased because the cat was broken and not even working correctly? Would have been nice to show the hours on each machine. Kubota was brand new, cat was a year old, could have 2k hours on it. (And yes, I was working on a Komatsu yesterday that has worn weak hydraulics at 2250 hours.) So even if the two machines were the same size (which I'm not sure about) comparing a used last years model to a new model is not very useful.

    Couple of problems here. I'm not a CAT fan boy not even close, I prefer Komatsu but in full disclosure I do own CAT equipment, due mostly to the great support from my local dealer, Milton CAT and the not so great support from the local Komatsu dealer, CN Wood. 1) Even if they used a CAT 305.5 the Kubota would still be 500lb heavier. They aren't comparing the same class machines. 2) The operator of the Kubota is snapping the boom all the way back during the lifts, the CAT operator is leaving at least 5 degrees.

    The U55 is a 49.5HP and over 12000 lbs. The 305 is a 41HP 11000 lb machine. Obviously the U55 would outperform it in a lifting competition.

    • @alittlebitofeverything5090
      @alittlebitofeverything5090 Před 8 lety +2

      Hi, the Cat 305 weighs 11,217 and has 40.2hp and 31.5 max gpm flow. The Kubota U55 weighs 12,335 and has 45.2hp and 39.4 max gpm flow. So the even though the Kubota weighs 1118lbs more, they should both be able to lift approximately the same amount with the dozer blade down. As we can see here they can not! Ha ha

    • @dirtmonkey_14h2
      @dirtmonkey_14h2 Před 8 lety +1

      +Troy M if that 1000+ lbs is focused towards the rear of the machine then physics dictates it would be more stable with more weight on the front end with blade down. You also need to take into account total length of track to blade.

    • @david427steel
      @david427steel Před 8 lety +1

      Because when you a dealing with giant machines in the 11,000-12,500lb range, 1,000lb means nothing, right? Too funny.

    • @david427steel
      @david427steel Před 8 lety +2

      I'm confused Troy, you seem to think it was a fair comparison. It wasn't. The 305e is in the next weight class down from the U55 - even the 305.5 weighs 500lb less than the U55 and it looked like the operator was dogging it on the 305.

    • @david427steel
      @david427steel Před 8 lety +2

  • @AveryExcavating
    @AveryExcavating Před 8 lety +1

    what are a few pros and cons of both machines? I'm currently looking between the kx040-4, maybe the u55 but it seems a bit heavy to pull behind 1ton truck. also highly considering the cat 305e2cr. great video too!!

    • @dirtmonkey_14h2
      @dirtmonkey_14h2 Před 8 lety

      I used to pull a 305 e2 around with a 1 ton, i dont think you'll have a problem. The major pro with cat is dealer support, as well as having an easier time finding parts and there generally is a lot more info about cat machines.

    • @david427steel
      @david427steel Před 8 lety +3

      I pull a 304 and 305 behind a 3/4 ton and SRW 1 ton all the time. Just make the weight is balanced on the trailer - no problems. Any machine over 10k lb and you basically need to pull it with a 10K GVW 1 ton or 3/4 ton or in most states you need a class A CDL - a 14k or 16k trailer leaves you only 12k lb or 10k lb GVW cap for a tow vehicle if you want to keep it under 26k lb.

    I prefer my Bobcat E45. I am not sure if it would be an apples to apples comparison, but I absolutely love that machine. And my local Bobcat dealer is friggin' awesome to deal with. Because I purchased it outright with cash, they gave me a two year service for no cost. I got three sizes of buckets and the thumb attachment. We originally got it for laying drain tile in our fields. But we started using it for damn near everything. It's small enough to pull with a 5th wheel two axle with our Cummins Dodge with minimal fuss and strong enough to do some really big jobs. We are tearing down an old barn and this thing makes it fun. The blade on it is one of its best little secrets. Most just use it for an outrigger but it is so nice to grade with. I would not use it primarily for that, but it does it quite well.

    There are two areas you didn't touch that should be noted. First, is hydraulics. Cats have better hydraulics. And second is service. KUBOTA has not grasped the concept of service after the sale. Sure you might get it fixed if you can get it to the shop, but CAT comes to the job site and fixes it right there. With URGENCY. These machines, even the small ones were purchased to make money with. In many cases the purchaser cannot afford downtime to make that next payment. THAT is the real world that excavator owners live in. KUBOTA has a long way to go to get there.

      @GRAVESSHOCKER Před 8 lety +2

      +Ryan Alston Yes, I meant to say 11,000 or maybe 11,400,, but if we are being accurate, the U55 with cab and rubber weighs 12,550, so either way the Cat is more than 1000lbs lighter with less HP. Not an even comparison, the 305.5(at 11,950 with cab and rubber) would be more equal to the u55. A 1000lbs in weight and less HP makes a big difference, if we went the other way, the Cat 305 would be more comparable to the Kubota KX 121. I'm not putting down either machine, I own both brands but I like my Cats a lot more.

    Kubota way better than a cat. My kubota 40 loads and unloads those blocks in my f550 dump truck and carries them just fine.

    Given the multitude of factors which may help to decide the brand and model type of mini excavator purchased, I doubt that this 'test' will provide any insight!
    To exclude an excavation test in a test of mini excavators is irrational at best!
