The Nerdwriter is a series of video essays about art, culture, politics, philosophy and more. - Zábava
The cost you pay of not choosing to share your thoughts on a popular film with millions of current viewers, to instead bring us some beautiful obscure artwork from the past, to share an important point for the present, is not unnoticed and unappreciated. It is deeply noticed and appreciated.
YES INDEED
obscure isn't the right word. this is a cult classic.
HEAR HEAR!!
Cléo from 5 to 7 is one of the highest regarded films of the French New Wave, which is perhaps the most famous film movement of the 20th Century. This ain’t obscure.
This!
You've missed another small detail in the shift, at 6:00 when she looks at herself in the mirror she says "Je ne peux même pas lire ma propre peur" which translates literally to "I can't even READ my own fear" and the writings on the mirror are in mandarin (I think), as if her reflection became foreign language to her, she can't read herself anymore.
Well caught!!
its a good day when nerdwriter posts
What does nerdwriter do in addition to these videos?
@@highwind1991 I wonder that too. He used to post more regularly and I wonder if he’s working on a book or something?
yes much better
It will be a better day when Nerdwriter plots.
So true
I like how in several scenes we see Cleo through a glass like in the store and train cart. How we see Cleo but also see reflections of us looking back at us.
Might also be a metaphor for how she feels commodified and simply like a "product" to be seen through a store window
Or how men see women (in the beginning at least) 💔
Every time you analyze art, it's art in and of itself.
When the night was darkest, the promised video essayist returned *happy nerd noises*
Chill out, what ya yellin' for? Lay back, it's all been done before. And if you could only let it be, you will see that I am the funniest YouT*ber of all time. Admit it, my dear follow*r rea
@@AxxLAfriku nah.
Whenever I see "happy ____ noises" or "sad ____ noises" I can only picture a face slobbering all over itself as it makes nasally honking sounds.
we did not deserve Agnès Varda. i miss her more every day.
The tarot card Death, despite understably feared, is not a card meaning the end permanently. The card respresents closing one door and opening another. It fits the theme of this film really well!
Yes!! I t makes me crazy how often this is misinterpreted!
I’ve thought about it a lot over the years and I think Cleo from 5 to 7 is probably the greatest of all French New Wave movies and probably the best movie of the 1960s... which is a tall fucking order
Nämen 😳😳
Wimmo Swedberg i swear to god
Just finished Cléo yesterday. What are the chances Nerdwriter
What do you mean... finished? Did you watch it in multiple sittings?? Very sinister implication
@@theleaderman8557 I do not get you
Me too!!!
I watch movies in multiple sittings all the time
@@georgeco2351 he kids 😁
With a soothing voice he comes telling the stories nobody heard about revealing to others there's more to life than a 9-5 job. Thanks nerdwriter ❤
I am sure almost every comment is about this, but such is the joy of seeing a nerdwriter video on the subscription page.
Thank You
Was a minute in when I stopped and that night we watched the film itself. This is the kind of analysis that makes you realize the depth of craft and the complex structure underpinning such a deceptively simple premise. Thank you for again reminding me of the power of art.
That moment Florence felt free, I felt her joy within me. Which is big as I haven’t felt joy in a while. I simply must watch this film with my sister, we both adore French films
I'm far from an expert of arts, but this is one of the few older films I've ever seen. After seeing your analysis about it here, I'm keen to watch it again with a new perspective that I didn't see the first time. Thanks for teaching me and many other about art, and opening up a world of emotions in the process.
Oscar Wilde used to say that an EXPERT is an ordinary away from home giving advice.
You make me feel intelligent when I understand what you're talking about. I think that's the biggest compliment I can give you.
omg i looove agnes varda’s movies and documentaries and i am so happy that nerdwriter made a (presumably) fascinating video essay about it :)
Cleo de 5 a 7 is by far her best film, but she made a lot of great narrative films that were criminally underappreciated.
But her true call was definitely documentary filmmaking, some of the most vivid and joyful documentaries I've ever seen.
I REALLY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. THEY INSPIRE MY WRITINGS AND MY ESSAYS. I TRULY TRULY THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART
Hit the cap lock my dear
Wow, I already thought of Cleo de 5 a 7 as an irrefutable masterpiece; I was taken by: it's themes os existentialism, the male gaze, destiny, the mesmerising cinematography and the music by Michel Legrand. But you managed to find meaning in symbolisms that went all over my head
Good job!
Man I missed Nerdwriter’s videos. Glad to see you back again!
I remember having a lecture about Cleo at actual film school. I didn't learn so much about that film as I'm learning now.
This was just beautiful. Literally
Comment sections are toxic on most channels, but when it comes to Nerdwriter, everyone is just here for the art.
I've been following you for a while and it's the first Nerdwriter video that brought me to tears. Your writing and editing are phenomenal as always. Thank you for introducing me to this beautiful movie, I learn so much when I watch your essays !
I have followed your stuff for years. Thanks for continuing doing these. This one was just... beautiful. Best wishes 🙏🏾
Literally saw this film two days ago, this is amazing
One of my favorite youtubers is still alive! Your insights on all things film expose the realities of our experiences as human, opening minds, and changing hearts.
that is.. tragic, goddamit. I am crying jesus
One of the greatest films ever made, you should check it out if you haven't.
@@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 I already checked and it's not on Netflix and the library is closed bc COVID...
And it’s not even a movie, this is just a reiteration of one.
Honestly your endings always have me in goosebumps. Thank you for introducing this film to a new audience
Excellent contents. Been on this channel for 4 years and can’t get enough.
I wanted to say how much I love this channel and all your videos. Truly one of a kind. Thank you for making these masterpieces.
Oh I'm glad I found this, Varda is easily one of my favourite directors. Her eye is phenomenal, it's rare to find someone who films humanity and people so well
That is a wonderful film to choose to analyse. Very well documented and beautifully edited. Thank you for this great moment.
This is crazy!! I was watching this film today and now you have uploaded this video!!!!!
Thank you so much for bringing attention to this movie, and director. I think I have to go down the Agnes Varda rabbit hole now.
I needed this video today more than you will ever know. Thanks for coming in on time.
Being for others is what ultimately makes women so vulnerable and dependent on other people, especially on men. Good one. Thanks
Love this, we need more content on Agnés Varda, she was a goddess.
Literally every single video is a masterpiece. You have changed my relationship with art.
Just finished this movie today, looked up Varda and here’s Nerdwriter brilliantly illuminating an incandescent film
This is a movie I liked well enough as I watched it. Your analysis has given me a deeper appreciation for it!
Every time nerdwriter posts im quickly reminded why this is one of my favorite channels
Saw this film for the first time months ago, and yet I still find myself thinking about it regularly.
This video moved me. Great job and thank you for introducing me to this director and these bodies of work.
Thank you. I have already watched this film, but your video made me realise so many subtle things I had missed. Please keep doing this as long as you can.
I loved the way nerdwriter used mirror images as well...keep up the great work.
Good show ol'man! It's good to see a celebration of Mme Varda's work. We see many celebrations of the other significant filmmakers of the new french wave, but it is most excellent to her masterpiece held up in such high esteem.
Today’s mirror is Instagram. Social media has little to do with you but rather other’s perception of you
3deep5me
Nah. That's life. The way you dress. Your opinions. It's all a mirror. Very few people are true to themselves.
A friend of mine doesn’t care for it because of that
So now you can watch “visages villages” in other words “faces places” is a documentary which include Agnes Varda👍🏼
On my goodness that was just wonderful. I look forward to exploring more of your work. Thank you.
These videos deserve more attention, I absolutely love em
I don't know how you can leave in a state of awe every single time.
i underestimated the power of the goosebumps i felt in this video. thank you
Using this for my film studies class. Super helpful! Thanks a ton :)
I think this is the best video and narration from this channel. you keep getting better and better !!
Favorite channel + favorite director = happiness of the day!
I got to see this in the theater back in January of 2020...it was one of my last big-screen viewings before the pandemic shut the theaters down...
Beautiful!
Always pleased to see a new video on my feed. Many thanks!
That was beautiful, I have to check Agnes Varda's work out one day, thank you for sharing! :)
I fell in love with French cinema and culture because of Agnes and her husband Jacques Demy. is one of my favorite movies ever, that I still find time to watch at least once a year. Thank you for the beautiful essay, you have never failed to amuse me with your ways of analyzing things. I don't dare to call myself a cinephile yet, but your videos sure make me appreciate movies and art, in general, even more than I did before.
Nerdwriter is a gift that keeps on giving
A dream come true to have my thesis cited by you! Thank you!
I haven't been disappointed with a nerdwriter video ever.
This man needs a podcast- the voice, research, not moving with trends and honest
Ohhh how we’ve missed your commentary … always brilliant, always insightful 🖋🖋🎥
Man this is my favorite channel, so much knowledge
One of my favorite films, I need to rewatch it soon.
absolutely fantastic video. I had seen this movie a couple of months ago in my cinema class and I learned more here than I ever had in school. Keep it up
Thank you so much for showing and analysing more art from female geniuses. That means a lot to me!
I love these videos, Theres always more you can learn & these help direct my attention
Excellent analysis, exquisitely poetic narrative. Glad that you recommended this film to me. Thanks...
She is one of my favorite cinematographers.
I really wanted to explore the filmography and you gave me reasons to do it.Not just one but several reasons.
Here it is a list of Agnes Varda's filmography:
czcams.com/play/PL3bN3qL-ZFiGphnT6Lv9wCypVP9JDY1gC.html
Perfect Videography, good relay of subject theme and videography style
I watched this in my History Of Theater class. Definitely a classic. Loved it.😌
I'm so glad I found you and your channel, what a gift
nothing starts my day better than a new nerdwriter video
Amazingly insightful video essay as always, Nerd. Can't wait for the next topic. Cheers!
@nerdwriter you are the only review/analysis vlog that I don't mind exposing myself to even before I have seen them referred to in your work...
You’re making the world a better place. Thank you.
When cleo explores her freedom, she walks down the stairs dancing. Oh wait. I saw the same kind of scene in Joker.
Wow! I subscribed because I found some really great thought provoking video essays about some films and other pieces of art that I admired. But this channel has introduced me to some things I might not have ever discovered otherwise, like Tarkovsky or this.
While watching this video, I was reminded of the following lyrics from the song 'Jo Bhi Main' by Irshad Kamil, taken from the film Rockstar:
"Maine Yehi Socha Hai Aksar
Tu Bhi Main Bhi Sabhi Hain Sheeshe
Khud Hi Ko Hum Sabhi Mein Dekhein
Nahi Hoon Main Hoon Main To Phir Bhi"
This roughly translates to:
"I have often thought,
that you, me, all of us are mirrors,
we see only ourselves in all,
I am not there still I am.."
Thank you Nerdwriter for creating such wonderful content.
Great video as always. It's a bit intimidating to see (and just learn, in my case) masters like Agnes Varda. How elevated and thought out their work is.
You can tell the film is good when the video about the film makes you emotional
Finally it's available
Thank you for sharing your amazing take on such underrated masterpieces !
Beautiful, intelligent, masterful - thank you for introducing me to Agnes Varda
Your posts make my day man. Thanks!
Merci de remettre en lumière cette formidable réalisatrice française. Thanks a lot !
Brought me to tears!love this vid, just breathtaking
It's been a while, since I watched one of your videos...
Twenty seconds in the video and I knew again, why I love your videos.
Your uploads never disappoint!! Can’t wait for the next one!!!
Great to see Agnes Varda here :-)
I will literally stop my car, pull over and watch any new video by Nerdwriter. [posted from the shoulder of a highway]
That opening line sounds so beautiful in French 🥺
youre videos are so good and your voice is so soothing
Very interesting
When nerdwriter posts I become more excited learning about our physical world as a physics student and how arts make us see things differently, science and art.
I recently saw Cleo from 5 to 7 and it’s just brilliant
LOVED this one.
