It is a very old Jewish song for longing for the Temple after was destroyed. Maureen Nehadar did new version of this song called Beautiful heights. This version of the son is beautiful as the Maureens. version.
Its a song of great passionate longing for the renewal of a Jewish sovereignty in the land of Israel and a beautiful, joyful, sovereign Jerusalem (Yefei Nof, Mesos Tevel, Kiriya Le-melech Rav).
Its a longing for spiritual fulfillment that can not be attained in exile.
Words are drawn from works of Rabbi Judah HaLevi (1075 - 1141, spain) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judah_Halevi, and Zeharia Aldrahari
It yearns for the days of old, and mourns Israel's exile and the destruction of Jerusalem / the temple ( Ha'mon Rach'mai nic'mar ki ez'ke'ra kedem Ke'vodek asher galah ve'navek asher cha' rav).
The phrase used to describe the overflowing yearning for the days of old - *Ha'mon Rach'mai nic'mar* - is also used in Genesis, (43: 20) - "*Deeply moved* [Nic'meru Rach'mav] at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep" -- after Joseph finally saw his younger brother - Benyamin -- whom he hasn't seen for 20 years.
The word "of old" *Kedem* -- may also allude to Eicha -- the book of Lamentation (5, 21) "Restore us to yourself, Lord, that we may return; renew our days as of old [Kedem]" -- which is traditionally read every year on the day the temple in jerusalem was destroyed (the 9th of the month of Av) -- commemorating the event as a fast day. -- the use of the word Kedem thus further amplifies the hope of redemption.
The word as *I remember* days of old -- [ki *ez'ke'ra* kedem] -- strongly reminds of a key liturgy piece traditionally sung during the high holidays, based on the poem by Amitai Ben Shpatia (890, Italy)-- Ez'kera Elokim we'ah-amiya -- mourning the destruction of jerusalem [1].
It has further elements that refer to redemption and the covenant between the Jewish people and God, such as the allusion of *on eagles wings* , and the desire that they would swiftly take the author / the exiled people home from the west (spain/exile) to the east (redemption / israel) [u'mi itenenei al-kan'fei ne'sharim]
Eagles wings are the metaphor mentioned in the book of Exodus (19:5) - "You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt [the first exile of the jewish people], and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself"
The eagle is chosen as metaphor since it flies fastest and highest of all birds, and protects its children with its own body, by placing them on its wing, so no arrow or enemy can hurt them from below. And, the redemption out of Egypt was sudden and fast.
The mastery of biblical language in the short poem with its subtle meanings for the hebrew (bible) reader, and the restrained and precisely pronounced interpretation sung by Ophir Ben Shitrit are indeed superb.
