  • We've driven the Civic Type-R in a comparison for TV, but Honda wanted us to experience the changes made for 2019 so they sent us one for a fast blast. The guys charge up a tight mountain road and remember what they liked, what they didn't, and what's changed. Plus, Paul tries to convince Todd that the Type-R qualifies as Special.
    You can see our comparison of the Type-R vs Focus RS on Amazon Prime, for free.

    I am a 42 year old father of 4 boys. I come from the late 90s tuner scene which was so much fun. I bought my Type R 4 months ago. Its an awesome car. Still wanna find a mint 99 si someday. That was my early 20s car and it was just fantastic. Nice review!

      For me, I drove a type R, wasn’t really blown away compared to my Sti, ended up not buying. It’s a great car for sure, but the biggest turn off was the sounds it -doesn’t- make. I looked up different aftermarket exhaust options, and none sounded as good as a boxer engine. Plus it looks hideous from the rear 😂

I really like the balance if the car already, it is neutral handling. I may do an anti lift kit and solid bushings, to help with on throttle turning and make things even more solid but going to see how it does stock first.

    Following up on my previous comment of keeping the car stock. I did end up adding 18x10 wheels and with wide tires and spoon lowering springs and my laptimes are significantly lower. Passing cars that cost much more such as the 911,Cayman, Corvettes and M2s... although this is in the intermediate groups and some people don't know how to drive their cars. All I did was just enhance what Honda already had. I can pretty much place the car wherever I want on the track and on the limits of adhesion (or when the re71rs are overheated) I just get understeer which is easily mitigated by just letting off, it is very neutral and the lift off oversteer is minimal and doesn't bite back.

    Currently driving an Si. Like it, but looking for more. Thinking once it's paid off get into either one of these, a Veloster N, or keeping the the Si as a daily and buying a nice C6 or 5.0 mustang as a weekender. Is the Type R a big enough upgrade to keep a neurotic car enthusiast at bay?

    • @njoythedrive
      @njoythedrive Před 4 lety +2

      100 hp is noticeably different, but if you're around a place with a lot of straight long roads, get a C6 or a 5.0. If you have curvy roads that you visit often, the Vel N or the CTR is your best bet.

      A year late, but the Si does not have rev match. The pedal placement on that is just as bad as it is on the Type R. A lot of people run throttle pedal spacers on both cars, and for good reason.

    How does the type r compare to the WRX regarding ride quality and nvh.
    I own a 2017 WRX, and road noise is unbearable at highways speeds. I am thinking of trading in for a 2019 type r or a 2014 cayman. I rode along a friends cayman and it feels solid, no weird vibrations, and road noise is a lot better. I have never been in a CTR, so I don't know how it compares in that sense.

    $36.5k if you can find one at MSRP. Every dealership I checked out in SoCal was marking these up when I was shopping for one. Gave up looking and decided to just stick with what I have for now. Shame, cuz it seems like such a good car.

    • @boomshakalaka8054
      @boomshakalaka8054 Před 4 lety

      DoubleOSevan you can get a leftover one at MSRP. I was going to pull the trigger on a leftover 2018 black type R after the 2019s came out but decided I’d rather not have car payments. Lol.

    • @DoubleOSevan
      @DoubleOSevan Před 4 lety

      boom shakalaka true. But I think leftovers should be below MSRP like every other older model year car. Even paying MSRP doesn’t sit right for me - regardless of how hyped the car is. I had a salesman tell me with a straight face that 15k over MSRP was a steal and that it’s “worth it for a racecar.” /facepalm

      DoubleOSevan norm reeves Honda in West Covina was the one doing 2 leftover at MSRP. I hear ya out but these cars lose very little value, including the civic si. I bet you can buy a leftover at MSRP, drive it for two years and carvana will still pay you what you owe on the car or maybe just a little less. Carvana has been overpaying people for cars, idk how they do it lol

    • @DoubleOSevan
      @DoubleOSevan Před 4 lety +1

      boom shakalaka you’ve got a point there with regards to them holding value. I’ve been knee deep in older car projects and was kinda looking for a way out with a new car that’s ready to go out the box. I figure if I’m spending ~$40k for a car, I modify and keep it long term. Maybe I’ll look into these cars again in a few years when there’s a revision of some sort.
