    Why are people OBSESSED with the Fujifilm X100V and Fuji X100VI compact digital mirrorless cameras? Tony & Chelsea Northrup review them to discover their secrets. The compact size means you can easily fit them in your pocket or purse. They’re FUN to use with their fully analog controls for aperture, shutter speed and ISO. They're the perfect cameras for travel and street photography.
    The Fuji X100VI adds some really useful, cool features: 40 megapixels (up from 26), sensor stabilization and improved autofocus. Of those, we didn’t find the megapixel improvement to make much of a difference in image quality. However, the sensor stabilization GREATLY improved image quality in low-light conditions with still subjects. The autofocus improvement is pretty huge - the new X100 VI got subjects sharp, quicker, meaning we had a lot more keepers.
    The new Fuji X100 VI also includes some improved video capabilities, including HDR video, F-Log2, 4k/60 and 6k/30. However, it also has more rolling shutter than before. Still, we found the X100VI to be significantly better at video.

    We need more premium compacts in the market. The camera companies totally misunderstood what many of us wanted when it stopped making compacts. We still want compacts, we just don't want cheap nasty compacts. I'd love to see Fuji making a cheaper X100 that is EVF only, and perhaps the option of a 27mm (40mm equiv) lens. I'd get a Ricoh GRIIIx but all the tales of dust put me off.

      28mm was being avialable 2-times via X70 & XF10, and both have not been a great success...go figure! 28mm is simply too wide, for ordinary shots. Into contrast, with 35mm, which is way more universal, not that wide, one can shoot literally everything ! From architecture over portraits to landscape, objects..etc...it doesn't matter. If there's one focal length - to shoot it all - it's simple 35mm, that's why i am using that focal length since the late 80's. 🙂 Same goes for Leica Q/Q2/Q3... there are many comments into the forums, that some guys sold it, after figure it out, 28mm is too wide for them, for daily shots...yes, you can crop to 35, 50, etc...but then, it's not the same, like native 35mm, because of the DoF, the opening angle of the lens, i'd always prefer a true, real 35mm, instead of using something else, and cropping into digitally to 35mm. That said, 40mm is my #2 choice, think Konica. 🙂 Yes, a GR-IIIx would be lovely, *if* it would feature a integrated EVF, not a addOn OVF, which is just a OVF. I mean, no status info about f-stop, shutterspeed, battery status, af confirm, etc. visible there. By design, i prefer a OVF, for my delicate eyes.
      And finally, Fujifilm *should* integrate a *true* rangefinder inside their hybrid EVF/OVF. This makes all the difference, for real. Think X-Pro4, Fujifilm. Maybe 2025, then...

    When I had the X100F I was hoping for three things in the V: Weather sealing, articulated screen and IBIS. The V had 2 of these. But I still bought it. So when the VI came with IBIS that was reason enough for me to upgrade and get all three features I was whising for since the F. New improved lense, 40 Megapixel and improved design was all bonus features.

    Hey guys! I've been following you for years and have purchased your books etc. so I very much enjoy your work. (Thank you!) However, I have been eagerly waiting for you guys to review this particular camera and the review really fell flat for me. It was more of a brief overview than a review. For example: the lens on this camera really needs to be stopped down to f/2.8 before it resolves well. So comparing them at f/2 isn't a good comparison. Anyway, I was just hoping for some nerdy testing and maybe some in depth analysis.

    The Sony RX1 has a larger sensor. While a similarly-sized camera -- the Panasonic GX9 -- has a smaller sensor than the Fuji X100VI. That accounts for the difference in image quality between the 3. Also, you forgot to mention that the X100VI's LCD screen tilts down further than it did on the X100V.

    • @jaygreer7430
      @jaygreer7430 Před 2 měsíci

      The x100 series lens was last updated with the x100v, which wasn’t really all that long ago. Fuji’s awesome f2 23mm lens was released much earlier and is on the list of lenses that resolve the 45mp sensor. So I question what you’re saying. Fwiw, I own Fuji’s XT5 and x100F. Both are solid cameras. I’m sure the VI would be an upgrade to my x100F and on par with my XT5, albeit in a smaller form factor but with a fixed lens.

  • @jaygreer7430
    @jaygreer7430 Před 2 měsíci

    @Tony, I know you were critical of Fuji’s menu system. Admittedly, it’s pretty complicated and could be organized better. The good news is that Fuji gives users many ways to customize the camera (e.g., custom buttons, Fuji’s “My Menu”, and Fuji’s “Quick Menu.”) Once you set up the camera how you want, you really don’t need to do much menu diving. If set up correctly, every key feature that you use regularly will be at your fingertips. In your video, when you were demonstrating the complexities of Fuji’s menu system, I saw that “My Menu” on your camera was grayed out. This means you hadn’t set it up yet!

      Doesn’t it enable editing and adjustment including post cropping and sharpening etc before sending to the App or posting online with the new Fuji system? I’m taking my X100VI to my nephew’s wedding (posh London hotel) to take discrete candid shots and just let the pro get on with their stuff. I can then check out, do mini edits and post into an online system in near real time. By the end of the night I’ll have a nice candid album, done tastefully, for the guests, whilst they all need to wait to see the pro’s fancy work.
      I got married in 1990 and do have a beautiful formal album as a keepsake but very few casual shots other than a few faded prints now. In contrast, I took my tiny Minox 35GT to my brother’s wedding back in 1986 and was able to recently scan some nice casual shots from the original negs and they came out a great. We all looked so young back then….

    Your summary section is exactly why I am waiting for my preorder despite a lot of hate or misunderstanding around it. My X-T5 is great, very similar specs, but I will NOT carry it around everywhere. The fact half the X100VI lens is inside the body means you cannot just slap a pancake on the X-T5 and "get the same thing." Fuji's pancakes aren't even that good compared to the rest of the line up so you grab the bigger primes which are now even less pocketable. At the end of the day it's a perfect second, third, etc camera when you already have more of a that working tool camera that feels less fun and casual.

    I have been waiting for this review for a while - why so late? Avid Canon shooter and managed to get my hands (purchased) on the X100Vi at launch date - enthusiasm fuelled by all the hype. So now I compare the iPhone 15 Pro results with the Fuji - For displaying only on a monitor I am beginning to think! Pixel peeking shows up the algorithm complexities of iPhone and the roughness of images substantially enlarged. BUT the iPhone simply delivers gorgeous colours and sharp images with the option of changing focal length through dedicated lenses. As you stated, the Fuji menu system is really poor. So my new classy looking camera is staring at me and wondering if I am going to disown him! Early days, but I am seriously thinking about selling it. I trialled the Leica Q2 and fell in love with that camera - and oh that lens!! Maybe this is influencing my thinking......HELP!

    Wow, there’s a lot of negativity in comments lately. I hope you two just shrug that off.
    Great review, and much appreciated given that you have to buy your own sample. I placed a pre-order on the release date. Fingers crossed the camera will materialize by summer.
    One factor in favor of purchasing this camera is that it likely has an incredibly low cost of ownership. The recent and ongoing fervor over the camera means one can use it for a year or two and sell it to KEH with very little loss in value. It’s essentially a free demo. (I’m not referring to people trying to flip the camera, which is disheartening.)

      RX100vii is my goto for casual shooting because of the amazing AF and the large zoom. It's not as fun of an experience though as a fixed focal length for point and shoot. It feels more digital than a solid tactile experience. The buttons are very small on the Sony. I shot film on a $25 Kodak and it was so much more fun. Photography has gotten too technical. I want this camera really bad. The main thing that has stopped me from getting Fuji in the past is their lagging AF compared to Sony and Canon.

    Great and honest review. I use X100T and X100F. Now I have X100VI and agree with you that Fuji App is terrible. I use Android phone and 4 out of 10, it cannot connected successfully in the first time. Fuji App is very left behind while Sony App is able to connect via Wifi 5Ghz and tranfers raw files to phone. I have both Sony A7Cii and Fuji X100VI. What I really hate Sony is their EVF and LCD resolution. For EVF Fuji VS Sony, 3690K VS 2360K. LCD Screen 1620 VS 1037. Actually Sony is one of the top maker of LCD screen in the world. But they give customer very suck low quality screen in their latest cameras. Besides the design Fuji HYBRID view finder is awesome. I always wonder while Leica does not do the same thing for M series.
    Fuji X100VI is a good sample of making camera to satisfy people life style today. Camera makers shoud stop thinking that the new model must have higher fps, larger sensor or higher ISO capability. The new model may be somthing not different but really serve cusomers' need.
    Anyway I am happy with both cameras. For family trip, I will take Fuji. But for my work, I will use Sony anyway since it is more flexible with availability of lens choices. Fuji is much much better than Sony for skin tone.

    Remove SD card and give internal flash storage.

    change to the larger w235 battery. But I guess physics was the limit

      Your recommendation is fine if you need a new system. Some of us already have great systems from Canon and the like and don’t necessarily want to start off a second, or third, one. I did look long and hard over the last few weeks considering the X100VI or the XT5 and a great prime or the excellent 18-55mm as raved about by Kevin Rockwell. I went the X100 route for size, discretion in cities, museums etc. if I had no camera I would actually buy the XH2 then build out from that. It is superb quality and VFM but clearly not ‘retro’. The style is a secondary concern for me but a nice bonus on the X100.

    Been a follower for a long time, but if you're handwaving film sims like they don't matter to Fuji shooters and prospects... you've missed the entire point of why the Fuji X100vi will be backordered, at least, for the remainder of 2024.
    The idea is "you never need a RAW file, it's like shooting film." Spending 2 hours in Lightroom wrangling Sony ARW files, is not something Fuji shooters want to deal with. I use the same USB-C cable I use to charge my phone to move photos from camera to phone. Far faster. And I could do it with the V just fine before the Vi.

      It breaks so many modern GUI design guidelines, like a lack of touch, searchability, unnecessary options, and much of it isn't self-explainatory. THE ENTIRE INTERFACE IS WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS WHY IS IT YELLING?
      Imagine a new photographer finding the options "HIGH ISO NR", "D RANGE PRIORITY" or "TONE CURVE". None of those include an explanation. They're near the top of the menu system, implying they're important, but what do they do and when should you change them?

    I love Tony and Chelsea... and yes, these cameras are lovely, BUT..... they're way overpriced, sorry.
    I've got an Olympus E-P5 -- from 2013 -- it does everything a rangefinder needs to do (detachable viewfinder, but tiltable screen), beautiful color science with numerous customizable filters which approximate the "Fuji film look," also has 5 stops of stabilization, far more versatility with cheap interchangeable lenses, smartphone connectivity, and (in my opinion) is every bit as gorgeous as the Fuji. Used cost? $300.
    Don't want to take away from these cameras, because they're really good. If you've got money to burn, Fuji has a camera for you. For everyone else, there's other options that will give you years of enjoyment.
