    Lovely video. So, the bokeh issue you're experiencing.... I don't think it's documented well enough so you may not know, but that's the leaf shutter causing that. I thought it was anything over 1/400 but I'm reading now that it's anything over 1/500 and the leaf shutter impacts bokeh shapes at wide apertures. If you flick on the ND filter and keep shutter speeds below 1/400 or 1/500 you will see the bokeh take on a totally different character that's significantly less busy. Just a quark of the lens and shutter design.

    Thanks for the comparison. At 3:12 I think the X100VI just nailed the eye in sharper focus. The eyebrow on the V on the left is sharper, and softer on the VI on the right. But, better AF is kinda like getting a sharper lens. My x100v photos were often slightly out of focus, like this one.

    thanks for the comparison. i thought i ´ll have to go with the VI because of IBIS to use it for video too but based on your test footage the X100VI footage with IBIS is shaky too so it’s required to use a gimbal. don’t get me wrong the X100VI video sequence is significantly smoother but in my opinion its still far away from great handheld smoothness. in this case cheaper X100V should be the option is i don’t need 40MP.

    Do you think the lens can’t resolve enough for the sensor?
    I’ve noticed the raws in LR softer than I expected. I love the camera (my first x100) but expected sharper image. I didn’t buy for sharpness so not a deal breaker but seems they only are using the new sensor for availability / spec sheet bump rather than a massively better image.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Před 2 měsíci

      I think that may well be the case. I’ve been using this camera a ton these last few weeks in terms of image quality I really see no improvement over the X100v. • @PhilippeDHooghe
    @PhilippeDHooghe Před 2 měsíci

    Ah, again such an enjoyable video! I am not interested in getting the Fuji at this time, but I'm always learning and I like that a lot.
    Would I be mistaken to notice that if the sensor megapixel difference is barely noticeable on the results it means now the lens is the limitation, not the sensor? And that Fuji should have come out with a sharper lens for the VI to make more of a difference ? Because the added "cropability" may take away a bit of the fixed focal length downside - why I prefer the R8. I do agree with you the IBIS is a good upgrade, it makes the VI so much more useful in low light. As for the noise... the VI has a bit more of it and as on the R7 I believe it tends to throw off AF in low light and you seem to have noticed that a bit?

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Před 2 měsíci

      Thank you as always Philippe! It looks like you are correct, we will need a new lens on the X100 series before we see any major upgrade from the X100v in terms of image quality. Very true about the R7 also. Not sure why the X100vi was struggling so much in low light for me! I do think the R8 + the 28mm is the king of travel cameras right now, it’s great in every department from cropping, low light, AF and video. I suppose it just lacks the IBIS.

    Great video. Really insightful. I’ve been trying to decide if it’s worth selling my R8 for the x100vi. Love the look of the x100vi and the size, but thinking it might ultimately be too much of a down grade, especially given R8 is pretty small itself.
    How does the R8 handle higher iso pictures and noise compare compared to the x100vi. Assuming the R8 full frame would reduce noise better at higher isos?

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Před 2 měsíci

      I would personally stick with the R8 for pure image quality. It’s considerably better in my experience, have just been comparing them side by side this weekend. The X100vi does offer a fun, unique shooting experience though that isn’t really replicated by any Canon camera right now.

      Think the AF performance is cut short by the lens of the X100VI. An X-T5 with either the 23 F2 or the 23 F1.4 R LM WR will perform better when it comes to AF. If this is the most important point for you I would go with the X-T5 and one of the 23mm lenses.

    • @AufKohleGeboren
      @AufKohleGeboren Před 2 měsíci +2

      With Fuji it’s still the same when it comes to AF performance, you have to manipulate a lot of the out of the box stuff to achieve the best results. Change AF-C to focus priority, turn of AF+MF assist and so on. Was also the point with the X-T5. After I did all that the AF was much more reliable. With a Sony you take it out of the box and almost always get the best results straight away. Wondering how long it will take Fuji to be at this point. An X-T5 is maybe on par with a Sony 1XR2 from 2016 when it comes to AF.

      @@freekvanbuul5100 I also use my Sony A7IV when I know that I’m in a situation I don’t want to worry about focus. With the new firmware the Fuji AF is not bad but not as good as Sony or Canon. Got the X-T5 when it was released and prior to the firmware update I tried to make shots of my son driving down a hill with a sleigh. With Eye Detection on maybe 3 out of 10 shots were in focus. After the update it improved a lot.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thank you for watching! All the improvement seemed to be on the software side, the camera can track and detect faster but as others have said I’m not sure the lens itself self can keep up. That being said I had zero problems relying on the autofocus, but if I was capturing fast moving subjects I would have more faith in the XT5 and a newer lens.

    I'm similar to you where my main "work" camera is a Canon and I used Fujifilm cameras on the side for fun. Ultimately I sold the Fujis and use my Canon with smaller primes for travel and personal photos. The inconsistencies of Fujifilm AF drove me crazy. Interesting and useful vid - thanks. But I'm not sure it's a case of hype, really. More that the V disappeared and everyone still really wanted it, and now it's back with a few tweaks. So it's more like excitement that the camera exists again rather than that it's a radical quantum leap overhaul. That might be one and the same as hype and I might well be overthinking this! With regards to image quality, it looks the lens on the Leica Q2 did "survive" the megapixel upgrade to the Q3 but the lens on the x100v keeps the vi from excelerating. With better IBIS it would be a buy for me. It seems like Fuji is not able to implement good IBIS in any of there cameras, at least for video work.

  • @gohumberto
    @gohumberto Před 2 měsíci

    I add grain in my simulations, to take off that "digital perfection", so the VI resolution has no benefits for me.
    IBIS is always useful but not critical for a wide lens like this.
    I think the law of diminishing returns has really kicked in.

  • @ericjang3618

    The fact that there’s no difference with 300% shows that the lens cannot resolve 40 mp. I personally think the x100v shows better clarity too.

    IBIS is massive..don't kid yourself...it's a famr changer

      Thought exactly the same. That this kind of camera is not weather sealed is something that really bothers me cause it’s the kind of camera I want to take with me exactly in such bad weather conditions. You can get filters and somehow protect it that way yes but still it’s a negative thing considering the price.

    I’m torn, when it comes to this camera… I’m undecided. I went to my local camera store, all set to place an order. Every video I saw told me it was the ideal camera I could take with me on my trips and replace having to lug around with a lot of gear. I was expecting something that was pocketable. The problem? When I got to the store I saw they had a 100F - and it hit me… this camera is not pocketable at all. Yeah, it might fit in a coat, but it is not what I had made myself believe in my head. So, no, I did not place the order. I think for me the more convenient option is a Ricoh GRIIIx

    I once owned Fuji cameras in parallel with Canon cameras. From your examples in the video, I see that nothing has changed over the years. The images look just as strange and unnatural as before. There is a lot of in-camera image processing that cannot be turned off.

      Yeah! That RF 28mm f/2.8 is fantastic. And the R8 is a great upgrade from the RP! It is James who convinced me of buying the R8 while I already owned the R7 and was frustrated by the R7's portrait performance. I never regretted going for the R8 for a second... great advice!
