There’s a slight work around for the “Clarity/Sharpness” buffering issue. You can set your camera to shoot in low speed burst (I do 3.0) and it will take a photo as normal even with a “Clarity” applied film sim. The downside is that you won’t be able to use flash
Coming from the X-Tx I was trying to get a X100VI. But I ended up adding another interchangeable camera, the X-H2S. And oh boy how I didn't regret to buy this beast!
Thanks for your mention of the polar pro filter. I had not heard of the polarizer/mist combination before. I need to look into that.
It’s brand new! They’re sold out at the moment but worth getting an order in asap. Absolutely love it
Thank you. Your clip is really helpful.
Very informative.Thank you.
Great video. Love the candor.
Thanks thanks ! Appreciate the video and still going to buy one , it would be great for random streetphotography! Love the review!
Thanks Kyle - very beneficial lessons - hopefully it gets to the point where there is actually a sale price.
Question: what camera strap did you choose for this camera? I will check on that lens 'filter' you mentioned.
Would be good if Fuji made a stills only model and reduced the price by at least 30%. Some people dont need video.
Appreciate your honest review, we rarely see such review on SM
First video to me that covers aspects that others had never ever mentioned. Very good. Cheers.
I‘ve watched many, many videos about this camera so far and yours finally told me everything i want to know in one video. Thanks men!
Music to my ears. Happy to help!
I agree.
Thanks for the honest review of it.
Love and appreciate the honesty. Man of reason ❤
Great review
Hanging onto my 100v & xe4. Maybe tempted by the xpro4...
Great review. It helps calm the anxiety hehe. Tks!
i was planning on buying this camera and after watching few reviews, I was convinced with this video that it is not the right camera for me. thanks for your help.
Its the perfect review actually made me stop wasting my money
Kyle, is the auto-focus when on single point any faster on the X100VI than on the X100V?
Didn't have them side by side to compare, but it felt fairly similar. The AI/Subject detection is much improved on the VI, but point AF felt pretty much the same.
Try using Capture One whatever film simulation that you’re using. Capture One will carry those settings over to the RAW so you can preview the simulation set on your camera.
I think your analysis was fair and super well-balanced and people should be aware of these things. Good job.
much appreciated
Best option I've found for doing video on Fuji with a loud lens (and internal mic), is to use AF-S and focus with the shutter button as needed. You can also manual focus in this mode but not with focus peaking, which is a downside of how Fujis are set up. On Sony you can assign a button to intantly autofocus from within MF mode, but not Fuji AFAIK.
If you do it like this at least the lens isn't hunting and making tons of noise.
Great review! Im wanting this camera as a travel/everyday camera for personal use because carrying around my nikonz7 and 6ii are not feasible. Is there another AMAZING compact camera you would recommend over this one? Im afraid it won't arrive before my trip at the end of June. Some things I love about it are the retro film set up for controls, the in-canera film recipes, and the compact design/fixed lens.
Look for a used X100V instead!
Unfortunately, I’m not having much luck. All of the prices seem to be in the $1700-$2300 range which is more than the new one. 😢
The video we all needed, but didn't want to watch. Thank you so much, I will be holding off on buying, was super interested in the video...
Happy to help!
So which pocket compact camera would you recommend for photography & videography both purposes?? I was soo much looking forward to buy this one, but now again in dilemma after your video..
X100v is easier to get on the used market if you still want the Fuji. Or xt5 is the same camera without many of the shortcomings.
A7cii with the 24mm G is also incredibly capable, just doesn’t have quite the same “vibes” as they say
Leica’s Q series is excellent.
@@kylemeshna Ok. Will look into those.. But those are not pocket compact cameras.. Although x100VI is also mirrorless, but then also it comes with a very good quality fixed focus lens which makes it very nice pocket compact cam.. So do you have any such recommendation? Like a very nice camera which can be carried everywhere without need of lenses etc, a camera which is equally good in photography as well as video.. Do you have any such recommendation??
SO all those things you wish you knew before buying this camera: were displayed on the website. I like how people buy expensive things and still complains about them.
As far as video goes, put it on a gimbal and call it a day. That's where this camera shines. I love how you can assign the ND filter to a button so you can go from indoors to outdoors without cranking the shutter. I think most video guys will use an external audio recorder and use the cameras built in audio as a scratch track but if I wanted to go direct in cam, a 3.5 to 2.5 cables is like 7 dollars which is pretty cheap. I agree, the lack of battery charger is annoying but other brands are sadly doing this as well like the Sony A73, A7C, A6700, Lumix S5-2, Nikon Zf etc..
PolarPro have this Fujifilm X100VI Filter Adapter (Pre order) that is designed to work with stock lens cap. Or just get any 49mm lens cap which doesn't cost much.
wow thanks for the Lightroom trick for simulations!
Thanks for this, think I'll hold out for the X-Pro 4 - that audio port is a bit mental!
Great review. I bought the Fuji grip which makes it fit like a glove. I agree that the editing time for “clarity” is so annoying because I love the clarity effect. But too slow so I’ve disabled it. I love HEIF files ( I never shoot RAW) but the HEIF files do not transfer to my iPad using the Fuji app. If you could persuade Fuji to amend their app to allow transfer of HEIF files that would be awesome. Thanks again!
On the filters, stupid question, but did you try any magnetic filters?
Great points 👍
Is there a lens cover that you found that fits once you put on the filter ?
Wow - that video really put things in perspective that everyone seemed to be avoiding.
HEIF does support 16 bit, but the X100VI takes a 10bit HEIF. Actually more preferable though as RAW photos are usually 16 bit. 10 bit is a good medium.
I am not sure, but the lens of the 1st generation in the X100 line... doesn't have the same focus hunting and noise, does it? Also, it featured an internal focusing design, didn't it?
Finally a real review and not another love letter to Fuji… it’s getting tiring to listen to that every time I’m in CZcams
Thanks, dude! I´m currently in that same accessory vortex 😅. Great camera though.
I'll take a recipe video. I have the V. Love it and love the channel
On it!
@@kylemeshnacan you add a “clean look” crisp recipe. Like not film. Keeps color true but looks clean. If you know what I mean
@@kylemeshnamainly to take pics of hikes and mountains, but keep the beauty of it without too much of a film look pls. I want recipes similar to your mountain pics in this video For x100v Pls😅
Been waiting since Feb 20th for mine to arrive and sold my 100V but now considering the Leica D lux 8, which could arrive around the same time .
This is enormously helpful. As a result of this review I’m going to get a XT-5 instead. Or at least in addition.
Xt5 feels like the right move. You’ve got everything the x100vi has, but also better in basically every way 😅
@@kylemeshna Except the size and weight. Crucial for carrying a camera around all day on the street. Don’t forget you need to have a lens for your XT5 so add that to the co$t of the XT5.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@@martingreenberg870 it’s not much bigger, can use the compact primes, if size is an issue, and currently is only about £200 more with a good zoom here in the U.K.
XT5 does not need fancy filters, lens hoods, thumb grips, will work with fewer batteries and if you choose you lenses well can probably use your existing filters.
I have the new VI but have not used it as it’s likely to go back to the shop this week. After spending another £250 on bits and filters at Amazon (all to be returned), it was close to £1900.
For that I can get the XT5 and the good quality 16-80 kit zoom, then add a couple of pro end primes later on. Battery life, dual card slots, better screen etc all make the XT5 a better photographer’s camera. Hey, the Princess of Wales apparently uses one so maybe the XT5 will be the new fashion item of the vlogerarty….
Yes the VI in black is very beautiful to look at but ultimately it’s a tool not a necklace.
@@martingreenberg870I already have an ok stash of Fuji primes. And I think the weight difference is not all that great.
@@andrewcrossley2448
Of course the XT5 is much bigger with the 23mm f2 attached...
What's the tripod mount you have on the camera at 4:32?
Peak design
Thank you! This was so helpful! The lens noise is probably the dumbest reason to pass on this camera, but it was one of the reason I returned the SX-20 with the 27mm lens combo. That lens is so loud, it reminded me of the old Canon 50mm 1.8 from 15 years ago. I could not wrap my head around why it has to be so loud in 2024. The fact the x100vi has the same issue makes me think twice about pulling the trigger. Its also a bummer that the recipes take so long to save to the SD card, that was something I ran into with the SX-20. Sigh. Its still a beautiful camera.
Don't use clarity then.
Honestly the trade-off of a fixed lens for a smaller form factor just is never worth it to me - if I had money to burn and this could be a 3rd camera maybe - but otherwise a bit bigger camera with interchangeable lenses is my 'sweet spot'...
I was considering the Fuji 100X when it was introduced 13 years ago. I bought a Canon Ixus instead. After my initial assessment I understood that this gadget is not for a pragmatic lazybone like myself.
Until quite recently, I fell for a second-hand Leica M10. It looks like Leica because it is one. Not a wannabe.
Very thorough. and you didnt even mention the lack of sharpness
Hi Kyle, why do you own both a X100VI and Q3?! I'd sell both and get a M11 with a 28mm and 35mm. . .
I wanted to test both extensively and figure out which one is better suited for my need. Plus I think, given making videos like this is kinda my job, it's important to be comfortable and knowledgable with as many camera systems as possible so I can make better videos for yall. I think the Q3 is the one I'll be keeping as my daily camera, but that's a topic for another vid
When you do, please add your opinion on the leica looks on the q3.
A new M11 with new 28 Lux and 35 Cron is around $20K, though. Used X100VI would sell for $2.2K, Q3 for $5.5K, so you that's an extra ~$12K difference. I guess if money is no object, and you don't mind the loss of extreme close focus, autofocus, and a built-in EVF, then go for it :)
Is the autofocus audible through internal mics when recording video?
What are people expecting? Anyone who complains about the extra cost of accessories, I mean what do you want? Do other cameras come with a grip or lens hood or battery charger, and extra batteries? I mean if you buy lets say a sony a7iv which is $2500 just for the body, it comes with absolutely nothing. You buy a sony lens for 1k+ of course it comes with a lens hood, but you've spent over $3500 now. Not to mention having to buy an additional nd filter. Also, sure some cameras are "weather sealed" but if you're not buying the $1-2k+ range lens and buying cheap couple hundred dollar lens, they are not weather sealed so it's pointless..
People need to understand this is a secondary camera, that compliments your main camera. If you're hoping to get this because of the social media hype, you're already in the wrong market from the beginning.
You can buy cameras as a "kit" with a kit lens: they have good enough grips to hold the camera, long enough battery not to require spares to get through a day of photo taking, weather sealing as standard, ability to add filters without extra accessories, a lens hood, etc, etc. When did you ever need to buy an accessory in order to be able to use your existing filters? - that's something valid to mention.
That's the thing, most reviews make it look like it's a great primary camera to do everything, that's just not the case, it's an accessory for your existing camera :)
@@DigiDriftZone That's the thing most reviewers do not understand what this camera is for, it is a hobbyist b roll / travel compact.
Once again, a camera that has those specs with the "kit lens" will range you over $2500. Not to mention terrible glass for kit lens, unless you op for the above $3000 kits. So would you rather spend $1600 + $200 worth of accessories or $2500+? Why do people not understand this? If this camera is anyone's first "high" end camera, buy something else. You don't understand it, and don't need it.
I get that most cameras come weather sealed. But did you know that if you buy a lens that isn't weather sealed it's self. It literally will get damaged? So buy a $50 weather seal kit or a $800+ lens that's weather sealed?
@@WhatThePheel I agree for the most part but let me push back about price. For example, X-S20 with 18-55 f/2.8-4 kit lens (much better lens in my opinion) is £1.3k on e-infin, an X-100VI is £2.1k. Replace the kit lens with something like a 27mm pancake that is weather resistant and you can bring the price even slightly lower. It will be just as compact for all intents and purposes and solves nearly all the problems with the X100VI: better battery, better grip, weather sealing (or great flexibility), ability to use filters, much better for video, etc, etc, etc. But it won't have the retro dials and won't look quite as pretty :)
@@DigiDriftZone So we are basing this on the specs that match the x100vi. Of course there would be plenty of options out there with lower specs for a cheaper price. You keep pointing out not being able to use filters, the weather sealing kit can be used with any 49mm filter. It does not require you to use an UV filter to be weather sealed, you can use any 49mm filter for the weather sealing. Also what filter are you using when it has built in ND?
Not sure where you are getting your prices from but the X-S20 is on B&H for $1299 and if you plan on getting the 27mm it adds an additional $399 USD so your total would be $1700 before tax, compared to $1599 USD before tax for the x100vi, so it comes pretty close. But on a second note, if you were to actually get a camera with the same specs than it would be the XT5. The XT5 is $1699 USD + $399 USD for the 27mm = $2100 USD. I guess it's all about preferences of what people view as value. If you are a novice photographer, definitely pick up something under $1000 that has interchangeable lens. If you already have a camera with a plethora of lens, than this would be a great compact travel camera and b-roll camera.
@@WhatThePheel I would question the "lower spec", it's the same processor, same 6.2k but less crop actually, better preamps, better (and articulating) LCD, much better battery, better IBIS, better EVF (though not a hybrid one) and it is interchangeable lenses. Also in dynamic range testing, the XTrans4 sensor gives significantly less noise across the board, has more dynamic range and has advantages in low light. Plus with the ancient lens on the X100VI the practical difference in resolution is barely visible and only at higher F stops.
I'm in the UK, I can't speak to US prices, both the XT5 and X-S20 kits are cheaper than the X100VI making them far more attractive options and the X-S20 is virtually the same size with a pancake lens.
Regarding the clarity setting, it’s a bit of a holdover from a time before the popularity of mist filters. If you want to emulate what clarity is doing, simply use a mist filter instead.
When using negative values. Positive values aren't that at all of course!
Clarity is useful because you still have the unaffected raw file that you don't have when using a filter.
It's not really the same. Clarity just affects mid-tone contrast but does not bloom highlights for example.
@@jorghahn2903 The effect is similar enough if you use a low-power mist filter and can get past the pain point of the clarity-induced slowness.
As an older shooter, I worry that the print on the dials for shutter speed and ISO may be too small to read, particularly in poor light conditions. What's your experience?
Haven’t had any issues but my eyesight is pretty good up close. It also displays the settings on screen and in the Evf though so should be fine
To each their own. Same as cars I like to set it up for my liking; like wheels, rims and stuff. You buy it based on your useage. This camera is based on what you use it for.
True, I just hope those markertes/Fuji paid ambassadors disclose the negative side or talk about the camera in a more balance way. Like most people will probably go with the hype and turn disappointed that it's not really better or as versatile as their smartphone.😅
Had one. Traded it for graphite X-Pro2 & 23 f2 as well as a 35 1.4.
Oh man the XPro2 has my favorite Fuji sensor all time. Recipes feel different on that sensor. Plus the graphite looks 🔥
@@jwanger142 yeah.. I’m stoked. Been looking for one for a LONG time. Traded X100VI for the graphite X-Pro2 with matching 23 f2 and a 35 1.4.
Good point about charging lucky I have a xt3 that uses the same battery and charger also I have a Zf 18mm lenshood
Finally a decent discussion without the hype. I cringe when I see stuff with it tagged but it's IN THE PICTURE... like a fashion statement. Fuji has certainly hit on a formula that the other brands have ignored, so lets hope we get some competition. I wish they would concentrate on stills and skip all the video stuff but that's just me.
It's me too and kinda annoying that we are always obliged to pay for incredible video specs along with what we actually bought the camera for which is just shooting quality photographs.
@@andrewsarchus6036
Since video is merely firmware, you aren't paying more for it, the hardware is the same regardless.
@@JackBurton-qp4hc Oh ya, you never ever get charged for firmware. Like identical Ford Zetec engines where you don't in fact pay anything at all for firmware to unlock different aspects of the engine's potential as part of upgrade packages. Tell me you're trying to troll me. You must be - right?
@@andrewsarchus6036
You fail to understand the point. The hardware, i.e the processor and sensor is the same, so you will not reduce costs by making a camera stills only as it is only in-camera SOFTWARE that does the video encoding, hence no additional cost to the camera.
@@JackBurton-qp4hc No it is you who fail to grasp the point. I've explained it to you and won't be doing so again. If you think you get high spec video absolutely free as a function of the hardware then you carry right on with it.
Where did you get your strap here? Looks cool.
The green one is from a company called Litto Howler. They mostly make dog leashes, but also do made to order camera straps haha. They take a while to arrive though
Great review, I heard a lot of information here, that no else is talking about. Thanks for sharing.
Waiting for you to make a preset to get the REALA ACE look for Sony shooters please 🙏
What if you dont edit , or use the film sims , what is the cameras touch up menus like ?
I’m actually finding autofocus in any mode to be quite horrible. Whilst the green boxes that you see may indicate that the camera has acquired focus and locked on to the subject, closer inspection of the images after the fact show otherwise. I’m left with many of my images mostly front focused, resulting in soft and blurry images which is an absolute deal breaker for me.
I’m really hoping that this is something that is happening to everyone else too because that would at least tell me that it isn’t a QC issue with my camera and will be something that FUJIFILM can fix in a firmware update.
Additionally, I don’t think this lens is actually resolving the full 40MP of this sensor. I’m finding that even with those photos where focus is good, the resolution does not seem to be 40MP. I think the lens is this camera’s biggest bottleneck to truly getting the best of this sensor.
I really want to love this camera, but so far, this issue is a real deal breaker for me.
I did see a comparison somewhere on YT (I don't remember where, sorry) where they concluded that the lens indeed does not resolve the full 40MP
@@legalizemarinara thanks for your comment. I think you may be referring to Samuel Streetlife. I’ve seen that video. I also own the Ricoh GRIII and can tell you that the images out of that little pocket rocket are far superior from an IQ and sharpness standpoint.
I’ll continue to try and refine my shooting with the X100VI for a little while longer and if I’m still finding myself underwhelmed with the images coming out of it, I’ll sell it on.
@@MrAndyGAComing from the x-t30 I am also a bit underwhelmed.
I'm sticking with my X100v.
Warning 8: if you want to buy this camera you’ll be waiting with the masses for their preorder and competing with scalpers that are selling and flipping on eBay for almost double the price. But it still doesn’t matter. It will still sell like crazy.
I’d get the xt30ii. Half the price. Interchangeable lenses. …. Mount a pancake lens and the size is approximately the same….
That’s me .
You're not going to have the same AF performance. That is massively important to me, personally, but maybe not so much to others. So much so that I'm going to be selling my Cybershot rx1r II. Good IQ but AF is terrible. Not to mention 40mp means you have room to crop. As a street shooter, I need to be able to shoot fast and nail focus. The older Fujifilms aren't up for the task.
@@ams914if AF is that important to you then the A7C series would be the better option
@@duvalpenny100
They want 40mpix and presumably a drop in size I guess.
@@zed351 size is similar enough (when the A7C is paired with a small prime). They both are too big to fit in a pocket so most people carry them via small bags or straps anyways. Fair enough on the 40mp. The A7CR has more but it's a lot more expensive than the Fuji.
Still I think if AF is important, Sony A7C (even the mk1) is the way to go.
Zone focus works muck better for street work.
Not coming with a battery charger was a deal breaker for me. That's ridiculous! Glad you informed us on these issues.
You wanted the camera so much that spending €20 on a good dual charger was the deal breaker?
It's a good environmental move and reflects the fact that half of the buyers will already have one. Wish more manufacturers would do this.
But it's the last thing that would determine whether or not to buy any camera.
"Not coming with a battery charger was a deal breaker for me."
smh...
I purchased my Fujifilm X100S in 2014! long before the hype seized the Internet. In 2023, I sent my X100S to Fujifilm in New-Jersey for a clean-up and inspection. They returned the Camera untouched, with a message "out of warranty, no spares". I had spoken to Fujifilm prior to sending it, and was told to send it after filling up a form that does not say anything about which camera they accept. My X100S still shoots as good as I am, and I am going to purchase a Leica Q3 instead of the X100VI.
I had considered a Q3. But I had then to consider what does that mean for my x-t5, which I love.
The x100vi fits because it's compact, limiting, different, quirky. The leica was much bigger at least in the lens department, less refined I felt with the screen and didn't feel like a second camera. Irrespective of price differences, the x100vi fitted better with my overal set-up.
But when I bought my V in 2020, I paid €1100 and they were being reduced in the shops. A Q2 then just seemed so much more also. As soon as shops stopped taking orders I sold it - it was obvious to me a new one was in the pipeline and I didn't want to leave cash on the table.
Then earlier this year I found another cheap V with 200 shots just after the announcement. Thought check if I still liked it. I liked everything but the sensor (never was a fan of the x-t3/4 or x100v sensor) so picked up a VI then sold the V, again for a lot more than I bought as supplies had dried up of the VI.
In total for two Vs, a VI, extra Fuji batteries, charger, Fuji hood, WCL 100ii converter, I've paid about €900.
Considering trading up to a used GFXR50 + 50mm pancake. Should be able to get one for the same as I sell the VI. But would run both in parallel to start. And hope for a true compact to back up the x-t5. An x80 or Limix LXIII would be great.
I think that's the good and bad about the x100vi. It really is fantastic, but at the same time leaves you wanting more.
I have the camera now for 25 Days and can back up all the things you said. Glad a big youtuber saying these shortcomings.
I would add:
--> the Silver AR-100 Adapter dosen´t have the same silver color (40€..)
--> the door to the Input/Output feels cheep, charging thru it you should be careful, camera will only charge while you don´t use it (Adapter 46€)
--> the Joystick feels cheep and pointy
--> Shutter release you have to get used to
--> you have Crop modes but the picture degrade very fast
--> you cant turn off EVF completely, when you press on Play or you are in the options(wrench slot) the EVF will close the OVF
--> Canon R6 with Sigma 35 1.4 (yes Full Frame, 20Mp), is by far sharper, i rather blow up the 20mp file of the R6 than crop in on the 40mp of the X100VI
--> Printing pictures form X100VI to Instax Wide printer don´t work
Tips/Info:
-> for sharper Jepg /HEIF turn High ISO NR to -4, even on 0 there will be noise reduction applied
-> for faster focus, you can put the camera in boost mode
-> if you start to think about adding a Grip, go try the XT5, there are nice lenses
-> you can transfer the pictures (not Raw) via Wlan, its fast, but you can´t theathershoot with Wlan
That said, I enjoy photographing with the X100VI, but it is defiantly not worth an over price.
There is a lot to love about the camera. People acting different when pointing the small camera on them, than the R6. I will keep it. It´s perfect 2nd camera to share around, people have fun taking pictures with it. And for an every day cam it´s great. For paid work i use the Canon R6 with good glass. Just know what you need for what job.
Marking this day down: March 25th, 2024 -- Someone called me a "Big CZcamsr" 🥹
Great points across the board! I will say, I'd prefer a cheap joystick over no Joystick any day of the week. This is still the only compact camera with a joystick (to my knowledge)
@@kylemeshna Your over my Instagram Feed all over too 😀 Agree better a joystick than non, it does the work.
I've had it a similar time and some fair comments, but I think above all you need to remember what it is. It's a compact fixed lens camera - it shouldn't even be compared to an ILC, let alone an R6 with a 1.4 lens! Basically if you really like changing lenses or flexibility of having the option to do so, or have never restricted yourself to a 23 lens before, really carefully consider if this is for you. If I use the x-t5 with one lens only, it's the 23mm, so my motivation was to downsize open up new creative possibilities for those days.
Nothing you said though should be deal breakers for most people approaching this as a minimalist prime only camera for photography, really.
The negative noise reduction is a great tip. When I first moved to Fuji years ago, I really disliked the smoothened output with skin colour bleeding into the eye whites even until I figured this out, and to use capture one over lightroom. Always -2 or below for me. Never had an issue since.
Really curious about your EVF issue though. Maybe this is your setting? My EVF turns off as soon as I move my eye away even in play mode. Sometimes the screen stays physically up (depends on sequence of actions by user) but the display is always off. Play raises the EVF but it is off, switch to shoot and the EVF goes down revealing OVF. However view play in viewfinder then switch to LCD, the EVF stays there but switched off. Quirk of the camera I guess.
It's my second camera to an x-t5. I think the battle for sharpness above character and other aspects of lenses these days is ridiculous, regardless of system. But the x100vi is plenty sharp enough for what it is, especially stopped down to f2.8, and at MFD f4. That's my main complaint really, I have the 23 1.4 LM on the x-t5, so I wish I didn't have to stop this down as I actually prefer the character of the x100vi to that lens overall.
The images don't degrade when you crop in in camera. It's just a crop. Resolution drops, that's it. Naturally in post you can't crop further into the 10MP jpeg taken in camera at 2x mag. but that would be the same with any cam.
Not something that ever bothered me, but you can transfer RAW via the app now. Full Res video has always been possible, so welcome for some I'm sure. I actually find it annoying reviewing images now to have two of everything on my phone!
Personally, I wish the x100vi was an x80. So while I enjoy it a lot, I think it's got almost too close to the x-t5 in features and even size. I'd love a smaller, perhaps even less well specced version.
Will keep on using for now, and will be my only camera this summer vacation, or I might put the 90 on the x-t5 as well, but the news of a gfx version next year has piqued my interest. Bigger, slower, but genuinely different. Will be adding a used gfx50R and 50 3.5 "pancake" (27 1.8 APSC) to see how much gfx is hype say the viltrox 27 1.2 at f1.8 on the x-t5. And importantly which format I prefer for a rangefinder.
Love this camera. Love using a variety of lenses. Hard to balance the two!
@@brownbear100 I think it's still a bit overhyped on the internet, but I am starting to love the camera with its quirks (the EVF is off, but if you press play, it closes the OVF for no reason). I've now had more time with the Fuji X100V. On my recent trip with my cheerleading team, I gave the camera to the girls, and it was perfect. It's easy to photograph with, lightweight, and looks cool. They preferred using the Fuji over the R6 (24-70 2.8). We made some memorable pictures, and they had a blast photographing with it.
For my professional work, I need a full-frame camera with decent lenses, but the Fuji is now my EDC, which I also use as a teaching camera. It's perfect for bike rides, coffee shop hopping, and evening strolls. I can't see replacing the Fuji anytime soon. My wish would be for the Fuji X100 with a full-frame sensor and a 1.4 35mm or 50mm lens in the same form factor, which I know is only a dream and not possible. Rumors say --> GFX with a Fixed lens ^^
Are you telling me that the x100vi doesn't shoot true raw at all? Like we only get options between jpeg and heif?
No it also shoots RAW. Just saying you now also get HEIF in addition to jpg, which has more information than Jpg. Lots of people go nuts for the film recipes, but those aren’t available for RAW
Dual aftermarket charger and batteries are super cheap and now great quality.
Thank you for a very honest, no BS review. It was very refreshing. I have this camera on pre-order, but I decided to purchase the x-s20 since I am more into video than photography. I will probably end up selling the x100vi.
Just cancel your preorder. XS20 is a fine little camera for video etc. as is the XH2 at the pro end. X100VI is really a city shooter and for family shots, but so is an iPhone 15 Pro……
I have one that I ordered on day 1. I have purposely not used it whilst assessing its use case for me, as the dealer will take it back into stock unused. I agree with all your points on extras having spent a lot getting filters, thumb grips, extra batteries etc from Amazon. So far here in the U.K. it has all added up to £1850 and no protective case as yet.
I had a great chat with another Fuji dealer on Friday who is also a studio photographer using Fuji G series. I explained I wanted a high quality small(er) camera than my pro Canon DSLR kit with some weatherproofing and versatility including 4K. He straightaway said send the X100VI back and invest in a Fuji XT-5 and either a pro level prime like the 16/2.8 or the 23/2 to start or one the excellent kit zooms, the 18-55 being the most compact. Fuji publish a useful list of their lenses capable of getting the optimum out of the sensor. A lot of their compact primes do and are significantly cheaper and more weatherproof than the Canon equivalents.
On the other hand I may just stick with my much loved and well used EOS M3,5 and set of Canon M lenses. The Canon UI is just superb and Canon RAW an industry standard.
For a laugh I the other day I used the M to EF adapter on my M5 with the excellent EF 70-300 mk2 and it all worked, lightening fast focus, IS, and gave me a 480mm f5.6 readout. No 4K, weather sealing, recipes etc but great quality for the sensor. Not well balanced but functional…..
It is vital to understand what this camera is and who it is for. And what it isn't. Many people seem to jump on the bandwagon for the wrong reasons, and you see the usual brand fanatics in the comments below with the knives gleefully out that just don't get that this is a go slow thoughtful camera not a pray and spray Sony A9.
The series has always been for street and documentary photography. Which lends it also well for a daily camera to grab and to when you otherwise might have left the camera at home, or for a lighter carry for travel, back up or secondary camera. Photography. For these purposes the lens reacts well enough given it's obvious limitations. And it is a solid optical performer also.
The reasons to get this camera are the leaf shutter for its silence and high speed sync, the OVF/EVF combo (because you'll use it, not because you think it's cool), the built in ND and the size. Looks should be secondary, but of course it's hard not to be drawn to it even if it's not a good partner for you.
It may have reasonably modern video specs, but it has always had video specs reasonably up-to-date for the time. It can't not include video, for marketing reasons. But it is not a video camera. Even if you have never used one before, the compact size, smaller battery, no LM motors in the lens, port placement, UHSI SD card slot should tell you that loud and clear. The potential for overheating in a compact weather sealed camera should also be obvious to experienced users. For those buying their first camera perhaps not, but do your research before dropping such a large sum of money on a camera for looks alone.
If you buy this compact camera primarily for its looks to put in a video rig, then you miss the whole point of the camera and will be disappointed. Go ahead, shoot some b-roll alongside the photography which should be the main reason to get it, but don't buy it primarily for video. If you buy this instead of the X-s20 for video, then it's a vanity purchase.
Some of the negatives pointed out in the video are fair, even if emphasised for dramatic effect. More experience with the camera helps though. I've had mine a month, and have in the past had a V (selling it paid for the VI and then some), and just like with any camera, once you know the quirks, you instinctively start working with the camera not against it.
Film Sims don't slow the camera down as such - you can't shoot without them. But some do need more processing power than others. Looking at you classic neg. Clarity does slow the buffering speed down. There's a quick solution - if this is an issue for you, disable clarity in the custom setting. Or don't add it to certain sims like classic neg. No need to be a martyr, you don't need to use that trending recipe if it impacts your preferred shooting style. Like using it with clarity but want to shoot more quickly because your kid does something cute - switching to low speed burst disables clarity and it's still easy to just take one shot. Bracketing disables it also. Not sure which film SIM suits a custom setting best, you can shoot three different film sims at once and saving the four files (including raw) takes about the same time as saving a recipe with clarity. Can save retaking shots and waiting between each.
The lightroom problem isn't a problem in Capture One, so not really a Fuji issue. Open a raw in C1 and by default the parameters you applied in camera will be applied to the raw as a starting point (you can disable this), so b&w is b&w when opening the raw. It's a better match for Fuji cameras for various reasons. But this is a main one. And C1 worked with Fuji to get as close to the original Sims as possible.
Battery life too is more than reasonable and you can far exceed the quoted battery life - like with most cameras. First of all, you do not need IBIS 90% of the time. So turn it off when not needed. And never have it on continuously, it's not a 500mm Tele prime. Stop playing around with the menus and settings all the time! Yesterday in my lunch hour I took a walk to test some new custom settings out. Did some adjustments using the screen, ibis on shot only, 70 shots and didn't lose a single battery bar. I think these tales of diminishing the battery quickly should be taken with a pinch of salt there's a lot of factors involved, not least whether any video was shot in addition to the shots. But carrying a spare is always good, regardless of camera. Personally, I think it's a good move to not include things like chargers and hoods in the box. Keeps the price down a little, many peoples already have them and for filters etc. that's very personal anyway.
It's far from the perfect camera, and ideally it isn't your only camera. It's not for newbies buying it for the looks. It's not a video camera. But get to know it, accept the weaknesses for what they are and learn to live with or even appreciate the quirks. It's still ok to freak out every now and again when a random setting has disabled another random setting and you can't figure out why, like zone focussing disabling the mini EVF display. But just enjoy the shooting experience, interacting with all those people who ask about your film camera and subjects that are just much more relaxed and less camera shy.
My biggest issue with the camera is the focal length. This is the most important aspect of this camera and is rarely mentioned. Also not here. I used to love 23mm APSC, but now I've moved more to 18mm and 27mm as my preferred focal lengths. Luckily the wide angle converter is tiny and doesn't seem to impact IQ much if at all and the digital teleconverter is nice for a longer perspective. But if you don't usually shoot 23, or are not a fan of the focal length, obviously do not buy. And that includes the commentator below complaining this can neither take selfies or shoot wildlife (no shit Sherlock, but seriously make your mind up which way you are trolling!).
Why are people dissuading beginners from this camera? I want to get for a some upcoming travel and this is the only size I could see myself carrying besides an iPhone camera.
@@SnowBob302Well first up, you can't just walk into a store or order on Amazon and realistically expect to have it even by July. There's a long waiting list and that might impact your trip. Order now and maybe you'll have it by September. Maybe.
But secondly this is about as far away from an iPhone as you can get. There are no training wheels, there's no auto mode. Sure you could put all the dials on A (automatic), but even that isn't full auto, it still leaves you to control a lot that impacts on performance and output.
To get good results out of this camera you need to understand the relationship between ISO, shutter speed and aperture, and how changing one will impact on the other two and why that's important for any given scene and the image quality that results. And so also by how much to change each. White balance isn't just on a sliding scale but adjustments are one a four-way axis and far more nuanced.
Certain things you can leave for later, like the manual flash controls, but from the start you are hands on with all the settings.
Honestly, if someone asks why it's not for beginners that just wants to take some snaps, then I really don't think it's the camera for them. Check out the x-t50 also, you've got a full auto mode to help you out and to progress, and more beginner friendly dials.
The most important thing about a fixed lens camera is? The quality of the fixed lens. Fujifilm has made some improvements, but compared to Leica Q & Ricoh GR3 series it falls short. Additionally I do agree with you, that the battery is a bit of mystery on this one. Bigger sensor, IBIS, improved AI capable sensors.... how do you power it with the current battery. Interesting.
Definitely ageed. I’m gonna do a further comparison against the Q3, but it’s crazy how much sharper the summilux lens is (granted it’s also 3x the price so probably not a super fair comparison)
@@kylemeshna here is food for the brain. I shoot with the Leica Q (2015) the lens is the same as on the Q3 and it is probably the best lens.. it is just magical. Q1 you pick up for 2-2.5K used. Ricoh GR3 series lens is also better in my opinion that the fujifilm lens. Probably not making any friends with my comments :) Enjoyed your episode, keep doing what you are doing.
The Fuji is definitely sharper and better than the Ricoh GR3
@@kylemeshna Probably not a super fair comparison?

@@harshyknuckles1824i have both the x100vi and ricoh gr iii; will say that the ricoh is much sharper, but prefer the fuji experience
Great, none-sensational walk through. I will stick with my x100s, which unlike all the newer models has a relatively quiet AF. I have owned the t and f as well, and already from the t the AF became very noisy.
Are you selling it? I can buy it at the standard retail price
Thanks.
I think the availability issue with the VI is ridiculous... and i still don't understand why Canon or Nikon have not come out with a X100 of their own. It makes no sense to me !
Unfortunately it seems like Fuji is trying to milk the X100V’s hype with this new version. Minimal upgrades for higher cost. You made some excellent points here. And tbh I wish they removed video altogether and invested their efforts to improving other aspects of the camera - better battery, ergonomics, improved menu, better OVF, heck they could’ve even improved the lens. It’s like theyre following on Apple’s footsteps
This camera has everything I don't want. Thanks for the review!
Although all the points are valid and could impact the casual consumer of this camera, for seasoned photographers, sounds like we're fabricating these issues out of a quite perfect little camera which at the end of the day, helps create great images.
I decided to check out this video while waiting for the indefinite delivery date for my order. I think you bring up a lot of great points, but none that makes me regret ordering this camera. Appreciate the honest review! Not many people are talking about this stuff.
Yep. Overhyped for what it’s priced at tbh. Really thinking towards the more reasonably priced gr3.
Priced lower as its much less of a camera
I agree with you, just to summarise and to add a few more gotchas: outdated lens with loud/slow focusing (audible when recording video), 35mm f/3 FF equivalent so no selfies or landscape or wildlife, a bit tight indoors, limited background separation for talking head, lower dynamic range than an iPhone 15Pro (tested by CINED), poor-ish low light performance, no flip screen, poor battery life so you have to buy/bring spares (and potentially remove the tripod plate to swap each time), not great for videography (massive crop in 4k60 or 6.2k, awful rolling shutter, no 3.5mm mic input, ports block grip, drop in dynamic range in higher resolutions), subpar autofocus (improved but far from Sony/Canon), slow performance with film simulations, low resolution hybrid evf, no lens hood / ability to add filters / weather sealing / grip without additional costs, etc, etc.
It’s not for me but it is a very pretty camera :)
Also lens is very outdated, slow focusing speed, image not sharp until f4 despite 40mp compared to gr3. Let's be real for the price they are charging this camera got issues. Despite saying all of that I ordered one as well lol.
The price kinda makes sense from a market value standpoint. People have basically been paying $1600+ for the used x100v up until the release of the VI, so clearly people are willing to pay that price. Further evidenced by how many presale orders they got haha. But yes. Very good point about the lens
Thank you
@@jazzyx95 Why? What is wrong with your GRiii?
When did you preorder? I preordered on the 1st day and may have to wait a year or two for delivery.

Yup - this camera is a Fashion Accessory - I cannot imagine an experienced photographer opting for the tradeoffs - but on TikTok it will rule among influencers (and they will def use the P 'Pro' mode I am sure!)
7:23 HEIF files produced by the X100VI are 10 bits, not 16 bits.
Wow thank you so much. I am canceling my order.
I'd watch Jared Polin's Review a very hard man to please with any camera definitely worth a watch
Yet this is the most successful camera ever sold in the history of cameras, over a million units sold. Dissipate what you did not know before buying, everyone else did. Fyi: Fuji will soon announce the ability to export Film recipes to other cameras and as a sharable Lightroom preset. look for this around May 2024. Keep the Fuji videos coming.
I did sell mine just because it was uncomfortable to hold, you always feel like you are going to drop it.
Especially that slick plastic on the front
This video is not negative, on the contrary, you're telling us about quirks of using this camera, if that's not a positive information I don't know what is. Watching this we now have almost everything in hand to make the purchase consciously instead of being brainwashed by hype and hypers.
The hype is indeed ridiculous. It’s 2024 and the tech in any camera in this price range is more than enough for anyone to create the images they desire. If they can’t, it’s not the camera.
Thanks for the insight..but at the same time some of these points you are just stating the obvious already in the sense that if people do their own research or had past experience with the X100 line..then consumers already know these "quirks" with having or planning to purchase an X100......like your "warning points" you have stated..why would people assume that it comes with a hood when in other videos they already state that they got it afterwards..lol and or the lens is not completely "weather sealed", the grip is small..etc etc..the point of "hidden cost" is not a surprise that goes for other cameras as well..lol I myself have filters, battery grips for my A7RV's I use for professional work..and yes the Clarity setting has to stay at 0..like others have mentioned so you won't have that "buffer/lag" issue..hopefully Fuji fixes that with a firmware update..lol
Somewhere between 55-70% of tech purchasers use CZcams in their product purchasing decision. By making this video, this is helping people do their own research. Again, the camera is great on the whole, but if you were to look at the far majority of videos about this camera on CZcams, you wouldn't think there was any shortcomings.
I have taken 1000-1500 each day with no problem with one battery.
Only Clarity slows the “Storing”.
That should be, “I wish I had known . . .” . Tense is important. No I’m not grumpy because I can’t afford the camera :-).
character count is importanter
I seriously do not get the point of fixed focal length and especially at that price point. Buy a compact interchangeable lens mirrorless, go out with a single lens et voila! You have a fixed focal length camera. One which can be changed to a different focal length the next day or used interchangeably in a single outing. Is it just some ideological purity spiral kinda thing?
Have a look at the size and weight of a 23mm f2 lens.
@@zed351 I have a 20mm f2.8 Nikkor. It's tiny. I have an E series 50mm 1.8. It's tiny. Even the Ais 85mm is pretty small.
@@andrewsarchus6036
....and in comparison of the whole camera size and weight with lens attached compared to that of the X100 23mm f2 it is what then?
Of course it also lacks a leaf shutter and do you have the OVF in that body?
There is more to the X100. You are comparing apples and oranges.
@@zed351 Yeah, it's a little bit smaller and lighter. Guess what? My phone is lighter still. So you seem to me saying that the exact size and form factor of that particular style of camera is literally everything. That's absurd. Well it is to me anyway.
@@andrewsarchus6036
But that is not what is being said. The whole package matters, not just to size and weight.
Way to miss the point.
Yeah so just better get Leica Q3 and call it a day and you don’t have to worry about upgrades ❤ you will have the best images ever
Just the price.
Would you still purchase it knowing all this ?
That‘s what I call an (actually) honest review. Thx! 🖖
I just retro appearance with some film profile simulation. It's like holding a toy in my hand. It's overrated because of good marketing.
I hope ppl now give up on charger, it became new normal that all companies dont put charger with box, camera or Phones. It was old time thing already now
No chargers on a phone is much different than a camera. You can’t take the phone battery out to charge it separately
Having a charger means that you can charge one battery while using the camera with another. I don't like leaving my expensive camera out to charge.
Pretty obvious the OP is referring to the lack of a charging plug/adapter that are no longer supplied with phones.
It's indeed the 6th generation of the X100, and it's still far from perfect. It's sad, really. It seems like the only Fuji success stories are the flagship X-T series. It only gets better.
