Lyrics:
If the stack is high against you
And the hammer's coming down
And the time that's yours lies heavy in your hands
Oh my sentimental friend
The fast much reach an end
Lying face down on the cold stone
And they give their all to you
But their all is slipping through your hands
Oh my sentimental friend
Your time will come again
One day where I didn't die a thousand times
Where I could satisfy this life of mine
One small day
One day where every hour could be a joy to me
And live a life the way it's meant to be
One small day
How many times has it turned against you
How many times will they walk away
How many times have you let depression win the fight
Oh my sentimental friend
We'll walk as one again
One day where I didn't die a thousand times
Where I could satisfy this life of mine
One small day
One day where every hour could be a joy to me
And live a life the way it's meant to be
One small day
How many times has it turned against you
How many times will they walk away
One day where I didn't die a thousand times
Where I could satisfy this life of mine
One day where every hour could be a joy to me
And live a life the way it's meant to be
One day where I wouldn't feel my senses die
Where nothing made me hang my head and cry
One day where I could see myself as others do
Where I could feel the strength of love at hand
One day where I didn't die a thousand times
Where I could satisfy this life of mine
One day where every hour could by a joy to me
And live a life the way it's meant to be

one of the best things about 50 years old,is the fact that i lived my teenage years in the 80's that is priceless and i am grateful !!!
Absolutely!👍
I totally agree.
I’m your age. The 80s were crap. The Smiths and the Police were good I guess
Me too, agree 👍🏻😘
Exactly!!! I am ok with being 53. I got to grow up with the best music!!!
2024 still rocking to this , wish these times were here again.
Oh my sentimental friend…..
RIP Chris Cross 😢 🎸
Chris. Your legacy will live forever. RIP Brother x
It started with Vienna, now I’m just lost in their music😍 This song is gold!
Wasn't a lover of this track when I was much younger, but as I aged and understood the lyrics more, I've learnt to realise what a masterpiece this is, with very meaningful lyrics.
I actually loved and identified with this song way back then.
But, I've always fought with depression even as a teenager and when I was first diagnosed back then, this was my go-to "Don't give in to that cold, hard b*tch" song.
So......not exactly in our old angsty teenager way but with a REAL diagnosis and meds, lol!😂😉👍❤
Glad to see a fellow 80s kid/teen who knew Emo before it was called Emo!
(We just called it music, right?)
Ultravox, one of most underrated band ever! They rules!
Never underrated to those who knew their music 😉
Performing in Live Aids is "underrated" for you?
Im not agree,U-VOX is not a underrated Band, but just only not "very commercial"....specially from beginning wt John Foxx, later when Midge go in,have much popularity and followers everywhere, and believe me,i saw U-VOX 2 times live......their's not underrated, never.🔝😉👍🤗👋👋👋👋🎸
@@winterland2011 totally agree👍
Ah, they were not underrated. After the release of Rage In Eden in 1981 they reached very quick their cult status.
„Cult-Band“ - typical 80s thing. :-D
' and live a life the way "iITS meant to be" gets me everytime
God I love Ultravox and Midge Ure. His music saved my life too! What an amazing artist
Well done boys. Great music. Great band. I’m still listening. I’m 62 now.
Fun Fact: The place where they shoot the MV for this is the same place where The Care's "My Boyish Days" and The Bible's "Graceland" music video was also recorded. For sure the Callanish Standing stones have been lucky meeting famous new wave bands
Remember when MTV actually played music videos? This was one of the best...Ultravox could play anywhere they chose.
1984 has been an incredible year for music!
I agree, also all '80
Agreed!
one of the best in the 80's.. '83 also.. ;)
Best bands history music between 1975-1990! (In Uk) what unbelievable creativity Ultravox.,the jam,buzzcocks,Joy Division,new order,the smiths,echo and the bunnymen,psychedelic furs,stranglers,pet shop boys,erasure,china crisis,level 42,simple minds,U2,the cure,siouxie and the baanshees, omd,tears for feas,aztec camera...and lot of them im forgetting 😉
@@Nicky-ys6uh ...Depeche Mode (I adore them), Duran Duran, The Police, Genesis, Dire Straits, Eurythmics, Talk Talk, Big Country...and don't forget about the american 'new wave' which includes bands such as Blondie, Quarter Flash, The Motels, 'Til Tuesday...I'm very happy to have lived all these beautiful years!
I remember "how many times have you let depression win the fight?" from hearing this song as a child and still it guides me in adult life x
The song said a lot to me at a critical time in my life. Hymn, Visions In Blue and this song.
I feel the same way
This was always my favorite Ultravox song. I had it on 45 rpm vinyl back in the day. Thanks for the memories!
My favorite too!
Everyone talks about Vienna and I'm always asking: What about One Small Day??!!
This was one of my favorites when I felt like crap, then when I was diagnosed as a teenager with severe depression this song just settled deeper into my bones.
It actually helped me fight harder. Yes it can be taken as a bit defeatist but, pay attention.....it's NOT.
😘💖🫂😉👍
Take care, my unknown Friend, One small day will turn into one BIG day for you.@@badkitty4922
That magical first time I heard “One small day”, years ago: I was 17 and I was innocent, idealistic and so very impressionable. I was an angered, confused young boy, close to resign life. Then, at a so cold and cloudy winter afternoon, when I was doing a hard, complicated high school homework with a classmate for which I had complicated feelings; we were at his place (He was living alone because his parents was living in another country). Suddenly I start to heard that incredibly romantic, powerful and heroic lyrics with that sweet, juvenile, brave melody and, therefore, I recovered my lost wish to living, to feeling; I recovered my desire to feel the cloudy days light, these cold airs and have the power to react to all that with the renewed force from my strong youth. As else older commentors said before me: that was a magical age. How lucky people who was young in those haunted years.
.
You are an excellent writer, my friend!
When I first heard this I killed my rabbit, and made a stew. That's how good this song is.
So you liked the song.
The soundtrack of my youth, Looking back ... no regrets ... just hard to look back 😕
Bought this as a single when I was 13. It's a hymn that never fails to lift me up.
I'm in my early 40s now, and this song still motivates me to face the world with all the sensibility and thoughtfulness I never lost throughout the years. Timeless.
This song saved my life. Thank you Midge
Shauna your story may be very personal and frought with pain so I won't ask. I just want to say I'm glad you found a lifeline. I'm glad you're still with us. Thank you for being Shauna.
I understand Shauna. In my darkest days, this song kept me going too.
This song and another by a rather unknown band "sHEAVY" with their Ultraglide song, both tracks inspire us to keep going, many thanks to both bands. Here's Ultrglide with lyrics, incase you wanted to have a listen. czcams.com/video/3gDg9CECcd8/video.html
Shauna, hai tutta la mia stima e il mio affetto.
What do you mean saved your life?
It's amazing how a year can change your life people. I wrote the comment about how I was 61 and born in 61 and yet 6 months after I made this comment this song literally was my lifeline to staying sane. The incredible pain I was in from a car accident, rear-ended, cost me not only the job as a driving instructor but my family is well because incredible pain makes you a miserable bastard. A month after they left me I found myself homeless sleeping in my car, advance into a shelter that a homeless dog shouldn't be placed in let alone a human being then finally another shelter for 5 months that was more like prison with the work release program .
I'm thrilled that I'm no longer homeless or displaced and I hope that Midge or members of Ultravox read this because THIS SONG, I listen to almost every single day to get through the day. By the grace of God one day before the shelter was about to kick me out into a second bout of homelessness an apartment owner I'd called months before called and told me the unit was available... 😳👀🫂🙏🏾🙏🏻
Think about that... one day before 2nd homelessness. Thank you Ultravox, thank you Midge Ure.
"ONE DAY, where every hour could be a joy to me, and live my life the way it's meant to be, one small day..."
Ultravox, one of the best bands of the 80's new romantic era, so good and such quality they still sound good today, if they released this again it would fly up the charts!!! good video too.
I doubt it would fly up the charts. It doesn't have talentless reality 5 minute wonders performing it, it wasn't produced by Simon Cowell, has actual musicians not scanty clad bimbos singing it and doesn't include black people saying nigger in the lyrics (because only they can). I'm so glad I was born in 1962 and experienced the 80's. Best decade in music ever
totally agree
This is a great song, would still sound good and contemporary if released today.Brilliant band from what seems such a happy era, the 80's. Ah nostalgia!!!
This song has the ULTRAVOX magic and the album Lament is the same.
The sort of music they don't make anymore. Still, after hearing these gems, it's so good.
I was recently reintroduced to Ultravox and Midge Ure's solo music. I forgot how much I loved their music. They should have been much bigger and had a broader audience here in the US. Absolutely underrated here. And they are fantastic! As someone said below, I think this particular song would be a big hit if it were re-released. Great song! I love Midge's guitar work and his voice too! Can't stop listening now. I listen to them every day.
Ultravox, one of the best bands of the 80's their music still sounds great today!
One day where I wouldn't feel my senses die,
Where nothing made me hang my head and cry
One day where I could see myself as others do,
Where I could feel the strength of love at hand.
I turned 17 the year this came out in 1984. When I hear the absolutely awful music of today in things like tik tok videos and what not, I am SO grateful that I was a teenager in the 80s!!!
Amen my friend I was as well
We all are! lol. 😂🎧📻💿🎸🎸🎶
An outstanding band. Midge Ure, what a genius and musician. Classic stuff
ULTRAVOX, MIDGE, WARREN, CHRIS, BILLY, ALL OF THE 4 IN ANY ORDER..... LOVE ULTRAVOX... ALWAYS AND FOREVER...
My happy song 🎵 ❤
Love ULTRAVOX ❤️🎵
A true poetic sentiment of resilience and guts and joyful reaction in the face of meanness, unlooked and undeserved cruelty. The Art of Life.
One of the absolute best songs to come out of the 80's. We need more songs with such a message of hope.
Ultravox always, the best of the best.
I love the sound they went for here. The drums are huge, the guitar tone is massive, and those synth fills are heavenly. It's hard for me to put it into words really. A lot of the 1984 New Wave hits are better than their counterparts from 1983 when all these bands broke through in America. This, "Hands Across the Sea" by Modern English, and "Wonderland" by Big Country are just a few big examples.
I get it and loved those bands for the same reason. I'd add Simple Minds greatest moments to that list as well. Great arrangements, huge production, but you could hear every note with clarity.
the best new wave/post-punk/synth pop band ever...
This is my favourite song from Ultravox because it’s a very uplifting song when I’m feeling down i listen to this song and it cheers me up classic lyrics from Midge thank you
Me too!
Ultravox -- the Best you can get -----Epic ...
one of the classic rock songs ever, the genius !!!
This song is still strong in meaning it gave me time to heal, it brought me hope, a reason to be alive back in my very dark days of 84/86 this song helped me through that time, thank you again Ultravox.
Brilliant song, excellent video ! Such a talented band ! So thrilled that we are so lucky to still be able to enjoy Midge and his great songs when he does tours.
I have the ski goggles Midge has on his left
arm. Chris and Midge were guests on the Saturday morning show The Multi Coloured Swap Shop and one of the prizes for various questions were those goggles (and he did say they were cracked). Still got them in the loft somewhere.
Always thought that Warren really wanted to be somewhere else as he looks freezing.
Ultravox: The Collection - what an album
Lyrics strike a chord. Life’s easier now than it was 30 years ago but I still clench my fist when I hear this.
I remember when this song came out, the words has a lot of meanings.
One of my one small favourite's by this amazing band ... thank you Ultravox !!!
Incredibly sad news tonight of the passing of Chris Cross, bass player with Ultravox. The version with John Foxx in the 1970s was one of my favorite bands. They played their last shows in March 1979 at the Cuckoo's Nest and The Whiskey. John Foxx went solo and the rest continued on with Midge Ure as the singer. Once Gary Numan and Human League had success as synth bands, John Foxx and Ultravox MK2 had more success and hits in the 1980s.
Musica FANTASTICA che ha accompagnato la mia gioventù. Ultravox forever.
To Midge Ure and the crew, we salute you for your timeless music :).
Ultravox at their best!
Best Ultravox-song by far!
The bass takes the cake in this song I just love it
Yeah, Chris's bass is something fantastic! He should have had more recognition for his bass playing, but as much as I also liked Mark King, a huge amount of attention was on Mark King back in the day. But Chris could get a really brilliant bass line in.
Saw Midge at Bents Park in South Shields couple of weeks ago. He did loads of Ultravox stuff and can stIll rock out
A classic song that sums up our current situation, we will overcome covid 19 and live again!
🤣🤣🤣
If only all songs were this good...
Ever love this great song. What a singer and his band. This song will never come back. THANK YOU
It's amazing how this describes my life. Thankfully, that day is nigh.
When you look at this video and think the progress we've made with drones and time-lapse since, imagine what it could look like now. Forward thinking camera work. Also this seems to be the band moving on from fun, cartoony acting in their videos, looking and sounding here more like Echo and the Bunnymen or Psychedelic Furs.
RIP Chris. died age 71. I think the music and the songs ...New wave.I was born 1968 Germany.
64 yrs young and fkn lovin this still.
61, born in 61 and STILL ROCKING the Vox LOUD n PROUD
2019, and still such an awesome song. Too bad this video has the volume too low.
RIP Chris Cross - gone but not forgotten!
I bet these songs resonate many in the 80s.
One of my favourite guitar solos of all time.. Totally original!.. Midge🙏🎸
Look up the 1970s Ultravox with John Foxx as singer.they were punk/synth.the Midge version are metal/synth.both versions are superb.
One of the best bands ever💗
Listening to the words of this song after nearly 30 years when I first heard (I'm 50 now), my eyes went wet...
I agree that Ultravox was underrated.. When I discovered them back then, I felt I had discovered a band so beautiful and unique..
For me, i'm a single voice, we are n°1
Magnificent lyrics and uplifting rhythm.
what an awesome song.
I will never forget the concert in 1986 at the Teatro Tenda in Bologna, it was memorable! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
This song changed my life!
I'm amazed this song only got to number 27 in the charts
Ultravox has a special place in my heart!
I was at that place just this morning! The band is at a smaller stone circle, a few minutes from the main circle by car. Beautiful place.
Part of it was filmed at main circle also
If you could only listen to one Ultravox song, it would have to be this one.
Great song from Ultravox, it sounds still so fresh.
U2's War (1983) LP had been a substantial success. Ultravox tried to be, er, 'inspired' by its lyrical and musical themes.
You got it. Great song none the less
OMG Warren Cann at 1.18/19 Oh I looove him my favourite man of all time . Remember the first time i saw a pic of him on their Album Cover. when I was like 9 years old. Warren is someone iv'e liked all my life and always will lovely to see him and the rest of the band as I remember them.
This was very underrated when it was released people said it sounded like Big Country's Wonderland but can't see it myself. It was very good live as well should have done better in the charts but that is Ultravox all over.
Lenny Russell Plus how is that an insult
I can't see a resemblance either, perhaps people were merely comparing them because they were both in the charts at the same time,in February 1984. Wonderland got to number 8,which was fine by me as I do like a good blast of Big Country, and One Small Day reached number 27.
Hawkwind, Dave Brock's guitar sound actually
Never listen to Big Country, its just nothing to compare, maybe they are good, but not the level of Ultravox
Ultravox came first. With John Foxx in the mid 70's. Midge Ure joined in 79, and "Vienna" was released in 1980. Big Country formed in 1981, "Harvest Home" wasn't released until 1982. So, just to be clear, although they sound NOTHING alike and both we're great bands, Ultravox came first.
GREAT CLASSIC COLLECTION
Que recursos con éste vídeo!!!!
Simplemente inolvidables y maravillosos........años maravillosos!!!
Ultravox, has been part of my newromantic life since ever!
I love this song. I remember exactly where I was when I heard it for the first time.
Loved the Live Aid performance of this song. So great.
Unforgettable!
Was my favourite song of all since 40 years ago when i was 15. Speaks to me of our Hope for Heaven. (I think it only got to 27 in the charts)
it is now one of my top 3, along with Where the streets have no name (U2), and Mission (Rush)
Was lucky enough to see them live several times. Happy days, loved their music ❤
💪🏾🇯🇲💥🇺🇸🙏🏾
☺️😍😲😧😎🤩🥰😏😝🤪😍☺️
61 born in '61 and STILL ROCKING the Vox, LOUD n PROUD.
Such a beautiful song.
I love this song for years
Warren Cann here sounds much like in "Images of Heaven"... Love it!
Descansa en paz gran Criss Cross.
One of my favourites! Love it!
At the age of 57, I'm still finding new ways of living life the way it's meant to be. 40 years and counting!
{... how many times does she turns against you, how many times does she walk away...} Thank you Ultravox for remembering the principles!
I think I love ❤️ all of their songs. Midge is such a brilliant song writer but I think this comes near my top 10 Ultravox songs.
Definitely 1 of their best. Midge ure, multitalented and top guy.
