Bypass USE SETUP CARTRIDGES message on HP Officejet 6978, 6962, 6968, 9015 Printer

- This happens a lot on many HP printers when you buy a printer from a returns lot, there is a good chance someone returned the printer without setup cartridges. Then, the printer will not work unless you put the SETUP cartridges that came with printer are not installed. Well, this is how to clear that message and let your printer do the printing with standard HP or remanufactured cartridges. And if my pronunciation of the word "cartridges" annoys you, bear with me. NOTE: In some cases, the Support Menu may not appear, which is not a big deal. Just remove the ink cartridges, restart printer, try pressing return key four times, if that doesn't work install your used or standard ink cartridges and try again.
This tip works with many HP printer models, some of which are:
HP Officejet 6978, 6962, 6968, 6950
Officejet Pro 6830
HP PageWide 57750dw, 57750, 477dw,
HP OfficeJet Pro 7740
HP OfficeJet Pro 8035, 9010, 9015

For anyone who happens to have an HP 7155 (where there is no OOBE option) I found the solution to this error message - hit Home button, then Back button twice, then Home button (nothing changes on the screen so you just gotta go with it...). Open the lid, take out both cartridges and close it. It should error saying "no cartridges found" or something of the like. Open the lid and put the cartridges back in. Printer will run diagnostics and print a test page if it worked right. Why some printers require this extra step is beyond me but it's annoying....yet now I have a pretty slick WiFi printer so I'm happy :)

Wow! I have a never used Office Jet 6975 (bought at Sam's) a couple of years ago. I read the comments and realize I may have trouble with this model but it is nice to think there may be a work around. There was no problem with your pronunciation of cartridges, BTW. Thanks for posting the video.

I had trouble getting to the home menu, the trick for me on the 9015 was doing this with no cartridges in it at all. Thank you so much for your video. You were more helpful than 3 hours worth of phone calls to 3 different HP reps. I asked them several times to send me set up cartridges and they just kept mailing me more ink. Finally I talked to somebody and they said they were not able to send me set up cartridges at all. So basically HP had no answer for me.
I even talked to tech support on a live video chat and they couldn't figure this out. If he would have just told me to take out the cartridges it would of worked.

I’ve been working on replacing toner on 9015 - even with this tip, but with no luck. Thought it was going to print test page. Sounded like it, but no luck. Any other suggestions?

Could you follow the steps mentioned below-
1. Touch the Home button once, then the Back button twice, then the Home button once.
2. Open the ink cartridge access door, and then close it. A Load Paper message displays on the control panel display, and the printer begins initializing.
3. If the initialization does not begin, repeat steps 1 and 2 until it does.
4. Follow the prompts on the control panel display to complete initialization.

Thank you for the video! It was awesome and very instructive! I had to setup a new HP 6978 today that was a factory warranty replacement. It did come with the setup cartridges, but because of a massive problem with instant ink (Instant Ink on cartridges) gouging me for service, I didn't want to use them, and I prematurely threw them away not knowing I might need them. I did have regular ink and used those. After a couple of tries, it worked perfectly!

I had to replace the PrintHead on an OfficeJet 8620 after 9 years of fairly light duty (3,358 total page count). I missed the instruction that said I must install the new Set-up cartridges it comes with. Naturally I thought I'd finish off the old ones before installing the new ones. Except the printer kept entering a calibration/alignment cycle that wouldn't end. Even after 2 hours.
Worse still, when I swapped over to the Set-Up cartridges, it came up with "Do not use SETUP cartridges"! And when I swapped back to the old cartridges, it told me to reseat the printhead and to inspect for leaks.
Anywho, your instructions on how to enter the Support Menu and switch OOBE mode came in handy. I had to toggle it and pull the plug on it a few times to get it out of the loop, but it's working again! Hooray!

For HP 6220, remove cartridge, unplug, plug and hold HOME button, new firmware was downloaded (you need to connect the printer to the network through HP Smart app), once new firmware is installed, prompt will indicate no cartridge installed. Turn it off, and re insert cartridge. Turn it back on, it should calibrate the inserted cartridges and message will say Original HP cartridges installed

THANK YOU. This just solved the problem I had with my HP OfficeJet Pro 8025. I set it up months ago & it was working just fine til one day I found a blue error screen. Restarted it, unplugged it, just to find this stupid "Use SETUP Cartridges" message. I obviously do not have these "setup cartridges" anymore (actually never had them, I received the used printer from a family member) so I was very annoyed.. So Thanks!!

I cannot believe this worked!!! I was on the HP Chat line for over an hour and by the end of the conversation they said they were going to mail me a new starter cartridge in a few days :-(

I first followed your instructions to do the factory parochial reset. Which it did. But after selecting my language and country, I get the message that I have to enroll in go insta ink… which I don’t want. And now the tray with the ink Cartridges will not slide across. How do I override this message and get the ink cartridge tray to slide across so that I can install the original HP ink cartridges that I have.

Can you please help me? Initially all cartridges except magenta was not detected. I reinstalled the driver and hp smart and reseated the cartridges and now it can't detect the black, even after reseating and following the steps in the video. In fact it had already been set to disabled.
perfect...ive had my 6970 for a couple years all of a sudden it decided to make me set it all back up who keeps set up cartrdges haha
for example if my printhead fails and i buy a new printhead (not from original maker but 3rd party printhead) and they not inclulde setup cartridges, and i just obtain some setup cartridges from ebay will they work in my printer? ... i dont know by the way if i have to initialize new printhead or not so i might writing nonsense :)
Hi. Usually you just install a new printhead and it is ready to print. No initialization required

This video is very helpful. I, too, bought a returned HP officejet pro 6975. I've only got one problem - from the get go the little bluetooth blue light on the screen of the printer does not flash as your does so I can't get to the first step. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have an HP 8715 and had to replace the printhead. My cartridges are nearly new, all at full capacity. I tried the process shown in the video (several times) but I'm still receiving the error message, "USE NEW CARTRIDGES FOR SETUP". I really like my printer and have already invested nearly $300 in ink and printhead. Any ideas? Thank you.

Hi, I have an HP officejet Pro 6978 printer that was working fine until I got a message indicating the black ink cartridge was low. I removed and replaced the black cartridge with a genuine replacement I got from Staples. The cartridges are still within the expiry period. The printer stopped printing black after that. There are other reports of people having the same issue. I removed the printhead and cleaned it thoroughly and tried unplugging the machine and still it won't work .I never subscribed to the HP instant ink program and have replaced the cartridges in the past without any issues. If the printhead has failed and needs replacing I can easily do that and I have already sourced that replacement part. However, I do not know if that is my actual problem and may just waste money buying a new printhead. I have had this printer for two years and it was not overworked. What I would like to know, can HP remotely disable my printer and stop it from functioning. I have read where people had their printers disabled when they stopped using the HP instant ink program even though they replaced with genuine HP replacement cartridges. Any useful information regarding my situation would be appreciated.

My printer keeps playing a video of installing the cartridges. I haven't used HP in it for over two years and now all the sudden is pulling this crap. it's hooked up to my computer and i have the security off for the HP only cartridges.

@@303electronics yes and now it won’t do anything. We’re just going to go buy a new Canon. I’ve never had issues before and now all the sudden this. My computer has it on OFF for security ink and it still is just the video, it won’t let me go into settings at all.

Not sure, but you can try to put the printer into the setup mode and see if your printer accepts the setup cartridges. I haven't tried that, but I dont see how it can hurt the printer. Worst case is that the printer won't accept the cartridges and you can take the pr ok enter to normal mode then.
