    ---
When a new or used HP OfficeJet printer is obtained you may observe the ‘#USE #SETUP #CARTRIDGES’ alert message with your HP 902 or 902XL cartridges. Typically the Instant Ink Setup H cartridges are required to reinitialize the printer and will not allow use of HP OEM regular or extra large tanks, 3rd party aftermarket or refilled HP original ink cartridges to function. However, if the original Setup cartridges are not available, you may bypass the lockout message by performing the following steps:
    1. Navigate to the SUPPORT MENU by pressing the Return button 4 times in a row (Note: the Return button will not be illuminated but is located at the bottom left of menu).
    2. Under SUPPORT MENU, scroll down to the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION MENU.
    3. At SYSTEM CONFIGURATION MENU, select OK.
    4. At the TRADE OOBE MENU, select OK.
    5. At the TRADE SUPPLIES DISABLED MENU, select OK.
    6. HP OEM regular, aftermarket or refilled ink cartridges may now be used in the printer.
Note 1: In some cases, the SUPPORT MENU may not initially appear, you may need to first remove the ink cartridges, restart printer, then press the RETURN key four times. If this still does not allow access, then reinstall your used or standard ink cartridges and try again.

    For #HP902 #printer systems and associated #ink #cartridge #errors such as: “ cartridge #problem ”, " #Incompatible ", “ #Missing or #damaged”, " #Failure " “Ink #Cartridges Problem”, #Depleted or “ #Remove and #Reinstall the indicated cartridge” the #printer may #fail to #detect the #HP902 or #HP902XL cartridge’s electronic #smart #chip which is affixed to the rear side of #cartridge or the ink cartridge’s #plastic restraining #tab is not properly #locking the cartridge into the printer’s #PRINTHEAD assembly.
To confirm cartridge to printer #connectivity you will want to first confirm that the cartridge is fully locking into position and cartridge’s plastic tab is properly aligned and providing adequate tension. Remove the suspect ink cartridge from the printer and gently pull out on rear restraining latch to ensure it is extending away from cartridge body. Be careful not to bend the tab out more than 1.27 cm or approximately half of an inch (0.5” in.) as pulling on the plastic tab too hard could cause the tab to break off - so please be gentle with it.
You should also inspect cartridge’s smart chip for ink residue or scratches - thoroughly clean surface with a damp cloth or towel.
For printers that display #error #messages such as “ #incompatible cartridge”, “ remove and re-install cartridges” or “The following cartridges are #not #intended for #use in this Printer” then it is possible that a newer version of HP printer #firmware may have been installed onto your printer and the cartridge chip or chips are now #locked #out. A new chip will need to be installed.

    HP 902XL Yellow (T6M10AN140)
    HP 906XL Black (T6M18AN140)
NOTE: If the error message ‘ PRINTHEAD PROBLEM ’ or numerical printhead code is observed on the printer, it is suggested you remove all four cartridges and power off the printer. Power on printer and reinstall all four cartridges to see if it clears. If the problem persists then the internal PRINTHEAD may be electrically damaged or at end of life. In the majority of cases complete printer replacement is usually required, since the PRINTHEAD is not a consumer replaceable part.

A few items to consider here: Are the Installed cartridges Non-HP OEM ink cartridges...i.e. current or previous generation aftermarket or refilled cartridges installed? Or possibly, HP OEM Original cartridges are installed but they are now several years old with OUT OF DATE (obsolete) smart chips installed (and are no longer compatible with the current printer software version). Updating the printer to the latest software version will usually allow both HP NEW and NEW AFTERMARKET cartridges to function ok since chip versions are usually updated each year. ....but may disable older cartridges with older generation chips, unfortunately.
Accessing the deep service level menu sometimes allows you to unlock select printer/cartridge error conditions, but not always. UH

If you take a flashlight and look behind the printhead/carriage assembly, you will see an encoder strip (very thin plastic reader) that runs the width of the printer...don't touch that as it is very delicate. Just behind the encoder strip you should see a belt hooked onto a gear at the left and a spring on the far right. See if you can carefully reach in there and pull the carriage out by gently applying and pulling FIRMLY on the belt to the LEFT. If not, then the service station underneath the issue could have a motor problem.
Also,...have you attempted to clear the printer back to it's Factory Default settings?....this might just be a printer firmware hang issue. Here is the basic procedure for that (varies my specific printer model):
Press return arrow 4 times Press support menu Press right hand arrow 3 times to system configuration menu (or locate Default Factory Settings menu) and press ok Press right hand arrow 2 times to ink initialization status and press ok Press ok to clear.
Good luck! -Thank you. ;). UH

Check cartridge connectivity & chip compatibility (new versions, either HP OEM original or Aftermarket new chips are usually required). Thx!
