The opening credits for the drama about a New York ad-agency in the 1960s. The song is 'A Beautiful Mine' on the 'Magnificent City Instrumentals' album by RJD2
If you enjoy: 1. Drama; especially period Dramas 2. Exquisite production design 3. Pop culture references in movies and series 4. Extremely well written shows 5. Fantastic acting from a fantastic cast 6. and you especially enjoyed Breaking Bad, The Wire and The Sopranos; You’ll definitely enjoy watching Mad Men.
That's bullshit, Mad Men doesn't have any of those things. Its writing is the same as any other advertisement because that's all it is, an advertisement.
This opening foreshadows the entire series, he starts at the top, everything begins to crumble around him, him falling is showing his downfall throughout the series, there are many pictures of women symbolizing his womanizing ways and cheating throughout the show, he falls through a glass of alcohol showing his alcoholism in the series, he falls past a picture of a family showing is family falling apart, and a hand with a wedding ring showing the divorce and marriage and divorce he goes through. Some might think that this symbolizes suicide but since he doesnt that couldnt be it, also in this intro he is never shown hitting the ground because right before he does it changes to him sitting in a chair showing him finding himself at the end of the show
I think it can also be analyzed that that's everything going on him inside yet and they never show him fall because he is never completely broken and even though he is like that on the inside the ending is what is on the outside how he is usually calm and contempt.
This intro is so good, I mean I watched the entire series and not even ONCE I skipped the intro. It's a show about, among other things, advertisement, so it makes sense the intro makes you want to keep watching the show, it's so good you even enjoy the intro.
I remember how when my mom would be watching this in her room, I would rush in to watch the intro and I'd ask her if the silhouette is okay when watching him fall.
I finished it about a month ago already and I'm craving to watch this amazing series again. I've seen The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad and many more shows in the past year and out of all of them Mad Men has been my favourite. Absolute well written and amazing series.
Another series you might like is "The Americans" which ran on the FX channel. One of the greats with suspense so tight you'll feel as if you're having a stroke. No kidding.
I always found the opening credits reminiscent of Hitchcock. The Saul Bass artwork with the falling man, similar to Vertigo, accompanied by the pulsating strings and chord progression.
The way diamonds can be plucked from the swamp of scripts, and take little known talents like John Hamm and Elizabeth Moss into stardom is so crazy and inspiring
radical rennie I think breaking bad and mad men are different in the sense that I feel Breaking is a great piece of entertainment, while Mad Men is a great piece of art. One show I would suggest for you to watch if you loved Mad Men is Bojack Horseman
Art and entertainment aren’t two completely different things. Film is and has always been another form of art. The writing, camerawork and acting on breaking bad is all phenomenal, no matter what standards you put it up to. The writers and directors conveyed what they wanted to convey, which happened to be to make a kick-ass show full of interesting characters, thrilling plots and mind-blowing cinematography. You don’t need to write off a piece of art as just being entertainment.
It's such an interesting intro, because the silhouette character's body language does not communicate panic or alarm aside from perhaps the last pose despite falling to his death. Otherwise it's all Silhouette Guy (Don) seemingly in a daze, looking around not realizing he's in freefall, trying to take in his surroundings as if he was intoxicated or waking, and seeing nothing but ads and being so overwhelmed by it that he doesn't realize the reality of his situation. It doesn't exactly convey Don's story, but it's so perfect an opening for this show that it's as if an ad man unironically designed it for the series to draw viewers.
This was the first ever "western" show i watched, back when i watched for the first time i barely spoke nor wrote any english, needless to say i had to watch with subtitles and pause every so often, but now roughly a decade later, my english is literally better than my native tongue, plus this show was awesome, oddly enough ive never finished the last season
Well people were jumping out of buildings during the stock market crash in the 30s. Someone did kill themself on the show but not him. Sales is a very tough gig though.
Just finished the last episode of season 7 and now I'm dead. It seems like the dead end. Don't know how to fill the void this show has created in my heart.
Oh wow I have been searching for this because I think my dad used to watch this when I was young so I always had the scene of someone falling of a building like that
I have never heard about this show until just now when I watched an episode of The Simpsons that had a parody of this opening. It was for a Treehouse of Horrors opening. What a great opening!
I watched the whole show because of the intro and emmy awards and because some awesome man said something under this video about how its not about suicide (the intro) but the down fall of his life and the women and the pressure of work...,!! So to who ever said that” THANK YOU” I finished madmen about a half year ago, and i still think about it. Best ending in the tvshow history for sure!! I learned so much from it!! So glad they didn’t fked it up!!
One thing I will never forgive about the show is advertising itself. I absolutely hate advertisements, they can be clever but who in the end really likes advertisements everywhere? No one!
Literally watched the entire first season just because I liked this intro so much.
That's probably what I'm going to do
I’ll do that just like watching twd nowadays
Was it good
Once I saw the carousel scene in the final episode I HAD to watch the rest of the series.

I feel like the Bojack Horseman intro was inspired by Mad Men. It's similar in its own ways.
