  • GTA V has one big problem with its storytelling, strangely enough though this problem is solved in previous Rockstar titles. So why did GTA V suffer from this issue, today we will find out and further discuss why this issue is so prevalent in GTA V, and why it will likely not be a problem with future Rockstar titles.

Not only have they not finished it, but Rockstar haven’t considered updating the skyline and the buildings in Los Santos. I would love to have seen them add more towers and skyscrapers in Downton to align the game’s skyline with Los Angeles’s skyline. It would have been refreshing to have seen a new skyscraper in every update they have done. Otherwise, Downton will continue to feel bare and unexciting

For me i didn't had enough space to play gta 5 on 360. I had to buy a usb stick and download some of the contents into it and if i want to play it i have to use the stick.
Luckily not the same solution for xbox one it has enough space for rdr2 but still it just rockstar had to work with the limits with the consoles at the time. Which is understandable they were near end of life cycle.

People at the time did not receive this as well as they were hoping. At this point (2008/9) gta v is already under development and at this point they have a lot of work to undo a bunch of things from iv in order to make it the more arcadey, light realism that we have now.

The reason GTA SA rendition of LS is better than GTA 5 is because it's much better zoned. The whole east part of the city is "the hood" based off towns such as Compton, Inglewood etc, it feels big and sprawling and each area has a distinct image. While in GTA5 the whole "hood" is 4-5 blocks at best while the empty airport and seaport take half of the city, making residential areas disproptionately small and underrepresented.

I think it's down to a few major decisions in map design
    Density and spacing.
Los Santos compared to Liberty City,
obviously Los Angeles does not have the population density to that of NYC.
But that still doesn't mean population dense areas don't exist in LA
We just don't see them well represented in GTA V
Most likely due to rushed development and the fact that Rockstar wanted to put more care into the heart of the city, downtown and the financial districts respectively.
    Along with that
GTA V has a much greater emphasis on traveling via car, and Rockstar made the physics and map more forgiving in this regard.
Cars are snappier, quicker, and respond instantly. Roads became wider, with more sporadic traffic density that don't bunch up at intersections. This also leads to poor map pacing, as you can make it from one side of Los Santos to the other in just a few minutes, along with there only being few major roads to take. Buildings are very spaced out, along with huge lanes and sidewalks for the player to drive on and tons of alleyways.
Compared to Liberty City, the roads are very tight and narrow, with lots of one way streets. Your car is also more realistic and grounded, you have weight shifting, your car rolls a lot if you're turning too sharp, and your old tires skid everywhere. On top of that, car damage is amplified compared to V, any wrecks you could survive in V do major damage to your car in IV. And there are a lot more immovable objects that populate the streets of Liberty City compared to Los Santos. Planters with trees, wooden poles, and the supports that hold up the overhead subway lines, streetlights also don't break away as easily in IV like they do in V. This forces the player to slow down and take a more cautious approach to the driving in IV, as the map also has quite a lot of elevation changes and dips in the road.
Just like NYC, Liberty City is a literal maze of one way and two way streets often limited to only 1 or 2 lanes per direction. Filled with slow moving traffic often accompanied by parked cars on either side of the road, sometimes there are literal barriers that prevent the player from changing lanes or driving on the sidewalk, things that just aren't as plentiful in Los Santos. There's tons of active road work in Liberty City which restricts usable driving space if the slow moving dominant yellow taxis didn't contribute enough already.
All of this leads to much slower map pacing using sheer brute force of objects to slow the player down (along with the physics).
Due to all the space needed to let the player navigate the map in V, I think this is a major contributor as to why there's not many buildings, there just wasn't much space left, and ironically in downtown and the financial districts what you'll notice is that there's a lot of weird cut open spaces of the map that look completely out of place, because they're made to be driven through/on, with no guardrails or barriers to separate them from traffic. Huge plazas outside of buildings, weird not tended to grass plots that conveniently exist so you can drive your car across them to cut through traffic when they could've easily used said space to extend already existing buildings or have some clutter in its space to make the map more lively.
It's most likely that these areas in the deep urban jungle were meant to have dense vegetation such as bushes and trees. As we know a lot of vegetation that Rockstar wanted in V didn't make it into release due to the struggling hardware of the 7th generation unable to handle all of it. And Rockstar just decided to not do anything with the leftovers.

If they postponed it till the PS4 and XB1 then I feel like they would've been more than able to simulate the urban sprawl of Los Santos a lot better, because it's so incredibly limited in the actual game and that limiting has a lot to do with the older consoles' capabilities.

Actually performance was holding Rockstar back a little bit, the beta had more vegetation, but most of it was removed so the game would run faster on the 360 and PS3. Performance is why there is a lack of explorable interiors in GTA V, because even on PC, having a mod that enables all mission interiors causes crashes. Also Grand Theft Auto V’s map is based on real life Los Angeles and parts of California, there can’t just be homes in random areas of the map if they aren’t there in real life. This includes business related buildings too. You act like it is problem but no it really isn’t. I thought you were going to look into the issues with the story missions, maybe look at what rockstar cut from the game, etc…
Although I can see truth in why you think Grand Theft Auto V was rushed, there is various cut content from the game (horses, multiple missions, various weapons, various vehicles, etc…) and then there’s the things that were dumbed down for better performance on the 360 and PS3, more euphoria reactions were replaced with animations than live Ragdoll (the downgraded physics.) and cars received Arcady handling to run better, there is also the map, less vegetation like I said earlier and a lack of interiors. You might be right in GTA V being rushed here because Rockstar wanted it as soon as they could on a last generation console, instead of waiting for PS4 and Xbox One where they could have had so much more.

    What are you talking about?
GTA V was literally released on Xbox 360. It's a game with much better graphics and bigger map than RDR1 while still having to run on the same hardware. If you look up Beta version of GTA V there was definitely a lot of stuff that was removed because the game would literally be unplayable on the old consoles and Rockstar just didn't bother adding cut out stuff back to the game when GTA launched on PS4 and PC.
Edit: I agree with most of your other points though. GTA Vs map is kind of boring and empty compared to other GTA games. It was definitely limited by the hardware, possibly poor map design decisions and maybe it was kind of rushed like you said. We know Rockstar is extremely greedy. They probably rushed the game so they can release them on PS3 and Xbox 360. Almost doubling their profit since most people probably bought it again on new gen consoles.

4:30 regarding skyscrapers, populations don't live in skyscrapers, they live in apartment buildings. generally speaking, and assuming R* understood this as well, skyscrapers are indicative of commerce and businesses/offices. that said, even without people living in skyscrapers, there are plenty of apartment buildings and housing projects represented in liberty city to accommodate and insinuate a thriving population.
This is a great video and i really appreciate the points made in it. I agree totally, GTA5 never had the same "alive" feeling that GTA 4 did. 4 felt like it came with history, like there was a deeper story in each neighborhood and bridge and apartment block. I think 5's biggest fault was focusing such an incredible amount of time and resources on the surrounding natural areas. GTA is about crime in the city, and R* tried to expand the scope of the game beyond that. They decorated the city with comedy clubs venues and dance clubs and stores and interesting places, but made none of it enterable or interactive, and instead focused their attention on making animal AI and beautiful waterfalls and farmland that served little-to-no purpose.

What are you actually talking about? I'm a big fan of GTA IV but seriously, GTA V has plenty of space for its "residents", and it's not like the story doesn't expand on those parts of the map, there's even an attempted undercover drug bust on trevor at one of the deadest parts of the map where there's literally just one house overseeing the ocean.
There is many skyscrapers, apartment blocks within Los Santos and housing in the less developed parts of the map (Sandy Shores, Paleto bay, Eastern Los Santos, etc). There may be many businesses too in Vinewood, Downtown LS, and the central parts of the map but there also is in GTA IV in many parts of the map, if you look closer many skyscrapers belong to offices and there is still plenty of auto, cab, internet cafes, industrial warehouses and more types of businesses spreaded equally across the map in Liberty City but even in the industrial areas of Liberty City there is still way too many people walking around for that type of area of the map. In GTA V they actually fixed these issues, there is less population in the less dense parts of the map, way less to be clear, so this whole video just kind of comes off as another small CZcamsr saying "GTA IV good, GTA V bad" or just an excuse to not make the content that apparently your viewers want.
If you think GTA IV has a lot more history and lore across the whole map, just make videos on GTA IV until you inevitably hit the same roadblock on parts of the map with 0 lore and nobody gives fucks about, just like how there is also certain areas like that in GTA 3, GTA San Andreas, GTA Vice City (to a lot less of an extent, lets be honest its tinyyy), and there most likely also will be within GTA VI, same with even other games that exist like in the Forza series, Mafia series, Driver games, Sleeping Dogs, and many other open-world games. There is inevitably going to be parts of the map that are too small, too big and empty, and other parts of the map where all of the main activities within the world occur and are packed with lore. Heck, this even happens in real life. Some areas of the world IRL and in games just sometimes don't make sense, don't have lore or are just vast empty places. At least the developers in GTA V spent a hell of a lot time populating those areas with props, textures, the correct amount of people, vehicles, and at least trying to give the lesser-used parts of the map lore.
Even online and Trevor's storyline expand the story in the less developed and populated parts of Los Santos, so this whole video really doesn't make much sense if you just look closer into GTA V and actually drive around and spend a lot of time in those less developed areas of Los Santos' map. You literally cannot say that "uhm ackshually technical limitations were not an issue" when you consider the graphical fidelity and the size of the map along with that in 2013, GTA IV is literally a much smaller map that had insane optimisation issues on PC back when it was released and even on some systems still to this day and had insanely bad framerate on its orginial hardware, oh yeah what was that again? Oh, the XBOX 360 and PS3!!! The exact same consoles that a map that was much bigger and the graphics looked way better on with the same performance aims, which it got much better in V, as GTA IV on those consoles. As your top comment says itself, it's almost like people look at a game that was made in 2013 that still gets sold to this day as if it's a 2024 game and seem to forget it literally came out 4 years after GTA IV.
If anything the game doesn't really seem rushed at all, it just seems like R* realised that GTA IV had a lot of bloat in a lot of aspects of the game that people think makes GTA V a worse game when in reality it makes GTA V a game that performs insanely well even on PS3 to this day, I'm sick of CZcamsrs either talking smack about GTA V being worse than GTA IV or showing comparision videos when in reality a lot of features was not included or expanded on within GTA V for a very simple reason, performance and easier optimisation across consoles and PCs.

Everyone complains about GTA V being 11 years old etc etc but look how a 2004 game (GTA SA) still goes strong as always and it never lost it's touch. Literally a game from 20 years ago... Really, Rockstar was already a very big and rich company back in 10's, they could've polished GTA V's San Andreas better if they really wanted to. They're a multi-billion dollar company nowadays, why don't they put LSIA to good use, finish North Yankton and let us visit it during free roam? They already got the snow weather ingame, which they coded entirely just for some christmas event bs, and the prologue. Also the Cayo Perico land, so much detail yet we can't explore it - we go there to that stupid beach party and we get blocked in there with invisible walls. Why not let the player explore the damn map? It's already there, ingame.

I don't understand what you were trying to say about that "whole entire river" "outside of the map" in paleto bay, I was very close to clicking off the video after listening to that part twice and still not being able to figure out what you were getting at

I think its that he says that the game forgets to tell you what paleto bay really is. It dosent tell us what exactly is it a bay of ?

As an aside, I feel like "not enough housing" is a real problem and bugs me a lot when playing genshin impact. Didn't have a term for it until this video though. There are like 6 residential houses per area and there are like 60 people mentioned in lore or in gameplay. Like literally from pigeonhole principle a bunch of characters we meet ought to be roommates. At least the major characters we meet in GTA V all have their distinct place of residence or business.

Actually there are more houses and places.
San Andreas is not an island, and LS is not the only city.
It's just what we see in the game.
It would be to difficult to make land that's cut off by an invisible wall, extra textures, stuff that makes it look like houses and other cities in a distance.
It would probably make the game lag more.

Cleverly compacted map design is not a "problem".
We got things we had not have had in GTA IV at all as they scrapped the country side. Same with GTA SA. Countryside towns it had rarely had anuthing interesting about them either save for a few.
Also comparing GTA 5 to RDR2 is borderline dishonest and silly. During its development RDR1 and Max Payne 3 were made aswell, focus or GTA 5 was to restore some of SA's feel and content that 4 has lacked. Not to maje RDR1/2 like hyper immersion fest and still on PS3/X360 hardware.
They both wanted to push visuals and scale as much as possible while being restricted by the technology being the same one they done GTA IV and RDR1 with.

I've played almost all GTA games. Even though I loved GTA V, SA is still the best for me.
I've replayed V just once , but SA multiple times , even after replaying V and even now if I had time I'd still replay it.
That game was special. The story , the customization, the character arc, the map. It's crazy that no modern game can beat a game of 2004

I got a lot of problems with GTA, but the amount of buildings is not one of them. GTA 5 has more than enough buildings and set pieces that come together to show the player what kind of neighborhood or town they're in. Planning, Designing, and Modeling more buildings for an already packed map would be pointless and more strain to the devs.

There is no way of earning money in GTA V.
    This is just crazy

GTA has always had an implied residency problem.
