  • Money has been one of the main hud elements since the very first entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise. But in most games, it seems to just be an arbitrary number you can increase, and not very relevant after playing for a short while. Not every GTA is in the same situation, so today we're gonna talk about all the ways money is used in various games, and try to figure out what the next GTA game should rethink in this area.

    0:00 Intro
    1:30 How each game handles money

    GTA never really left its arcade roots from the top down games, hence money didn't transition fully from being a 'high score' to essential currency and resource in the game (as the in-game economy is not fully designed for this - there would need to be higher, more varied & realistic expenses).

    It's because chasing after money makes sense as motivation for the characters story-wise, but having to work a 9 to 5 for several months of in-game time to buy a single rocket for the rocket launcher wouldn't make for a very fun gaming experience. It's like that time when some guy started arguing with me in the comments when I said that Interstellar was a movie about advanced astrophysics. Yes, he was right that it wasn't accurate physics-wise, but on the other hand, all the main characters getting shredded in act 1 wouldn't make for an enjoyable movie...

  • @1977TA
    @1977TA Před měsícem +52

    Money isn't the problem in GTA 5 specifically the online game. You have plenty of things to spend it on. The problem is the economy is hyper inflated. Everything cost so damn much you need millions in your bank account just to purchase cars, guns, properties, and clothing items. This is the reason getting money is not difficult. Rockstar had to make it easy to earn money so that players didn't have to wait several months before they have enough to buy stuff. I think the economy in GTA 6 will be less inflated and money will be more difficult (slower) to earn. That way items can be priced reasonably. There won't be daily sunken treasure chests and other easily obtained money caches. You'll have to rob convenience stores and banks or work a job. There will be less heists if any. Basically, it will be the way GTA Online was in 2013. The mistake Rockstar made was adding too many businesses/heists to the game.

      I agree with your point and I would like to add that most of the lucrative jobs in GTA ONLINE are no longer needed to be done ONLINE, causing for GTA V Online to become a Crime Boss Simulator instead of GTAV ONLINE. We should make money with friends or other players, not alone.

      @montanablackhardcorefan6974 Před měsícem +5

      well, correct words. But the approaches in GTA6 should offer more than just business and procurement missions.
      There also needs to be a lot more creative freedom, such as designing clothes and tuning as well as redecorating interior spaces and buildings.
      if it were up to me, new clothes in a variety of colors and colorways would have to come into a GTA6O at least every month, as well as what feels like 100 new tattoos that you can place freely on your body, change their size and paint over certain areas in order to realize your art for yourself .
      When tuning a vehicle, new colors or the same color palette are just as common as in Forza. Multiple layers of color, not just 2 areas of secondary and primary color. more like 30 variations. SR series has presented this well before.

      I doubt it. Considering the popularity of GTA Online, I don’t think GTA 6’s online is going to be that different. I know people always complain about online, but it’s Rockstar’s most successful thing they’ve ever made. They’re not going to make such big changes. And also, not having heists sounds kind of boring and I think Rockstar thinks the same way.

    Gta 3 handled it the worst because most missions pay alot of money with little to spend it on aside from pay n spray and buying guns,
    Vice city fixed it by adding properties for sale but still didn't do enough to put stuff like buying clothes or putting upgrades to certain businesses,
    San andreas improved on it by letting us buy clothes and even more properties but it kinda broke the way money is handled, you can simply make billions by going to any betting shops and get filthy rich,
    Gta lcs went down the same gta 3 route i wish we had business properties that way we can see how the leones handle businesses but because it was rockstar's first take on the psp it's kinda forgivable,
    Gta vcs fixed the issue that lcs had and combined both vc and san andreas elements like the business empires,
    Gta chinatown wars made a perfect balance of handling money i hope gta 6 gets the same treatment,
    I love gta 4 as much as the next guy but money just didn't matter in it since in one of the endings the game spoon feeds you that you messed up letting roman die and got rich with nothing to spend it on apart from clothes and guns,
    Gta 5 kinda fixed gta 4's money issue but didn't improve on it, sure you can buy properties, clothes, cars/customization but after completing the story there's no incentive to grind since you're already rich,
    For gta 6 i hope it improves on handling money and maybe add safe house customization like saints row

    I personally enjoy the empire building aspects of GTA online. I often spend a few hours a day just going around maintaining all of my businesses in private mode and watching my money grow and the dopamine hit I get from investing some of that hard wanted money into upgrades for the businesses and watching that money get returned back to me even faster is honestly great. The game has a million issues and the economy is broken and the amount of time it takes me to even grind that money together to make those investments is pretty abused but I can't lie I do enjoy it alot. A few months ago I started a whole new online career and started with just the acid business, I grinded and upgraded it to full warning potential and used the profits to open an auto shop , then a MC garage , than a scrapyard, after a while it started to feel like my character actually had a specific specialty in as a career criminal. It basically felt like my guy was a mechanic who had various illegal income streams flowing through those businesses and the fact that I started out as an acid dealer just makes it that much better lol. I didn't buy any shark cards either. I just took my time, didn't buy anything that wasn't a business investment and within 2 months or so of gameplay I now have over 30 million and like 6 different businesses that make me constant passive income.
    The reason it took me years to even get nearly this far in my original character is because I never read any sense of direction I just purchased all the new properties when they came out without knowing if i actually liked them. New content is new content after all and who doesn't wanna rush to the next batch of content ? But now with complete hind sight and knowledge of what each business consists of, I am totally glad I restarted my online even if I did leave 10 years of progress and a level 490 character behind....

    I was thinking about this a few days ago and I really do like GTA games, at least the main ones which almost everybody played. I liked every single one because I played it to the fullest - everything the game has to offer. That's why I have 100% completion in all of them, except GTA 4 which I'm currently playing. But for others I have completed, I did every story mission, side missions/jobs, activities and even miscellaneous stuff like collectibles. And after you do all of that unlike doing only story like most people, you truly feel like a great driver, gunman and hacker.
    Vice city is a great example of why you need money, you complete some missions and with that earned money you can buy things like movie set, ice cream factory, club, apartments,... and they all have their uses, you get more side missions by buying them and apartments are used to save your game, the more you have means it'll be easier and faster to drive to it and save your progress or you can lose a few minutes and drive to your first ever apartment (unlocked after the first mission) every single time.
    Money is the reason why I still play GTA V Online, it's updated every 6 months and we get new garages, new cars, clothing items or new business with new missions. Sure, the game is old and tryhards are everywhere but you can still have fun with your friends or people you meet in game.
    I'm sorry if I made any grammar mistakes or misspelled any word.

    In GTA III, GTA Vice City and GTA SA (without gambling), money is used to sustain the game loop of arming up, dying, and arming up again. This is especially true in the 3D universe, where even dying in a mission forces you to lose all your weapons.
    The only elements that really ruin this balance is gambling, and the abuse of the vigilante missions where the payout increases exponentially.

And there are so many ways to get rich right in the second chapter. You can visit like 3 different locations and get 1500 dollars by finding gold bars. its because money translates directly to the states of the charecter in the game. for example in mafia 2, money comes and goes so frequantly that the players dosen't pay attention to it sometimes. and because of the way the game is designed, there isn't much to do with the money at all. but you can compare the difference between when you are rich with tons of money, and when you lose all that you have. in gta, freemode has tons of activites. the problem is the charecter wouldn't have any motive to spend on whatever the player wants it to. that's why by logic, freemode access is always limited. and earning money is expected in the story to make sense.

    There are ways to get virtually infinite money in most of those games. San Andreas has a save spot 20 meters away from a Blackjack table with a $1,000,000 limit. GTAV has several assassination missions that let you more than double your money by manipulating stocks, that you can leave for after the main story line, and if you use the money from the big heist as seed money, you can usually make around $1,000,000,000 from it. GTA Online actually did have an economy at some point, since it had multiple ways of making money, and they kept adding more stuff to buy that your average player could afford, but the last time I played, the Cayo Perico heist made pretty much all other forms or money making obsolete.

    About GTA Online. At first, money is gold. But after you play for a good chunk of time (especially if you're good at speed heisting and cathing all of 2-3x opportunities R* throws at you), it's again useless. Money is somewhat needed only if you're very, VERY big on car collections. Other than that, you just buy every property, a couple of OP vehicles, one or two super sport cars to feel the need for speed, and that's all.

  • @siyzerix
    @siyzerix Před 18 dny

    I think rockstar can take a page out of bethesda's book. Like having building your own house or town like in skyrim SE and FO4. Perhaps you can spend money on maintenance of your cars or weapons, etc. Like, the more stuff you have, the more you have to pay in maintenance. Cause, once you do reach the end game in any of the GTA games, you will be swimming in cash with nothing to spend it on. Only way to be ''broke'' is to go gambling/buying stocks. A middleground would be definitely nice too.
    Rockstar can also prolly make more advanced types of payments like pay and spray's don't just have a fixed price anymore to fix any damage amount. Its ridiculous that you can bring in a nearly destroyed car and get it fixed for a few hundred dollars. Should be easily 10's of thousands of dollars to potentially even hundreds of thousands.
    GTAO has a pretty good economy. The problem is you are being forced to grind and some of the things just cost WAY too much.
    Because an economy the player engages in, will definitely improve immersion and also better mix gameplay with story. I modded my skyrim SE to have kind of a real economy where you REALLY gotta pay high prices for getting gear. Improves the immersion.

    The fix would be to give the player substantially less for completing missions or space out the larger paying jobs between more missions, to have players lose all the money they are currently holding with a bank system, have the player pay fines or lawyer fees and bail on top based on crimes they committed when they are caught, bring in a buy and sell system like drug dealing or chop shopping so there’s always something to spend large amounts on, and with the money loss system in place when you die, money will come and go frequently. Also make cars realistically expensive and make them perma dead if they’re destroyed with persistent damage, forcing the player to either take more care of their personal car they just spent half a mil on, or pay the money to have it repaired a lot. Make weapons perma lost if you drop it, die with it or get arrested forcing the player to purchase more guns. They could also give the player more options in running the businesses they own, like upgrades and keeping businesses stocked and staffed. Make gambling a thing again but with more variation like betting on fights and such as well as casinos and even random dice games like how red dead has random card games, make bribes a thing, make disposable gear and items, make the player pay rent and utilities early on until they buy their own properties, make furnishing player homes a thing so you have to buy furniture and other things for your houses, make eating food a necessity like red dead so you have to keep your fridge stocked.
    There are so many thing they could implement, they just don’t 💁🏻 I haven’t watched the video yet btw, I’m about to now lol
    Edit:
    San Andreas definitely did it best imo, the horse races and casino games were perfect for spending money, but the health and armour cheat also came with $250,000 every time so I always had waaaaay too much lol

    • @fica1137
      @fica1137 Před 21 dnem

      GTA 5 made cars you buy in story mode perma destroyed, making the entire point of buying cars pointless because why bother buying a car and customizing it if you will destroy it in few minutes. I bought a Zentorno only to realize it's not worth and I just continued stealing random cards on the street.
      Same thing with guns, in GTA 4 it was easy to get arrested but money was limited so you would run out of money if you got arrested a bunch of times or fired the RPG too many times (5000$ per rocket but after finishing the story you will have only million or two). That's why savescumming was preferable in every situation

    Also, I hope they do a better job with the property assets. Make them like the ones from Vice City where you have to complete actual missions to expand them, grow them and maintain them. But don’t make them like the ones in GTA V. Their properties assets were terrible.

    😕It feels like you can't do much with money in all GTA games except SA and 5 + 5o.
    😪The problem is also more of the senseless self-created inflation of money in GTAo, where you have to invest thousands, hundreds of thousands of dollars for everything for nothing.
    😵The idea behind taking money from people with shark cards is almost understandable. but it still takes away the incentive to play.
    👍At least in GTA6 (I really hope so) you can completely customize your own buildings, not just selected interiors created by Rockstar, but really 1000 small details for your own apartments and properties. That would be progress.
    😪The vehicle tuning in GTA 5 isn't entirely wrong, the prices are just ridiculously overpriced.
    🤷🏻‍♂These games simply lack your own goals so that you can actually achieve something, not just buy 10 shops and 20 bases, hangars, bunkers that, at the end of the day, no one will use anymore.
    😵But well, the standard gta5 + gtao is so outdated, it's incomprehensible that so many people still play it.
    😉Some SOME gta RP servers with money and possible purchasable objects and things are much better than gtao.
