"What Use Is the Bible?" - Prof Joel Baden

- There are two contradictory facts about how Americans read the Bible. According to a 2011 Gallup poll, nearly 80% of all Americans believe the Bible is either literally true or is the inspired word of god. The other fact, most Americans have no idea what's in the Bible. In his presentation at TNP 2013, Yale University Professor Joel Baden, takes a look at an utterly familiar text and has us think about what the Bible says and just as importantly, how it says it.
Prof Baden, there is a flaw in your argument. At (9:05) you reference the Bible text in Genesis 2:4 as "..., on the day that the God made the earth and heavens." The rest of your argument hinges on Genesis 2 pointing to a specific day.
The King James Bible (which you indicate you are using) is not translated as "..., on the day" it is translated "..., in the day". "In the day" can point to a time period instead of a specific day. If I were to say "in my day, I was a good basketball player", "in" along with "day" would indicate a time period instead of a specific day.
To improve your argument, explain why you chose to misquote the KJV using the preposition "on" instead of "in". Or, if you are using another translation, indicate which translation you are using.

Other Bible translations (NIV, CSB), translate the Hebrew to clearly indicate a time period instead of a specific day. To improve your argument, reference the original Hebrew and explain why you believe the text points to a specific day instead of a period of time.

You realize Dr. Baden is one of the top scholars of Biblical Hebrew in the world, right? He knows very well what it says in the original and doesn't have to rely on unreliable translations like the KJV.

In this video Dr. Baden's argument hinges on the Hebrew word "Yowm". "Yowm" can be a day or a period of time. "Yowm" is used throughout the bible as a day or as a period of time. I think for Dr. Baden to make a solid argument for his position he should clarify why he believes "Yowm" in Genesis 2:4 refers to a day instead of a period of time. "Yowm" as a period time in Genesis 2:4 is consistent with the context.
Hopefully Dr. Baden will chime in and clarify.
Even top scholars can be wrong, right?

@@andrewonyoutube756 Yes, the word is יום which in the Septuagient gets rendered as ἡμέρα. The problem is the fact that different languages have different idioms when it comes to everything, especially time words and phrases. Even in German, which is a West Germanic language like English, 'in diesen Tagen' (literally: in these days) actually means 'in the coming days' despite appearances that it would just mean 'in these days'. So when it comes to trusting who knows Ancient Hebrew idioms best, I'm gonna place my bets on Professor Baden.

I'll articulate your position in a simplified manner for clarity, please correct me if I am wrong as I have made some assumptions to articulate your position.
Your position:
You agree "Yowm" can be translated to be a specific day or period of time and throughout the Bible "Yowm" is translated as a specific day or period of time based on context and surrounding words.
You trust Professor Baden is properly translating "Yowm" to be a specific day in Genesis 2:4.
If that is your position, I would refer you to Bible verses that tell us we should not put our trust in man (Psalm 118:8-9, Jeremiah 17:5-8). I would also refer you to Bible verses that mention being wary of false teachings (2 Timothy 4:1-4).
I would then refer you back to Genesis 2. Read the chapter and translate "Yowm" in 2:4 as a period of time then read the chapter and translate "Yowm" as a specific day and ask yourself, based on the context, which translation makes more sense.
I was raised with this, maybe that is why I'm such a happy Hindu. I kept Jesus and the love of Christ, but chucked the dogma.

Genesis one and two is complimentary..they talk about different events..one is creation..and one is about what happened at the garden....how did he miss that? misleading his audience and viewers..
