BNC#6: RW Johnson - SA voters maturing; jobs, electricity, water now matter most

  • At last week’s BizNews Conference, political scientist RW Johnson explained why, for South African voters, facts are finally trumping feelings. Drawing on developments post-1994, especially within the African National Congress, the long-time Oxford Don argued the country has now reached a point where its politics has become ‘secular’ - the old religious-type loyalty for the liberation party being replaced by a focus on realities affecting our daily lives. The consequences are likely to be reflected when votes are tallied after May 29 - with potentially dramatic results awaiting the nation.

What an excellent, excellent analysis by RWJ, one of the best I have heard from him. In a nutshell, this is the reason why the democratic experiment in SA MUST now be seen as having failed. The fact that the foundational Christian ideology (whether you subscribed to it or not) has been eroded completely, is the one factor that has caused our downfall. We wanted to have our rules, we made them, we now live by them and we will perish because of them.

What really amazes me regarding the business community of South Africa is there total blindness to the greatest problem facing this country and that is 75% of the young people snd rising have no hope of ever finding a job. We have a business leadership that is so incompetent in the industrial world indicating that the PE tyre and car manufacturers developed to lift Shack Communities out! of poverty could not work When pointed out that all four US manufacturers and the proof factory demonstrated it would work they were forced to. with draw. the irresponsible letter to government. Engineers working in one of the car design offices develop the plan and from proof factory one and 2 confirm by the CSR we know how to lift everya major Shack community into 😊the formal economy. Both Busa and Blsa have subsequently stated in writing that's the plan works but I not prepared to support it in other words they are sabotaging the future of South Africa.

As an Afrikaans teenager of the 80's we only listened to popular music which was British/Euro (New Wave & Punk), American (Mowtown, Funk & Disco) & Caribbean (Reggae) and locally to Afrobeat (Jonny Clegg/Juluka, éVoid, Hotstix Mabuza etc.), we were só ready for change and we bought into the Mandela Dream, today much disillusioned... currently Afrikaner youth are free & proudly make traditional & contemporary music & wear khaki shorts again, ironically...❤🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

We really need to look at political system change. OHM is the only party talking about abolishing political parties and their funders and shifting to a direct democracy system where citizens vote from the bottom up. Where community leaders are elected directly and held accountable by the voters directly. Politicians divide us and political parties favour their donors first and then maybe the people. Democracy should be putting the power in the hands of the people and not the wealthy elite or politicians with agendas.

OHM gives great philosophical speeches but never any practical solutions to basic problems facing south africans. That's why I like Gayten Mckenzi, no bs empty words, just logic and reason.

Mr JOHNSON in the beginning of the 60' more than 35%of English speaking voters voted for the NP.Dr VERWOERD had as a major principle to bring AFRIKANERS and ENGLISH people together..You as as a liberal voter now see what happened with the "rainbow" nation.More than one culture cannot be one nation.Artificial unity as you now refer to the ANC.What you should confess is that separate development ,like in the rest of the world,is the only feasible option.

@@onlypremiumlife Nah homie I have lived in different spaces of the economic bracket since I was young like most success stories of Black Middle Class. This is a story that most White People can't tell because we are the only ones that have lived and still have a connection in rural areas, townships, towns and suburbs. This makes us have a good feel of all brackets at the same time. Imagine an old man who thinks the ordinary South African is the middle class that lives in town when in fact the ordinary South African is the guy who lives in a township where our population is densely found and surrounded by lower middle class to poor class. The only reason people have decided to vote out Ramaphosa is because he is out of touch with the ordinary ANC voter. It has nothing to do with matured voting for electricity, water and services but mainly because they see Ramaphosa no different as they see John and hence an emotional change. They choose to vote for alternatives now because alternatives are now receiving the best timing to capitalise on a failed ANC leader whom was worse than Zuma by their internal party standards. The big rise of MK party in Limpopo, MP, KZN and GP is testament to that. This will be the most highly contested election and I wish all the parties luck to pave a better way forward for South Africa any way they can

The Afrikaners did’nt became English. We learned to adapt in order to survive in SA, Africa, the world. We are proud of fellow Afrikaners exceeding on a world stage speaking a high level of English but keep their identity. As for music it is a pity for some to argue that their was ‘’boere musiek’’ and then nothing. All the culture events like Aardklop, KKNK, In Die Bos is another reality that was ignored. But the trend argument makes sense.
