Brothers Osborne on their long journey, of music and identity

  • The country music duo Brothers Osborne began their musical education early, but their success in Nashville wasn't assured until they joined together, with the hit single "Rum" in 2014, followed by their album, "Pawn Shop." "CBS This Morning" co-host Anthony Mason talked with John Osborne about how he overcame a crippling anxiety that caused the brothers to cancel shows; and TJ Osborne, who recently came out as gay, about that news' effects on their fan base.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

Thank you for "spilling the secret" lol - gosh - I keep thinking since the mighty Rob Halford "came out" Judas Priest remained the "metal gods" for the fans. Your voice was made for singing and your talent for creating music and performing. The only thing I don´t like is the term "gay". I am not gay 24/7 lol, sometimes I ´m just miserable ..... I prefer the term samesexorientated if one really needs to categorize and put us in little boxes or drawers. So, take care, don´t do stupid things, be blessed and keep making that great country music. One day you will be upt here with the unforgettable Glen Campell, Jonny Cash and others .....

We have had Gay people in music for many, many years. They just didn't air their sexuality to the general public. Why do some feel the need to share their intimate lives in a public forum? If their music is good enough, the public will except and buy it. If not, they need to look elsewhere for their living. These Brothers are talented, and will do well regardless of their sexual orientation.

You don’t know what it’s like inside someone who is different. And you don’t seem to want to know. And I’m pretty sure I can’t communicate to you to your satisfaction why it’s important. But it is.
Society automatically announces everyone’s sexual orientation to everyone. Everyone assumes everyone’s sexual orientation. You do know your your parents sexual orientation, your friends, your coworkers. You do know. All the time. You don’t have a problem with it. The only time you have a problem with it is when someone sets the record straight and says society is telling you the wrong thing about me. No big deal but it is important to set the record straight. And not setting the record straight often means one is embarrassed to say that society is wrong about me. Being embarrassed about who you are is deadly. Literally.
Should a friend of yours not invite you to their wedding (gay or straight) because it would let you know their sexual orientation? Should your friend not share with you the fact that they are in love (gay or straight) because that would be announcing their sexual orientation? What should your kid do who is gay? Never date because you don’t want to know his sexual orientation?
      It’s important.

When a straight person thanks their boyfriend/girlfriend at an Awards show, or even at the end of a football game, do you say, "Who do they have to let everyone know they're straight?" most importantly, people are always ASSUMED to be straight, people have to come out of the closet to say they're gay. You're probably just thinking of only yourself, but announcing that you're gay inspires other people to accept themselves, coming out as gay also provides visibility to an underrepresented group....
