This pilot couldn't be done more perfectly. As a person who played the original game when it came out in 2013, I always wanted this story to be available to more people, I wanted my parents to experience it for years but they're not gamers. 10 years later I came to their house to have dinner and we watched the first episode together, it was surreal.
If they pull this it will open a door for so many opportunities like a live action red dead, or live action gta v or gta4
We can re experience the excitement these games brought us and expand it outside the gaming community
Yeah man, exactly! Not everyone is gonna play the game, or plays games at all. It's nice for people to experience the world building, story, and character development in another way!
Have you ever played the game... she was never black
@@pizzapizza1460 First of all it's a fictional character and second of all the actress is biracial.
@@pizzapizza1460 Literally who cares?
Both the kid actors played by Sarah and Ellie nailing it with the American accent
why is she black for no reason whatsoever, its not even close to the original game , while he looks the part
They’re both over 18
eh ellie is meh
@@ncard00 they weren't at the time of filming though
@@ikninja1hd Let me guess, its because of the way she looks?
I loved this episode. I loved how they gave us more time with Sarah. Like, honestly, it made when Sarah dies a bigger kick to the bag. This adaptation started off to a perfect start. And when Joel attacked the guy, I saw it as a form of PTSD almost, and like they basically said, instinct kicked in basically and he tried to protect Ellie.
@루나 the Pug 🌸 idk but race swaps don't really bother me. she played sarah perfectly and thats all that matters to me.
@루나 the Pug 🌸 because her race did not define her character
The odd thing is, I felt like they made Sarah more personanble and clsoer to Joel in 5 minutes, than in a long drawn out segement here
@루나 the Pug 🌸 if does not matter then why ask why? Becuase if it did not matter you would not be asking why. 😮💨
@루나 the Pug 🌸 Right wing propaganda meme ideology has ruined your brain. You're more like an infected drone from the show than anyone else in this world. Literally just repeating the most trivial nonsense propaganda talking points imaginable, it's so embarrassing for you.
What Craig Mazin said at the end of the video about Ellie enjoying the violence literally made me consider Ellie's entire character arc in part 2 so insanely deeper than I already did. Absolutely immaculate storytelling
I could see this show redeeming the last of us games of all their flaws. The story in the show so far is much better.
@@youngnat No it's not, but it's pretty darn good.
I'd never thought of it like that before but it makes a lot of sense for Ellie's character
Oh yeah, she enjoys violence so much that even after killing 10000 men and women, she decides to let the person who was responsible for making Ellie kill those thousands of men and women to go on scot free into the sunset.
@@Gazsh1 Yeah yeah... Go cry over it
I am glad people who don't play video games finally get a chance to experience this story. I was skeptical when it was first announced, but episode 1 has well surpassed my expectations. I am now really looking forward to the rest of the series
I'm not. Coz: Well first MJ from Spider-Person, then Arielle and now they turned Sarah also into chocolate.
@@Puxi bro you keep commenting abt Sarah who TF cares she was only gonna be in 1 ep. Big deal they're doing an amazing job with the show so far, 1st ep was amazing
@@balistahr.o.g1103 English please.
@@Puxi why does it matter? how does someone’s skin color affect the way a character is portrayed? it genuinely doesn’t matter grow up
@@ssgissellee2345 ?
i love the way that Sarah's death mimics the game, even down to how she's breathing after being shot.. so well done. also 4:28 - 5:06 is so well said
Only thing that wasn't mimic was her skin color
@@tacticalmanagerbabymommaak5825 and her hairstyle & color. in the game she's blonde , in the tv show she's a curly brunette.
@@tacticalmanagerbabymommaak5825 and it was amazing how that didn't matter at all? Almost like you can absolutely change those characteristics when they don't weigh on the character at all. Nothing about Sarah being white was a part of her character.
@@tacticalmanagerbabymommaak5825 yes, because her race didn't define her character. Come on now man, mixed relationships exist lol
@@IcarusNadir ok and? The daughter was white. Not mixed. That simple. I wouldnt have liked it if they changed Marlene to a white blonde woman. Dumbass.
Haven't been this happy with a first episode of a show in an extremely long time. Everything about it was simply perfect, from Mazin's directing to the performances it was phenomenal. This is a show done with care and love.
Agreed. Not since Westworlds pilot was I immediately looking forward to next Sunday.
100%
So happy with how it turned out, just a great pilot with really damn good world building.
They knew they couldn’t risk the backlash of this beloved ip. It’s too much of a money maker. Seeing how it will most likely play out the whole first part as the preview showed Jackson, I am not ready for the tears 😭
I think the last time I was this excited waiting for a show to come on was when the first episode of the Mandalorian came on.
Not at all
Damn already fleshing out Ellie’s desire for violence and punishment in the first episode! This show is going to be amazing!!
yeah that's interesting because the games only really get to that point in part II.
I LOVED THE FIRST EPISODE. I cannot wait to see the rest of this show!
Questionable about Bella Ramsey but I’m not anymore she’s damn near perfect for the role
Well first MJ from Spider-Person, then Arielle and now they turned Sarah also into chocolate.
:(
@@Puxi WTF?
@@Puxi MJ in the new Spider-Man trilogy isn’t Mary Jane. It’s Michelle Jones. Completely different person
i wonder if season one will span the whole first game. I hope so, font want to wait 2 years for the rest
Craig Mazin as the director and showrunner for 'The Last of Us' TV series is absolute perfection. He is killing it, no doubt about it. From the very first scene, you can tell that he has a clear vision for how to bring this beloved game to life on screen, and he is executing it flawlessly. He understands the characters and the story so well, and he is able to bring out the best in the cast. The pacing and tension in the pilot episode is spot on, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The way he blends the game's iconic moments with his own creative touches is simply masterful. I had no doubt that he'd do a great job, but he is exceeding all my expectations. He's the best choice for this show and I can't wait to see more of his work in the upcoming episodes.
Do keep in mind that Neil is heavily involved as well. I don't think the perfectionist in him would allow for anything less then perfect. Although, some would argue that LOU2 isn't perfect but to some people it is.
I smell an emmy for this pilot episode
Co-director and co-producer. Same as Neil. By the way, the next episode was directed by him.
You do realize your words are “one-directional commercialism” right? The racial swap, Bill’s character sub-arc with Frank, and not to mention the downgrade of intense blood and gore. Open your mind and look at the ups and downs. Also, everything’s not perfect and this show ain’t perfect. It is “infectious and brain dead” perfect for Woke Bollywood.
av
Marlene was fantastic, so glad she got to play her again.
I was watching her every expression like a hawk in her first scene because admittedly I was skeptical of someone I knew only as a voice actor taking on a role like this on TV. Her line delivery and presence was great. Seems like they made a good call
@@daraotl5187bro she isnt even just a voice actor first of all, because its mocap for the last of us. Secondly, she did broadway.
@@jens2049 I personally only knew her as a voice actor was my point. But I didn't know that, that's cool
Hats off to the entire team. The transition from game to TV show was perfect.
what? it was average at best. not sure what's so special about it
@@giorgio5789: Tell me a pilot episode you think was special and/or excellent.
i wouldn't say it was perfect tbh but it good don't get me wrong
@@giorgio5789 hater always a hater
4:27 Love the way Craig explains Ellie's reaction to Joel beating that guy to death. She likes that for the first time someone defends her like that, someone cares about her enough to kill a man with their bare hands. Beautifully heartbreaking.
Man, Nico Parker absolutely killed it. And her American accent was so good that I wondered if her mother’s English accent was natural (I only knew her from Westworld). She was absolutely amazing and I don’t think I could’ve asked for a better Sarah. I wished I could’ve seen more of her, and for that I’m glad that they extended the Day 0 section further than what the game gave us, just so that we could get more Nico Parker Sarah.
She just made me sit on the edge of my chair. Amazing performance!
I teared up when Sarah died. Nico Parker did an amazing job my God she was perfect. My heart is cold so the fact I cried was crazy to me
It's breaking my brain to see such a great live action video game adaptation.
I got very emotional seeing such iconic scenes brought to life in this live action adaptation. Some scenes seem ripped straight from the game.
I can't be the only one who originally played the game and thought the show sucked.
@@wilkinscoffee8979: Tell me three pilot episodes that you think were excellent.
@@wilkinscoffee8979 you are
@@wilkinscoffee8979 with what ive seen so far, review wise you are in the minority, although opinions are definitely divided on episode 3 (which i absolutely LOVED)
Really love Craig's dissection of why Ellie and Joel's relationship is so beautiful yet dangerous, especially given what their love for each other drives them to do in the future.
Dude that sad scene in the first episode got me man 😢who else cried?
Trust me you better prepare it’s going to get even more sadder
Joel’s daughters death scene was a tear jerker. I think more emotional than the game and i didn’t think that was possible.
This premiere and the entire cast and crew deserve a hour long standing ovation.
Well lets not be too hyperbolic. Great first episode tho!
@@captain4318 Simple hyperbole or not, he has a point. The cast has done an exemplary job in their retrospective performances.
Probably the best video game adaptation yet, Seems they actually listened and understood the world
Well yeah you'd think, it has the backing, writing and even direction of Neil
Let's wait and see. Arcane to me is still holds a high bar of excellence
@@CzarsSalad I don't know if you can really call Arcane a 'game adaptation', a story set in the same world as the game maybe?
@@Jambobist I agree, Arcane is a new story set in LoL's universe. Not really an adaptation.
@@CzarsSalad who the fck watch arcane? it's fcking anime compare to this lol
as someone who has only played a little bit of the first game at a friends house this was probably the strongest pilot for a show i've seen in a while. hope the rest of the series stays this good
Pedro was a brilliant casting choice
i love how you averted expectation from the car crash where Sarah hurts her ankle to a plane .. it really got me
The pilot was a straight banger. Watched it with my parents so they can see the story that I fell in love with when I was younger. But the way they showed the infected was done magnificently. Especially with just that one infected chasing Joel and Sarah into the bar.
I loved the end credits too
When Ellie was locked in for a brief moment inside Joel and Tess's room, she was looking the things around like what you would normally do in the playstation games, I really liked that detail!
When we see Marlene for the first time, I thought..Wow, that's exactly Marlene ! Yeah, I didn't know that it was Merle Dandridge, the original Marlene 😅
My heart was pounding at the beginning of the episode and my god they really gave us the best live action adaption of a video game!
I loved every minute of the first episode. The moment the outbreak happened it had me at the edge of my seat that I shed a tear for Sarah. I can’t wait for the next episode!!
Sarah actor was on point currently best actor on the show to me wish she could of lived at least for 1st or half way through the season.
Oh my God, they even brought in some actors from the game to reprise their characters. That’s brilliant.
Neil and Craig 👏 you geniuses!
That little smirk Joel gives when Ellie figures out the radio code is just gold. The game didn't feature it, but nonetheless it's a nice touch to bond the characters.
And that's why you judge actors on performance and fidelity rather than appearance itself. Just spot on.
Great pilot gotta admit I didn’t think watching Sarah dying again would emit an emotional response from me but it absolutely did. I think it helps they drag it out a little bit so you really see her suffer from that gun shot and it’s gut wrenching.
just watched it. they did it. they finally did it.
they adapted a video game the way it's supposed to be adapted: faithful to the original, while expanding upon what is already there. Cannot wait for next week!
Casting the same actress from the game for marlene is perfect. by far the best thing about the episode i hope she will get more screen time in the series.
nico parker nailed the role fully. memorable and perfect
Very good first episode, made me so nostalgic, it's been 10 years already since I first experienced this masterpiece of a story, now I got to live it again. Thanks HBO.
And Sony pictures television studios
“Drugs. I sell hardcore drugs”
So happy they kept that line. It stucked to me even from my first playthrough.
My brother and I played both games together around two to three years ago. We just finished watching this first episode and we have never been more hype. Getting to bring back all of the inside jokes we had with this series was truly nostalgic and pretty emotional for me 😅
This adaptation is perfect, in every sense of the word. It follows the game to a tee, and the changes they made and extra stuff added just gives it more of a identity. It’s really a testament to how good the game is when an adaptation is willing to go up and behind for it.
Thandie newtons daughter did an amazing job !
So far so good! They have seemed to FINALLY crack the code and end this adaption curse! Damn, Sarah's end still hits hard, what a performance
Arcane, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Detective Pikachu, Sonic, Mortal Kombat (2021), Persona 3.
And, I'd also argue for Mortal Kombat (1995) and Silent Hill.
I'd say that the code has already been cracked. TLoU is just another gem on the crown.
@@KindlingEffect yeah, I was kind of implying live action, more than cartoons, but I get it... Argue just to argue
🤦
Loving the series so far! Looking forward to the rest of it.
Omg .. the last scene when Joel beats the cop to death.. and the way Craig mazin explains the scene with the diff between Sarah and ellie... Omg this is passion, this is love for the game that mazin has . This explanation has opened my eyes to look the series in a broader perspective from now on❤️❤️❤️😭
Don’t think they needed the flashback when he killed the guard, felt like they think we are stupid
Everything was amazing, the performances, the set pieces, the props, the music, the intro, the easter eggs. I could'n't have higher expectations going in, I've never been more invested in an adaptation before, and it surpassed everything. I absolutely loved every second of it.
Perfect first episode!! Love from Argentina ! I played the video game the first and second part so i am awere of what is going to happen. But this is really well done!
I think the ptsd sorta flashback part that Joel faced was such a good addition. It really showed that even though he pushes everything down he still can’t escape it and as someone with ptsd it really portrays how it feels perfectly, no thoughts, just actions and emotion
I like how they got Marlene's orignal actress to play her in live-action.
"When I first heard about it, I was like "Mommy want that!" AND MOTHER GOT IT AND WE LOVE HER
i am blown away by this first episode. I have been holding my breath ever since the HBO adaptation was announced and this episode was a breath of fresh air. I am relieved and eager to see how the rest of the season plays out. Well done HBO.
Nico Parker (Sarah) looks so much like her real life mom (Thandie Newton). What a fantastic first episode!
In the video game once you play 1 & 2 , after , you realize this is not Joel’s story , it’s Elli,s story , Joel & every other person , place & thing is all Elli,s . You have to remember that she was born into this epidemic & every other person lived through it , she wants to learn how to survive in this world for a reason & later you find out that reason was taken from her in game 2 & now she has to live with the consequences of someone taking that away from her . This is a story about survival , love , death , lgbqt, birth , loss , revenge , accomplishment , fear , decision making , consequences, sacrifice , .
It felt almost like playing the game intro. I had exact the same vibes. Amazing. I don’t care about whether the actors who look different - they’re all great.
is sarah mixed race in this? she looks it. gonna wait for a few episodes and then binge watch it!

The fact hbo is a smaller streaming service then its competitors even though they have been the only ones consistently dropping good content and own Productions is a crime
The first episode blew my mind, and I cannot wait to see more episodes!
Fantastic job done by the cast, director, and the writers, take a bow HBO, this is how an adaptation is done.
Tremendous stuff. That initial outbreak scene was super intense
Love that the episode gives us the same checkpoints from the game with dialogue that stays true to the iconic scenes, but provides extra detail in between getting to them.
I was never much of a gamer. But I did play this one, and it captivated me in ways that other games never did. Or could. I just felt exactly the same feelings watching this pilot. Hats off to all involved. I'm here for it.
The first 10 mins got me hooked even knowing his daughter is going to die it still hits u
Bc I was really hoping she was going to live knowing she dosent
Even better than I thought it would be! Phenomenal.
Nico looks and sounds exactly like her mother, that even makes me sad to know season five of Westworld is cancelled.
Nico played the role so well!!
Very good pilot episode. Already pumped for next sunday!
Just started this game for the very first time the other night. The show is great so far, I'm halfway through the first episode and it''s straight out of the game so far
This first episode is an absolute triumph! It REALLY does the game justice but stands on its own legs at the same time! Brillant!!
It was perfect! PERFECT! Down to the the last minute details!
I've got a good feeling about this, first episode was so awesome I already know they put a lot of work into this.
if you only knew! I was on set a few times and the entire team worked so hard on it. Its going to be epic!
I haven't seen anyone praise the opening scene, but man was it brilliant. It genuinely freaked me out and left me feeling super tense. Chernobyl is one of the only other things that has given me such a palpable sense of dread. They chose the perfect guy for this show.
I cannot believe how worked up this pilot got me. And I'm a big TLOU fan since the game launched. I was absolutely floored by this interpretation. Well done
God, this show is already good. I love how they added things you only heard about in the game !!! Now my mother and family that don't game get to experience this amazing story. I've literally played ps3 , ps4, and now ps5 version. Now, seeing it live action, I'm so happy !!!!
Wow... Just wow. I've never had a PlayStation to experience TLOU but know parts of the story and wow. I'm literally in shock, that was amazing. Props to everyone who worked on this series. But now we have to wait a week, which is upsetting slightly.
Epic execution!!!!
Great first episode. Definitely will be watching it again before episode 2.
Just because I feel like everything else is going to get more attention, I want to point out-
Gabriel Luna was absolutely 100% perfect as Tommy.
The first episode was great! A lot of it felt like it was ripped out of the game. Can’t wait to see more.

HBO, Craig, Neil... you legends. Crushed it. I mean as close to perfection as you could get.
Amazing first episode. Can’t wait for more
10/10 perfect adaption. Keep this going on and they might have created the best video game adaption in history
When you're on the internet trying to take in more and more of something you've just watched, there's not a single doubt that what you've just seen is a masterpiece. What an amazing thing I've just experienced. Best game adaptation. Hands. Down. Stoked for episode 2 already!
Shocking.. They took pride and showed respect.. What a strong start.. Can already tell this is going to be good
perfect first episode .. just perfect. thank you.
I just finished episode 1 and it's beautiful I loved it THANKS FOR DOING IT IN LIVE ACTION HAHAHAHA and I loved the performances too ❤❤❤❤❤
BTW: I did not think that I would cry a lot for the death of Sarah but I did cry, and I really liked how her actress acts, very good chapter 1 and with a freshness with the new scenes added in the first episode
Never played the game but was watching a video where an insect is taken over by a fungus, and someone mentions this game, and now the show is finally here. Loved the talk show intro where they actually explain how it happens or could happen, and then . . . it does. Reminded me of when the first Resident Evil came out, and that scene with the Doberman Dog zombies, never played that game either. Love Pedro Pascal from GoT, Narcos, and Mandolorian, and Bella from GoT, as well.
even almost 10 years, everyone still remember Sarah. her death touch our hearts
It has been hard to find a game I enjoyed playing and getting attached to after I played the Silent Hill saga, but Last Of Us was the one game i really loved. The characters are amazing and unique and the whole game is just so good. The series is on point with everything. Well done to anyone that worked on this!
Absolutely love the first ep it was everything
From a pov of someone who didn't play the game, I can say this is a very good pilot. It's a kinda nice experience watching a show without being spoiled with major plot points.
Nico's Parker performance was so real and outstanding. An incredible series opening!
Nico reminds me SO MUCH of her mother Thandiwe! She nailed the role, and I’m not surprised. Sad to see her go so soon, but can’t wait to see what she does next.
Some people still found a way to hate this
Yeah, no reason to see opinions at this point. Just ignore those whiners.
Omg this episode was PERFECT!
You guys did good on the pilot. I'm a huge L.O.U. fan! Can't wait for ep. 2
Brilliant first episode, I'm really excited to see where this show goes. Allot stood out, but one small, but powerful detail was the death of Sarah. We have all seen probably thousands of on screen deaths by gunshot over the years, but that one in particular stood out as incredibly real and raw, powerful scene.
I can't afford a playstation 😭 heard so much about the game... Never played it... So the story is new for me and I loved it 😍😍😍
