    I agree 1000% people watch "wheeler dealers" and then get a scrap car and either try to do it themselves realise its hard work and not like on TV and it ends up in the scrap yard and the welder for sale on ebay - fabrication work takes skill and TIME to get it right that you cant put a price or time limit on - especially when you are a perfectionist - and people ALWAYS want a price written in blood and not a penny over !! I use to use the old mantra - "if you have to ask a price you cant afford it " !! _ only ever had ONE job where the bloke appreciated my talent and never asked a price as long as it was "right" he did not care - but guys that rich don't come along very often - just remember main dealers charge £80 - £100 per HOUR just to plug your car into the computer and bolt on new parts - so you need MORE for your talent - NEVER under estimate or under price skill and INTEGRITY !! thanks for all your video's they are a pleasure to watch

    I'm right there with you mate, I've got a 19x11 garage and a 12 x 10 shed in the backyard with another open but covered 12 x 12 work area, I usually do my painting outdoors (California). I'm max'd out for space, and people are always asking me if I want to renew their motorbikes. With labor and parts it wouldn't be worth it for them, I just tell them to do the best they can on their own bikes, watch the Trev's Blog, etc.

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes spot on. I’ve actually absorbed the cost myself to make it affordable for people to get what they want. It’s a slippery slope because the moment you start doing this kind of thing the flood gates open and every man and his uncle want a favour. My wake up call was investing hundreds of hours of my own time into friends projects just to watch them very quickly sell the finished car/bike on for huge profits. Talk about being taken for a MUG 🤦🏻‍♂️. Cheers Trev 👍

    You hit the nail on the head with the motor trade in general…. I was a Master Tech, I decided after way too long cars and bikes need to be a hobby not a job. Too much hassle, too much expenditure on tools and equipment and customers on the whole are painful. I used to do ‘foreigners’ after work,the customers would ask ‘how much’, my price was always set about 20-50% cheaper than at the dealership I worked for, they would nearly always stuck their teeth and question the price, my reply was always that’s the price or bring it to work and I will do it for more 🤷 Also most customers think you are trying to rob them, cut corners and do shoddy workmanship because that’s what the media has them believing…. I now just work on my own cars and for a few select friends and earn my living outside of the motor trade earning many times more what I did in it…. Which means I can afford better cars and bikes as toys now… A win around.

      Yep all to familiar story. The thing I could never understand was that there became a bullying culture when the insurance companies decided to cripple the accident repair trade. Rather than stand up to the insurance companies the managers of these bodyshops turned into real nasty pieces of work. A couple of decades on and they’re now completely screwed for staff. I know it’s sad but I can’t help having a smile when I hear of garages begging for staff. Good on you anyway it sounds like you’ve got the best of both worlds. Cheers Trev 👍

      Same, I moved on. For a hobby it's fun, as a job it sux. Real job aside, I enjoy fixing abandoned cars to road condition, making play money, keeping the hobby fun. When friends and acquaintances ask me to work their cars, I always have "2 cars to complete first" and the highest hourly rate around, they realise fun happens in my shed, not fast and cheap.

    BTW, my youngest sons VAG main dealership charges £200 an hour labour for cars less than 3 years old. He's in the top three nationally for his productivity consistently. His bonus is as big as his wage most months. So there is still money to be made in the industry with hard work.

      Thank Tony much appreciated, the filter works as well as the last one. The key is to drop the filter door down and blast it off with the air line both sides with the extraction running just before painting something. This removes any loose dust. I painted the roof of my van and it came out so clean I didn’t need to polish it. Cheers Trev 👍

    Thing is Trev the general public have absolutely no idea whats involved in restoration work, im a vehicle tech and this side of the trade is exactly the same, it really is a no win situation that causes you a lot of stress its like “why have you charged me 6 hours just to repair a broken wire” … well its took me longer than that to actually find the fault … you cant win, all the best with ur new venture 👍

      Steve I’ve never met a customer that said, just do me a good job and charge me what it’s worth. I’m totally finished taking on work for customers or working for garages repairing cars, either one is a total waste of my life. I’ve just seen a staff wanted poster in Burger Star they’re paying £1.50 PH more than I was being paid at a main dealership fitting new chassis legs on a body jig and getting crap off the boss all day long. On a really busy day I can sell over £1000 of coffee… in six hours! I then get people trying to explain to me that I’m wasted pouring coffee and they insist that I really should be working on cars…

I keep giving them a good looking at every time I walk by them. I really must pull my finger out and at least restore my dads Morris Minor. As for the video editing I got 2 minutes if that done per evening if I was lucky and then you've got music voice overs and effects if you want them used to love doing all that. Trev! What do you mean it’s a flat no! I NEED someone to work on my cars paint 🎨!! But REALLY, I’ve missed your videos. The customer interaction you described rang true with a negotiation I am pursuing as a customer. Sometimes, we just have to man up and say “Thanks for your bid but this is an opportunity for me to learn a new skill (and buy a new planishing hammer!) to boot! Thanks Trev. Look forward to seeing you more.

    Good to see you back and glad to hear things are going well. Life is short so enjoy it and don't worry about those wanting you to do cars for them. Yeah 40 is super hot for you guys. It's been 40+ (115*F for the highs)daily here for 2 months and it doesn't cool off at night. I gave up on any progress or work in the shop till the end of September when it starts cooling off. Trying to run a business restoring cars isn't hard, Running a profitable and enjoyable one is. Few understand the amount of time and materials needed to restore a car.

    Hi Trev, so pleased to see you back. Regarding the spray booth, two points. I’m no expert, but the ventilation flow rate seems very high, enough breeze to pick up bits of dust and fling them about. You could turn down the fan a bit, I think, and double the layer of the filter fabric, reducing air flow and improving filtration in the process…. Just a thought. Also you need to stress to your viewers that fire is a major threat with filters: even if the fabric is fire resistant the dirt it traps may well not be, and fire plus forced ventilation equals blast furnace! Watch out guys. Watch a cooker hood go up in flames if you want to see something spectacular.
    I know what you mean about doing work for others. Just say no, and never weaken.
    Fabulous videos, mate, I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you!
    Cheers
    Will

    As much as the food may be a 'paying' concern - operating most food businesses, mean that you end up at work when everyone else is off work (I am making this comment not knowing the hours of your coffee van). That may suit some people, but when you have a family, kids like to see their parents after school, weekends, holidays etc. And 1400 hours, yes - 99.999% will say 'What - why so much?" - HA - they have NO idea of the work involved. And then doing a 'budget' priced job can come back and 'bite you on the arse' - as the customer never tells their friends that they paid for ONLY a quick splash of paint and NOT the 1400 hours it takes to typically takes to properly do a full restoration. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

      You’re right in everything you say 👍 my basic point was to say that everyone should have the choice to do what they want to do. I never tell anyone what to do with their lives. On an almost daily basis I have friends, neighbours, family and total strangers telling me what to do. I’ve personally never been happier than I am at this stage of my life and I believe this is because I’m doing exactly what I want to do. It takes time messaging and explaining to people the facts that I have outlined in this video, my hope was that people would give up hassling me… it probably won’t 😂 all the best 👍

    • @trevsblog
      @trevsblog  Před 2 lety

      Rant away Colin 👍 my old boss Steve from Race and Restoration summed it up very well once. He said you’ve built your own workshop you’ve furnished it with equipment and you’ve spent years learning how to do something. When you do something for yourself you’re claiming back an advantage you have created for yourself, by working diligently towards being in a position where you can restore your own car without the expense of having to pay a garage to do it for you. These people that keep on asking want the advantage you have, without having to make the investment you have, or the cost of having it done at a garage. I have found out to my cost that people, even people that you think are friends will happily bankrupt you and still hold their hand out for more. This is what happened to me when I had my own business. I ended up taking a loan on my house to close my business, my friend walked away with cars restored for free which he sold on for huge profits. It was my own fault for being too kind but I’ve learned from it. The lesson being that you have to have limits because takers have no limits. They’ll take your business, your home all your money, even your wife and the shirt off your back…. If YOU let them! 👍
