For me thats a yes and no, i mean, whareva the reason he had he was still a bully who bullied Eric for years ( that he dated him despite that was already quite bull for me but ok), but taking that out, and the fact that he chose to be with him, it must be frustating to be with someone that doesnt acknowlage you, when you yourself worked so hard to be where you are, but yeah, Adam stole this season, he was freaking amazing, even his father.

    • @ellabiddy4741
      @ellabiddy4741 Před 2 lety +390

Agreed. I felt bad for him and mad at Eric but at the same time I think there’s so many shows, book, movies, etc where “the only 2 gay people in the school get together and stay together because we don’t care to expand upon their romance” kinda vibe and I’d like to see them meet other people. Hopefully they don’t just recycle Raheem to be ‘the other gay’ and have Adam date him.

    • @TheCrazyFreak
      @TheCrazyFreak Před 2 lety +160

@@ellabiddy4741 Sorry, but I never understood this argument of "why are they putting the 2 queer people together?" Who are they going to put a gay guy with? A straight one? The only other two alternatives are them not dating anyone (which becomes very hypocritical when a show has plenty of straight couples; to have _them_ have romantic subplots but not the queer characters is kind of homophobic) or the show bringing in a new queer character, which poses a different set of problems: 1. that character often just becomes "the boyfriend" and doesn't have a story of their own besides being there solely to be the other person's partner (in fact, this was kind of the problem with Rahim a lot - in s2 he was just there to be Eric's boyfriend and this season he was also only there to cause tension between Adam and Eric, and then to be Adam's friend) and/or 2. when there's already a lot of characters on a show (which is the case for Sex Ed), it adds yet _another_ person to an already big cast (and everyone's stories suffer for it due to less screentime). It's not strange at all for the only two openly gay people to fall for each other and get together at some point.
Besides, I don't even think Sex Ed is too guilty of this anyway. At the start of the series the only two gay guys that we knew of were Eric and Anwar, but the show _never_ has them get together. They brought Rahim onto the show for the sole purpose of being Eric's boyfriend in s2. Yes, Eric was also with Adam (the other major queer guy on the show) but why are straight main characters allowed to get together and not gay ones because then it's somehow "problematic and cliche?"
If they do it organically and they do it well, I wouldn't mind Adam and Rahim getting together at some point next season. I like the semi-friendship they've formed and if they continue building on it and it develops into something more then that's fine. The other alternative is keeping them single or getting Adam together with a girl (everyone seems to forget this, but he's actually bisexual). But frankly, I don't want to see the queer characters be single while having so many straight couples be together. What kind of a message does that send?

I don't really think the writers overcame that very well. 'I was just trying to protect you.' Yeh sure, by neutralising a romantic rival you can't compete with - as if anyone would buy that . . . On top of that, putting Ruby and Otis together in the meantime backfired massively because they were too likable as a couple, and so getting her out of the way and getting Otis back with Maeve felt kinda forced.

I disagree about Maeve. One of my favorite things about the show is how realistic it is. Coming from a child of an addict, it is a cyclical issue. They come back, try to be better, eventually fall back into old habits and leave again. To love someone experiencing addiction is to learn the same lesson over and over. Her trust issues come from not havi g stable parents. It makes sense that she would continue to relapse back into those insecurities. However I did think the scene with Isaac was bullshit. It makes no sense that she would be mad at Otis and not Isaac. I also didn't like how she was in the background this season. There was a lot to explore with the foster situation and her mom relapsing.

100% this! Not only does he get no consequences for his shitty behaviour he gets rewarded with a (sort of) relationship with Maeve he totally doesn't deserve, which is deeply problematic and extremely unconvincing. Maeve seems more bothered by Otis drunkenly calling her out for being selfish than she is by Isaac being creepy, possessive and massively invasive, betraying her privacy and interfering to stop a crucial romantic opportunity from occurring with the boy she's in love with. And we're supposed to believe she just gets over it and that neither she nor Otis would go and talk to each other all summer? That she wouldn't see she had a missed call from him on her phone? That she would not only forgive Isaac but decide to shag him and get romantically involved with him? And then he has the audacity to act all hurt when the kiss finally happens between her and Otis, which should have happened several months earlier and would have done had he not deliberately gotten in the way? Fuck off. They made Isaac way too unlikeable imho, the guy has no redeeming personality traits, he's just consistently a giant asshole throughout the entire series and a hugely problematic character and it gets totally glossed over.

About Maeve's repetitive storyline: I actually think that's quite realistic. People who have internalised a certain self-image and defense mechanism don't usually find it easy to let go of it. It's normal to fall back to it. Especially with trust issues it's so easy to feel let down and go back to thinking you can't trust people. I definitely understand Maeve not trusting Otis - even if it's true that for big issues he's going to be there, he has been unreliable in other ways.
It's clear though that Maeve trusts Aimee.
When Maeve says "I don't trust anyone", she has just been let down by someone she really trusted, and even loved, so that ingrained distrust flares up. I can totally buy that in that moment she may believe that, even if that's not true (just an inaccurate self-image). Or she could say it just to make a point, or because the "abandoned kid" side of her comes up more with Isaac, since that's something they share.
Growth is not always linear, people's self-images are often inaccurate, and their personalities are not fully consistent every minute of every day. I guess whether it makes for compelling television is another question. For me, personally, it is.
About Eric: even though I find him a really fun and charismatic character, I've always thought he wasn't a particularly good friend. Whenever Otis tells him about something that has happened to him that he feels insecure about, Eric's reaction is to laugh at him, not to support him or make him feel good about having shared with him. He also cannot keep a secret and always screams sensitive information at the top of his lungs. Honestly, I wouldn't tell him anything I didn't want the rest of the world to know.
Totally agree about Adam becoming a great character, about the fact that they ended Otis and Ruby's relationship way too abruptly, and about being let down by Eric's cheating and general behaviour.

It's almost as if "being true to himself" held more importance to him than being a good friend. Ever since season one I so many times found myself thinking "why is he laughing at something that's clearly making Otis uncomfortable, like, actually bad/self-conscious" or "why is he (LITERALLY) screaming the thing Otis just told him, if he's clearly wanting it to stay between them."

For me, the relationship between her actions at Moordale and her IVF treatment wasn't only about a coping mechanism, as you pointed out, but a narrative symbol of what she was doing at the school: willing bodies into submission. You can't treat sex and reproduction the same way you treat your career. Her refusal to give up on IVF against doctor's recommendations is her trying to bully her own body - something with its own 'consciousness', for lack of a better word - into doing what she wants it to, the same way she bullies Cal and the other non-binary student to conform, for example.

It just seemed so un-Eric-like to criticise Adam for not being fully out of the closet - did he not see where Adam was originally coming from ?! When they were together, I was sincerely surprised at how gay Adam allowed himself to be. I get both sides. Eric doesn't HAVE to be held back because he's at a different stage in his sexuality discovery. He's blossoming while Adam is just starting to sprout. However, having that discovery come from a cheating plot sort of cheapens it to me. Eric could have done it like hey Adam, we're at different places and right now I need to be a free flying gay man out and proud, and I know you're not there yet so let's break up amicably.
Eric deserved more than his arc being infidelity.
While I wish he understood Adam better, I also know it's not his responsibility to hold himself back until Adam is more comfortable. Either way I hope they both grow from it.
I'm sort of liking this starting with Adam and Rahim. Rahim isn't as flamboyant as Eric is and I think he might be at a good, comfortable level for someone like Adam whose still exploring himself, while not feeling like Adam would be holding him back the way Eric is.

Not enough people are talking about how Jackson was robbed this season. He was one of my favourite characters in season 2, he hurts himself because of his anxiety, he confronts his mother, he branches out and finds something new. This year he’s reduced to nothing, he’s paired with Cal who is already not a character, and all he does is smoke. Should’ve kept with his acting

    • @Forca_Barca

I know right? Even though Jackson was that kind of guy every average dude would hate cuz of his success, his sex life and his looks he never seemed to be as annoying as a typical jock.
I mean my inner childish boy was of course rooting for Otis and Maeve but seeing how much effort Jackson put in during his relationship and how he had to deal with the stress that comes with being "THAT" guy made him so likeable.
And in season 3 he was an aftertought just there to entertain a non binary storyline that wasn't even fleshed out and just seemed like it was thrown in there to complete a sexuality checklist which made me unfortunately hate Cal for dragging Jackson down with them just to smoke shit while Jackson was trying his best to become an actual actor in season 2.

I wouldn't go as far as to say he was suicidal (although it definetly had the potential to get to that point). He used self harm as a way to escape the constant pressure he was under from his parents, swimming, school ...etc and by the end of the 2nd season we see him trying to discover himself and what he enjoys doing. I do agree though that they kind of forgot about that entire arc and Jackson was just linked to Cal for the entire season and didn't contribute to the season in any other way. Like he mentions going to therapy at the end of season 2, they could have done alot by diving into those therapy sessions and properly addressing his self harm as well as dealing with his anxiety and finding his purpose.

They both even said their things in different episodes! Otis said he make things worse(and then he said it to his mom, and Maeve said that to him before he said it himself, but that aside) and Eric said that he didn't even know what happened in Nigeria, it just kinda happens(then, in the last episode, the writers give him his reason, without any internal struggles or questioning himself. The one time he brought it up is when he tells Otis about what happened. As if, he is steering the narrative. That, my friend, is a sign of sociopathic behaviour).

Every. Single. Time. Maeve trusts someone, she is let down. Her mum, her brother, Otis, Hope, Isaac... Her tenacity is amazing, but she doesn't get a break. She has to become totally vulnerable and trust someone every time she is betrayed - look at how hard it was for her to believe that Anna wants to help her in Season 3. It really stuck out to me when I realized that Jackson and Cal were really the only characters who were pushing back against Hope, and Otis, Eric and others only joined in at the end--and Maeve wasn't even there for that scene! As far as their relationship seeming a bit toxic, what I got from FSN's video was that Otis understood her defense mechanisms and underneath her superiority complex was just a misunderstood person. He even challenged her beliefs by refusing to dress the way she wanted later in their relationship. He was good for her. But nonetheless, she should've gotten some kind of self-discovery arc w/o a boy involved and the writers totally missed that opportunity and tossed her aside. So yeah, TEAM RUBY.

What I hated in Season 3 was how it ended up with Maeve continuously apologizing to Isaac after she admitted what happened in France with Otis and that didn't sit well with me, considering he completely betrayed her trust. He got off lightly and yet still guilt trips Maeve and then 'takes his heart off the table', like seriously, what a self-righteous prick. It's understandable that given his circumstances he'd resort to underhand tactics to try and secure a love interest and maybe Maeve understands that so is more forgiving, but in the long term I think he'd prove to be manipulative, intentionally or otherwise and so is not a good match for Maeve.
With Otis and Ruby, I understand people rooting for them, and that is in no small part due the the extremely slow burn of Otis / Maeve, but again, they are not right for each other. They were, for a short time, but their relationship merely served a purpose for each of them, a means to an end. For Ruby, it was to be more accepting of herself and others, to stop caring what people thought and to be herself. For Otis it was a chance to explore the sexual side of relationships and grow his confidence in that department, also he learned not to be shaped by other people and what they think is better for you in terms of image, clothes, the way you walk. Just be yourself is the overriding message that came from that relationship and they both needed it so much in order to grow as individuals. However it was not about love, I feel that Ruby didn't love Otis, she just experienced a partner that forced her to see the error in her ways and accept herself for who she really is, who is actually a really sweet and caring person, and no-one has ever been able to do that with her, so I think she misinterpreted that and put Otis on a pedestal. That relationship was hard on Otis and him not loving her was probably a time thing, in that it was too soon, and once Ruby does some more growing emotionally she'll see that too. I don't see them being back together in Season 4, instead being very good friends with Otis helping Ruby with her personal growth as she still has a fair way to go.
Maeve being in America is a tricky one, but there will be a major plot point there, given the inclusion of a new character as her mentor, and Emma has said she will be in every episode so it will be interesting to see how much of Maeve's season will be in America and whether she actually returns to the UK or not, given the show continuously pushes the narrative that she is a gifted writer. Maybe Otis will visit her and they spend some magical moments together before Otis, in his usual, unselfish way sees that her dreams ultimately lie away from him and he lets her go, but if this was going to happen it would be pointless having Isaac returning. So I'm going to assume that Maeve returns to the UK, although not on a permanent basis. It's a shame but we have to remember that these are 17/18 year old 'kids' and relationships are fleeting at that age and emotions are often blown out of proportion which is an underlying message in the whole show.
Ultimately, I am in the Otis / Maeve corner and I'd love to see them embark on a meaningful relationship together but that's me being my romantic self, always favoring the underdog. Real life often doesn't dish out fairytales and I think it's irresponsible to portray otherwise, but I'd forgive it in this case, because I'm so invested in them as a couple, irrationally so, which is all thanks to Emma and Asa's acting abilities which have been a joy to watch. I just wish the writers hadn't tried to cram in so many other characters that ultimately diluted what started out so well in Season 1.
Personally I hope Season 4 is the last because despite there being so many other characters that I like. I think the show is in danger of becoming stale if they push any more seasons. For me it was the absolute masterclass from the beautiful Emma Mackey that kept me watching. Her ability to convey to the audience the emotions of every situation without even saying a word is pure class and an unbelievable achievement given it was her first 'gig' and she's never attended acting school. Once she leaves the show will lose a big part of itself and I'd rather not have to experience that in a potential Season 5. I wish her every success in the future and will always be a fan based on her performance in Sex Education, it will stay with me for a very long time to come.
Sorry for the wall of text, I don't do TLDR;'s. Thanks for reading if you got this far

      I'm definitely reading ALLAT 💯
I couldn't agree more with you. The feelings S1 and S2 gave me were something I never expected that a teen drama would get out of me and of course with Otis us guys finally got a relatable male main character which I think is pretty rare in this genre.
Seeing him struggle with his love life I think everyone could relate to him in some shape or form especially when we started to root for him and Maeve.
The only real downside to Sex Ed is as you said are those characters who were added just to "exist" or "represent". I understand "Sex Education" is a big term that can be interpreted very differently but we got so many great characters in Season 1 already that I feel like every new introduction in season 3 wasn't really necessary since people like Jackson, Eric, Adam, Ruby, ... all had issues that were interesting enough on their own already that I wish got more screen time instead of certain other topics and just weren't really fleshed out and just seemed like an afterthought.
I'm currently watching Season 4 and it may just be my inner childish boy hoping for a happy end between the relatable loser and the kind of girl you could only dream about but I seriously pray that Maeve and Otis finally get the ending they deserve after being put through so much.

I didn’t feel much chemistry between Otis and Maeve this season, so all their moments together seemed slightly forced and underwhelming. I think Otis and Ruby were much more genuine, I had fun watching their interactions and found myself really rooting for them as a couple. I just don’t understand what the writers are trying to do with Otis’ love interests. Why make Otis and Ruby’s pair so likable and fun with real chemistry then to replace her with Maeve, despite Ruby’s character development and newfound openness. Why reconcile Otis and Maeve in such a strange way only to have her leave again. Maeve and Isaac were so great together as well! I don’t know, I’m just really curious to see how things play out next season.

What kind of annoyed me about Cal was less about the fact that they came across as a bit of a prick, and more about the fact that they seemed to be more of an educational device for nb people. Like so much of their dialogue was just explaining what being nb means. Maybe that was intentional, as in being nb means you're constantly having to explain who you are to people, but... it just felt really preachy to me.

if i'm allowed to be a bit nit-picky about it, one thing that really let me down about this show is how they gave up on developing a full story line around asexuality after they gave it a great set up in the previous season. this was the first show that i found that treated my sexuality with care and respect so i was really excited to see how that would go only to see it was actually going nowhere. and it would have fit into the show so well too - it's literally called sex education and all kinds of sexualities are explored and given the depth they deserve, and in a show where sex is such a central point i feel like an actual asexual character could have brought an interesting and refreshing perspective to the plot. but with the way they handled it now even the one scene in season 2 falls flat, because it just seems like another speech for woke points that any other shows may have

I honestly think they misused Hope as a character - I thought they made her, especially at the end, into a cartoon evil villain (like locking Cal in a cupboard). I think it would have been interesting to explore her motivations more and make her a more morally grey character, where she had the right intentions but had to learn to understand that her execution was poor. I also really disliked Cal as a character, they just had no real character development and I didn’t find them to be a sympathetic character at all. Like Cal was just non-binary that was their storyline and the last episode was good with the fact that Jackson couldnt have a queer relationship, but even then if they jjst got rid of Cal's character, it would be less cluttered and we'd get more of Viv and Jackson's relationship.

Maeve, Otis and Eric with the clinic were the entire plot in the first season. Maeve has always been a rebel and never let adults or authority figures push her around simply because they were authority figures unless they had gained her respect. Ok counterpoint to the Maeve repetitive storyline: I feel like it's more realistic for people to not have a straightforward arc like oh hey I'm fixed now. Most people need to re-learn the same lesson many times in different circumstances for there to be lasting change... In the scene with Isaac she's still feeling hurt by Otis so she defaults to her previous thinking that she can't trust people generally. And at the same time, her forgiving Isaac for clearing the voicemail is a sign she has evolved.
