I love the weird and uncanny animation styles they incorporate into this show. It’s like what Flapjack and Courage the Cowardly Dog did, but now it’s coming back to make us uncomfortable in adulthood instead of childhood.

He doesn't seem ready to be a fully qualified Smiling Friend just yet. At least thats my working theory. Pim is overqualified, Charlie may be lazy but he has a heart of gold, Glep has that bad boy edge, and Alan misses social cues or just gets aggressive over the small stuff.

The facial expressions, the vocal cadence, the way he holds holds the camera, how he briefly breaks character to genuinely react to people’s strange requests and inside jokes, for a 90’s graphic quality VG character, this felt disturbingly real.

For anyone wondering why the mixed media works so well here. If you have 3d animation experience you can tell this was animated in 3d software using the 2d characters on layers above or below Gwimblis.
It's impresive af how they got his shadow to render so properly on backrground layers. It looks trippy once you start looking at how well planned the layers were for a 3d model to interact with a 2d space.
This is what you get when you have animators who grew up learning every short cut and motion tween in flash so they know how to make what they want with essentially 0 budget so when they actually have the resources they can better realize what they’re trying to do
@@PhantoRoyce That is why we need to give indie animators more resources and make shows. Style aside you pointed out why Zach and Mucheal are perfect show runners. These guys can cut time in half while still working as writers, animators, and voice acting in one day.

ALAN'S EYELID MOVEMENTS AND WEIRD VOCAL INFLECTIONS ARE BACK!!!! That was my biggest gripe with Season 1 - Alan didn't have the same quirks that made him likeable in "Desmond's Big Day Out", leaving him as a monotone side character. Based on this clip, I think things are looking up for him!

The very vague distortion on the outer range of his voice really ties the PS1 vibe together.
I was about 10 years old when the Gwimbly Movie first came out in cinemas in 1996. They had Tom Hanks voicing him, and promoted it nonstop on Cartoon Network. It ended up grossing over 800 million at the box office, making the studio green light a sequel, which unfortunately was a flop, making the 3rd installment go direct to video.
For those curious who design and animated the character. It was Hoolope, an animator, and a CZcams channel if you want to check it out
