Eurovision 1968 Voting Part 2/2

  • The second part of the voting for the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest, presented by Katie Boyle in London, UK.
And just when it looked like Cliff would easily sail to victory, keeping a small but steady lead up to the penultimate vote, out comes Germany and brings everything upside down... And while Yugoslavia could still save the day, they instead put the last nail in the coffin for the UK - quite like they'd do exactly 20 years later - giving Spain their first of two victories at the contest. And I must say, I admire Katie Boyle at this point for keeping up appearances in such a professional manner, especially given the audience's quite evident (and perfectly understandable) frustration.

It's even more impressive when you learn that Katie was trying her hardest to remain impartial, because she obviously wanted Cliff to win as well. I love how, when Germany gives their last vote, how the crowd literally SCREAMS.

Viva Massiel. Nunca olvidaremos aquella noche del 6 de Abril de 1968. Ni con repetición de la votación ni con la insinuación de que podía cambiar la votación, pudieron evitar el triunfo de España.

What a thriller! Looked like UK had won 2 years running after getting 2 votes from Germany until Spain got 6 the next second going 1 ahead, the audience reaction says it all. Cliff Richard was so so close and apparently he locked himself in the toilet during the voting! Throughout the history of Eurovision there was never an artist so big at the time of their participation than Cliff in 1968, weird how the Top 2 countries gave no votes to each other. Plus for the first time in 7 years no country went home empty handed, was looking all worrying for Switzerland...

It's a bit of a morbid question, but I found it interesting that there are data on the death and causes of death of Đel Jusić, Marko Brešković and Oliver Dragojević, but not Hamo, who was a singer and guitarist of the Dubrovacki Trubaduri for the first few years since the formation of the band, according to consulted sources, he died in 2003, but it is not specified from what, so I would be grateful if someone could share the information, if there is any. According to a Spanish TV presenter Jose Maria Inigo Massaiel won this by "bought votes".
Spanish TV executives travelled Europe promising to buy second-rate programmes and concerts in return for Eurovision votes, Inigo told the documentary. Victory was seen as vital to General Franco’s fascist regime in boosting Spain’s image abroad. The original singer was not allowed to perform in Catalan.
What a scandal! The last time Spain won was with 3 other winners in 1969.
