  • Adam Twerski speaks on the topic of finding your life's purpose.
    - Transcript -
I think it's important for a person in order to have a feeling of self-worth and a feeling of self-esteem to have a purpose in life. Living a purposeless life - so - what kind of significance is that?
And you tell the story of two vagrants that were arrested for loitering: the judge asks "what were you doing when you were arrested?" He says "nothing." And he asks the other one "what were you doing when you were arrested?" He says "helping him."
If you are helping somebody that's doing nothing you're doing nothing.
We have this kind of domino thing where everyone is helping everybody else but nobody has an idea of what it's for. So I think we have a sense of purpose, and this may be where religion comes in, that religion says "well the world wasn't a big accident - it was created with a purpose," and if you don't like that purpose, investigate! Look for a purpose!
My example is this: what kind of things have value to us? I tell people to go home and look at the things you own. There are some things that are aesthetic, ornamental. They have no function, but they are ornamental. And there are some things that have a function, and their value is in their function.
Well what is my function? Is my function coming home from work, kicking off the shoes, putting on the slippers, and sitting in front of the TV with a 6-can of beer? That’s not a function that can make anyone proud of one’s self.
So I think that, in order to get a good sense of self-worth (and by the way to give it to our children also) we have purpose. What is purpose in life?
You look for a purpose. There was a great Rabbi that once said “the looking is the finding.” Search. It’s not a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. As you search, you develop your traits, you develop your skills, you develop your philosophy, when you begin to search. Too many people don’t search. Everything are taken for granted = this is the way the world is.
So I think that we need to search for purpose. Many people will find a humanistic purpose: my purpose is trying to make life better for others; my purpose in life is trying to do something about the environment, to avoid acid rain; my purpose in life is to do something about famine in Ethiopia.
You can find a purpose, but you must look for a purpose.
Too often, people just go along, traveling along from day to day without giving any thought into purpose.

You will never find your purpose, because NO one knows exactly how the world works, 98% of the world is still unknown...so If somebody said he found his purpose, it just means that he stopped for searching the answer. The only thing we could do is to do something that seems meaningful while keep searching, and in the meantime, enjoy your journey in life.

I achieve happiness with 3 things: Home, Love, Goal. I have a home, I have love and my goals are to raise my son, stay healthy and improve my career. There is no need for a purpose in life.

    • @valeriiapopova930
      @valeriiapopova930 Před 4 lety

      I will tell you dear.
Life itself is a dynamic process.
Whenever you achieve something and get your result it would mean nothing to you if you stop your progression. Finding a purpose equals looking for purpose, it means that along this search you learn a lot, experience many things Ex.: by trying to find relevant information, meet people, explore interesting subjects you increase your awareness of what actually could be “that thing” you want to stick to and make it your life mission.
      Hope the answer was helpful.

@@valeriiapopova930 good answer but i think the notion of a PURPOSE is a bit overrated. Like it can maybe sometimes put you inside a box where you keep telling yourself to not to get distracted because This or that is my purpose and I'm not supposed to do anything else besides that THING . Then one day you realise it's not fun anymore so you look for another PURPOSE . It's like trying to find something that we may put out time and work into, which could yield happiness or good results perhaps . That purpose is not permanent obviously , it will change when you stop feeling the kick anymore for that THING .
So instead a better approach to life would be to trying to do something that would benefit the doer's interest and at the same time help him/her to have some fun. It's like the ancient Chinese philosophy that life is inherently purposeless.
This notion of purposelessness gives a kind of independence of thought and action and i think is better than having a purpose .
You could just do your thing without any desire of materialistic things or even recognition . The result is that people with such notion and work ethic get everything ( happiness , recognition, money ) you name it.
So this is kind of a paradox that if you live a purposeless life, you would be successful.

Stop trying so hard. Live your life and just sit down after every day for a few minutes and think: "Okay, do I like what I am doing now? Should I change something?"
The first thing is to actually self reflect on your life. You wont find THE PURPOSE, because your purpose will change over time.
Just reflect every day, if you are doing something that you can still be proud of after waking up the next day.
