Four Recent Volcanic Eruptions Confirmed on the Tristan de Cunha Volcano!

- One of the most interesting volcanoes is located on the United Kingdom overseas territory of Tristan de Cunha. Its most recent eruption from 1961 to 1962 led to the temporary evacuation of the island and formed an impressive lava dome. However, more recently a new paper has shed light on the fact that this volcano is more active than initially suspected. In total, 4 new recent eruptions were confirmed in the last several thousand years. This video will discuss this volcano, the latest scientific development, and discuss the new hazard rating for this volcano.

This reminds me of Santorini. Find a patch of dirt on any given volcanic crag, and a Greek will build a village on it. With vineyards.
And lots of goats and olive trees.
Worth the risk.

The only real difference is that santorini is capable of producing much larger eruptions every few thousand years, the Minoan eruption was comparable to the 1815 eruption of Tambora after all

I want to note that these new eruption dates represent the youngest layers of peat which overlie the lava flows. Therefor, the true eruption dates may be a bit older
Im interested in the dispersal of hotspots. Do you have a link to a map of them? It would be interesting to see if there is any sort of pattern to them, it might tell us something about what is going on deeper down.

Tristan de Cunha is a really interesting place, though I suspect you have to be born there to put up with the isolation. Almost the whole population are related, which has created medical problems after recessive genes became dominant in some cases.

@@GeologyHub Not many digital, I can hook you up with getting down there though. ITs an amazing place I had a 3 wheel honda Big red and various Motorcycles so I used to explore as well as rock climb, hike and dive I know the place intimately. I worked with Geothermal guys from Univ of Idaho when they did a drilling project up at cricket valley and another test well they put in (I did that on the side they where going to try to get geothermal generator on line, and one day they just capped the well and left). I worked as both a tech and a diver there, I took some Graves registration folks around to look for abandon graves from WWII, Scientist from various projects even the famous BBC Sir David Attenborough who broke his arm stumbling around in the broken rocks. Also some shrimp that they never found anywhere else.
Ascension Island a cool place??? It is one of the hottest hell holes on the planet. Try living in Two Boats for three months and come back and tell me how cool it is there.

Thanks for this video, when I was a small child and fascinated by volcanoes this eruption was still recent news. The whole population was evactuated back to the UK during the eruption, afterwards they were given the option to stay in Britain or return to their island, they all went home. I wonder if this was a comment on the British weather? 😉☔🌫🌧🌬
Robert Heinlein visited there in 1953 or so. He said it was difficult to talk to them about anything other than the sheep or potato crop. They only knew what was around them.

Fun fact: Tristán da Cunha is a Portuguese name. In portuguese "nh" is the same as the spanish "ñ". So, for English speakers Cunha is pronounced like "koo

When I visited the big Island of Hawaii when I was a kid one of the most striking features that I saw were the volcanic vents that seemed like holes that went down to the center of the earth. Though they are not, the nonchalantness that they were treated with (oh by the way there are unmarked human sized holes that dot the trail around the volcano, just don't fall into one) the idea of falling into one was such a frightening prospect that it seered the memory into my consciousness. Those might make a good video along with the volcanic glass hairs that are all over some of the lava fields there.
Holy shit! I've always thought of Hawaii as a welcoming, cheerful landscape. Vents to eat you and volcanic asbestos? You've seared it into MY memory, too. May as well take my chances at Yellowstone.

Im a new subscriber to your channel and I love it, as I have a huge interest in geology, especially volcanoes myself. Another remote volcano that is eruption or at least was a couple of months ago was Big Ben on Heard Island. Also, mount Michael near the South sandwich Islands has a persistent lava lake but we knew nothing about it since maybe 2 years ago. We dont know much about these remote active volcanoes still in 2021. Maybe we should check around these guys for the 1808 eruption? Probably only an underwater caldera remains though.

Yeah, that is a very interesting topic! For example, the Tristán de Acuña hotspot borns from a really huge large igneous province like Paraná and Etendeka Traps wich split up South América from África

A Topic For Consideration: The geologic process that created The Geysers formation in Northern California. What kind of a hot spot is involved? I'm on the Mendocino coast and there are a number of hots springs about 20 miles inland. Seems like a large formation and quite active at that. Thanks for the excellent content.
The Geysers are not a hot spot story. It's another consequence of the subduction of the Juan de Fuca plate.

I think it's part of the Clear Lake volcanic complex
Some theories suggest a major magma chamber is building under that area and a caldra forming eruption will eventually happen

I'm finding that there are many more hotspots driving volcanism than I ever knew about and I wonder whether that is because of new research or just because of "I'm not a geologist" ignorance on my part. Ten years ago for instance I would have only thought of the Hawaiian islands and Yellowstone.
More information is being released and discoveries are always upgraded
Probably just ignorance on your part, but nothing to feel bad about. it’s not like it’s information that’s relevant to anyone but geologists and the people living on these islands.

Is it just me or are there more large eruptions happening now compared to recent years. We've had major eruptions from Iceland, La Palma, Italy, Hawaii and now this one.
It's more that these eruptions are actually watchable live than their frequency changing. Earth has pretty constantly been having volcanic eruptions for billions of years and will continue to do so for a very, very long time.
Please cover the Nyiragongo Volcano that is currently active in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

A reminder; approx 10 years ago I predicted more volcanic/earthquake activity. I based this on CC/GW. What does a warm blanket (metaphorically) do to the Earths attempt to cool it's core?

The atmosphere getting 3 degrees Celsius hotter would have literally no effect on underground magma.
The atmosphere might as well be a vacuum compared to the lithosphere, thermodynamically speaking, how could it influence that?
If relative heat transfer had any influence on volcanism, how could undersea volcanos exist?
Approximately 10 years ago instant and detailed information about all the volcanism going on was much more limited. Already we're seeing livestreams beginning to crop up now for more and more eruptions.
That being said, global warming might have a sliiight effect on volcanism due to the effect on ice sheets - melting ice sheets can cause a little bit of decompression melting and thus trigger more volcanism in that region than there typically would be - so keep an eye out on central Iceland and particularly west Antarctica!
For a hotspot volcano that is in the middle of the ocean, this volcano is very explosive. Especially since it’s near a the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Where is all of that silica coming from?

There always are, but we don't know how many. About 75% of all lava erupted is from the ocean ridges.

Could the plate tectonics between South America and Africa been initiated by a asteroid collisions and could the unusual composition of the magma at Tristan de Cunha be due to the accretion of said asteroids?
Not in this case, asteroid collisions rarelly affects the tectonic processes

When that large flank slid into the sea there must of been a tsunami... That's the current concern of some scientists about La Palma island which has a volcano which is also erupting. If a large piece of La Palma's western flank were to slide into the sea, the resulting tsunami would devastate the Caribbean and the east coast of the USA. Some believe the UK would also be impacted.
nobody - especially not scientists - is concerned about a flank collapse at la palma except deranged alarmists on social media
